I 1000% agree with you. While London is a really nice city, it's Shard is an ugly Slaughterhotel rip off, but fortunately by far not as ugly as the Slaughterhotel itself. On the other hand Super Tower is one of the most beautiful towers in the world even though it's in fact a Klingon Vor'Cha cruiser rip off :hahano:

My statement remains that it looks like Shard at first view than any other building, and there is no any exertion of mine claiming of rip off with that at all. I think both buildings are beautiful and great in their respective locations.

If there are people who really appreciate and have much concerns for this building in this forum, I should be one of them. Indeed, I would like to see more images of the building as the construction progresses.

Does anybody know why the foundation took that form of construction? It is very much different from the conventional foundations of most skyscrapers I have seen in this forum.

Maybe foundation too large so that reason foundation also diffrent from ordinary construction.

Logical thinking? India has immense inflation, economic slowdown and social unrest on it's doorsteps, this project will (most likely) not be picked up untill maybe the next decade.

The reason for it being On Hold have nothing to do with the ones you've mentioned. The project is stuck with multiple legal issues and criminal proceedings against the promoters.

only the middle part, i think the first few floors are mall like and other stuff, the core is just the part in the middle. still fucking huge though

Yeah only the stuff in green net is the core. This btw I think is the first core so big that it is made in stages :lol: In terms of size I'm pretty sure it bits shanghai tower, and ping'ans cores easily :cheers:

It's a trick of perspective. Going by Google maps, they're about 10-11km apart. The Hyundai Global Business Center is much closer to the Lotte Tower than the Yongsan development, almost right across the river (maybe 2-3km away). The supertalls are going to be pretty spread out in Seoul.

But about 1years ago those ordiance deleted.

Because "heliport" is useless more over ugly and strict building design and limited architecture.

Yes.I saw Lotte World Tower's Progress Schedule somewhere(I don't know now....^^)

Next Year December-70 floor Completed(including Exterior Wall Cladding)
2013 December- Top Out(Completed Floor Construction).

Although I think this,it is very fast Construction speed in accordance with ACS(Automatic Concrete System).

They build most challenging projects around the globe and for the projects of this magnitude this is very likely that they individually develop new construction technologies like faster ACS system, new quick curing concrete mixtures, new pumping techniques and more. Besides this fast construction speed includes only concrete structure construction, to that you still have to add time to construct the crown so the tower most likely won't be toped over in one year.

Well, you know, Incheon towers, Seoul Lite, Hyundai car motor tower and Youngsan project and whatever you mentioned......all are different and nothing to do with Lotte world tower here.
Don't put them in same category. Just because they are projects in korea.(Actually, it is also nothing to with korean government.)

Lotte contruction company is nothing to with SAMSUNG construction or any other projects in Korea.

Lotte construction company doesn't have a histoty of building supertall unlike SAMSUNG construction. Therefore this is really good chance to promote them and compete other korean construction companies.
They will do anything to show off for themselves, using many new technologies in this time. They are quite ambitious right now to become a world-class major construction player. They will not miss this goden opportunity.

I have my doubts about the proposed speed, too, but those aren't the right examples for comparison. Most of these haven't/didn't even start construction; we're talking about the speed of construction once it starts going. And like others have said, there's no use in judging before we know. Stay neutral and poopoo it later if it doesn't meet expectations.

I think that you overgeneralized and simplified it.
There are many reasons against building supertalls in korea, not olny political reason. I mean, it is not that simple, really complicated actually.

These are the main reasons which comes to my mind firstly.
1. There are the height restriction(sky limitations) district by district to protect national treasures or UNESCO cultural heritages.
2. There are some aviation regulations for the safety or defense policies against north korea.
3. There are some traffic impact assessments.
4. Sun blocking(access to sunlight)
5. The destructions of environments
6. According to city plan
7. Most people wants to put money for better quality of life instead of building supertall to show off.
8. Unbalnced developments
And many more....

Lastly, some korean may not like the construction companies or current president but not every korean.
People are quite different and have lots of differnt opinons.
These days many people are not interested in politics, especially youngsters.
And some people doesn't consider that supertall is a symbol of development or achevements anymore.

