1. Central Terminal Building (R2 billion)

The Central Terminal Building (CTB) construction is the largest single project ACSA has ever embarked upon. Construction is progressing well and once complete, it will provide the required international terminal capacity in terms of holding lounges, airside commercial areas and boarding gates. In addition, four 90m baggage carousels will be up and running for the massive new generation aircraft such as the A380.

Undoubtedly, this development will help ensure that ORTIA is fully prepared for the 2010 World Cup. The CTB will comprise a multi-level terminal building located between the international and domestic terminals. In line with existing airport flow, departures activity will predominantly be on the upper level with arrivals activity on the ground level. Mezzanines will be developed for commercial activities along with basements for services and baggage handling. The Gautrain Station and the rail line will be elevated above the airport precinct (over the upper roadway system), It will be directly connected to the CTB and will therefore enjoy all the amenities offered within the CTB and the other terminal buildings. Scheduled completion date: Late 2009.

2. International Pier (535 million)

Holding lounges, airside commercial areas and boarding gates will facilitate international travellers and expand the departures and arrivals areas of the international terminal considerably. The existing Duty Free mall is also due to expand into this area. The pier development will allow for a substantial increase in the number of passengers boarding and disembarking through connecting stands (air bridges). As a result, improved passenger service will help airline operators improve their turnaround times.

What does the International Pier Project entail exactly? Construction of an extension to the pier building together with associated infrastructure to the north and east of existing international terminals. What will the pier consist of? A double level structure, with connection to the same operational levels as the terminal building – arrival and departure levels respectively. The existing bus station serving departures to remotely parked aircraft will be redeveloped in close integration with the pier. Scheduled completion: Early 2008.

3. Echo Apron (R219 million)

Airside capacity will increase as a result of the additional aircraft stands. The expansion of apron areas (parking bays) will be complimented by the International Pier, and development will accommodate nine contact stands in the form of air bridges linking terminals and aircraft directly. Four of these stands will accommodate an A380, the largest aircraft ever manufactured, and will be equipped with dual air bridges to load and offload passengers to upper and lower levels (2 decks make up the A380) of the aircraft at the same time. For passengers who need to be bussed from the aircraft, two remote stands are being developed. One new taxiway will be developed and another will be reconfigured to serve the upgraded apron. The number of aircraft stands on the Bravo and Delta aprons will change slightly to provide for better traffic flows and increased spatial requirements for A380 type aircraft. Taxiway shoulders, service roads, ramp handling equipment parking areas, fuel, storm water drainage and water and electricity are other services that are also being upgraded.

4. Terminal A Departures Upgrade and Relocation of Upper Roadway (R76 million)

The new upper roadway system that is currently underway at ORTIA, in order to make way for a new concourse on the International Departures level in the International Departures Terminal building.

The completion of the new upper roadway system project is the first phase in the Terminal A Departures Upgrade (TADU) project. This will make way for the second phase of the project which will entail the development of the new spacious public concourse at International Departures. The new upper roadway system which is being built to direct traffic around the existing covered roadway system, also acts as the current International Departures drop-off zone.

The new upper roadway system is expected to be completed by February 2007. This will leave the road clear for the start of development on the new public concourse which is expected to get underway thereafter. The new development will allow for the creation of a new wider concourse, which will include additional retail space and increased passenger counter space, which will allow ACSA to reconfigure counters to airlines. The essence of this development is to allow for a much larger public circulation space. Also important, is that the increased space will translate into increased capacity for the processing of passengers.

The additional retail space will essentially accommodate food and beverage vendors, as well as news agents and sweet shops. The development also includes an open deck area that will enable visitors and passengers to relax. Scheduled completion: Late 2007.

5. Multi Storey Parkade (R470 million)

The new MSP2 comprises the provision of 5200 parking bays . In addition to the welcome added capacity, the new parkade will boast some great facilities, including:

Pay on foot - an automated payment system that will accept all major credit cards in addition to cash. Visitors will be able to pay using their credit cards at the exit booms. In addition, debit cards will be accepted at ACSA parking offices.

The improvements will also offer a simpler solution to customers that arrive at the exit boom only to find they have forgotten to pay for their parking. In such an instance, the customer would simply insert the parking ticket, followed by a credit card. Once the direct debt is recorded, the credit card is returned, followed by a card shaped receipt. The boom will open as the receipt is removed.

License Plate Recognition System - As a vehicle enters one of the airport parking areas, the LPR system captures an image of the vehicle and driver, automatically recording the registration number of the vehicle on the parking ticket.

When the driver has paid for the parking and inserts the exit ticket at the boom, the system automatically reconciles the registration number on the ticket, with the registration number of the exiting vehicle. The boom will only open if the number on the ticket corresponds with the registration number of the ticket.

The system will shut down a potential exit strategy for car thieves and will be also a useful customer service tool. With just a registration number, parking authorities will be able to identify the date and time at which the parking area was accessed, as well as the level at which the client entered. This would also be most useful in helping drivers allocate “lost” vehicles when they forget to note their colour-coded parking level.

Inter-floor Connectivity - the parkade will boast full internal connectivity, with people able to access any floor once within the parkade. Connectivity to existing parkade - drivers will be able to access the existing Multi Storey Parkade (MSP) from floors 2, 3 and 4 of the new parkade.

Scheduled completion: First phase to be completed during the first quarter of 2007 (initial offering of about 1000 parking bays). Final completion is scheduled for late 2008.

