TACLOBAN CITY -- City Mayor Alfred Romualdez will lead the lighting today, December 8, of the giant Christmas tree at the Balyuan Park, this city.

This was disclosed by City Councilor Cristina Gonzales- Romualdez, who said that lighting of the 50-foot structure would signal the start of the long Christmas celebration in the City of Tacloban.

“After a countdown, the mayor, joined by other city officials, will push a switch that will light-up the tree,” she revealed.

Members of the city council, department heads, and employees of the city government are also expected to grace the occasion.

The lighting of the Christmas tree, which has become an annual tradition, is also expected to be witnessed by hundreds of Taclobanons.

“Just like in the past, we are expecting hundreds of individuals from all walks of life to witness the occasion,” said Romualdez, adding that the Christmas tree, which is covered by multi-colored “parols,” will serve as an added attraction in the city.

It was learned that the intricate design of the Christmas tree was done by David Cerezo, a rubber artist from Marikina City who was contracted by the city government here to do the over-all set-up of the Christmas decorations in the city. (CIO- RODRIGUEZ T. SENASE)

hope someday meron na ring flights direct to tacloban from iloilo para mas convenient... medyo malayo kasi if mag via cebu pa and if you travel by sea via ormoc and travel by land, mas matagal..

btw, are there any plans to improve the port of tacloban? i heard na hindi daw talaga pwedeng magdock ang mga ships diyan but i wonder kung bakit coz nung time na dumaan kami there were even cargo ships berthed there..

speaking of port...i think pwede naman mag dock sa port of tacloban ang barko regardless sa tonelada or laki,.wag lang aircraft carrier:lol::lol:ang problema lang siguro yung pagpasok at pag navigate sa San Juanico Strait,.

Yes thats true, San Juanico Strait is one of the narrowest strait in the world to navigate. Mahìhirapan ang malalaki at mahahabang barko kagaya ng mga Super Ferry 9 o mga Negros Navigation. Bukod sa limit ng vertical clearance ng San Juanico Bridge na puedeng dumaan sa ilalim may limit din ang kahaba ng barko puedeng makapasok sa Tacloban port. Cargo ships nakakapasok naman sa port ng Tacloban even passenger ships nga ng Sulpicio and WG&A may biyahe pa naman. Yun nga lang mga maliliit ang barko.
There is a plan to transfer our port to the northern part of the City just ahead of San Juanico Bridge. But it didn't materliaze, sooner or later in the future the Romualdezes here have plans to reactivate that place. Hope by that time things will be beneficial to us. By the way, just near to the existing port of Tacloban there is an on-going proposal by FPDA to construct a Tacloban Fish Port Complex. Plans are already there, but relocation of households near the area is big issue though the City government want to push this project or else FPDA will have its option to build it somewhere in Eastern Samar. Sana matoloy ito.

Due to its proximity and location to Cebu and the Visayan Seas that makes City of Ormoc and Municipalities of Baybay and Hilongos the other gateways of Leyte Province. Here in Tacloban, there are also ships but limited due to navigational problems. Lantsa, pamboat, ngan balsa kadamo-damoan didi kay ada man ha Tacloban it bagsakan hit mga produkto ngan pampasahero it iiba nga mga lugar ha Samar na mga isla-isla.

from what i saw sa pics, tacloban is really blessed to have a beautiful mall that is robinsons. it looks very modern and neat, not the typical robinsons mall you see in other places that is cluttered (especially galleria) and cramped.

kung crowd ang babasehan buhay na buhay pa ang dalawang Gaisanos :)

LWUA starts mapping out to augment water supply

TACLOBAN CITY - The Local Water Utilities Authority (LWUA) has started to map out measures to augment water supply in this city.

Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia Nierras said that the team recently conducted an assessment in Malirong River in Palo, Leyte as the new source of potable water.

The move is in response to the instruction of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to look into the water supply shortage in the city after she heard the complaint during her visit to the province in time for the Leyte Landing celebrations.

“The team from LWUA is ready to present the proposal next week. They will discuss with the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) about investment required, cost sharing, and technical aspects of the project,” Nierras told Leyte Samar Daily Express.

Bidding is expected to follow after the two parties will agree on some conditions in the implementation of the development initiative.

As planned, the filtration plant will be placed in the state-run Government Center in Palo to save money.

“This is more doable project and requires less investment,” Nierras said.

It can be recalled that after Arroyo’s visit to the province, he ordered LWUA Chairman Prospero Pichay to coordinate with the LMWD to improve the services here.

“She asked for additional information from me about the issue. She called up the LWUA administrator and instructed him to find ways to help the water district,” Nierras said.

In previous interviews, LMWD General Manager Nestor Villasin claimed that the number of concessionaires served is more than the 12,000 household capacities that the three water sources of LMWD could provide.

Based on last year’s computation, Tacloban, which accounts 70% of the water delivery, has been experiencing 25% deficiency.

