I took that early last August along the N1 in the Karoo. Just a few days earlier, there were small amounts of snow even in the Johannesburg and Pretoria suburbs, but that is fairly rare.

Snow is common in winter on the highest mountains of the Cape, KZN & Free State.

Then you should've phrased your question more specifically, Worm.

If you're talking about snow on city streets that needs to be plowed, then no, I'm not aware of any major SA city that requires regular snow removal.

Roads through some of the higher mountain passes are sometimes closed because of snow, however.

is it rare to get snow there cuz of its geographical location on the southern hemisphere?

Sutherland in winter (and at night at any time of year) can be very chilly. But it's one of the few towns that receive semi-regular snowfall. And like I said before, no city of any significant size receives annual snowfall.

Geography has almost everything to do with the lack of snow. SA is not far enough south to receive regular winter snowfall. Combine that (relatively) northern latitude with the fact that winter is dry season in most of SA, and you're left with not much snow, except in the mountains of the Cape (towns such as Sutherland, mountain ranges such as the Sneeuberg, Swartberg, etc.), where winter is the wet season, and the even higher Drakensberg areas of the Eastern Cape, KZN & Free State.

Sutherland experiences the most extreme weather changes in SA, it has the hottest temps in Summer & the coldest in winter

Sutherland is bladdy freezing but no other town in SA gets snow or gets that cold. (cos of the crisp air sutherland is where the biggest telescope in the southern hemisphere is located)

And yes as any 6 year old who has ever picked up a text book will tell you that it is ever so slightly too warm in SA to have blanket snow in our cities!!!! In SA if it gets down to about 18 degrees it is described as chilly on the weather forcast and 15 degrees was described last night on SABC 3 news as freezing!!!!

The freestate towns closer to the lesotho border gets a nice dusting of snow at least once a year (usually in middle july). In 1996 we woke up in the middle of the night because of weird creaking noises. Ended up it was our garage roof collapsing under the weight of the snow. Bethlehem had more than 40cm of snow, and towns like clarens had 60cm in places. Airplane hangers collapsed, roofs caved in, telehone and electricity lines broke, roads were closed - they had to fly food into clarens (many tourists were trapped). This was the worst snowfall in 30years at that stage.

Usually we expect between 2 and 10cm of snow. Because of the 1996 storm we had snowfights at school way into august. Other towns that get regular snow? Eastern Cape towns, Freestate and Mpumalanga around the Ermelo area.

Snow really is not that uncommon at all.

Snow shuts section of the N2

May 22 2007 at 12:07PM

The N2 near Kokstad was closed on Tuesday morning after heavy snowfalls overnight, traffic authorities said.

KwaZulu-Natal transport department spokesperson Nonkululeko Mbatha said KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate officials were trying to arrange an alternate route.

It is believed that the Brookesnek Pass about five kilometres outside Kokstad on the N2 is the section of road that has been closed.

Mbatha said the department had received reports of "slippery roads" in Nkandla and Dundee. Sleet was reported to have fallen early in the morning in Dundee.

There were reports of light snow in Vryheid and the nearby mining town of Hlobane was reported to be covered in a blanket of snow.

I remember the 1996 snow. Wasn't that when the N3 was closed at Harrismith and thousands of motorists had to pitch up in the town? I think snow even fell as low as Howick.

Hogsback all fun and games in the snow

The chilly weather is set to continue for the next few days

May 23, 2007, 07:30

As the whole country is reeling from the effects of the cold snap, the tiny town of Hogsback in the Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape resembles a winter wonderland. Many locals say it is the heaviest snow to fall in the area in the past 15 years.

Many took time out from work to get a real feel of how cold winter can be. It was a time for adults to be kids again and for kids just to be kids.

Snowballs and snowmen are the order of the day, good news for those seeking a winter thrill. The chilly weather is set to continue for the next few days.

Many people made the effort to go to the mountains above Hogsback and it was well worth the trip.

Nice pics!! :) Jo'burg is still fairly high (1700m+), so i'm not suprised to see it gets that cold there.

We've been getting some nice snowfalls here in Australia over the past couple of weeks. Our ski season began 2 weeks ago.