Actually, kimiwind1184 is the person who visited the construction site in Seoul in person, taking many pictures with his own eyes. I mean he knows the the tower and its surrouding very well. He knows much better than anybody who is judging by only few pictures here.

Also, I don't think there is the similarity between two. :)

It's quite obvious there is a resemblance not only to the Costanera Tower but to many others as well. There are many towers that narrow to the top and many that are a square in the floor plan section. There are also skyscrapers that have that slit on the corner too. It's not to annoy you. All these elements don't make the Lotte Tower unoriginal. The shape and its proportions are different and it already lasts to refresh the design. In my opinion the Lotte Tower design is very original and essential too. The cladding will play an important part, as usual.

Regarding the site visitation. It is really nice that Kimiwind has been to Seoul, but I think that seeing the hole in the gorund can't make anyone a design expert. It must be an awesome and inspiring experience, but the detailed plans would be more helpful if you want to say something about the architecture of the future object. The genius loci is decisive, but so far we all just have a few pictures.

In my opinion Lotte Super Tower is not even close to looking like the Costanera Tower :ohno:

Also I'd like to note that Lotte Super Tower is a masterpiece but Costanera Tower is ugly.

Looking the diagrams, it's obvious that there are similarities between both towers: square plant, the curvature is quite similar (more in the lotte tower, but both of them have the same type of curvature), both of them are totally cladded, and the design of the roof is the same idea (in Shard London Bridge Tower too).

It's not bad! In totally cladded towers is difficult to give them personality, but Lotte tower has it!

Yeah eight years ago I had drawn my first skyscraper there so I know how it works. What do these two drawings present? This is exaclty what I or trimetileno have written. Nobody of us said the towers looks the same and we both think that Lotte Tower is very original. You misunderstand the meaning of a resemblance.

Korea2002, I heard the Lotte supertower is slatted for completion and inauguration in 2015. I don't why you claim it will be until 2016!
1 Floor per 3 days makes 1 year and half estimated to reach the last floor, so basically it will be topped out way before December 2013.
If they work parallelly on the interior, the building indeed will be completed around 2014 and opening will be right on early 2015. That makes more sense.

I will be going back to my parents-in-law's house in February and again in April for 3 weeks each time and I will photograph the progress and anything else of interest and upload here.

One question, what floor is the building at now? Have they started above ground yet, if not, when?

Hi. Yes - these were taken around 5 pm on the 10th of Jan. It looks like the tower itself is starting to rise above ground.

This really is a massive construction site. I'm really looking forward to seeing this tower rise over coming months.

well that's the core rising there in the background (made of concrete ) as for the exterior part we'll have to see I bet it will be made of steal :)

Wow, seoul is incredibly spread out!

^^Actually, it's the densest major metro area in all of the OECD countries. It's just a really big city that doesn't have a single center. Jongno-gu north of Namsan, Gangnam-gu (which means literally south of the river) and Yeongdeung-po are all sort of city centers in their own right, and developments like this tower in Songpa-gu (to the east of Gangnam) and the Yongsan IBD (labelled Seoul IBD in the picture above) pull the aim of a single central district for Seoul all over the place.

with the almost megatalls being so much spread around the city it will most likely be always one of them in the background visible on pictures of seoul :) but it also is quite sad that it wont be possible to capture all of them in one picture.

If you look at Wikipedia at least, Seoul has the densest city proper in the OECD, and if you look at the Seoul National Capital Area, which includes Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do (which includes multiple other cities like Bucheon, Suwon, UIjeongbu, Seongnam, etc.), Seoul and Tokyo are about tied for density. The only reason the Tokyo metro seems bigger is because it's a much larger area.

I think the reason Tokyo looks so much bigger is because it has a main skyscraper cluster (by the bay), and it's on a fairly flat piece of land, whereas Seoul is all hilly, nevemind being in sort of a basin which visually cuts it off from the rest of Gyeonggi-do.

It's not that hard at all. A simple Google or Flickr search is more than enough. Didn't you once say you had never seen a picture of Hong Kong's skyline? Yeah... You probably shouldn't talk about skylines if the only one you have an idea about is New York's.

