Emirates Towers
Dubai, UAE

HEIGHT: 355m/1,163 feet and 309m/1,014 feet
FLOORS: 56 floors and 54 floors
COMPLETION: 2000
ARCHITECT: Norr Group Consultants Int. Ltd.

This pair of towers pierce the sky over Dubai with spires over 1,000 feet tall; an appropriate way for the United Arab Emirates to welcome in the turn of the millennium. The taller tower's main function is to hold offices. The lesser tower is mostly taken up with a hotel. The strength of the towers is conveyed through the concrete columns on the three corners framing the remainder of the facade which is primarily glass.

The atrium is impressive and the two buildings create a unique visual experience but I dont really fancy them.

An article I found from the web

Twin Peaks
On a moisture-laden summer day in Dubai, edges are blurred. Cars race by on Sheikh Zayed Road, spasmodically disrupting the shimmering still-life. High-rise after high-rise stands dutifully erect on either side of the thoroughfare, a sentry to the horizon.

In the distance, two monoliths rise above the rest, huddled in graceful solitude. They are set back from the city’s artery. Like two children ashamed of their size, they watch from afar as the littler ones line up to play.

Then, as one leaves the throb of traffic, drawing nearer through weaving avenues, the towers begin to move. Here a road bends, the view changes, a whirl of concrete; there a lane dips, the angles shift again, a pirouette in steel. Seldom does a 51-storey behemoth seem animate, and yet here, two of them appear to dance. Under a hazy blanket, two giants gently waltz.

And as the day grows cooler and the air more transparent, the dance step quickens, metallic surfaces twinkling, contours growing bolder. The children are gone, and in their place is a noble testament to form and life.

When three lines meet

In the summer of 1994, seven international architectural firms were invited to compete for a project: a 30-storey building on Sheikh Zayed Road. Seven ideas were submitted, four were shortlisted. The program changed. Now, twin towers were called for, set back from the highway and framing the Dubai World Trade Centre when viewed from the south. The height of the towers was to be at least twice that of the Trade Centre. Another submission, a winner — NORR Group Consultants — was chosen, and the Emirates Towers project was born — a landmark development constituting a business hotel and an office building.

According to Hazel Wong, design architect for the project, and at that time representative of NORR, the animate nature of the towers was not merely a fortunate turn of events. “It was presented in the competition as a composition similar to a pas-de-deux. Clad in aluminium panels with copper and silver reflective glass, the towers capture the changing light of the desert sun. So as you drive around them, they change from every angle. It’s a dynamic composition rather than a static one, and that’s very important, especially when the buildings can be viewed from all parts of the city.”

At a height of 350 metres, the Emirates Towers office building is the tallest in the Middle East and Europe — an achievement in its own right, but all the more impressive considering the seemingly ethereal silhouette. Rooted in stepped, granite-plated structures that cascade onto gardens and water features to cover 169,000 square metres, the slender towers soar in geometric simplicity, tapering off to two points of light in the sky.

“To achieve the height,” says the MIT graduate, “I started focusing on an equilateral triangle form, which serves a few purposes. First of all, it distributes the structural load at its three farthest corners, which would give the stability that a high building needs. But beyond that, it is a form that is evocative of the Islamic culture: in the pattern of a triangle, the points represent the earth, the sun and the moon. And recurring circle elements in the tower, at the base and at the top, echo the circle of the ‘timeless whole’, which means eternity in the Islamic context. So, very subtly, the Islamic culture is integrated.”

It is this subtlety, perhaps, that makes for a very un-Arabic pair of buildings. Catering to the business sector, the Emirates Towers were designed to appeal to any and all nationalities — the pure sculptural forms may sit just as comfortably in Hong Kong, New York or Prague.

However, a more conscious effort to Arabise the site was made in the bed of structures from which the towers blossom. Housing a shopping centre and parking facilities, the underlying tiered formations ripple outwards in what Wong likes to think of as “shifting sand dunes in the wind”. These and the terraced plazas, lush landscaping and 80-metre-wide waterfall combine to form an oasis in the heart of the “concrete jungle” that is Dubai. But even here, the clean, curvilinear planes reflect the simplicity of the two buildings they serve.

“As you move from the base to the top of the project, you look at very earthy materials, from pre-cast concrete to granite and clear glass, which gives you the transparency, up to more high-tech materials such as aluminium panels, insulated reflective glazing and stainless steel. In doing that, you make the transition from roots to technology, which really takes Dubai into the second millennium.”

A fine outcome for what started out as a 30-storey office block.

8.5/10 - I've tacked on an extra point for how amazing they look at night. The slim trianglur shapes help them take to the sky, and the additions added here and there give them a nice, futuristic air. Plus, they can relate to each other very effectively. Finally, that soaring atrium is amazing!

