Nice to see a new residential building go up in the Loop! It'll help bring the 24/7 reality to the Loop which is needed! I remember plenty of times arriving around 1 AM at Union Station off of Amtrak, leaving the lobby and walking through a deserted Loop. It was very 'end of times' feeling. Like I was the only human left in Chicago. And we need to change that!

1AM? Hell, I've felt like that at 8PM on a Saturday.

Not the most attractive design, but still a solid building that will fill that spot nicely. I went by the site during lunch and did see soil testing. I'll post a couple photos when I get home from work.

I think it's plenty attractive, but it looks much more like an office building than an apartment tower. Of course, that's probably just SCB being contextual.

.....(I)t looks much more like an office building than an apartment tower.....

My reaction was the same - I've been thinking all of these months that it was an office building. Nice to see something tall & residential w/dark cladding again. :)

A notice was posted in the residences at 208 W. Washington that demolition will begin at 215 W. Washington on September 9 ( I assume they mean Monday the 10th) and continue through October 9, 2007. My assumption is that the demo work will involve the small building next to the White Hen on the Southwest corner of Wells and Washington.

As many of you probably know, the building directly west of the White Hen has been demolished. Within the last few days, two excavators have been digging up the site.

I think they are just taking out the basement of the building they just tore down next to the 7-11

Sorry, I don't have any photos. The hole next to the White Hen was dug before the excavators got there. That was completed by the demolition crew. They are currently digging towards the southwest corner of the lot, an area that was was previously vacant. It would be towards the upper-right hand corner of the picture in post #8 in this thread.

Daley hopes new West Loop apartment tower will have worldwide impact

by Brittany McHenry
May 06, 2008

Ground was broken Tuesday on a West Loop site for what will be Chicago's first green residential building.

“This project will not only stand in the history of Chicago, but I believe in this country and in the world,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said.

So true I_A_H. I have been a big fan of this project and 200 West Lake for that reason. They will both help create the 24hr Loop that has been anticipated for the last 30 years. Although a major hotel is still needed in the North Loop, and that will come with Waterview.

BTW , no 200 West Lake thread here??

Jupiter Realty Company Announces 'Topping Off' of 215 West Apartment Tower
CHICAGO, Oct. 19

Jupiter Realty Company today announced the "topping off" of their 50-story apartment tower in Chicago's Loop. Don Smith, a Jupiter principal, noted "the pouring of the 50th and final floor of the 389-unit building marks a significant milestone in the construction process for what is on track to become the newest and one of the few LEED certified high-rise rental residences in Chicago and the first apartment building to be built in the central Loop in 15 years."

What I don't like about this project is how much space is occupied by the spiraling entrance to the parking garage. Is that really necessary? I guess they figured "oh, it's Well Street, so who cares."

ChiBriTri

They were forced to do the Wells St entrance because they wouldn't grant them permission to have the entrance and exit on Washington.
