Bachy Soletanche May 12th, 2007, 12:43 PM What do you think is the second city of the UK, London is of course the first!
Please this is for non-UK posters only.
edited to add: Oops! I forgot to include Belfast as an Option.
Sorry about that.
sydney_lad May 12th, 2007, 12:58 PM Birmingham is known as the second city isn't it??
Camaway May 12th, 2007, 01:13 PM There's no such thing, they are all a big suburb of London.
Cristovão471 May 12th, 2007, 01:20 PM When I think of england I think of London, but I know of Manchester, Birmingham etc.. but they don't have much recognition worldwide, well only for soccer. Pretty much is all the continuing of the london suburbs.
kids May 12th, 2007, 01:54 PM What the hell? Have you ever looked at a map?
unoh May 12th, 2007, 01:55 PM Manchester

Morjo May 12th, 2007, 02:31 PM Manchester because of it's football teams and music culture.
Johnnydemattos May 12th, 2007, 02:40 PM I think its birmigham!
eusebius May 12th, 2007, 02:50 PM As the city to rival London's #1 position, none of course. If one, I'd say Liverpool or Glasgow. Brum and Manc are shopping centres for large conurbations.
Taller, Better May 12th, 2007, 03:26 PM Manchester. Birmingham is bigger, but Manchester has more international recognition.
Corrie rules! ;)
Sideshow_Bob May 12th, 2007, 03:32 PM Birmingham pops up in mind automatically. :)

Not really. I asked this question in the UK forums because I never really thought of Birmingham and what not and always thought Manchester was the second fiddle to London.
EtherealMist May 12th, 2007, 05:58 PM Ill go with Manchester, but Birmingham is pretty close. Isnt Birmingham the second biggest city in terms of population?
I think calling the other UK cities "suburbs of London" is pretty dumb.
.
Fallout May 12th, 2007, 06:32 PM For England it would be Manchester or Birmingham, but for whole UK I think it is Glasgow. After all, its a national capital like London, not just a big industrial place.
Flogging Molly May 12th, 2007, 06:35 PM Bollocks to this! Shoudl know better Stephen!
S.Yorks Capital May 12th, 2007, 06:37 PM Glasgow is'nt a national capital Im afriad. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Glasgow however is Scotlands largest city and metropolitan area.

Damn. I forgot. But still, Glasgow's economical importance let it be a contender.
BTW, there is wikipedia article on this subject:

LOL! You thought Glasgow was the capital of Scotland!?
SpaceMonkey May 12th, 2007, 07:19 PM Birmingham may be 2nd in terms of population, but I'd put both Manchester and Glasgow ahead of Birmingham in terms of importance. Plus, Manchester and Glasgow have much more of a big city feel about them than Birmingham.

Sorry, but that's B.S. Manchester & Glasgow are big, important cities, so are Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol and Cardiff. To say that English cities are just suburbs of London is just plain dumb. It's like saying that Boston & Philly are suburbs of New York or that San Diego is a suburb of Los Angeles.
Fallout May 13th, 2007, 01:05 AM LOL! You thought Glasgow was the capital of Scotland!?
Scotland is small and not even independent, so no wonder it's capital is not as well known as Toronto, which is capital of much bigger Canada;)
Its AlL gUUd May 13th, 2007, 01:16 AM I think Londoners should be allowed to vote
Trainman Dave May 13th, 2007, 02:14 AM Scotland is small and not even independent, so no wonder it's capital is not as well known as Toronto, which is capital of much bigger Canada;)
Ottawa is the capitol of Canada
As to the second city in the UK, this is a difficult assessment:
Current Population: Birmingham
Manufacturing significance: Manchester
Ecclesiastical: York after Canterbury
Maritime: Southampton
Roman Legacy: Bath
Personal: Oxford, where my sister lives!
Mr-Manchester May 13th, 2007, 03:35 AM Manchester is the the only UK city outside the capital that has the overall package for what it takes to be the UK's second city. Manchester by a country mile I say!

haha, Jokes. All they need is more recognition. Atleast you have a good sized population. But too many chavs.
Who knows one day Los angeles and San diego will touch each other (suburbs).
khoojyh May 13th, 2007, 10:19 AM i think second largest city in UK awarded to Birmingham
Telfordboy May 13th, 2007, 11:21 AM Manufacturing significance: Manchester
Birmingham is the bigger and more important industrial city and always has been.
wjfox May 13th, 2007, 11:25 AM Keep this in the UK forum, eh? ;)