But the facades could use a bit of livening up - the sections that are primarilly stone look rather bland, if not harsh, and detract form the overall appearance And I"m not quite sure about the roofs

the design & height are impressive...very creative...the triangular roof lines look great...about the only thing I don't like is how separated it is from the rest of the city but then again we're judging the buildings!

Maybe Trances can help me out here

Are these towers, esp the office (taller one) like Kingdom Centre in Saudi Arabia in that the top 1/3 of the buildings are ornamental

I see 355 meters, yet 54 storeys to me says half the building is being taken up without floor space, either that or you are some tall people in UAE ;-)

I like the designs, but I hate buildings that are ornamental...people complain about Freedom Tower as cheating, but I hate these Hidden Cheats even more, like Kingdom Centre, Domiko (or whatever it is called) Tower in Tokyo etc...

I have never been a huge fan of these twins, I will be very happy when Burj Dubai is built so taht these are no longer Dubai's tallest

On a different note, I had no idea only 650,000 people live in the city of Dubai, are all these buildings office space?

The following is a production photo from the new sci-fi movie "CODE 46" with Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton, opening in North America on Aug 6th

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/mgm/code_46/tim_robbins/code2.jpg

Part of the movie was filmed in Dubai.

Emirates towers, to respond to a question, are office building the 355 m and the 305 m tower is a 5 star hotel and they are united by a shopping arcade. I love Vu's Bar, on the 51st (top) floor of the hotel. The view is great, the bar itself is GREAT.

I was up at VU's last night... I love the ET's and everything inside. So elegant, subtle, yet beastly and innovative.

I tried to read into Hazel Wong's source for ideas in creating this, but my reasearch was unconclusive. Nevertheless, I still believe that the towers carry an idea which was first introduced by Dali on one of his works. It is called Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus from 1935.

It is the two figures facing each other but not directly, protruding noticeably above and beyond everything else around. I think the pics speak for themselves... Have a look a the link below and tell me what you think!??

http://www.virtualdali.com/35ArchaeologicalReminiscences.html

And the reason why it is so striking to me is because I have an ultraviolet interpretation of this painting in my apt!!! and it is spectacular and huuuuuge!!!!! I will try posting a picture of it when I get a chance!!!!

Cheers,
Roberto

These two buildings seem to argue- indeed to bite!- at each other rather than to harmonize. The shot in the fog is great: fantastic!, but, looking at the night-shots of Dubai, there's a building to the right which captures my eye, rather than these towers: I guess I prefer symmetry.

Dubai's Twin Towers: very interesting architecture, moreso because they AREN'T the same height, but I'm glad they're not in my town. They wouldn't fit here. Very up-front Twenty-First Century. Very aggressive buildings. Perhaps it suits the landscape.

7.5/10

Overall, I think they're pretty cool. Like the way different facades and glass colors/shapes mix to form quite a unique modern set of towers. I wish more bldgs used bronze/brown glass. The entire complex they rest upon is very attractive as well. Would look pretty interesting if eveything developed thickly around them. They almost try too hard to be different but IMO they succeed. when i first rated this complex back during my early days in ssc, i thought that those buildings are really ill-thought out, so i gave them a really bad ranking.

but now, i find those towers to be quite intriguing. their triangular shapes really make them look retro from some angles and they have a nice, crisp, and clean look to them. i don't like the back side of the hotel tower, but everything else about them is cool.

if i can change what i ranked for these two buildings, i'd give them a 9 (9.5 for the office tower and 8.5 for the hotel tower)

Not a big fan of these towers, a little too much blank grey facade for me, although a glass curtain wall would be very energy inefficient under the harsh middle eastern sun so I suppose I shouldn't complain. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the National Commerce Bank (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=126082) in Jeddah.

But we're rating the Emirates Towers together and they do work very well together so I give them 7/10

9/10 I have a love/hate relationship with these two. At first I feel its merits no better than a 6. It annoys me that their height in entirely due to super thin spires. But in this case, the spires work very well for the general aesthetics. add a point. there are so many small touches that are really cool about these 2 also. On the flat back side of the hotel tower you can tell its an open lobby area. it shows up better in the picture taken at night. you can see the large 30+ floor hollow area. the horizontal notches on the trunk of the tower actually make is seem a little shorter than it should. minus a point. large glassy circular lobby under a triangle shaped tower- fun with shapes. add a point. no matter what angle you look at them, their height doesn't seem impressive, even for being in the middle of a flat desert. lose a point. nice use of glass and coloring. add a point. somewhat twin towers. add a point and flat out looking pretty cool together. add a point. futuristic looking enough to be digitally added into a future city in a movie (Serenity) add a point. final score- 9. second best dubai has to offer so far.
