YES!!! This is in Paseo de Sta. Rosa right? It is indeed one of the cleanest and most organized wet markets in Pinas. We buy our meat and fish from there when we had our summer vacation in Laguna. :)

I'm guessing that the term "wet market" is used to describe a market that sells fish, poultry, and meat right? And a "dry market" is where they sell fruits, vegetables, and other stuff. Pardon my ignorance for I haven't really experience going to a palengke when I was still living in the Philippines. Most of the groceries we had back then were bought in a supermarket where it's brightly lit, not too crowded, doesn't stink, and is air-conditioned.

Exactly. You're right. Well, almost all towns, municipalities and cities have their own public market. I don't know why Filipinos love to shop in those places. Generally, "palengke" is literally wet and stinky even in the dry section sometimes they don't even separate those two which makes it even more chaotic. I'm actually surprised to see some forumers posting these pictures of shiny and clean markets (yes, in the Philippines they are already glitzy).

Facade-wise the markets are clean (front only). However when you go to the wet part... as in "wet" part where you get the fishes, meats, etc... I swear... very dirty. Don't go there wearing slippers.

But mind you, the one in Paseo de Santa Rosa is really different. Malinis as in malinis talaga, kulang nalang para maging mall eh aircon nalang. The only quality of a traditional market it has though is yung "pera" na malansa.

New Urdaneta Public Market
Urdaneta, Pangasinan

More recent pics of my hometown's market (New Urdaneta City Public Market). Pictures were taken from inside the car. My apologies for that.

It's not as pretty as Dagupan's Malimgas Market but it sure is huge. Building A houses the wet market on the ground floor & parking on the upper floors. Building B houses stalls for various types of business/merchandise such as clothing, newstands, barber shops, dentist clinics, eye clinics, other types of clinics, pet shops, specialty shops, beauty parlors & restaurants. Basically everything other than the wet market. The top floor houses the amusement/gaming center (video games, kiddie rides & bingo). The market also has escalators for accessibility to people especially the elderly & the disabled as well as the lazy people.

This has got to be one of the largest Public City Markets I've ever seen. I thought the Vigan & Laoag City markets were huge but after its completion, those two markets paled in comparison to the size of the Urdaneta Market. A little make over of its exterior would be nice though.

7-Eleven eyes Visayas, Mindanao (http://http://www.bworldonline.com/BW021809/content.php?id=047)

Listed 24-hour convenience store operator Philippine Seven Corp. is considering opening branches in the Visayas and Mindanao, most likely next year.

The operator of the 7-Eleven chain of stores also seeks to open 80 more branches this year as part of efforts to expand its network in Northern and Southern Luzon.

Philippine Seven Comptroller Lawrence de Leon said the 80 new stores would bring 7-Eleven’s store count to 450 by year-end. The company ended 2008 with 370 stores.

Out of the 80 new stores this year, 40 will be company-owned, while the other half will be opened through franchising. "We hope to have a 50-50 mix in company-owned and franchised stores by the end of the year," Mr. de Leon said. At the end of last year, 45% of 7-Eleven stores were company-owned.

Small convenience stores usually sell junk food such as candies, ice cream and soft drinks, as well as wine, lottery tickets, newspapers and magazines, along with a small selection of food and grocery supplies.

Stores that are part of gas stations may also sell motor oil, maps and other transport-related products.

These stores are often located along busy roads, in densely populated urban neighborhoods. Most are open 24 hours, but customers often pay for higher prices in exchange for this convenience.

The company has allotted P240 million for store expansion this year. Mr. de Leon said they would spend P4 million each for the construction and acquisition of equipment of the 40 company-owned stores. They are spending P2 million each for the 40 franchised outlets.

He said much of the budget for store construction would be financed by the company’s own cash.

"We intend to be aggressive in opening stores in major towns and cities outside Metro Manila. We are optimistic about 7-Eleven’s prospects for 2009," Mr. de Leon said.

He said 7-Eleven would also open new outlets in Metro Manila, particularly in high transit areas, and office locations of call centers and business process outsourcing companies.

Philippine Seven operates the largest convenience store network in the country. Last year, it opened 70 new 7-Eleven stores, including the company’s first branches in Zambales and Bataan.

