View Full Version : Moving to Queens. Am I no longer cool?
The Urban Politician May 11th, 2007, 04:40 PM By the end of this month I'll be hanging the hat on my swanky, sexy Manhattan lifestyle.
(Ahhh, the good times--all those hours sitting on my ass watching TV)
That's right, people. I'm moving to Forest Hills, Queens! I'll be a short walk from the 71st/Continental E train stop.
But the question plagues my mind. Is it over? Has the dream ended?
Am I no longer cool because of this? PLEASE HELP!
cincobarrio May 11th, 2007, 05:51 PM doesn't matter, any of the 4 boros (not staten) is cool
EtherealMist May 11th, 2007, 05:54 PM outter boroughs? ewww
haha
I have some friends in Astoria and it they can take the N or W train and be in midtown in just a few minutes, Id move there. I know Forest Hills is quite a bit further out though, right?
UrbanSophist May 11th, 2007, 06:29 PM You were cool? ;)
Xusein May 11th, 2007, 06:32 PM You're walking distance from a station, you're still cool.
krull May 11th, 2007, 08:41 PM  You will still be cool. To me living in Queens sounds more exciting than living in some other American cities. ;) You are still in cool NYC.
EtherealMist May 11th, 2007, 09:59 PM Queens is SO cool, do you know how many rappers come from Queens?
ramvid01 May 12th, 2007, 02:08 AM If I live in Queens, then it's definitely cool :P.
But in all seriousness Forest Hills is really nice, and Queens in general is pretty cool.
edsg25 May 12th, 2007, 02:58 PM Urban, you're always cool. Always were. And always will be. But sadly not as cool as you'd be in, let's say, Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Old Town, Hyde Park, or River North (or even in some Queens-like place like West Rogers Park), but still very cool!:)
just kidding, of course...you did find the two right cities to love and you'd be cool in either.
AndySocks May 12th, 2007, 06:49 PM in fact, now you're cooler
a.s.p. May 13th, 2007, 04:17 AM didn't you just move to the UWS from chicago a year ago or something?
why the sudden move?
TalB May 14th, 2007, 06:07 AM I am sorry that this had to happen, but it could have been worse. I still think that you got a good deal in Queens, especially since it's by a major subway hub like Forest Hills-71st Ave, which gets the E, F, R, V, and sometimes the G trains. If you saw my threads about Forest Hills and Forest Hills Gardens in the Cityscapes section, you will see that it is a good neighborhood. Just be glad that you didn't move to a neighborhood in that borough where you would either have to drive or take a bus just to get the nearest subway station or where there is the LIRR. I too would like to live in Manhattan, but with the high rents and property, I will never get to on my income.
ElCrioyo May 14th, 2007, 08:13 AM Well am in the Bronx which is even worst...so i guess that you are cooler than me atleast!
dynamicdezzy May 14th, 2007, 05:33 PM You're even cooler Now! I want to move into the forest hills area myself. Its the best of both worlds (urban-suburban) Besides, you have plenty around the austin st. area to remind you of manhattan. 15 minutes into the city via LIRR and you're good!
GrigorisSokratis May 14th, 2007, 06:01 PM doesn't matter, any of the 4 boros (not staten) is cool
Explain please.

^ New York and Chicago both do it for me, that's for sure. I just LOVE the feel of these two places. Different, but there's something they have in common, other than just highrises. I'll never be able to touch on quite what it is. Ahh, whatever..

^ From Washington DC. I haven't lived in Chicago since 2002.
Everybody in DC has such a hard on for New York that I just had to come and experience it for myself

From my few trips to Forest Hills, I absolutely loved the neighborhood. Very difficult to find a decent apartment, though. Realtors always try to steer you to Kew Gardens because they just don't have anything in Forest Hills. Luckily I got off the beaten path and found something on my own, and guess what? I'll be paying more for my apartment in FH than the one I currently reside in in Manhattan.
I'm leaving the big, bad island not for economic reasons, but simply because my commute was just SO PAINFULLY long.
cincobarrio May 16th, 2007, 06:38 AM Explain please.
uuh, staten island is wack... what are you gonna do there, watch a baby bombers (SI Yankees) game??
cincobarrio May 16th, 2007, 06:40 AM i guess the verrazano bridge is pretty cool though...

Where do you work anyway?
MrMenhem May 18th, 2007, 01:23 AM Queens is all good. I grew up in Flushing. Trust me, though queens is often considered one of the suburban boroughs of NYC, it is alot more urban than the majority of cities out there.... trust me. In terms of density, while it doesnt feel as dense as manhattan, it reminds me a little of LA....
The Urban Politician May 18th, 2007, 06:34 AM Where do you work anyway?
^ Jamaica
Lili May 19th, 2007, 05:07 AM If you're so concerned about being cool, then that's not cool. So, just chill. New York is a state of mind.
UrbanSophist May 19th, 2007, 07:08 PM ^^ Yeah, 'cause New York is all about chillin' out.
TalB May 20th, 2007, 02:55 AM ^ Jamaica
Then you shouldn't have a problem since you will only need to take the E or F trains a few stops east.
AndySocks May 20th, 2007, 06:16 AM I am sorry that this had to happen
the self-proclaimed Outerborough Advocate doesn't appreciate the implications of that statement...
TalB May 20th, 2007, 09:41 PM There wasn't any offense intended in that statement.
New Jack City May 22nd, 2007, 07:35 PM Forest Hills is a nice neighborhood, you'll have more of a community feel now, not too far from me here in Astoria.
Most people I know live in the outer boroughs anyway, the only difference now is that you'll be calling Manhattan "The City."
llama May 22nd, 2007, 07:55 PM I've only lived in Manhattan... Do you feel cooler?
Scruffy88 May 23rd, 2007, 04:10 AM Well am in the Bronx which is even worst...so i guess that you are cooler than me atleast!
Hell no! I moved from Queens to the Bronx 3 years ago. Im much cooler for it
AndySocks May 23rd, 2007, 05:51 AM A good number of the most beautiful women I have ever seen were all in the Austin St. Barnes & Noble. For whatever reasons unexplainable by man, place is a chick magnet.
I nearly moved to Forest Hills, near the corner of Sybilla St. and Continental. It's south of Metropolitan Ave though, the place seemed more like Maspeth than Forest Hills.
360KidNYC May 24th, 2007, 02:24 AM Youre still cool if you live in New York City.......
krazeeboi May 24th, 2007, 11:16 AM Queens is all good. I grew up in Flushing. Trust me, though queens is often considered one of the suburban boroughs of NYC, it is alot more urban than the majority of cities out there.... trust me.
This is true. I have family in Far Rockaway, and they live in a quaint neighborhood that reminds me of a typical older in-town neighborhood in a Southern city, which can often be as urban as it gets for our cities.
For some strange reason, all of a sudden I feel drawn to New York. I always said I wouldn't mind living there for maybe a year or so, but right now I'm seriously considering it. Queens would definitely be an option for me.