6. Absa International Trade Bureau (AITB)

The Absa International Trade Bureau (AITB), officially opened on 15 February 2007, is the new trade centre that was opened at O. R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) by the International Trade Bureau (ITB). Located directly across from the International Arrivals Hall at ORTIA, the facility spans 2 200 m2 and is able to accommodate permanent exhibition space for 122 of South Africa’s premier exporters. In addition to the ground floor space available for export companies to promote their goods and services, the mezzanine level provides office space for South African local, regional and national trade promotion agencies, as well as meeting rooms for visitors to the trade centre and a training facility.

Besides housing a permanent exhibition, the trade centre affords visitors and exhibitors access to several other useful amenities, including a business information library, a bookstore with African trade resources, refreshment areas, and a special “trade event-of-the-month” display area highlighting the leading industry trade shows in South Africa for a particular month.

The AITB management team is marketing the centre within ORTIA, through domestic and international carriers’ in-flight magazines, and by facilitating linkages with other “trade marts” in the U.S., Europe and Asia. This also includes coordinating inward buyer programmes and taking “ITB Pavilions” abroad to major international industry trade shows.

Thanks for the photos!
This is a sorely needed project. The airport is confusing to first-time visitors who need to transfer between terminals (and run the gauntlet of 'helpers' who will gladly show you the way for just R10 or more ).

But even worse than confusing, it's crowded. The domestic terminal is fine, but the international terminal has been desperately short of check-in and departure space for as long as I can remember. These additions will be very useful.

I'm glad to see so much progress on the Central Terminal Building. In August when I saw it, it was just a large hole in the ground. The Y-shaped pillars look interesting...I'm anxious to see the roof they'll support.

Nice photos.. Those Y shaped pillars should either be supporting the floor above (Gautrain station) or just the roof.. They keeping it in the same theme as the domestic terminal, cant find the photo of the Y-shaped columns but they have them too..

Just read the Sunday Times and saw an tender advert from ACSA requesting consultants to assist with the planning, designing and integration of the proposed midfield terminal for the period 2007 - 2013. Looks like the development of the airport is going continue after 2010. Wonder if it will incorporate the proposed 3rd runway too. Anyway they better keep some things in mind - like access to the Gautrain. Also wonder if the new Durban airport will ever get to its 8M throughput p.a. if both ACSA and the airlines keep the hub-and-spoke system alive.

Hi Everyone!

Nice page. I was wondering if anybody has any information about the O.R Tambo airport upgrades that was announced in May. This was the long term plans up to 2022, I have a few details.

The plans include: un upgrade of the airport to handel 55 million passengers a year. This includes the new center terminal, new runway(part of it will be suspended over Great north road and atlas road), extension of the old runways, the movement of the main entrance to the N12 and the buy out of 3500 properties including the Denel property.

I was wondering if anybody have any more info on this.

Hi.

Could only find this in afrikaans.

Beeld 19-05-2007

Schalk Mouton

The cranes visible in the first picture, on the freeway side of the hotel, are working on a new multi-storey parkade. (The pink bit in this tiny site plan (http://www.acsa.co.za/home.asp?pid=2781)from ACSA.) As you said, definitely not temp parking.

OR Tambo 'could be closed'

24/07/2007 08:58 - (SA)
Schalk Mouton, Beeld

Johannesburg - South Africa's largest and busiest airport, OR Tambo in Kempton Park on the East Rand, might be closed and replaced by a new airport somewhere else.

This option was being considered to make provision for the expected explosion in the number of passengers to flow into the country by 2022.

These expansions formed part of plans Acsa, the airports company, presented to Transport Minister Jeff Radebe at the weekend in lieu of a decision on how to prepare for the growing number of passengers.

It is expected that about 51m passengers will arrive here by 2022.

Three options

According to Nothemba Noruwana, Acsa's spokesperson, Radebe was given three options.

The first would be the expansion of the existing airport with a new centrefield passenger and cargo terminal and maybe an additional runway.

According to this plan, one of the existing runways would run into the present Bonaero Park residential area, and a third runway could run over large parts of this suburb and over the Caro Nome agricultural holdings.

The second and third options would be to close down the airport and replace it with a new airport in another area, or to build a second airport to supplement OR Tambo.

Noruwana could not say where such an airport would be built, but said it would be "close to Johannesburg, to the south or north of the city".

Radebe was expected to meet with Acsa at the end of the month to express his opinion.

"Everybody (who forms part of the decision-making process) believes that something must be done, but it is not yet clear what it should be," said Noruwana.

Residents are worried

Residents of among others Bonaero Park and Caro Nome were increasingly unsure about the influence of these expansions.

Shaun Trevelyan, an estate agent who has been working in Bonaero Park for the past 23 years, said the market value of properties in this area was dropping.

"During the past four years we sold between two and five homes a month, but during the past two months we have sold none," he said.

Last month, Acsa cancelled a meeting with the community, at which these plans would have been made known, on the minister's instructions.

According to Noruwana, Acsa will reschedule this meeting as soon as they have received feedback from the minister.

"There is a perception that we are hiding something. That is not the case. We just don't yet have the information the community expects from us."

"People want answers about whether their homes will be involved, but we cannot provide those answers yet.

"The masterplan is a document that changes all the time and this was leaked to the media. People are making critical decisions about their lives based on something that is still a concept."

Noruwana said Acsa's management preferred to expand the present airport to building alternative airports.

She said Acsa would involve the community in the decision-making processes, such as environmental impact studies, "when the time is right".

According to Acsa's predictions for the increase in passengers the new terminal must be completed by 2013 and construction must start at the end of next year.