La Union, Baguio, Olongapo, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, Quezon, Cavite and Metro Manila are still open for franchising, it said.

Convenience stores earlier said they remained optimistic about growth even if the slowing global economy had forced a number of companies to reconsider their spending plans for the year.

Philippine Seven Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Victor P. Paterno earlier said convenience stores were not affected by the cyclical factors of a particular industry since demand for food would always be there.

Mr. Paterno said they had noticed an increase in demand for their food service, especially their rice meal and coffee products, particularly in stores located in business districts.

The businessman said some consumers trying to save money have shifted to convenience stores for their fastfood needs.

He also said they were looking at lowering prices to respond to consumers’ needs.

Rival Ministop is looking at opening 85 new stores this year to bring the total to 310. Last year, the company opened 38 new outlets.

Shell Select has also more than doubled its branches to 158 over the past two years. It earlier said it planned to invest around P50 million this year to expand its network, but declined to say by how many. A spokesman said the company was capitalizing on the expanding business process outsourcing industry to grow its business.

The San Miguel Food Shop is a retail outlet that showcases San Miguel food and beverage products to further widen product availability and perk-up consumption.

SMC is looking for owners of about 70 to 100 sq m commercial space in high traffic areas. The owners should be willing to operate or manage the business directly.

Actually, I read in a newspaper, the moment San Miguel decided to take the majority in Petron, San Miguel will convert the Treats convenience stores into san Miguel shops.

‘Sari-sari’ store doubles as money center

Friday, 10 September 2010 00:00

BIZZ FIZZ
BY RENE MARTEL

AN innovative initiative for small and medium enterprises now gives Filipinos the convenience of sending and receiving cash to and from their loved ones using Smart Money at Hapinoy outlets. In a recent agreement between the country’s leading wireless services provider and the Philippines’ first and only sari-sari store chain, Hapinoy stores have now officially become accredited Smart Money Centers.

There are close to 10,000 Hapinoy Stores in operation today, comprised of 75 community stores and thousands of retail outlets strategically located in towns and baranggays of South Luzon, Central Luzon, and Bicol. Selected Hapinoy stores will enable townfolk to load funds into, or withdraw cash from their Smart Money electronic wallets without having to travel long distances to banks or remittance centers.
They may also easily load their Smart and Talk ‘N Text mobile phones at all Hapinoy stores.

“We are happy to expand our current partnership with Hapinoy, to spur entrepreneurial opportunities and economic growth for members of the Base of the Pyramid [BOP],” said Orlando Vea, Smart chief wireless advisor. “By becoming Smart Money Centers, Hapinoy Stores will allow us to give more Filipinos additional ways to improve their livelihood, while at the same time providing easier access to Smart’s cutting-edge products and services, including our award-winning Smart Money platform,” Vea added.

This new collaboration is an enhancement of the partnership sealed in 2007 with Microventures, Inc. (MVI)—the social business enterprise behind Hapinoy. MVI initiated the Hapinoy project in an effort to empower sari-sari stores by linking them directly to partner product manufacturers and microfinance institution (MFI) partners such as CARD. As a result, Hapinoy store owners are able to get higher margins on their sold goods, to save via new efficiency measures, to enjoy merchandising support and product testing from Talk ‘N Text, and to have additional sources of income through the electronic financial services offered by Smart.

Smart Money is the world’s first reloadable electronic wallet linked to a mobile phone. Through Smart Money, account holders may send and receive cash using their cellphones, all at the speed of a text message.

Earlier this month Smart was the only Southeast Asian company to receive the World Business and Development Award from the International Chamber of Commerce, Prince of Whales International Business Leaders Forum, and UN Development Programme. Smart’s programs, including Hapinoy, were cited for servicing the Base of the Pyramid, and for changing the way Filipinos communicate.

“We are excited with this newest development in our Smart partnership. In the same manner that we aimed to give micro-entrepreneurs viable and sustainable business opportunities, we are happy to provide BOP members with easier access to financial services which they otherwise had limited access to. Hand in hand with Smart, we hope to alleviate poverty, one sari-sari store at a time,” said MVI president Bam Aquino.

