I couldn't find a thread for this, so here goes.

This just sneaks in to the Highrise forum and 101m, but it's a huge building for Sheffield where the tallest has been the 70m Arts Tower for the last 50 years. The building is residential with retail on the ground floor, and is part of a larger development containing offices, retail, residential units, a car parking and a 4* hotel. Construction has now started and we're looking forward to seeing thins rise. It is in competition to be Sheffields tallest with another tower, rumour to be up to 36 stories (Currently at 4 stories high, but with no planning permission ).

And to prove it's u/c:
here we go, they might be building a raft foundation if there is rock near the surface.

Very nice for Sheffield! :)

Nice to see another UK North City in the world forums! :)

How the hell has it started with no planing permit?

Good Luck!

Its not City Lofts above that doesn't have planning permission, its another one.

The first 100m+ for Sheffield?

roneys_today
May 24th, 2007, 07:30 PM
sure is.

not only is it much taller than anything else in the area, it's also sitting on top of a pretty big hill so skyline domination is guaranteed!

rhinomatt, this one has palnning permission. it's another tower which has started without. the situation is odd though because they're currently building an older scheme (which fell through but did have permission) with hopes of extending upwards with modified planning permission....i think!

Cool... do you know the AOD (Above Ordnance Datum) height?

paulmat
May 24th, 2007, 08:45 PM
It's 177.2m AOD.

And yeah, sorry if I didn't make that clear. It's another tower which doesn't have PP, but is now up to 4 stories. It's meant to be about the same height as this one, so we'll have to see which get's there first ;)

It's clearly that this building is of more importance for Sheffields skyline than another 200+ or 300+ is for Dubai.

Yeah Cheers for the comments guys. :) I was thinking we were gonna get a bit of a slaughtering on here.

I agree with you ZZ-II, it's not anything groundbreaking in design, but it's good and conservative (should hopefully age well), and probably a good start for Sheffield on the 100m+ ladder.

this is a development recently completed by the same company in salford manchester:

this is high class living for the uks standards, bear in mind we dont have many high rise buildings so there is nothing common about them.

A construction update. They really are cracking on with that rebar.

Couldn't resist having a look over at the City Lofts site today, the amount of rebar laid down so far is huge, the crane base looks very promising too, should be BIG ONE!

Looks good. Clearly many British cities are having major construction plans going on. I've noticed the sort in Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Belfast and Newcastle. Nice pictures.

I like this building, it is sleek and modern and without any superfluous ornamentation; yet it could have been a wee bit more original, as we say here in the States, "edgy." A slight curvature to the design, perhaps? Still I'm happy for Sheffield getting a major skyscraper like this - I visited Sheffield once about 4 years ago because I have dear friends who live in the nearby village of Barnsley. By the way, the Yorkshire countryside just outside Sheffield is extremely lovely, the area has a lot charm and the beautiful rural landscapes typify "England's green and pleasant land."

well we all would have liked a slightly more 'adventurous' design but this is our very first highrise and the council didnt want to scare the public with an outrageous design. people are very touchy in this city when it comes to groundbreaking developments, a lot of people would like it to stay a heritage city. luckily many people are supporting the redevelopment of the city and sheffield is seeing the biggest building boom its ever had. we are all very proud of it :)

August 8th, 2007, 05:26 AM
Yes, I can understand why the City Council would not want a building with too radical a design. Remember, buildings should have some sort of architectural harmony with the surrounding buildings. I don't mean to say they have to mimic the nearby buildings, but they should not stick out as an eyesore, either.
I made mention of dear friends from Barnesley, well - they are coming to visit me here in Philadelphia next month! What could I possible show them ... Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, the Liberty Bell???? These things are meaningless unless you're American. Anyway, even the green rolling hills of our countryside and the quaint villages like New Hope and Doylestown - pretty as they are - aren't as lovely as Yorkshire. Maybe we'll head out to the Jersey shore and check out the casinos in Atlantic City

someone has said that once before. it doesnt look like a UK commie block therefore i cant agree with you.

after all the UK doesnt really have any commieblocks, it just has the occasional block of flats that look like this:

I'm sorry but progress is so slow on this. You compare it to the rate of progress on Velocity Tower, where they seem to be banging out a new floor every week, and the difference is ridiculous. It's so frustrating.

This is starting to go now. This site looks amazing - there's 5 cranes between the tower, car park and the other St. Paul's Place buildings - a proper forest!

Probably because it's slightly up a hill Andy. Something people have praised Sheffield council for (in contrast to places like Leeds and Birmingham).

no its not praise exactly but the location of the tower is important because it is supposed to be a landmark so that visitors coming out of the station can see which direction the city centre is, because funnily enough people do get confused. its sort of a centrepoint marker

What a great design. A real score for Sheffield.

I once spent 10 minutes in Sheffield as I changed bus there. All I really saw was a large shopping centre, and some cooling towers. I remember that everyone there was really nice though. I'm glad this is going up, Sheffield deserves great design.

We have been having some problems with the cladding. due to City Lofts going bust in the credit crunch, costs had to be cut. The cladding was the victim and has been complained about due to it cheap look. Cladding has been stopped for now until the council decides if they want it to continue as it is.

I am hoping to see this building in July, as I was invited to a wedding in nearby Barnsley, South Yorkshire ... Sheffield is the closest city of any size. Nice tower, clean, modern, no superfluous ornamentation.

Yeah, I have to think you wouldn't necessarily want anything too modern-- it would maybe be jarring in the context of Sheffield. The design is a little dated but it's still just right. Steady on then.

Great pics as always, Kyle.

I really like it now they've sorted the cladding out. Plenty of glass, like a tall building should have, and nice sharp lines. It goes to show that a building doesn't need to be complex or gimmicky to look appealing. That flat surface really does seem monumental by Sheffield standards.