I'm sure we can all list many times when we arrive at Jo'burg on a fully loaded jumbo, only to taxi past empty jetways (or even worse, a jetway unloading a 737 just arrived from a regional flight), go north to a remote stand somewhere near Pretoria, and then have to board the bus fleet to drive back to the main terminal. Hopefully there will be much less of that!

Will the new pier include any new arrival space (passport control, baggage halls, etc.) on the lower level? Or will the existing two halls still handle all international arrivals?

I meant for arrivals, not departures. Will the new pier include any additional space for arriving international passenger processing, or will the existing two halls still handle all such passengers?

For departures, last time I used this wonderful corridor that connects the domestic check-in level with international departures. (Not sure if it's still there now that the construction is in full swing.) If you already have a boarding pass for your international flight, the corridor is a breeze - it has its own emigration control desks with very little queuing. Of course this route only works for those of us flying into Jo'burgh from other SA cities. I detest the main international check-in hall. :ohno: In almost 20 years, I've never once seen that place be anything other than a zoo.

Delta strikes gold in SA

THE US carrier Delta has turned in a stunning report card eight months after it inaugurated a service to South Africa that skeptics believed would fail.

No USA carrier has operated successfully into sub Saharan Africa for almost twenty years, so it was somewhat ironic when the man whose job it was to turn off the lights then for Pan Am, was back in Johannesburg to report on Delta’s success.

South African-born director of sales for Africa, Middle East and India, Jimmy Eichelgruen told TravelHub that passenger numbers have not only proved the skeptics wrong, but also surprised Delta.

In eight months the airline has carried some 34 000 passengers originating in the USA and 46 000 originating in SA. While the average load factor has been 80 %, since mid June they have not had an empty economy seat available on any of their daily flights.

Equipment on the route will be upgraded from a Boeing 767-300 to a 767-400 with effect from October 27. The refurbished larger aircraft have 22 more seats of which seven are in business class. All passengers will now have leather seating and their own on-demand in-flight entertainment.

Eichelgruen said that Delta is now being taken seriously as a force that is helping develop South Africa tourism. This month Johannesburg features on the front cover of their in-flight magazine and the city will be positively exposed to their nine million passengers.

The flight from Atlanta is via Dakar in Senegal and is proving an attraction also for passengers from Latin America who would like to get to Africa, he said.

Should be done pretty soon - was at JNB last week and the new parkade looked 75% done from what I saw. There's not much finishing to do inside parkades - minimal plumbing, basic electricity, no bulkheads etc so when its finished externally it's pretty much done internally as well AFAIK.

I remember reading that the new pier has an area for passengers who need to be bussed to the plane. Is that the area shown in the last few pictures?

Yes. Incidentally the escalator shown is the longest in Southern Africa apparently.

annman
October 29th, 2007, 11:08 PM
I'm 99% those are bussing gates, as boarding always at all international airports occurs at a second story level when using a jetway. I'm actually really shocked in one sense that ACSA didn't expand ORTIA sufficiently. Yes, the upgrades are impressive, I do agree it is a massive improvement... but, I do think they should've constructed a northern pier adjacent to the east/west international pier to accommodate more airside aircraft parking and embarking via jetways. Plus, domestic also needs a pier. Having almost all linear parking is a very inefficient way of operating embark/disembarkation and aircraft parking. I just think if ACSA wants to invest billions in airport infrastructure, we should do it properly and not have tourists and business travellers have to slug it from the terminal via a bus up the stairs to their aircraft. I don't even believe the CTIA will have sufficient jetway access when completed.

Jakes1

yip these were the bussing gates - and it was 19 - 30.

Umhlanga

Annman, the long-term goal is to build another terminal, somewhere between the 2 existing runways (According to an ACSA plan I saw a few years ago, it's supposed to go at the southern end of the airport compound, near the N12.). So that will eventually lead to more jetway gates, but such relief is a long way off. Buses will be a staple at JNB (and CPT) for many years.

In my experience at JNB (all of it pre-pier), flights are assigned gates on a seemingly random basis. The exact same flight, from the exact same city, on the exact same type of aircraft, arriving at the exact same time is sometimes assigned the same gate as the previous day, or sometimes not even assigned a gate at all, but sent to the remote parking area at the north end.

JNB is one of the best airports anywhere for planespotting. It gets a wide variety of airlines and many of them spend an extended time on the apron.

The domestic terminal is great and so is international departures once you get beyond check-in. However international arrivals aren't good. The newer T1 is ok but T2 has been a mess for years and looks worse each time I pass through. It's unbelievable that ACSA has done nothing to improve this section. It doesn't even look as if any maintenance work has been done. Last time I was there the ceiling was falling apart, there were exposed wires and broken tiles and everything was filthy. If it hadn't looked this way a year ago I'd have assumed it was about to be gutted. It's embarrassing to hear the comments from foreign passengers. I realise most large airports have older sections which often don't match the newer sections but T2 has been languishing at a standard below some of the worst African airports for far too long. ACSA needs to do something pronto.

Agreed Greg... Went through there last upon my return to SA in Dec06. I was surprised that this was OR Tambo. Landing internationally in Cape Town this Dec07, CTIA international is a million times better... okay, granted it is a terminal built only a couple odd years ago. However, CTIA is once again upgrading and with the most international passengers arriving in SA via ORTIA, this airport HAS TO provide at least a decent first impression. Another thing... ORTIA needs to get baggage handling problems under bloody control.

Nice pics KS - with respect to the 3rd one:

I've noticed from peoples pics as well as being at the airport that inspite of the fact that ACSA installed 2 airbirdges per gate in the new pier, most airlines (those handled by Equity in particular - hence most of the international carriers into JNB) only use one. I find this bizarre since using both would save time on boarding and hence improve on time performance. One of the older gates in the international section also has 2 and I've almost never seen them both being used simaltaneously.

