Wenzhou Lucheng Plaza - Landmark Tower

Wenzhou City, China

In 2006, developers approached SOM to create a high-end, mixed-use development connecting the city of Wenzhou’s riverfront and its downtown. Developers wanted to build a distinctive tower that would, like Shanghai’s Jin Mao, become an iconic presence on the city’s skyline. SOM proposed a 71-story tower with an upper-story hotel distinguished by a novel, outward-facing atrium opening up to views of the Wenzhou region. Further distinguishing the design was a proposal to drape the tower in a diaphanous veil that would give it a subtle, unique nighttime luminescence.

That hole in the top of the building is great, I like it :)

The huge holes are a waste of spaces and serve no practical purposes, they are there only to make the building look a bit more funky than an enclosed box.

Said that, Wenzhou city really needs some face lift-up, I visited the city last summer and it was really not to the standard I was expecting to see for such a rich region of China. Note though, Wenzhou is always 'neglected' by the central government due to its awkward location and hostile surrounding terrain. The merchants of Wenzhou have literally built an airport and a railway all by themselves with very little help from the government - a scenario which is very rare in socialist China.

The upper one maybe, but besides aesthetic purposes the narrower hole (and maybe the top) does serve to reduce the wind stress on the building, so it may have reduced the size of the core as well, reducing construction costs. Hmmm

wow , huge tower with a box design .. whats up with the holes ? anyway its good to have it . people can see each other at the window .. i hope there will be an open restaurant at the center of the hole
