** Vintage Hong Kong ~

Hong Kong, once a small fishing village, to being now one of the world’s main international financial centers. The city has transformed & advanced many-fold to what is now a dynamic metropolis, transcending through hardship, crisis and mediocre.

For a city to rise to become the freest economy in the world (for 13 consecutive years), many stories have emerged & inspired the local people to fulfill their potential & achieve the success in their land of opportunity.

This thread will contain the sights & sounds of Hong Kong through the developing eras, and is a tribute & testimony to the strength of the Hong Kong spirit and its endurance through the years. The daily things that HK-ers grew up with & integrated into their lifestyle will be displayed here – the music, the adverts … - the taste of HK life.

This thread is also an example of the teamwork between HK-ers, no matter where they are in the world, Hong Kong is a place that bonds and forms a special connection with people. It’s vibrancy gravitates those that have their life’s touched by this special city.

Kai Tak Airport - Most memorable for the plane-landings due to its location in the heart of Hong Kong amongst the surrounding residential high-rise buildings.

One could literally touch the airplane from the roof-tops of the buildings as the planes descend to the runway. Built on reclaimed-land from Victoria harbour, with the runway extending some 3.3 km. It was HK's international airport from 1926 to 1998, July 6th.

Above, are clips to a documentary of the history of HK's Kai Tak Airport ... You will be missed

I was there the weekend before they closed, and hordes of photographers were all over Kowloon City's streets capturing the descending planes, and another few hordes were at the top floor of the parking lot plane spotting.

I miss Kai Tak too. I hardly remember it. But I remember walking in Kowloon City and seeing those humongous jets roar overhead.

The last time I used Kai Tak was my emigration from HK...

The next time I went to HK it was 1999, and we landed in the new airport.

Thanks (^o^)

In my opinion, 一舊水 is still acceptable, but I don't think it's necessary to spend huge amounts of money on buying books on historic pictures of HK as we can easily gather tons of them from the internet nowadays.

By the way, the refurbishment for New Town Plaza has been progressing for nearly 2 years and now it's almost completed. As we can see, the new layout is much more eye-catching.

Just happen to find this clip on youtube.

The title in HK in the 1940s. I can't verify it's really in the 40s, but must be between 1930s and 1954.

I believe Lugard Road was first built with wood or bamboo before it actually was named "Lugard Road" for scenic walk. As the wood/bamboo bridges got damaged, the whole road was rebuilt with concrete something similar to today structure. Plus the mountain was more barren, the bare rock really stood up in the skyline unlike today.

The history of the road was written briefly in this book:

I was thinking about what do the stations lobbies and platforms look like today along Island Line when I was watching Part 3. The scale of the underground caving as shown in the clip for Island Line was just unimaginable. It kinda look to those historic tomb inside.

In 1982, the Chinese Government, guided by Deng Xiaoping's great concept of "One country, Two systems" and peaceful reunification, began the two-year long historic negotiations with the UK Government, and signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration on 19 December 1984. In accordance with the Joint Declaration, the Government of the People's Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997, thus opening a new chapter in the annals of Hong Kong.

No, nothing for Patten. He's the "Criminal of Thousand Years" in the Chinese government's eye. Sir Patten will never get any remembrance with his name in HK.

Patten is one of the three governors have no remembrance in Hong Kong. The other two are second governor, Sir John Davis (1844-1848), and eleventh governor, Sir William Robinson (1891-1898.) The other twenty-five have something with their names on it, streets, buildings, trials etc. etc. etc. etc.

UN spotlight sought for opera form

http://www.oneinchpunch.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/hk_tingkok_opera.jpg

Nishika Patel

Thursday, November 08, 2007

The governments of Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong will apply to the United Nations for Cantonese opera to be included on a global heritage list as part of efforts to promote traditional Chinese culture.
Officials from the various administrations are working to push Cantonese opera onto the UN list to boost global awareness of the art form.

"The three places are actively working together to prepare for the submission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to apply for the inscription of Cantonese opera on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said in a written response to a Legislative Council question yesterday.

The Unesco list is designed to ensure better visibility and awareness of intangible cultural heritage, which includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, cultural spaces and traditional craftsmanship.

Chan Sau-yan, director of the Chinese Opera Information Centre and professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said the SAR government was following the general policy of Beijing to promote different types of traditional culture to the world.

But Chan noted the government would have to take firm action on preserving Cantonese opera rather than simply seeking foreign recognition.

"It's ironic that the government will only recognize its own culture if it is recognized by foreign bodies," he said. "If the application is successful, it proves that foreigners are recognizing this art form and maybe the government will then do something to preserve it."

He added that it was appalling that Hong Kong does not have a school of Cantonese opera, and that the government would not finance a Hong Kong academy for performing arts.

"This is the most traditional art form and has a very long history. It attracts many people," Chan said.

Nathan Road was restricted to one way traffic during the MTR construction. It was two-way before and after.

I don't think that's the same Tai Lam. I am guess this picture is looking north towards Beacon Hill. The existing Tai Lam is on the east side of Nathan Road, and this one is on the west side.

1.他叫「肥彭」,他有三位很漂亮的千金;
2.香港差不多每一間涼茶店的當眼處也貼著他喝涼茶的照片用作生招牌;

Super Yummy!

My father did a good bit of traveling in Asia in the 1970's. Here are some pics from Hong Kong. His photos were untitled on the back, so most of the pics I'm unsure of where they were taken. These I think were from HK. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The Last Governor - BBC documentary

3hmeQRAcq68

BBC documentary (Final part of a five part series) about Chris Patten, the popular last Governor of Hong Kong before Hong Kong reverted back to Chinese rule, and his democratic reforms which were undone by China.

He was quite possibly the first and only leader Hong Kong ever had (with the possible exception of Sir Murray Maclehose) that put Hong Kong's interests above that of her colonial masters, be that China, Japan or Britain.

It also show the exceptionally shoddy, two-faced and dishonorable nature of Hong Kong's tycoons like Gordon Wu and Li Ka Shing. It shows how willing they were (and indeed still are) to send the Hong Kong people down the river for a few dollars and their shamefully sycophantic attitude towards Beijing (with a few precious exceptions such as Jimmy Lai and Simon Murray) despite having foreign passports and having prospered under British rule.

Since then the Hong Kong people have become more politically embolden, with 500,000 people marching in 2003 calling for full universal suffrage for the Chief Executive and the resignation of Patten's successor Tung Chee-Wah after a series of spectacular policy failures.

Today, Mr. Patten (who left Hong Kong with and %80 approval rating), is welcomed back to Hong Kong with great enthusiasm by the people whenever he returns to visit.

Patten seems to have a left a good memory for Hong Kongers. Whenever he's in town for a public event there's plenty of reaction and crowds to catch a glimpse.