I haven't seen the actual plans, but from an architect's logical reasoning, I would assume they will... I'd have to assume those corridors and airbridges are temporary to keep capacity high along the terminal for aircraft parking, whilst they construction hoard right behind it. Once the CTB is done, would make sense the airside would then flow seamlessly between the international and domestic terminals.

Hi

I visited the airport yesterday to pick up passengers and would like to report the following that I observed in the 90 minutes I was early for their arrival (a gate was open next to the domestic terminal and the guard was friendly, in domestic level 1 is now only a curtain that seperates the new CTB with the domestic terminal and I could look at the terminal building):

1. The Central Terminal is nearly completed with a lot of lights on last night.
2. The design is similar inside than the current domestic terminal with a very high ceiling at the entrance on the ground floor. The drop off section in connected with "bridges"to the public area - similar to the domestic terminal.
3. It seems that the shopping and food court area of the domestic terminal will be extended into the new CTB. The shops and restaurants that used to be next to the new CTB have temporarily been relocated to the second level of the parking garage.
4. From the top floor and first floor of the multistory parking garage I could see a further set of escalators and a lift that have been installed that leeds to a level lower that the road and on the same level as the basement parking with access to the basement parking (from the ground floor) - I assume that their will be no need anymore to cross the roads with all the traffic to access the parking garages but one will access the CTB on this basement level as well as on level two - underneath the upper road way. - the escalators, lifts and access have all been completed but is still boarded up - ready for the 1 September partial opening.
5. I assume that the temporary walkway on level 2 of the multistory parking garage between domestic and international terminals will be closed after the 1 September date.
6. From the restaurant on the departures level of the international departures level, the access bridge to the Gautrain station can be seen that will link the Gautrain station to the CTB on level 3.
7. The passenger concourse box of the Gautrain station have been completed as can be seen on the Gautrain website.
8. The openings between the new section of the International terminal (the old road) and the check in counters have largely been completed although no new check-in counters have been build as yet. It seems that the lighting in the check-in portion of the International terminal are in the process of being upgraded to make the whole place better lit and not so dark.
9. Accross check in counters 95 - 104 on the level 3 Nandos have opened. Where the old restaurants were on level 3 above the check in counters many new offices were build and are now ready to be occupied.
10. The arrivals area is still a bit of a mess with all shops and currecy exchange moved to temporary structures where the road normally runs. The Terminal 2 and Terminal 1 Arrivals are link by these roadside shops.
11. The level where the old banks and restaurants were located in the international arrivals hall are being extended to create a floor that will run the full extend of the arrivals levels.
12. Above terminal 2 the state protocol lounge and even more office space are already operating.
13. The second phase of the second multistory parking garage are progressing quickly and the walkways to the new parking garages have been completed - much wider passages.)
14. The Gautrain bridge pillars are progressing well and it seems that only the pillars closest to the international terminal still need to be completed. After this the bridge can be pusshed into position.

It seems that the high level of Chaos at OR Tambo will only remain for the remainder of this month and much less chaos will be experienced from 1 September (this date from an ACSA official).

The next phase will be to make the people (Passport control, Customs, Security etc) as possitive and welcoming like the infrastructure will be.

Regards

From the Cape Argus (http://www.capeargus.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=4584793)

30 August 2008
Brand new OR Tambo just months away
Terminal building to offer shopping mall, better passenger flow and tightened security
Kevin Ritchie (Cape Argus)

By Wednesday, 80 000 people a day will realise there is light at the end of the tunnel as they make their way in and out of Johannesburg. In four days' time, the Airports Company of SA (Acsa) will quietly inaugurate the first phase of its R2.2 billion central terminal building.

Radiating off a massive African-themed atrium more in keeping with Johannesburg's modern megamalls, the new building will boast an impressive retail mall with all the accoutrements, but its real purpose is to revolutionise the way Africa's largest airport handles passengers.

At present, the airport handles 80 000 passengers a day on 600 outgoing and incoming flights. It handles 240 000 items of baggage in the same period. These are figures that grow exponentially every year.

And, typically, OR Tambo was never built with the thought that African travellers are normally seen off by 10 or more people and greeted on their return by the same number.

"Airports weren't designed with that number in mind or the fact that these 'meeters and greeters' will come to the airport three hours before departure or arrival," says OR Tambo International airport general manager Chris Hlekane.

"The international thing about airports is that as we design them, the dynamics of the passengers are changing."

The new central terminal building is intended to address this.

For a start, the public areas, from the central terminal to the international departures area - long a dingy, drab and stuffy section - have been extended and lightened up dramatically.

Another cultural aspect that the central terminal addresses, says Hlekane, is the typical South African aversion to queueing or any other form of time wasting.

Acsa has installed self-service check-in terminals away from the traditional check-in counters and light strips above the parking bays in the parkades.

These lights, which automatically turn red when the bay is occupied and green when vacant, are a huge time saver, a relief to anyone who has ever tried to find parking in peak hours at the airport. The parking bays can now hold up to 12 000 cars.

The central terminal also provides for the seamless integration of other road transport.

The Gautrain station, several metres above ground level, is complete and has been handed over to the train construction team.

"I don't have the timeline on hand," says Hlekane, "but you can see the tracks from the balcony."

You can also see the concrete pylons, which will raise the track almost four storeys above ground level as the Gautrain ultimately rolls right into the central terminal, disgorging passengers inside the building and from there, down escalators to international departures and onto their flights.

