FC Metalist Kharkiv
The capacity of the existing stadium is being increased from 30,000 to 41,111. Plus the roof is being added as well as various modernizations. It has a convenient location with extreme proximity to a subway/metro station, which will get you anywhere in the city. Subway system has 3 operational lines.

Stan June 5th, 2007, 02:19 AM Good for Ukraine, it will have great stadiums all over the country. Will do wonders for Ukrainian League.
It has advantage over Russia, where the only good stadiums are getting built Moscow and St Petes.
El Vampiro Ucraniano June 5th, 2007, 01:24 PM Good for Ukraine, it will have great stadiums all over the country. Will do wonders for Ukrainian League.
It has advantage over Russia, where the only good stadiums are getting built Moscow and St Petes.
And also the owners of the stadium FC Metalist have qualified for UEFA Cup this season, they will defenetly need a large stadium and after Euro it will get filled up, as Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine.
uA_TAGA June 7th, 2007, 12:50 PM i dont like it much but nice job ;)
El Vampiro Ucraniano June 8th, 2007, 07:19 PM i dont like it much but nice job ;)
Unfortunately local goverment didn't want to spend money on the new stadium, so investors (FC Metalist Kharkiv) were brought in to reconstruct the old one, i have even heard that there is a possibility that this will be the venue for one of quarter finals.
VelesHomais June 8th, 2007, 07:33 PM My friend from Kharkiv says it's a better arena to experience the game than some of the German ones where WC2006 was hosted (he went there for the games).
El Vampiro Ucraniano June 8th, 2007, 08:24 PM To be honest it does resemble two world cup venues, Gottlieb Daimler Stadion and AWD Arena. But i like Metalist more. :)
VelesHomais June 8th, 2007, 08:39 PM Yes, the new glassy facade will be awesome.
http://i7.tinypic.com/54ccrde.jpg
And it'll be a fourth largest stadium in Ukraine, right? Or will the Lvivian be fourth?
Olympic 85~k
New Kyivan 65k+
Donetsk 50k+
Lviv / Kharkiv both at 40k+
Dnipro 34k
Odesa ??
El Vampiro Ucraniano June 8th, 2007, 09:43 PM I am not very sure, i believe Lviv still doesn't have finalised project. Hochtief is not an offcial developer tey, I have heard that it is somewhere at 30k-40k range.

i hope so :)
If you mean the venues for Euro 2012, than i agree with you to a certain extend, since Kharkiv is a reserve city and the local club agreed to pay the expences for the reconstruction of the old stadium, than no one would want to build a brand new stadium... However one thing about Euro in Poland & Ukraine is that for the tournament more than 1 400 000 tickets will be sold, which is a record for UEFA European Football Championship.
VelesHomais June 21st, 2007, 07:15 PM The stadiums are ok, but unfortunately they aren't so impressive. I hoped for for more impressive things.
Well, this reserve stadium is not so extravagant, but still quite good and original with the facade, but I don't think you can argue that Donetsk Shakhtar isn't impressive :)
Oekraїne June 21st, 2007, 10:11 PM The stadiums are ok, but unfortunately they aren't so impressive. I hoped for for more impressive things.
To a certain extant i agree with you but you got to remember that the only world class stadium is getting build in Donetsk two others in Kiev and Lviv have not started the constraction yeat some say that the one in Kiev could cost 1bl euro so that one could be something impressive.
michał_ June 22nd, 2007, 12:55 AM Plus- speaking of impressivness is completely nonsense for one more reason:
we still don't know the designs of stadiums in Warsaw (70k), Wroclaw (45k), reserve stadium in Chorzow (modernisation), final design of the stadium in Krakow (2 stands already built, but various... ugly projects emerging). Plus- recently a new rendring of the stadium in Poznan has been revealed- 5k extra seating, very nice bowl shape, except for one stand already covered...
So for now we know less than half the venues- talking at this point is... pointless :)
VelesHomais June 22nd, 2007, 01:17 AM Yes, and we know don't about the new stadiums in Kyiv and Lviv, which should be something incredible. Out of Ukrainians stadiums Kharkivs will be the only standard one, although it's a still damn good stadium :)

El Vampiro Ucraniano August 26th, 2007, 10:19 PM ^^ The next stage of renovation is replacement of roof, and running tracks.
LMCA1990 August 26th, 2007, 11:01 PM awesome for a reserve stadium. the ukrainian colors look great.
El Vampiro Ucraniano August 27th, 2007, 02:31 PM Behold, renderings of Metalist-City. Hotels, casinos, supermarkets and restaurants, all of this including the stadium is Metalist-City. By 2012 it will be ready to host Euro.

