I have to say that these pictures made me nostalgic of the days I spent in Tunis years ago. I was an exchange student at the University of Tunis. Feelings are mixed, good and bad alike.

Anyway, Tunis was part of my life some years ago.

P.S. That girl up there is pretty hot, on Tunisian standards :)

Thanks, a nice city. I was expecting a lot more modern areas/buildings. It's one of the better countries in Africa in terms of all economic indicators so I'm a little surprised.

I love it! It looks beautiful, the architecture and the setting looks really nice. It's so close to that beautiful beach too. I definitely want to go to Le Tunisie in general.

Tunis (Arabic: تونس, Tūnis) is the capital of the Tunisian Republic and also the Tunis Governorate, the population of greater Tunis approaches three million.

Situated on a large Mediterranean gulf, (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Halq al Wadi), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At the centre of more modern development (colonial era and post) lies the old medina. Beyond this section lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said.

The medina is found at the centre of the city: a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colours, boisterous and active trade, a surfeit of goods on offer ranging from leather to plastic, tin to the finest filigree, tourist souvenirs to the works of tiny crafts-shops.

Just through the Sea Gate (also known as the Bab el Bahr and the Porte de France), begins the modern city, or Ville Nouvelle, transversed by the grand Avenue Bourguiba (considered by many to be the Tunisian Champs-Élysées), where the colonial-era buildings provide a clear contrast to smaller older structures. As the capital city of the country Tunis is the center of Tunisian commercial activity, as well as focus of political and administrative life in the country. The expansion of the Tunisian economy in the last decades is reflected in the booming development of the outer city where one can see clearly the social challenges brought about by rapid modernization in Tunisia.

In the 2nd millennium BC a town, originally named Tunes, was founded by Berbers and also over time occupied by Numidians. In the 9th century BC, the city was taken over by Phoenicians from Carthage. The Berbers[specify] took control of Tunis in 395 BC but it was soon lost when Agathocles invaded Africa and established his headquarters there. When Agathocles left Africa, the Carthaginians took control of the city once again.

In 146 BC, the Romans destroyed Tunis (along with Carthage). However, the city was subsequently rebuilt under the rule of Augustus and became an important town under Roman control and the center of a booming agricultural industry.

LAKE OF TUNIS - SUNSET. Tunis does not have a sea-front The lake was polluted after 200 years of human activity but since the 70'sa massive cleaning project took aplce and now the lake is decontaminated . fishermans are now back as you notice in the pic .

in the middle the tiny island is protected due to the wild species living their ( unique in the world) the ruins are the old Spanish fortress at the time of charles Quint who tried to conquer Tunis ion the 16 Th century .

Actually Tunis it self does not have a seafront yet keep in mind that Tunis is between two lakes well one is a sebkha and the other is alake that is connected to the sea :

In this pic in the middle of the page were yousee like a canal that is the place of the new project the Mediteranean gate by Sama Dubai , the biggest project in Africa so far ...

Yes indeed the cleansing took over 20 years ..

The city hopes that the lakes will pass the cleasing test and open to the inhabitants of tunis as of next summer

The final completion is due for 2018 !!!
they finished the soil testing they ar demolishing the old structures and they are expanding then boulevrad at this point .

the first bulding wich will the the twin towers 9 similar to the Emirates towers in dubai will begin shortly after that wich should be around the nd of this summer ....

A long way for completion but the results will be splendid and transformation the Tunis skyline be apparent to all, globally. It's appears to be a major project. I would seriously like to visit Tunis soon actually, then travel down to Sfax and Djerba.

A long way for completion but the results will be splendid and transformation the Tunis skyline be apparent to all, globally. It's appears to be a major project. I would seriously like to visit Tunis soon actually, then travel down to Sfax and Djerba.

I have the answer for you ..

We could start with the noth area with CArthage SIDI BOUSAID and LA MARSA they are all connected that the BANLIEUE NORD and i m from LA MARSA

nowadays you ahve the new residentail arae of ENNASR EL MENZAH AND EL MANAR very fashionnable etc ... but the Banlieu is a really old residential area before even the French invade teh country and it is know for it`s Tunisian farniente ...

Well at tunis it is different . the northern suburbs along the sea cosat are the traditionnal residential arera for the rich famailies of tunis and the residence sof the ancient royal family .

but nowadays , the eastern suburbs are richer and they are realy booming , the South esat is poor indeed ..

Well it is representing the post Bourguiba era , tle Changement like we call it in tunisia that occured in 1987 with the new president ...

it is suppose to represent the goals of Tunisia to join the developped countries before 2020 wat the end of the XII th Plan ... that was 21years ago and the clock is still clocking ...:lol::lol::lol:

Tunisia is now an emergent country and 2020is a duable goal !


I found this :

A centrepiece for one of the major squares of Tunis -- a 38 m-high clock tower monument. The granite plinth and flared base support a tower formed of mashrabiyya work in bronze coloured steel. To complement the clock tower, there's a musical fountain.

Bab B`Har ( Sea Gate) this was the ancient limit of the old city, the Medina . The median was as any other major Tunisian cities fortfied with several different gates.

This one leads to the El Zitouna Mosq and the difefrent souks .

Is not that old, they are alright, I been in Budapest last year, Tunisian trams looks better knowing that Hungary is a European country.