The Hapinoy Store project serves as a vehicle for opening new sustainable business opportunities for Filipino micro-entrepreneurs. The project also benefits members of the communities being serviced by Hapinoy Stores, as they are given access to goods and services, including Smart and Talk ‘N Text products, at competitive prices.

Hapinoy now joins the ranks of local and international institutions offering Smart’s mobile commerce solutions. A trusted enabler of partners here and abroad, Smart Money has established linkages with the leading banks of the Philippines, the country’s primary ATM consortia, local and international remittance companies, and millions of MasterCard establishments found all over the world and on the worldwide web.

Sta. Ana a ‘green’ model for markets

By Jeannette Andrade

THE STA. ANA Public Market along Pedro Gil Street in Manila is the second in Metro Manila with a wastewater-treatment facility. Muntinlupa set up the first facility in 2004, also in its public market. ANDREW TADALAN

MANILA, Philippines—Faced with the herculean task of cleaning up the Pasig River, nongovernment organizations and government agencies are taking baby steps toward resurrecting the biologically dead waterway.

With waste water making up 60 percent of Pasig River pollutants, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Rotary Club, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the city of Manila linked the waterway cleanup to the pollution source.

The recent launching of the waste-water treatment facility at the Sta. Ana Public Market was “a good start,” Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim told Inquirer during the project’s inauguration held recently near the banks of the river. “It will contribute to cleaning up the Pasig River. We have to start somewhere.”

Deterioration

The Pasig River started deteriorating in the 1930s, when decreased fish migration was noted in the waterway. In 1990, the river was declared biologically dead, with domestic and industrial waste water blamed as the culprit.

Waste water from the marketplaces is described by one of the project proponents to be “very highly polluted and of high strength.” The wastewater-treatment facility is anticipated to address seepage into the Pasig River coming from the Sta. Ana Public Market’s sewage system.

Lisa Lumbao, chief of party of the USAID Philippine Sanitation Alliance (PSA), told the Inquirer that the groups involved in the project were initially focused on the clean-up of the river as a whole, a colossal effort as it involves a 27-kilometer stretch of waterway.

“Wastewater from households was the primary contributor to pollution. But addressing this would call for a big project,” Lumbao explained.

She said that USAID, the Rotary Club and the MMDA settled on one project, the success of which would indicate the feasibility of wastewater management along the banks of the Pasig River.

The Sta. Ana Public Market wastewater-treatment facility is anticipated to be a model of future projects in the city with the marketplace touted to be the cleanest and greenest in the locality in the near future.

Lim said the city could replicate the Sta. Ana project at the Quinta and other public markets situated near the banks of the Pasig.

Cheaper system

USAID-PSA consultant Carlito Santos Jr., an engineer who designed the treatment facility, said the operational cost of maintaining the facility was much cheaper than the conventional system and is easier to manage.

The system uses minimal electricity for the maintenance of one tank with separate chambers and makes use of naturally occurring bacteria to break down pollutants in the waste water.

The treatment is based on sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology and works by utilizing one tank for the separate steps in the wastewater-treatment process; conventional treatment plants require separate tanks. It requires only sparing use of air blowers enhanced with fine bubble diffusers, thus saving on electricity and other costs while being more efficient in transferring oxygen to water.

Santos compared the treatment facility to a huge aquarium with a filtration system.

He explained that the treatment works initially with the separation of solid waste through screening. Filtered wastewater flows through the equalization tank, which balances the flow of the water, then undergoes the anaerobic process where organic pollution is reduced by 50 to 70 percent by microorganisms.

Other uses

The water that comes through the chambers ends up at the sequencing batch reactor where oxygen is introduced. The final stage is disinfection. A small dose of chlorine is mixed with the water before it is discharged into the river.

“The recycled water from the treatment facility could be used for irrigation and for flushing toilets,” Santos said, adding that the public market could save up to 30-40 percent of operational costs.

The Sta. Ana Public Market wastewater-treatment facility is the second of its kind in Metro Manila. The first was set up at the Muntinlupa City Public Market in 2004 where treated wastewater is used for toilet flushing and street washing.

USAID has also introduced the system to Plantation Bay in Cebu and El Nido in Palawan.