There are plans, too, to integrate the eventual eastern rollout of Johannesburg's Bus Rapid Transport System to OR Tambo.

But all of that only deals with getting people into and out of the airport - the central terminal's overarching aim is to link the northern end of OR Tambo, which currently houses the two international terminals, with the southern end and its domestic terminal - a distance of 930m.

By the time the third and final phase of the project is completed in June, the distances will be shorter; there'll be new signage making it more difficult to get lost; and the working parts of the terminals - as opposed to the initial passenger reception and holding facilities after check-in - will be integrated.

This means new operational facilities from baggage carousels to customs desks and boarding areas can be redirected at a moment's notice to serve either domestic or international departures or arrivals, depending on the airport's operational needs - which at peak times equates to 50 to 55 aircraft arriving or taking off every hour.

Another innovation is the airside corridor that runs on the apron side of the building to allow the rapid transfer of international passengers to connecting domestic flights and vice versa - a fundamental advance on the previous system.

"We're the continent's hub, we're the biggest airport on the continent, but the dramatic increase in passenger volumes spurred on by the advent of low-cost airlines has meant that we've seen radical and ongoing change in our facilities over the last decade," says Acsa's communications manager at OR Tambo, Nothemba Noruwana.

"There has been a boom in international air travel too and we simply can't rely on the buildings we have. We have to create efficiencies wherever we can to keep the flow moving."

This is a mantra for Acsa as it looks to build a new airport at La Mercy in Durban and a new central terminal at Cape Town International Airport.

"Our challenge is to keep the majority of people moving like they had planned to do."

It's something that has made the project that much more difficult than others; OR Tambo had to remain operational throughout the renovation and refurbishment, as well as cope with unexpected discoveries, like the fact that the slope from south to north was 9m, effectively forcing passengers catching connecting flights to walk uphill for almost a kilometre.

It has all been fixed now and Hlekane is months away from having his new purpose-designed airport.

"The challenge is to marry what we've done to our service levels because airports can be a traumatising experience."

Part of this involves putting Acsa's customer service desk, the call centre effectively, on the ground floor of the atrium and deploying other customer service staff throughout the terminal, to answer questions on anything from baggage to directions and transfers.

Hlekane's biggest nightmare is two-fold: satisfying the passengers and complying with aviation security requirements. In many ways, the two overlap.

"I ask myself whether I've ensured that the systems are in place to guarantee that we will be allowed to operate. Secondly, are we giving passengers value for money? How close are we to closing the gap between customer expectation and reality?"

Baggage pilferage is one area of security that needed attention. Last year, theft from luggage as it was being unloaded and placed on the carousels was at 30 cases a day.

A year later, after the creation of a specialised baggage theft unit, this had dropped to six a month.

The targeting of rich passengers is another issue, especially those coming into the country with foreign exchange and expensive items.

"We're an international hub, we attract all sorts of different people - and criminals because we have a concentration of affluent people," says Noruwana.

There are over 1 000 police officers, SAPS and an Ekurhuleni Metro Police department stationed at the airport, but it isn't enough - Noruwana feels the airport has to be proactive.

There've been reports of syndicates targeting international travellers, robbing them on their arrival at home. The establishment of a high-level, multi-disciplinary taskforce has led to high-profile arrests, including the person police believe was the mastermind.

The new banking areas in the central terminal will remove passengers from prying eyes to secure areas to change traveller's cheques.

"The journey's just begun," says Hlekane. "Excellence is about that, moving closer to the expectations of passengers, getting a strong policing presence without becoming intimidating, changing the mindsets, not just of the 1 200 Acsa staff on the premises, but the other 20 000 staff working at OR Tambo.

"There are 80 000 people passing through here daily - someone won't be happy. Yes, there'll be bad experiences and there'll be complaints, never compliments.

"Most people will have had a good time, they'll have achieved what they wanted, we'll have brought them closer to their loved ones. It's sad that those who had wonderful experiences never speak about them.

"But we need to replicate their experience, pass it on to everyone and do this every single day."

OR Tambo's new arrivals hall ready for the rush
IMKE VAN HOORN | JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Sep 02 2008 17:59

A cleaner is sweeping dust from the brand-new, brown and white stone floor. A construction worker is doing a check of the staircases while project managers, wearing yellow reflective vests and pink hard hats, inspect the building one last time.

At the shiny new international arrivals hall at OR Tambo International Airport, empty desks are waiting to receive the first passengers. From early on Wednesday morning, this space will belong to the millions of airline passengers arriving in South Africa's biggest city from all over the world.

Shaped like a rugby ball lying on its side, the 18 000-square-metre, three-level Central Terminal Building at OR Tambo International Airport is spacious with bright white walls.

According to the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), international passengers will be "welcomed in style" -- a far cry from the dusty, crowded space that has served as the temporary international arrivals hall for the past three years, where passengers needed to find their way through small passages, confused by badly worded directions and notices.

According to Kesavan Naicker, manager of all construction projects at the airport, an important requirement of the new building was to create more space and make it easier for passengers to find their way by "reducing the number of decision points".

After passing through passport control, passengers face a choice between two colours: follow the passage with red walls if they have goods to declare, or go the green route otherwise.

Then comes the entrance to the spacious new arrivals hall, which is two-and-a-half times larger than its predecessor. Waiting behind a sleek-looking glass wall will be those who have come to welcome their friends or relatives.

From the new space, newly arrived passengers can walk directly to the domestic terminal, without leaving the building, or pass through an underground tunnel to the parking lot.