VelesHomais August 27th, 2007, 05:56 PM I wonder if FC Metalist can really finance all of this, or will it have joint funding from the city and national budgets.
And yes, it's awesome :) skyscrapers + football, what else do we need?
El Vampiro Ucraniano August 27th, 2007, 06:21 PM ^^ As far as i know the club is paying for the stadium, but Metalist-City will mostly be paid by investors and partly by local government.
VelesHomais August 27th, 2007, 06:35 PM Better watch this video. It's a whole mini-city for the tourists! Must be some kind of record in Europe (or the world) for the scale of preparations for a reserve city :)

IronMan89 March 24th, 2008, 09:28 PM I don't think this Stadium is good enough to have games in 2012... other project in Ukraine are a bit better
veronika March 24th, 2008, 10:23 PM Nice pitch! Thats what you get by using a 3 tonne roller (see earlier in this thread) its great for compacting soil like concrete and completely capping drainage.
El Vampiro Ucraniano March 25th, 2008, 03:05 PM In general i like the stadium, but the pitch is horrbile, it currently looks like ann arena for mud wrestling rather than football.

trmather October 16th, 2008, 03:38 PM It still retains a slightly Soviet-ish feel, and I love that. Still looks like an old-world stadium, but of course the renovations shall bring it up to modern standards.
Great stuff.
VelesHomais October 16th, 2008, 07:09 PM Oh my God! What is that red brick ancient-imitating facade?! Clearer shots anyone?
It's a relic from 1920's that underlines the history of this arena, after all it's a reconstruction of one of the oldest stadiums.

Why are many Poles so fixated on anything that doesn't follow prudish ideas of perfection? I noticed whenever there's something imitating a different epoch, the Polish community rises up to attack it. Not everything has to be a glassy box, some alternating architectural elements light the place up and make it distinguished.
It's a common practice in Ukraine to leave a part of the old buildings to remind of its past combined with the new addition:

mihai_alex November 15th, 2008, 02:17 PM ^^
Compared to other stadiums with track the view it's quite good, and besides, the camera distorts the reality a bit.
lpioe November 15th, 2008, 03:35 PM Was the stadium always used during the construction works?
ewild November 16th, 2008, 10:59 PM Yes it was. Except for a short period last spring, but mostly not for the reconstruction - the pitch was completely ruined for winter service mistakes. And 2 host teams were to play their matches on another Kharkiv stadium or even in another cities.
VelesHomais December 14th, 2008, 09:32 PM Outside it's starting to look a bit like Donbas-Arena, but at the same time very distinctive and unique. Must be the best Euro reserve arena ever :)

NMAISTER007 March 26th, 2009, 06:58 PM The stadium looks great, but what i don't get is why is this a reserve stadium? It looks good compared to the other stadiums that are constructed or reconstructed in Ukraine for Euro 2012.
DaveyCakes March 27th, 2009, 02:07 AM I'd guess it's geographical....They have Donetsk (east), Kiev (central), Lviv (West) and Dnipropetrovsk (south-ish).
VelesHomais March 27th, 2009, 02:58 AM It's actually no longer reserve, because Ukraine dropped the formula of 4 main and 2 reserve stadiums. Now every city has equal chances and which ever is better prepared, they will be selected.
PaulFCB March 27th, 2009, 01:22 PM And Kharkiv is Ukraine's 2nd biggest city after Kiev and the stadium has >40.000 seats and makes it the 3rd biggest while the 4th is also a reserve stadium in Odessa.
So Odessa ftw ffs pwn :D it's actually close to Romania so talk to Yusckenko so he can host the final over there if Romania plays it.
VelesHomais March 27th, 2009, 05:12 PM I will talk it over this weekend with him, when we go golfing.
It's a complete mystery to me which cities will be selected, but I'll be happy with any decision, my city will get it anyway :D
The thing is that these cities are all very different, Kharkiv sounds more logical than Lviv and Odessa, because it's larger, has well developed subway system, almost finished stadium, new airport terminal under construction etc. but Lviv and Odessa are much more tourist-friendly with big old centers and are very close to EU geographically, while Kharkiv is all the way on the other side, near Russia.
Dnipro may lose its position that will go to Kharkiv, then Lviv or Odessa will be in. But it wouldn't be fair to dnipro since they were the first one to finish Euro 2012 stadium, much earlier than everybody else.
So far I would say 100% participants are Kyiv and Donetsk.
Fresh update:
Old roof looks pathetic in comparison to the new one :)

Jim856796 March 28th, 2009, 07:46 PM I tried to find a thread for UEFA 2012 to ask this question, but I cannot find the thread, so I'll ask it here. What is the purpose of a reserve stadium in a soccer tournament?
NMAISTER007 March 28th, 2009, 07:54 PM Ok, first of all its FOOTBALL!!!! secondly, in may (i think) they will decide which stadiums will be the host for euro 2012, so there is still a chance for Kharkiv to host the euro (im not sure, this is just my opinion)
Jim856796 March 28th, 2009, 08:08 PM I asked the question because I don't know if reserve stadiums do or do not host any regular football matches in the Euro tournament.