Teresita Morante, president of the Sta. Ana Public Market Vendors Association, told the Inquirer that they were looking forward to a cleaner and greener market, with more customers flocking to its spic-and-span stalls.

In the past, it was everyone for himself at the market when it came to disposing waste.

“Now, not only do we have a better system, we can also help in cleaning up the Pasig River in our small way,” Morante said.

SM to convert public markets into malls

BusinessWorld Online
January 9, 2011

SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the country’s largest mall developer, will start commercial operations of seven new malls this year, adding 400,000 square meters (sq. m.) of commercial area for lease.
THE soon-to-be-opened Dasmariñas mall will have a basement for wet market stalls below an SM Hypermarket and food shops.
THE soon-to-be-opened Dasmariñas mall will have a basement for wet market stalls below an SM Hypermarket and food shops.

The mall developer of retail and banking tycoon Henry Sy, Sr. will also pilot test its “public market-to-mall” concept, a partnering with local governments.

This year will see the highest number of new malls opened to the public by the SM group, an executive said late last week.

“We will open seven or eight smaller malls this year,” Jeffrey C. Lim, SM Prime executive vice-president and chief finance officer, told reporters.

The list includes SM Masinag in Antipolo, SM San Fernando in La Union, SM Dasmariñas in Cavite, SM Apalit in Pampanga, SM Commonwealth in Quezon City, SM La Consolacion in Cebu, and SM BF-Sucat in Parañaque.

SM Prime will finance projects through P20 billion in capital allotted this year. The amount has already been secured through debt and internal funding.

“[The Dasmariñas branch] will be a pilot project for us. We are converting a public market into a formal retail mall,” Mr. Lim said.

SM Prime is currently building a mall on a two-hectare lot it had leased from the local government for 25 years.

The lease may be extended for another 25 years.

“We will have a semi-basement for wet and dry markets and the ground floor will be the Hypermarket with some food shops,” Mr. Lim said. The third floor will be for third-party tenants and the fourth floor will be for parking spaces.

Under the agreement, SM Prime cannot increase rental rates for public market tenants beyond the fees approved by the local government.

Mr. Lim said the plan to convert public markets into malls in cooperation with local governments will depend on the success of the pilot test and the availability of lots.

The 30,000-sq.-m. SM Dasmariñas is expected to cost P500 million, half of the benchmark P1 billion for each SM mall.

Meanwhile, some of the new malls like SM Apalit will have 20,000 to 30,000 sq. m. of gross leasable area.

Last year, SM Prime started commercial operations of SM Calamba and San Pablo in Laguna, SM Novaliches in Quezon City and SM Tarlac. This increased SM malls in the Philippines to 40, with an estimated gross floor area of 4.8 million sq. m.

The mall developer has started the construction of SM Davao and the 80,000-sq.-m. SM General Santos in South Cotabato, which will be opened next year.

New malls will help the company hike profits by a double-digit rate this year, Mr. Lim said.

Shares in SM Prime, whose profits rose by 11% to P5.6 billion in the nine months that ended in September last year, dropped by P0.02 to P11.30 each on Friday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

Waterless urinals of the toilet of the public market of Dumaguete, one of the cleanest in the country...

Here's a quote from the Coca Cola President in the Dumaguete Metropost October 23, 2010 issue when he visited the Dumaguete Public Market.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6332/26815896.jpg

An old review about the Dumaguete City Public by a stranger:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQxkRgp6d3I/AAAAAAAABRw/YssbrL3ztZo/S1600-R/DSCF7332_980px3.jpg

A typical impression for a public market is that it is dirty, filthy, and smelly. But many have said that the Dumaguete City Public Market is a cut from the rest as it is one of the cleanest in the country. Take it from a total stranger.

Dumaguete Day Tour: Public Markets
Sunday, November 02, 2008

from: Travel Notes: Philippines (http://philippinetravelnotes.blogspot.com/2008/11/dgtcrk10.html)

I was told by an online acquaintance not to miss the public market. And miss the public market, I did not!

