Rapid Penang is State Government Project or Central Government Project?RapidPenang is a subsidiary of Kumpulan Prasarana Negara Berhad, the same company which owns the assets of the Ampang and Kelana Jaya LRT lines, KL Monorail, RapidKL buses, and Panorama Langkawi Cable Car.

The previous Pernang Government had proposed their own Bas Negeri Pulau Pinang between 2006 / 2007 but apparently, then CM asked the Federal Government to intervene instead.

I like to see rapid penang under state management as they know local traffic better, with federal granting annual grants on infrastructure upgrades.

state government was requested to manage the transportation like bus, ferry...unfortunately the power is in the hand of federal governmentState government was originally planning to start their own bus service, Bas Negeri Pulau Pinang. Then Koh Tsu Koon was persuaded to accept the Federal RapidPenang instead, as the Federal Government's CNY gift (in 2006).

From what I've heard, most of the minibuses moved to Prai and Kedah, while the bus companies started to wind up their operations as they cannot compete with RapidPenang.

Bottom line is transport planning should be devolved. Federal SPAD wont work.

Yes, Rapid Penang is the only bus company now. When it was first introduced it out shined the other bus companies and put them out of business...

it is not a give, but something that federal government control the state transportation.

the best example would be the ferry service between butterworth and island, the company claimed make losses for many years, and hence state government proposed to take over, but federal turn deaf due to political issue and do not want state government to take control of it although federal has failed for many years:cheers:

The "CNY Gift" was actually the exact words used by the former PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he announced the service.

Anyways, TRANSIT has always been in favour of local & regional public transport - so we would prefer to see RapidPenang as something like Transport for London - a local quasi-government regulator of services and owner of critical infrastructure.

TfL owns the underground in full as well as the railway assets for the Croydon Tramlink, London Overground, and Docklands Light Rail, but operations are contracted out to private companies.

Similarly, TfL contracts bus operations out to private companies and controls the fares.

ya, the service and quality is better than previous bus services, but recently it have a financial report that they making some losses.

But i also read that the losses is due to some incorrect way of financial report.

But it would be good to have few other bus companies

It took me one and half hour wasting my time waited Rapid Penang bus from Bayan Baru to Georgetown recently. I think, Rapid Penang is only good in branding with their new buses but service-route wise, small towns in BANGLADESH is way much better ! Wake up SPAD. re-introduce tram service in Penang laaaaar..

I will rather have more frequency than a double decker that might have a greater chance of tipping over in a accident.

ya, you are right. I always enjoy taking buses in bangkok than in Malaysia. Although Bangkok buses are old, really old, but are quite on time, cheap and with frequent trips. Some more the bus conductor are quite friendly.

No point la buying more buses. Double deck la. Single deck la. What's the point having buses here and there (kononnya) but there's no bus stand sign or proper bus stop in Penang? The one in front of Kompleks Bukit Jambul is so dirty with plastic bottles and becoming Little Nepal/Little Vietnam/Little Bangla/Little of everything. Hayya, re-introduce on-time tram service laaaaa...

Just worry the tram will also trapped in traffic jam if there is no designated lane for tram.

True true. They need proper and designated lane. When buses and trams are stuck in traffic jams they fall behind schedule and, because this means that more people will be waiting at the next stops, they fall even further behind schedule leading to bunching and compounding delays....Anyway, how much we talk also, I would say, it brings nothing. Expect nothing is gonna change in Penang in 20 years time. No tram. No MRT. No proper bus lane. What we have is to see all vehicles at the road side in 'suka hati' mode ~

Hehe, since Penang is known as turtle island. So, traffic is like turtle speed in traffic jam, development is like turtle crawl (by compare to KL/Iskandar), etc.