Villasin said that they would balance the number of disconnections and new connections to ensure efficient water deliveries. To address the problem, the water district has been conducting deep excavations to find and repair pipe leakages.

Approximately 30,000 cubic meter of potable water is delivered to the LMWD service area every day with the main bulk of supply coming from the Rapid Filtration Plant located within the boundary of Tingib, Pastrana, Leyte and Brgy. Hibunawon, Jaro, Leyte .

Another source is the water sedimentation plant coming from Hiabangan and Hitugnob rivers in Dagami town.

LMWD, which is the sole provider of water in the city, is a government-owned and controlled corporation. (SARWELL Q. MENIANO)

Mayor Romualdez leads lighting of giant Christmas tree

TACLOBAN CITY- City Mayor Alfred Romualdez led on Wednesday, Dec. 9, the lighting of the Giant Christmas tree at the Balyuan Park, this City.

After a countdown, Mayor Romualdez joined by other city officials and dignitaries pushed a switch that lighted up the 50-foot structure.

Also present during the ceremonial lighting were former City Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez, Councilor Cristina Gonzales- Romualdez, City Administrator Roberto Muñoz, City Information Office (CIO) head Evelyn Cordero, City Assessor Carlos Cordero, City Personnel Officer Pinky Brosas, City Planning Officer Roland Hidalgo, and City Nutrition Officer Malou Tabao.

The lighting was also witnessed by city government employees and scores of other Taclobanons from all walks of life.

Mayor Romualdez stressed in his message that he was very happy with the occasion and said that the Christmas tree will serve as an added attraction in the city.

“Families can go here to enjoy the evening and watch this beautiful Christmas tree, said Romualdez, adding that the lighting also means the start of the long Christmas celebration in the City of Tacloban.

Made out of rubber materials, the intricate design of the Christmas tree was done by David Cerezo, a rubber artist from Marikina City who was contracted by the city government here to do the over-all set-up of the Christmas decorations in the city.

The lighting of the Christmas tree, which has become an annual tradition here, was originally scheduled to be held Tuesday evening but was moved to the next day due to bad weather conditions. (CIO- JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEÑASE)

Only people has option to shop and dine and even "a tambayan"....

like most cities ganyan din po ang nangyari especially with the entry of SM.. Gaisano Capital and the other small cinema operators will suffer the most.
Also expect those old cinemas to be totally wiped out soon and be converted to either tiangge or "unitop" like stores, basta parang ganyan talaga ang pattern.

Medyo pabaya din kasi ang Gaisano Capital group when it comes to managing their malls, they don't foresee the competition ahead of them. don't know lang with the other gaisano in your area, mas maganda kasi mag manage yung Shogun and Metro group.

with the entry of rob, expect SM to sprout anytime soon in tacloban. and with a robinsons that big, i dont think it will just be a Supercenter as planned before. :banana:

This church is originally constructed in 1596 by the Jesuits and later taken over by Augustinians and Franciscans. The two towers were built in the mid 1800s. Celebrating the first I love Tacloban day

Let every December 18 of every year, also the anniversary of Tacloban being recognized as a Highly Urbanized City (HUC) be known as “I love Tacloban day”. It would be good for everyone to forget oneself and be able to focus on his fellow Taclobanon who needs his love, attention and service; a day to enjoy and savor the feeling of satisfaction of being able to share and give a part of oneself.

Various activities have been lined up that will make the day special for everyone. At 5:30 am, a taebo jam has been scheduled for all fitness buffs at the astrodome. It is followed by a thanksgiving mass at the Sto. Niño church that will be concelebrated by all the 13 parish priests in the city. Everyone is enjoined to go out; participate and offer in the mass. After the mass, the agri-trade-service fair will be formally opened and the motorcade around the city will commence. The city mayor will lead the city officials, academe, banking & government sector, civic organizations, religious groups, business establishments and village officials. It will be followed by the launching of the citizens charter, recognition of the 40 top taxpayers and the awarding of Barangay Mahusay during a program at the Balyuan Convention Center.

In the afternoon, the business establishments, academe, civic organizations, city employees and some generous individuals will participate in the gift-giving activity at the Balyuan Amphitheater. Young and old Taclobanons are encouraged to join by bringing a gift to be given to an indigent family or child. City Hall officials were also encouraged to participate at their own volition. At night, a street jam/dancing is organized at the Magsaysay Boulevard led by the youth. Everyone is again encouraged to come out and enjoy. Local bands were invited to join in the fun and festivity.

The I love Tacloban day is a movement to elicit love for the city; a day that all Taclobanons will share something for his fellowman and is based on the belief that no man is too poor not to be able to give or share. Every December 18, everyone is enjoined to share his time, talent or wealth to some indigent family or child. No matter how poor a family is, it will still have something to share to an even poorer member of society or neighbor; be it extra clothing, food or any thing the family does not need. It is simply a day that we set aside to serve, think or focus on others; a day to manifest --- love, support and gratitude in action, for Tacloban and Taclobanons.