When I got there however, I thought this was not a singular public market but more of a plural public markets. The area is composed of a number of buildings (six?) that comprises the public market of Dumaguete. Yes Daryll, I now agree with you. This must be one of the cleanest in the country. I did not at all experience the usual “yucky” feeling while roaming around this area. This place can even be compared with that of Marikina!

It starts right behind the bell tower with what is called the Fruit Market and fruits they really sell. Yes, the Dauin-bound ‘esrides’ park here. Too many kinds of fruits on sale; from apples to jackfruits, to oranges, guavas, mangoes, durians to peaches, pears and papayas. They’re all there! I loved the smell at this market – interestingly fruity – what else hehe! The delectable scent of the langka dominates the place. And I wondered how they keep or where they throw their garbage in this place – never had a chance to spot any.

Then there is the Fruit & Vegetable Plaza. Name it you’ll find it there. I was surprised to see there was even a stall selling oregano seeds! Whatever those are hehe! Very first thing I noticed in this area is/was that the vegetables are laid out as they are – fresh or not. No manangs who continuously douse their vegetables with water to make them look fresh.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1XH_oVgaI/AAAAAAAABTQ/R_DcJmDXyIg/s1600/DSCF7893.JPG

What actually caught my attention in this area of the market were the numbered coconuts. The style in this place is to mark each “de-husked” coconut with the price for which it is being sold. Hmm, did I say it right? Is there such a word as “de-husked”. Whatever hehe, basta, I mean “with the husk removed”! Am just taking the analogy from “de-boned” and “de-faced” hehehe! And I had to stay a few minutes watching an old man mark each of those coconuts with the big numbers for a price tag! I asked how many marking pens he consumes each day and told me “the equivalent of two”. When I clarified what he meant by “the equivalent of two” he told me that they would usually refill the pen with ink so that it’s cheaper. Hmm, wise!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1Xm9-dmtI/AAAAAAAABTY/TQpQzF5eQVk/s1600/DSCF7888.JPG

Then there is also the Fish Terminal & Storage Complex and I actually did not feel bad being in it. While they trade and sale fish of all types, being there does not give you the yucky feel of trotting on wet, slimy and smelly floor. In fact, it sports the same kind of flooring that most every public market in the country are made of - bare concrete. I could not say this place is sparklingly tidy nor sterile but I think the right word is orderliness - and perhaps too dryness of the surroundings.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1Yg9qcDnI/AAAAAAAABTg/ZKumFapS-Wg/s1600/DSCF7890.JPG

Next buildings are the meats and poultry, fish and other sections selling everything like DVDs, bags, toys, school items, clothes, etc., like you would see them at Divisoria. So it’s a normal public market after all. But why do I (and other observers) like this particular public market? Is it because it’s right behind the church? Nah! I think the clue is discipline and order. Each stall sticks to its allotted space and each vendor has a stall. This is very much unlike anywhere else where the stall owners would eat up the alleys with their wares or extend protrusions so that they can be more visible to the buying public than their competitors. In this place, I did not see vendors spreading their wares on the streets nor did I see ambulant vendors thrusting their goods at people. In this place, the alleyway is still and alleyway, the sidewalk is still a side walk (you know, that place where people walk on? Remember?), the parking areas are still parking areas – and they even have designated spaces for motorcycles and cars! This is probably the secret. Then again, I could have been visiting at the “wrong” time? I hope not!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1ceIRxjNI/AAAAAAAABTo/boPLYs95ELw/s1600/DSCF7891+copy.jpg

Hey, in an inner building of the square that is lined with carinderias on ground floor and what seemed like air-conditioned offices on second level, something caught my curiosity! These are the tarpaulin sheets draped above each carinderia and obviously sponsored/donated by Coke. Each sheet has the logo of coke printed on it with a name at the bottom. I got curious what those names were so I asked one of the stores on the other side of the street. Simple! Those names are the owners of the carinderias. Coolness! In this place, they don’t anymore go to the extremes of creating funny or even silly names like “Kikay’s Kainan” or “Asado ni Mando”! They just sport the FULL NAME (yep, that’s the full first name and full surname of the owner/proprietor of the carinderia)! Unique!

Wow, sweet corn! Love them all - inihaw, mais con hielo, cheese corn, pop corn, and all corny things!