4 floor rising up!

It's not like I'm complaining but it still doesn't look like one floor in every three days as they promised. But then again towers are usually slow at street level. Just wonder if they finally (if ever) reach that speed. That would be quite spectacular :cheers:

That actually explains most of it. They are not hurrying it because they don't have to. Speeding up the construction costs more money and since they don't plan on returning the costs quick, they might as well do it slowly.

POSCO Wins the Full Order for the Rolled Steel Required for the Construction of Lotte World Tower (123 Floors Above-Ground, 555m tall)

- 40,000 tons to be supplied until its completion slated for 2015

POSCO has secured the full-order for the rolled steel required for the construction of Lotte World Tower (see the bird`s eye view below).
With 123 floors planned for above-ground, and six below, Lotte World Tower, to be built in Jamsil, Seoul, is to be the world`s second tallest building, behind UAE`s Burj Khalifa. The construction is planned to be completed by 2015, using 40,000 tons of rolled steel including regular and thermo mechanical control processed (TMCP) steel.

The Lotte World Tower project is a mega project that requires cutting edge construction technology from around the world both in the design and construction. Consequently, steel used in the project must have good anti-shock capability and be able to withstand high-winds and fire.
POSCO, with a keen grasp of the special features of steel required from the initial stages of the project, worked with List Steel Structure Lab to propose the adoption of extra thick plates including the 800? high-performance grade steel and 120mm thick regular plates, and steel column flat plate structure as well as module-type steel piping
POSCO also opened a briefing session regarding the quality control plan and the features of building-use steel, where the benefits and features of its on-site support and the excellence of the steel being used in the construction was explained, earning the plaudits from the construction experts in attendance.

Moreover, there are good prospects for the construction-stage, with the Lotte World Tower being fitted with 120mm thick large-scale concrete slabs at the ground-floor level, which, as they are already mass-produced, should be in secure supply. Initially, Lotte Construction, which had previously undertaken the project, was planning to use between 40mm and 80mm thick plates welding together. However, the use of two thick plates welded together incurs welding and input costs, resulting in weakening cost competitiveness. This is why POSCO suggested instead the use of 120mm thick high-performance grade steel (SM490TMC). In addition, POSCO decided, and Lotte Construction agreed, that it would produce 120mm plates using a facility that used to produce 80mm high performance steel, with internal quality tests and QA consultation applied on them and supply them to Lotte.

POSCO was able to show to the world the superiority of its high-performance steel plates, through its winning of the full-order for their use in the construction of the Lotte World Tower. It has also enabled POSCO to build its reputation as a total solution provider, through the way it responded to the construction brief. Furthermore, it raised its status in providing more value to customers and using steel application technology by meeting all the needs of customers in areas such as steel sales and proposal of key technologies for better use of steel and higher constructionability.

Looking ahead, POSCO is on course to strengthen its marketing of high-rise construction projects through EVI (Expanded Value Initiative for Customer), and is planning to position itself with the USP of an expert in thick-plate construction.

TMCP Steel
As the thickness of steel used in construction increases, there needs to be greater quantities of alloy elements in order to maintain its strength. Due to this, the carbon-equivalent increases, while the welding quantity decreases. Accordingly, instead of reducing the amount of alloy elements provided, using appropriate controlled rolling and accelerated cooling will strengthen its existing strength while also improving its weldability. Steel produced through such a thermal processing control is called TMCP steel. Generally, for 50 kg of rolled steel, in order to reduce the alloy elements, TMCP manufacturing is used, with SM490TMC, SM520TMC, and SM570TMC also being available.

tokyo sky tree and canton tower are both not considered buildings, but freestanding towers, so they do not count for the title of world's tallest building :cheers:

First 6 floors go slow. After that it all speeds up.

The biggest of their complaints is the location of this tower, which was in the korean air force course.
Plus, there are many haters of Lotte Group that the company build this tower.

That's why it took so long to get the approval this tower.

Anyway, many korean don't care supertalls, at least people around me.
They think supertalls are nothing special, just tall buildinngs, nothing more nothing less. Therefore, there is nothing to dream about.
