Tacloban City Astrodome to be upgraded next year

TACLOBAN CITY - The Tacloban City Convention Center (TCCC), popularly known as the Tacloban City Astrodome, will be upgraded next year.

This was bared by City Building Officer Danny Fuentebella in a recent interview.

Fuentebella stressed that the upgrading of the Astrodome is part of the plan of the city government to convert the astrodome into a sports complex

“It is not only the city hospital that will be upgraded and improved, but also the astrodome,” he pointed out.

The city building officer disclosed that the upgrade of the said facility will involve the putting up of a soccer field, beach volleyball, basketball, and volleyball courts on the grounds of the astrodome complex; and the extension of the concrete sidewalk.

“The dream of sports complex will become a reality once the upgrade will be finished,” Fuentebella said.

Aside from that, according to Fuentebella, the city government will also install a ramp and an elevator inside the facility.

“Those will facilitate the entry and exit of disabled persons,” he emphasized.

Fuentebella revealed that the upgrade of the astrodome is one of the priorities of the administration of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez for next year, and that the city government will allocate P10 million for the project.

“The upgrade will begin early next year. Hopefully, before the end of 2010 it will be finished,” he said.

In a separate interview, City Sports Director Joel Bugho welcomed the impending upgrade of the Tacloban City Astrodome.

“That’s a very good development. That will help a lot as we aim to become the sports capital of Eastern Visayas,” Bugho said.

Built during the administration of former Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez at a cost of more than P300 million, the TCCC is the biggest and most modern astrodome and convention center in the entire Eastern Visayas region. Presently, the astrodome serves as a venue of a variety of local, regional and national events. (CIO-JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE)

NIA to build P1.1B reservoir project in Villaba, Leyte (http://leytesamardaily.com)

TACLOBAN CITY - The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will build up next year a P1.1 billion Reservoir Irrigation Project in Villaba, Leyte, the first of its kind in the province designed to mitigate the impact of climate change.

NIA Regional Manager Romeo G. Quiza said that the facilities will irrigate rice farms in the towns of Villaba, Matag-ob and Matalom, known as rice producing areas in Leyte .

Quiza said the Hibulangan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project will irrigate 3,000 hectares of agricultural land during wet and dry season.

“Because of climate change, we expect prolonged dry spell or longer rainy days. We need storage dam to store water during wet season and release it during dry season,” he explained.

Last week, the Regional Development Council has approved the project to be implemented early next year.

The project requires the construction of 35.5 meters high zoned earth dam with storage capacity of about 10.8 million cubic meters of water.

“This will be the first earth filled storage dam to be constructed in Leyte, ” Quiza said.

The reservoir will be located in Barangay Sulpa, Villaba, Leyte . A network of irrigation canals would convey irrigation water to the farmlands located in Barangays Hibulangan, Bugabuga, Tumamak, Sta. Cruz, and Capinahan all in the municipality of Villaba .

Service roads will be constructed on the bank of the canal.

“Also, the project envisions to provide the community an opportunity to engage in inland fish production within the reservoir area. This project will boost the socio-economic status of farmer-beneficiaries in the area,” Quiza explained.

The dam is scheduled for completion after two to three years depending on the availability of funding from the national government.

It is among the eight identified projects under the Small Irrigation Reservoir Irrigation Projects (SRIPs) selected among the 28 proposed SRIPs endorsed to the NEDA for inclusion in the list of pipeline projects for financial assistance under the Japan Bank for International Cooperation 25th Yen Loan Package of the Japanese government.

The project was one of the four priority irrigation projects considered in the Regional Development Plan 2004-2010 as vital in the economic development in the region. Other priority irrigation projects are Catarman-Bobon in Northern Samar, Dolores in Eastern Samar, and Basey in Samar .

Leyte accounts about two thirds of the total annual rice production in the region with its 4,500 hectares farm supplied with water, the highest irrigation coverage.

Eastern Visayas has a total rice area of 160,000 hectares, in which 57,000 hectares are supported with irrigation system. The three Samar provinces posted the smallest area backed irrigation system. (SARWELL Q. MENIANO)

Brgy. 88 garnered the highest point total among the 138 barangays in this city to win the inter-barangay cleanliness and beautification contest.

For topping the contest, Brgy. 88 won a Certificate of Recognition and P10, 000 cash prize from the organizers, which was received by Chairman William Placa in behalf of the barangay during the awarding ceremony held at the Balyuan Convention Center on Friday.

“The sacrifice and cooperation of the different sectors, barangay officials, and residents had bear fruits,” an elated Placa stressed.

Brgy. 110 (Utap) bagged the second spot to win P5,000 cash prize, while Brgy. 74 (Lower Nulatula) won the third place and P3, 000 cash prize.

The next five places in the rankings, Barangays 73 (PHHC-Mountainside), 14, 83-C (Taguictic), 62-A (Calanipawan), and 109 (V & G), each received P2,000 consolation prize from the organizers.

Launched by City Councilor Cristina Gonzalez- Romualdez last May 2009, the search was meant to encourage people in the barangays to beautify and clean their places and surroundings.

A team from the office of Councilor Romualdez visited and conducted on-the-spot inspection to assess the cleanliness and beautification programs of the different barangays.

TACLOBAN CITY- Schoolchildren in depressed areas in this city have no reason to frown this Christmas as the Tacloban Schools Division of the Department of Education (DepEd) handed them some gifts last Friday as part of the agency’s “Tuloy ang Pasko Program.”

Schools Division Superintendent Ronelo Al Firmo, who led the gift-giving activity, told Leyte Samar Daily Express that around 500 underprivileged students have benefited from this undertaking.

Firmo disclosed that the cost of this program reached P40,000 in all, a funding that came from the proceeds of the dance competitions conducted during the DepEd Day last December 11 held at the Tacloban Convention Center under the hosting of District Learning Center (DLC-6).

He said the “pa kuracha” or dance competitions during the DepEd Day generated about P80,000 wherein half of it or 50 percent went directly to the city division purportedly for this gift-giving activity.

Most of the recepients were from the northern barangays of this city where poverty situation is present and is affecting many schoolchildren.

“It’s so pitiful to think that some students there could hardly even have a pair of slippers which is very necessary especially in going to school,” Firmo said.

He said this is the first time in history that the city schools division conducted such an activity.

Express learned that each student was given a budget of P80 only to accommodate the 500 schoolchildren with the P40,000 allocation.

“The recepients who are all students have been pre-identified and validated. We made sure they are the most underprivileged students we have in the division. We want to somehow make them smile this Christmas,” Firmo said.

The gifts given to the kids contain a pair of slippers, notebooks, ballpen, pencil, crayons, or a complete set of school supplies.

The beneficiaries include the students in the elementary or primary schools in Tagpuro for DLC-1, Utap for DLC-2, Sta. Elena for DLC-3, Merciville for DLC-4, Old Kawayan for DLC-5, and Sto. Niño for DLC-6.

Firmo said it’s heartwarming to note that, in one small way, the DepEd family in Tacloban was able to extend help to the underprivileged kids and somehow painted a smile on their faces this Christmas. (LEMUEL PAGLIAWAN)

Yes that's true. They are planning to add more facilities inside the park yung para sa IT and BPO locators and they are also planning to put up a Convention Center. :banana:

Let's not expect na January talaga ang start ng construction ng hotel, BPO, at ang annex ng mall.
