it would actually be the tallest in West Bay, 600m high!!!

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7189/oryxtowerbk7.jpg

Traditional muscharabir patterns give a traditional arabic night-identity to the modern building.
The world biggest LED-screen is part of the architecture.

this is possibly the ugliest building proposal i have ever seen, and that includes the the thing they proposed in dubai that looked like it had a massive tumour. the proportions are all wrong, the straight side doesnt fit in with the curved side, and the horns just look stupid. I hope this gets rejected, doha has great potential to become an amazing modern city, but this will ruin everything, they'll have to build 700m buildings all around it just to make sure its hidden. Please doha do not build this tripe, the oryx may be the national animal but you dont see them building kangaroo shaped buildings in australia or golden eagles in america etc. Buildings designed to look like animals do not work this is horrible.

Still waiting for anyone with information on whether this is 600m to roof or to spire. From the first render, it appears that the roof is at 600m, but the thread title has 600m as the official height.

Also, all of the renders make it look hallow. It's kind of annoying.

You were probably hating it so much that you never noticed the 600m level marked on the first render. Looks like roof height to me.

With the antlers, I'd guess 750m or so.

As for the design, I love it. I used the Oryx antler shape for braces once on a pergola I built. We have a herd at the wildlife park in Glenrose [Fossil Rim]., They are very beautiful animals.

If the renderings are correct, it could really rival Burj Dubai.

If you make a rough measurement with a ruler or the measure tool of Photoshop, you will see that the "spires" have about 40 percent of the height of the rest of the building. That means about 840 metres total height. That might be taller than Burj Dubai, at least for people who count in spires (I don´t).

Is it just me or in that render is the 600m mark only two thirds of the way up the building? If so that would make the top of the 'horns' around about 900m?

Hollie Maea
December 19th, 2007, 09:52 PM
I have a feeling that the 600m marker is just incorrectly placed, and that 600m will be the top of the "horns", simply because it doesn't look nearly that high.

Dohas Horny 600m Tall TV Tower

Published on 2008-01-15 by Skyscrapernews.com

National pride in something is a wonderful thing. So proud is Qatar of their national animal, the Oryx, that proposals have been put forward to build a super-tall skyscraper to honour it.

Named non-surprisingly the Oryx Tower, it will stand an impressive 600 metres if it gets built and comes from the drawing board of Austrian architect Gerfried Ramsauer.

Triangular in shape the tower thins out as it reaches its peak and will sport some unusual and innovative features and be instantly recognisable by its homage to the Oryx - its amazing antler spires which instead of pointing upwards curve over slightly.

The tower will have a glass façade but this is not bog standard, double skinned, two a penny glass façade but rather this will, if it gets built, be the worlds biggest LED screen.

The tower incorporates the Media RETRO façade and RETROluxtherm blinds into its design which will allow images to be projected onto the outside of the façade making this not only a fully functioning skyscraper but also a massive communal television. How cool would the film The Towering Inferno look at that size?

The clever part of this innovation is that the goings on inside the tower will not interfere with what's being projected outside and the projections will not obscure views to the outside world, pleasing both T.V enthusiasts and those within the tower who appreciate the panoramic view that's on offer.

This will allow the tower to transform its look with patterning as well as T.V pictures or have the colours fade through the spectrum creating a giant lightshow on the Doha skyline.

Traditional Muscharabir patterns down the sides of the building will give a traditional Arabic look at night proving that the past and the present can be melded together successfully whilst the general structure is expressed by crossbracing that zig-zags diagonally up the sides.

It's suspected the tower will be used largely for office space although nothing official has been released as to its possible function as the project is still in the design stages.

Such an interesting and unique design will have many fingers crossed or in the case of the square eyes amongst us, the TV remote finger poised in anticipation for approval to be given to this tower and work to begin on site.