"Passengers no longer need to go outside to walk to another terminal," says Naicker.

The design of the Central Terminal Building, which cost R2,3-billion, places departures predominantly on the first floor, with arrivals at ground level.

From December this year, phone shops, foreign exchange services, a post office and various eateries will already be serving customers on the third level. By April next year, the international departures hall on the second floor will open, with 75 new check-in counters.

Redesigned yellow, blue and green direction and information signs -- to replace the old black-and-white ones -- mean international passengers won't easily get lost.

The new arrivals hall is part of the airport's preparations for the Soccer World Cup in 2010. OR Tambo caters for about 80 000 passengers daily.

Last year the airport served about 19-million passengers and, according to Acsa, it will be able to accommodate 24-million passengers come 2010. It expects 350 000 extra passengers during the six weeks of the tournament.

The airport's services will be boosted by the installation of extra baggage carousels: two extra at domestic arrivals, in addition to the six existing ones, and 10 instead of the current seven at international arrivals. Four of these are 90m baggage carousels designed for bigger aircraft like the Airbus A380.

And for those who couldn't face the confined space of an aircraft toilet, these amenities have received special attention. Says Naicker: "People complained they couldn't find the toilets. In the new building every zone has its own toilet facilities."

Even modern dads have not been forgotten, he adds. The new toilet facilities include separate nappy-changing rooms, "so fathers can also change the nappies of their child and mothers can wait with the luggage".

New OR Tambo arrival hall opens
Sep 2 2008 7:01PM

Johannesburg - Wednesday sees the opening of the first phase of the R2.3bn central terminal building (CTB) at Johannesburg's OR Tambo international airport.
The CTB development is the largest single terminal building project that the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has ever embarked on.

Tomorrow's opening will see most arriving international passengers being processed through OR Tambo's new international arrivals facility at the CTB, which includes a more user-friendly customs control process. Once international passengers have been processed, they will be received into a new international arrivals public concourse, two and a half times larger than OR Tambo's current international arrivals halls.

The opening of the 18 000 square meter space will also boast some retail facilities including a post office, cellular phone shops and foreign exchange services with various eateries expected to open by December this year. Next month will also mark the opening of the CTB's retail facility and has been designed to link directly into to the current domestic retail level.

By April next year, the new departures hall will boast 75 new check-in counters, effectively linking O.R. Tambo's international and domestic check-in facilities. At this point, passengers will be able to enjoy a fully complete multi-level terminal building located between the international and domestic terminals. In line with existing airport flow, departures activity will predominantly be on the upper level with arrivals activity on the ground level. The mezzanines will offer retail facilities and basements will be in use for services and baggage handling.

The project will be fully complete in December next year following the complete installation of the new baggage management system at international arrivals. Once the system is complete, a total of ten new baggage reclaim carousels will be in operation, four of which are 90 meter baggage carousels specifically designed for the massive new generation aircraft such as the Airbus A380.

Gautrain station

Further, the construction of the Gautrain Station has been completed and has been handed over to Bombela for final finishing. The station is the first Gautrain station to be completed and handed over. The rail line will be elevated above the airport precinct (over the upper roadway system) and will be directly connected to the CTB.

OR Tambo's general manager, Chris Hlekane, said: "Tomorrow's opening is an important milestone as it marks the start of the completion of the final piece in our massive infrastructure development programme in the run- up to 2010. It gives me great pleasure to declare that OR Tambo is on track for 2010 and beyond."

The first phase of the new Central Terminal Building opened yesterday and according to David O'Sullivan from Radio 702 that did an outside broadcast from the airport yesterday, it is magnificent.

The open space inside is big enough to swallow a building the size of the Airport Intercontinental Hotel inside with the roof nearly 40 meters high. Lots of natural light and even more amazed passengers that is experiencing a better international arrivals experience than the one of the last 8 months with the conversion of the old arrivals that already started.

All this and not a single photo today in any newspaper or on the 702 website? Who will take the first photos?

It looks very good, but unfortunately you must still exit the CTB towards the road before you can enter the domestic terminal - but this seems temporary as lifts and more escalators are being installed.

Access to the International Check in area are still a problem as a person will have to walk to the old section to access the elevators and escalators. I am however sure that this is temporary and will change soon.

A little bird told me that SAA check in will move the CTB next year with Emirates taking over the existing SAA check in.

Yes, that is a cool feature. In fact, there is a Gloria Jeans coffee shop near the triangular 'head' of the plane, just as you enter the apron from the man departure terminal.

On that note, a new pathway has been opened between the main departure terminal and new apron. Previously, it was a straight passage as you went up a gentle ramp. This passage has now been closed off. Now, you go up a short ramp at the end of the main terminal and turn sharply left to a newly opened retail section. Exclusive Books and Music Moods have relocated here. There are also at least 3 high end curio stores in this section, ending with the Gloria Jeans coffee shop (which is where the new apron begins). An interesting feature of the new apron is that you alight and disembark on different levels, unlike American and some European airports where you encounter passengers who are awaiting their flights when you come off your flight.

Also forgot to mention for those who haven't been in the new apron that the skybridges occur on both sides of the apron. Air France also has its stunning frequent flier lounge located here.

As far as I can remember, Gates 1 - 18 are all skybridges in the international side with 1 starting next to the domestic terminal sky bridges (next to CTB) and up to 7 will be the old sky bridges. 8 to 18 are the new skybridges and the bus gates will be 19 to 30.

5 of the gates on the new pier are fitted out to be able to handle the A380.

