I did this last year, too lazy to do it this year cause the NY Metro covers 4 states...anywho, THE REASON WHY THERE ARE WEIRD RANKINGS IS BECAUSE GE IS THE BIGGEST COMPANY IN CT, CITIGROUP IS THE BIGGEST COMPANY IN NY AND JOHNSON & JOHNSON IS THE BIGGEST COMPANY IN NJ.

Irwell May 24th, 2007, 08:51 PM The UK is in a strange situation. Many companies have their registered offices in London, despite not actually being run from there. If by headquarters you mean the office that the decisions are made in, rather than the registered office, Manchester has two:
GUS
AstraZeneca
Xelebes May 25th, 2007, 04:35 AM Katz Group (Pharmaceutical - runs several chains of drug stores, including Rexall)
Poole Construction Limited (PCL) (Canada's largest construction company)
Canadian Western Bank
KennyDE302 May 25th, 2007, 06:23 AM i guess Wilmington, Delaware does alright for a mid-size city
Delaware is the Preferred Gateway
The state of Delaware provides a unique and favored gateway to the U.S. marketplace. More than 500,000 corporations, limited liability companies, statutory trusts, and partnerships have been formed in Delaware. That number, however, is only part of the story. Delaware is the corporate home state for many of the largest, most successful and best-known U.S. companies. Nearly 60% of the Fortune 500 companies are organized under Delaware law. Delaware corporations also constitute more than 50% of all U.S. publicly-traded companies.
mhays May 25th, 2007, 09:10 AM Greater Downtown Seattle is headquarters of Washington Mutual, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Expeditors, Safeco (moving in), Amazon....
Suburban Seattle/Tacoma headquarters include Microsoft, Costco, PACCAR (Kenworth & Peterbilt), Weyerhaeuser...all $10b+ if I recall. Plus smaller firms like Symetra, Eddie Bauer...
Downtown Tacoma has Russell, which includes some of the major stock indexes.
Can't count Boeing anymore, but the Commercial Airplane Group is based here, and the biggest local private employer with something like 60,000 staff.
Fallout May 25th, 2007, 01:10 PM What's the use of such a post where the thread asks tol list companies?

Well, I wanted to point him that he asks in international forums about things that only concern american cities.
although no polish company makes to Fortune's Global 500, there are 4 in forbes Global 2000:
679 PKN Orlen Poland Oil & Gas Operations Plock
704 PKO Bank Polski Poland Banking Warsaw
1170 Pgnig-Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe Poland Oil & Gas Operations Warsaw
1406 KGHM Polska Miedz Poland Materials Lubin
Interestingly two of them are HQed in rather small cities, while other two are from Warsaw.
Nouvellecosse May 25th, 2007, 01:36 PM 1 Tokyo Japan 52

So Atlanta and Houston are tied as the second global 500 cities in the US? Seems strange that they would have more than even LA, Chicago, SF, etc. I would assume that those places would have more in their greater metros, and although Houston has a huge city limits Atlanta is fairly decentralised isn't it?
tayser May 25th, 2007, 04:29 PM 8 Fortune 500 in AU (2006 list, Coles Myer not likely to still be there in 2007 as it's gone through a demerger):

Metropolitan May 25th, 2007, 05:21 PM According to the Fortune Global 500 (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2006/countries/F.html), 36 out of the 38 French companies are located in the Paris area.
There are 27 only if you consider La Défense as not being Paris...
Sexas May 25th, 2007, 05:45 PM Well Houston won't be the second HQ city for long Halliburton moving out!! (YEAAAAA! let's party.) Xusein May 26th, 2007, 04:29 AM In the Hartford area, unsuprisingly, most are in the Insurance Industry.
About 4 are in the Hartford city limits, including one in the top 50.
United Technologies (42)
Hartford Financial Services (82)
Aetna (85)
Northeast Utilities (337)
Stanley Works (521)
Chemtura (555)
Silgan Holdings (703)
Phoenix (726)
Magellan Health Svcs (949)
Connecticut has 11 overall, with General Electric (in the NY suburbs) being the 6th largest corporation in the US.
isaidso May 26th, 2007, 04:41 AM Very few, corporate Canada is in the process of being bought up and shipped off to other countries. Here is what's left in Toronto:
1. ManuLife (Insurance)
2. George Weston (Retailing: Loblaws, Holts, Selfridges)
3. Royal Bank (Banking)
4. Magna (Auto Industry)
5. Sun Life (Insurance)
6. CIBC (Banking)
7. Toronto-Dominion Bank (Banking)
8. ScotiaBank (Banking)
9. Onex (Conglomerate)
As you can see pretty much financial services is all that has survived.
djrules5454 May 26th, 2007, 06:53 AM In the Twin Cities (Minneapolis - Saint Paul) Metro, there are a few (taken from 2006 Global 500 list):

The Puget Sound Business Journal's list of top public companies came out this week. It was remarkable how much our companies are growing. Amazon became our 6th $10 billion revenue company. Nordstrom and Starbucks are expanding quickly and should both top that figure soon.
We're not a huge headquarters city. But two other cities I sort of follow, Portland and Denver, only have one $10b company each in their entire metros.
PS, all of these companies are in King County, pop 1.8 million, representing the central half of our CSA. Only Issaquah is anywhere near the "edge" of town. No leapfrogging corporate development. Cool.
Nat76 May 28th, 2007, 02:33 AM Here's a global 500 list for Chicago:
Boeing
Sears
Walgreen
Motorola
Abbott
McDonald's
Sara Lee
United Airlines
Exelon
Chicago doesn't appear on the top 10 cities list because many of the headquarters moved to suburbs. If you look at metro, Chicago trails: New York, Tokyo, Paris, Beijing, and Seoul. It would be tied with Toronto.
isaidso May 28th, 2007, 07:34 AM Katz Group (Pharmaceutical - runs several chains of drug stores, including Rexall)
Poole Construction Limited (PCL) (Canada's largest construction company)
Canadian Western Bank
Those aren't Global 500, they are Canadian 500. There are zero Global 500 headquartered in Edmonton.
Nat76: if you include suburbs, Chicago surpasses Toronto. There are more Global 500 firms based in 'Chicagoland'. The Greater Toronto Area increases from 8 to 9 firms. This list is more indicative of where the world's businesses are based, and thus, the business power, clout, prestige, lucrative jobs, wealth, etc.
1. Tokyo
2. New York
3. Paris
4. London
5. Beijing
6. Chicago
7. Seoul
8. Toronto
9. Madrid
Once you include medium sized businesses, the gap widens further. Walk around the CBD of both cities and you'll notice the difference right away.