VelesHomais March 28th, 2009, 09:12 PM I asked the question because I don't know if reserve stadiums do or do not host any regular football matches in the Euro tournament.
There are two functions for having 2 extra cities/stadiums prepare.
1. It allows more flexibility if one city is way behind, then it can be substituted for another.
2. If something unpredictable happens to another city/stadium, there's always a just as good substitute.
These are my guesses.
Both countries are preparing 2 extra cities / stadiums. I don't think they will be used in any way during the actual tournament. Although which cities will be selected will be declared only in may this year.
duval March 29th, 2009, 04:17 PM the constructions around the stadium, looks interesting :)

VelesHomais April 17th, 2009, 07:20 AM Btw, it will have 4 displays!
NMAISTER007 April 18th, 2009, 11:51 AM I hope this stadium will be one of the 4 chosen stadiums in Ukraine. These r the stadiums that i really want to host Euro: Kiev Olympic stadium (About 77k), Donbass-Arena (55k), Prokopenko Arena (41k) and also this stadium (41k). The reason why I don't want the Dnipro stadium and the Lviv stadium to qualify is because they r both small and they both have around 30k.

Its impossible for Kharkiv to be chosen because the stadium doesn't have any luxury boxes. I like the look of this stadium better than Dnipro's, only bad thing is that it has a track around it.
In a perfect world, Ukraine's 4 host cities would be Kyiv, Odessa, Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk. Its a shame Donetsk is an automatic choice, that city doesn't deserve it :ohno:

Dnipro city centre is very nice, compact, some beautiful streets and nice boulevards, etc. The new arena is located in the city close to everything. Its very nice in the summer time, small rolling hills, they will probably create a fan mile on the Dnepr River boardwalk, etc. Donetsk is just not an appealing city for Euro 2012, period. Its shocking that this city will host a Semifinal of Euro's and later possibly Europa League Final or even Champions League Final
The infrastructure of both needs work, but just looking at it from a fans perspective, I just don't see how being in Donetsk will be worthwhile other than to see your favorite team play in a beautiful stadium. Does no good for the promotion of tourism to Ukraine.
VelesHomais April 27th, 2009, 02:18 AM That's true. Donetsk is one of the least desirable cities for tourists to see.

Most people visiting for Euro 2012 will be straight footy junkies, and won't care where their team plays. I can see your point about promoting tourism, but that has to be balanced with the future use of the stadium, and in that regard at the present Donetsk is the only choice outside of Kiev for a stadium of that size.
I've never been in either Donetsk or Lviv so I can't comment on either, but I agree Odessa has to be chosen. It's just a pity there isn't a realistic option in the Crimea..THAT would promote tourism...

That's a really good point actually. In that case it just sucks that Shakhtar is any good at all, and Kyiv's main competition isn't Tavriya Simferopol, and they didn't play their home games in Yalta :)
P.S. I'm getting the feeling that Dnipro will be left out. Dnipro and Kharkiv to miss out and Kyiv, Donetsk, Odessa and Lviv host. That would suck for our city because we were building our arena when the decision to host Euro in Ukraine was made.

hugenholz May 13th, 2009, 05:36 PM That will be a huge problem for the Ukraine. 5 cities (4 in Poland 1 in Ukraine if they fail the 30 november deadline) to host the Euro 2012 tournament? This will be a problem for both countries to get this tournament organized.

Maybe that silver-grey copy was simply a demo-version.
Meanwhile the first squad of 5222 plastic warriors just arrived to serve in the stadium. And their uniform is definitely blue =)

The roof doesn't look cheap, infact some of the new stadiums that are currently being built also have a similar type of roof. I guarantee you that the roof will look awesome once it will be completed.
Ukraine July 5th, 2009, 10:36 PM ^^ im talking about the covers not the roof itself
NMAISTER007 July 5th, 2009, 10:39 PM Some popular stadium also use similar types of steel for their roofs, especially in England.

NMAISTER007 July 7th, 2009, 11:12 PM when are they planning to finish this stadium
There is no completion date, but this stadium is going to be completed this year for sure.
Inferious July 8th, 2009, 12:09 AM we should have 2 stadiums built by 2009. and the rest in 2010
NMAISTER007 July 8th, 2009, 12:17 AM yup: Dnipropetrovsk (Ready) Donetsk (almost ready) and Kharkiv (soon ready) but i think due to the pace of the constructions of our stadiums, the stadiums in Kiev, Lviv and Odessa might be completed in the early 2010, maybe February, and then we have 2 more years to work a lot on our infrastructure :)
Inferious July 8th, 2009, 12:27 AM thats where the problem is. and also hotels. But will get it done. i mean stadiums are gonna be really awasome.