The current walk from the furthest gate to the new arrivals area is very long, up to 800 meters, luckily travellators were installed.

Impressive!!!

A question. Arrivals hall A2 and A1 (wow wow wow) will be for international arrivals only? Will theu replace the current international arrival hall or will the current one become Arrival hall A3

I am speculating from the background of everything that I read so my predictions follow:

The current Arrivals A1 in the CTB will become the additional luggage carousels for the domestic terminal - I think the A1 arriving passengers use these carousels destined for domestic use.

The old arrivals A2 that used to be used by SAA and its partners may still be used as we speak accept that a different exit is used (speculations).

The Old Arrivals 1 is being reworked and in future the arrivals will all be integrated with only one exit from the arrivals area - the current A2 arrivals. All arriving passengers will go through a common and enlarged passport control section and then enters the baggage carousel area where up to 13 luggage carousels will await the passengers. Up to 4 will be 90 meters long to accommodate high capacity planes like the A380.

We must give ACSA time to install the Mezzanine floor in the old arrivals terminal and to build these high capacity carousels in the old public area of the terminal. I am sure that when this is completed all arrivals will change to exit only at one gate while ACSA will close the old SAA luggage carousels to update them to the same standard as those in the old A1 arrivals area.

What I am speculating about above makes sense for me as the following advantages will be created:
1. Consolidating Passport control will reduce average waiting times as current idle times at certain times of the day is the same time that the other terminal can be busy.
2. Only one customs inspections area
3. Carousels will no longer be exclusive to only a group of airlines that will reduce crowding currently being experienced - especially at SAA carousels in the mornings.

Lets wait and See

It's all looking so good. Now my only gripe is international check-in which is dark and ugly. Otherswise it really is worldclass.

The International is already looking better with the conversion of the old upper road into a new public area, very airy and light. Big openings have been created between this new part and the old check-in area and the check-in area already looks lighter. I am sure that when the transformation is completed many new up-lighters would have been installed to flood the area in light.

The new CTB will also contain check-in counters and I have heard that SAA check-in will move to this area. Emirates will apparently take over the current SAA first class check in and some the SAA counters.

When SAA check-in moves in April next year, I think ACSA will use the time to rework the current check-in hall from that side up to counter 70. From 70 to 98 already feels much lighter due to the big windows next to the Lufthansa check-in (build about 8 years during the last expansion of the check-in before the new domestic terminal was build).

As a person that travels a lot (more than 20 intercontinental flights a year), I must add that the duty free section of Johannesburg ORT Airport is some of the best I ever experienced. The variety between expensive and cheap and with enough restaurants and bars are hard to find. The lighting can be updates to bring in more light and I think the Mezzanine level in the shopping area can be better used. The wasted space upstairs next to the Virgin lounge is just astonishing. The airport must additional escalators to this floor and enable more restaurants and shops to open.

unfortunately for both the check-in area and the duty free area, No skylights can be installed due to a level of offices on the original roof of the international terminal.

Lets wait and see

Yeah the entrance area before check-in a big improvement but hope they still do mroe to improve check-in area. Didn't realise some more desks are being added - good news.

I agree about duty free at ORTIA. There's a great selection of great looking shops and unlike most airports it's not a string of shops that are repeated every 100m or so - such as Frankfurt etc.

OR Tambo International Airport expansion, South Africa
By: Sheila Barradas
Published: 3 Oct 08 - 0:00

Name and Location
OR Tambo International Airport expansion, Gauteng, South Africa.

Project Description
Following the successful completion and commissioning of the R450-million new domestic terminal in mid-2003 at OR Tambo International Airport (formerly Johannesburg International Airport), the development focus at this airport has now shifted to the international segment.
The project will include:

A central terminal building (CTB). Towards the end of 2009, the international and domestic terminals will be linked by means of a CTB currently being constructed. This will result in a central passenger-processing unit for both domestic and international passengers. The facility will be equipped with infrastructure for baggage handling for the Airbus A380 and will be connected to the Gautrain rapid-rail link for ease of access by rail.

A multistorey parkade, with 5 200 additional parking bays will be added to the current 6 900 bays through the construction of a second multistorey parkade.

The Terminal A departures upgrade (TADU) and upper roadway relocation will accommodate the high growth in international passenger traffic and relieve the congestion currently being experienced at the international check-in area. The completion of the new upper roadway system project is the first phase in the TADU project. This will make way for the second phase of the project, which will entail the development of the new spacious public concourse at international departures. The new upper roadway system, which is being built to direct traffic around the existing covered roadway system, also acts as the current international departures drop-off zone. This will leave the road clear for the start of development on the new public concourse, which is expected to get under way thereafter. The new development will allow for the creation of a new wider concourse, which will include additional retail space and increased passenger counter space, which will allow Acsa to reconfigure counters to airlines. The essence of this development is to allow for a much larger public circulation space. Also important is that the increased space will translate into increased capacity for the processing of passengers. The additional retail space will essentially accommodate food and beverage vendors, as well as news agents and sweet shops. The development also includes an open deck area, which will enable visitors and passengers to relax.

A new international pier will involve the construction of an extension to the pier building, together with associated infrastructure to the north and east of existing international terminals. The pier will consist of a double-level structure, with connection to the same operational levels as the terminal building. The existing bus station serving departures to remotely parked aircraft will be redeveloped in close integration with the pier.

The Echo apron development will increase airside capacity. The expansion of apron areas (parking bays) will be complemented by the international pier, and development will accommodate nine contact stands in the form of air bridges linking terminals and aircraft directly. Four of these stands will accommodate the A380, and will be equipped with dual-air bridges to load and offload passengers to the upper and lower levels (two decks make up the A380) of the aircraft at the same time. For passengers who need to be bussed from the aircraft, two remote stands are being developed. One new taxiway will be developed and another will be reconfigured to serve the upgraded apron. The number of aircraft stands on the Bravo and Delta aprons will change slightly to provide for better traffic flows and increased spatial requirements for A380-type aircraft. Taxiway shoulders, service roads, ramp-handling equipment parking areas, fuel, stormwater drainage and water and electricity are other services that are also being upgraded. A new bus station serving departures to remotely parked aircraft has been redeveloped in close integration with the pier and came into operation in June 2007.

More recently, it has been reported that a new R8-billion terminal will be built to accommodate growing passenger numbers and air-traffic movement. Also included in the plan is the construction of a new cargo facility to meet the ever-increasing growth rate of just-in-time shipments in and out of the country. The new terminal building will be constructed in the current open space between the two runways at the airport and will have its own domestic and international check-in facilities. The planned R8-billion capital investment will be in addition to the R3-billion already allocated to upgrade the airport before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Value
Total capital expenditure is estimated at R11,4-billion.

Some R3-billion of the capital expenditure will include the central building, the multistorey parkade, the international departures concourse expansion, the echo apron development, and the international pier development. The balance of the capital expenditure (R8-billion) will be spent on a new terminal building.

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has reported that it will spend R21,9-billion on infrastructure developments at its network of ten airports over the next five years.

Duration
All projects are expected to be completed by 2009.

Latest Developments
Construction at the airport is about 70% complete. Acsa has opened the first phase of its R2,3-billion CTB at OR Tambo, taking the airport one step closer to a construction-free airport by mid-2010.

When completed in April next year, the CTB will connect the domestic and international terminals. The remainder of the building will be opened in two phases, with the new international departures hall opening in December 2008 and the extended retail centre in April 2009. Once completed, the departures hall will boast 75 new check-in counters, effectively linking OR Tambo's international and domestic check-in facilities. In December 2009, Acsa will also have completed installation of the new baggage management system at international arrivals. Once the system is completed, a total of ten new baggage reclaim carousels will be in operation.

Besides the CTB, several other projects at the airport have been completed or are close to completion.

The final phase of the parking area will be completed by December this year, bringing the total parking area at the airport to about 14 500 bays.

Acsa also recently handed over the OR Tambo Gautrain station to the Bombela consortium for completion.

On Budget and on Time?
Not stated.

Good news on the new mid terminal. will be something to see!!! i just dont think it should be for both domestic and international. keep things more together.

i'd love to see the plans to link the terminals, cause they will be some way apart and i doubt a new entrance will be allowed, so people will need to travel from current terminal complex under the runway.

Good to hear the plans for another airport seem to be shelved

Some pic's from my visit. Was highly pissed off, not because I lost the name of the Alfa chick I chatted up at the show, nor was it because I realised only at the airport that the pic I took of her and the car was blur!!! The reason was, when I checked into my flight, I asked to dude to get me a window seat, & he did. But when I got onto the plane, I go to my row only to find an old lady in my seat! So I told her politely that she seems to be in my seat, she looked at me blankly as to seem I was retarded and speaking utter gibberish to her, and then proceeded to show my boarding pass clearly showing that that was my seat, she turned her blody head and looked out her freeken window! which suppose to be mine! I didnt want to be a child about it, & thought about telling the air hostesses but they seemed to be busy with this 1 lady & her 3 children running up & down the aisle.

Anyways, I took Mango back to Durban & was fortunate to sit in 1 of their brand new 737's. The aircraft was absolutely silent, & take off was something I didnt feel at all, normally you feel like the seat is sallowing you alive, but none of that was present and the pilot was gunning it skywards! Touch down was much the same, almost effortless and hardly a bump felt.

As for the shops at the airport.... b-o-r-i-n-g.... Music Moods, Coin Shop... I mean really... we need some exciting shopping happening at our major airport... really now. Why not H&M, or Virgin Megastore or ESPRIT... :ohno:

But the Alien Spaceship is super cool!

^^ I couldn't agree more. Think there are more retail outlets coming though.
For CTIA, would love to see the following, well, this goes for ORTIA too, some outlets I think are upmarket, but South African in nature:

Nando's; have to have our famous peri-peri chicken!
Dros; you don't get more a la carte Boerekos than them.
Steers; our true answer to American-fast-food.
Primi Piatti; SA's contemporary way of doing Italian.
*we need something like a Moyo, some upmarket African cuisine!

Exclusive Books; 'cos you must have an awesome bookstore
CNA; just must, for those travel needs like mags and maps

The obligatory awesome Duty Free store of course!

Hilton Weiner/Urban Degree; true SA mens' fashion
Jenny Button; same for the ladies
YDE; something youthful, quirky and SA designers only!
Cape Union Mart; more rugged, outdoors' gear for those "safari" tourists

Woolworths Food; because sometimes you want something yummy for a snack on the plane or in the terminal

*plus all the other stuff, like a quick-snack-shop, pub, curio shops etc.

i think it would work, other big airports do have high-end fashion stores like Frankfurt has Hugo Boss etc.

dysan1
November 6th, 2008, 12:43 PM
Hugo Boss is in JHB international departures already.

Some of the brands listed are not ideally suited to an airport. Lets be honest i wonder how well the new markhams will do in the CTB...i have been past that store like 10 times since it opened and never seen anyone in it...

BUT i do like the new Mugg with its well organised take away section...the white choc with strawberries muffin is a goodie!