The stadium sound system was also installed and tested. Now the whole stadium is getting ready for the first home match: the reconstruction is going 24/7, the work on Mondo tracks and new seats (by Elco - for viewers and Figueras – for VIPs) is also in progress. The next few steps are installation of the LED advertising line and the installation of the flying camera Spidercam (HD quality).

ewild July 26th, 2009, 08:33 AM Metallist playing
Metallist is not now playing - it just will =)
Two starting UPL match days for Metallist were held in Kiev (vs Obolon, week ago) and in Dnepropetrovsk (vs Dnipro, yesterday) respectively. The first Europa League qualifier is away match too.
The first home match have been scheduled on August the 2-nd.
By that time Metallist Arena will be prepared to host about 20k crowd.

Population about 1500k. So it's big enough. And people love Metallist. Last season there was 15k average attendance during the reconstruction (with parts of stadium closed for public). I guess now they would fill the stadium with 20-30k crowd regularly and with full house for big Ukrainian and Euro matches.

VelesHomais August 14th, 2009, 06:20 PM We need more businessman competing to buy football clubs, I don't want the government to be involved in any of it at all, we're not living under socialism - stadiums should be built ONLY with private money.
Kappa21 August 16th, 2009, 07:45 PM ^^ Its impossible for a private businessman to buy a team for 10-15-20 Million Euros and then find land in that city and build a stadium...

Kappa they are millions of these business man in the world....
haggiesm August 17th, 2009, 11:28 AM i have nothing aginst the stadium as such, but those blue beams look like scaffolding :/
jj707070 August 17th, 2009, 05:43 PM Rather good stadium http://web-statistic.org/catalog/out.php?s_id=1

Yes, that's a pretty ugly building. But it's not that important.
VelesHomais August 17th, 2009, 07:58 PM You can see the mechanisms of the buttresses here that will enable The Spider to crawl around the city, changing its location overnight.

Elvenking August 18th, 2009, 06:43 PM Colors are terrible and construction of the roof looks very obsolete.
But well... Better than before :)
mihai_alex August 19th, 2009, 07:17 PM ^^
Those are the club colors you know, and that roof is like that because the stadium isn't new,and had to be added later.
You can see the same design in stadiums like Celtic Park,Old Trafford, and many other similar cases of added roofs.
The only obsolete design is the one with poles.
rakim August 19th, 2009, 07:35 PM that roof is like that because the stadium isn't new,and had to be added later.
look at Olympiastadion in Berlin, build in 1916, and the roof added after modernisation looks fantastic.

If you want you can do everything with class and elegance.
mihai_alex August 19th, 2009, 07:38 PM You can't beat the germans:yes:
VelesHomais August 20th, 2009, 06:09 AM But it's missing flying buttresses like in the Spider Arena.
bing222 August 20th, 2009, 08:11 AM It is really amazing stadium
polac August 20th, 2009, 02:11 PM Where are trees, flowers, something green around the stadium??
Nneznajka August 20th, 2009, 02:24 PM One of the ugliest stadiums ever build ...
Aka August 20th, 2009, 02:59 PM look at Olympiastadion in Berlin, build in 1916, and the roof added after modernisation looks fantastic.
Yeah... but with blind spots.
kartezjo August 20th, 2009, 03:19 PM One of the ugliest stadiums ever build ...
It's not that bad... the only thing I hate about is that spider thing... and those colours.
White_horse August 20th, 2009, 03:39 PM the stadium itself looks like a spider :) , anyway it is not that bad, exterior of the stadium is not very imressive, but from inside it looks pretty decent :)
polac August 21st, 2009, 01:38 PM I ask one more time, where are trees, flowers, something green around the stadium??
VelesHomais August 21st, 2009, 07:45 PM I ask one more time, where are trees, flowers, something green around the stadium??
Maybe instead of asking you should check almost any of the pages in this thread? Everyone has the same access to these photographs.

salaverryo August 21st, 2009, 08:23 PM "Metalist"= lots of metal. Get it? Now stop complaining.
NMAISTER007 August 21st, 2009, 11:08 PM I ask one more time, where are trees, flowers, something green around the stadium??
I know that this has nothing to do with Kharkiv, but did you know that Kiev is the second greenest capital city in the WORLD (While Stockholm is 1st), so you should think about what you just said. They might soon plant some trees or plants later but I don't see where you could plant them, the stadium doesn't have a huge area surrounding the stadium compared to Donetsk or something.
Inferious August 22nd, 2009, 11:55 PM more news. i just read that the stadium is opening december 5 this year.
thats two stadiums fully completed this year so then they can consentrate with the rest of the stuff such as transportation
