Ormoc City Schools Sports Organization (OCSSO) was again successful on the recent concluded 2nd conference inter-school basketball championship league of 2009-2010 season.

With the absence of closest rival Western Leyte College Mustangs, the AMA-Computer Learning Center Titans made its way to the finals easy. The size factor of Titans made every opponent hard to drive into the basket. But the EVSU Tigers refused to concede their battle. They forced to have game 3 of the best of 3 series finals. Titans clobbered game 1 but Tigers made successive bull’s eye on 3-point area that demoralized the Titans in the final period on game 2 to tie the series. On the do or die game 3 of the series was a close game. Tigers kept close at a striking distance to the Titans on the first half. Less than 2 minutes of the 3rd period, Titans pulled away that Tigers were not able to hit their target until the buzzer sounded game over. ACLC regains the championship trophy.

ORMOC CITY—Geothermal leader Energy Development Corp. (EDC) inaugurated last Feb. 25 its new state-of-the-art rig called Rig 14, touted as the most modern in the Philippines and probably in Asia. Rig 14 is now operational in Tongonan, this city.

The event is significant considering the last time EDC acquired a rig was in 1983. Imported from Texas, USA, for nearly P1 billion, the rig includes heavy equipment vehicles. The rig is numbered 14 as it is EDC’s 14th unit. The company actually has only 10 operational rigs as the other units have already been decommissioned.

The new rig has two unique features: the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and Amphion Integrated Rig Control System.

The VFD allows for a more accurate speed and torque control, while the Amphion centralizes control of various rig equipment into a two-joystick, four-touch-screen monitor-equipped command chair. The operator feels like he is operating a video-game console. All rig-floor equipment is controlled from this chair inside an air-conditioned driller’s cabin.

In addition, the new rig’s mud system has a 1,800-barrel capacity, or about twice that of other rigs, which can increase the rate of penetration.

The company touts Rig 14 as having superior safety and mobility features like the iron roughneck articulated hydraulic tool, which improves safety by eliminating human hands from the makeup and breakout of pipes, considered as the most dangerous part of rig-floor operations.

While old rigs use cranes to feed drill pipes to the rig floor, Rig 14 utilizes the automatic catwalk pipe-cat machine, a hydraulic device. The standard pipe-cat is a one-piece, 60-foot-long unit, while the unit supplied to EDC is a transport-friendly bespoke two-piece rig of 40-foot and 20-foot parts pinned together for operations.

Rig 14 has draw works on the ground that eliminates heavy substructure support beams and allowing a more spacious rig-floor work area.

“With this new state-of-the-art rig, we will achieve significant operational efficiency by reducing our drilling days by 40 percent to 50 percent,” EDC president and chief operating officer Richard Tantoco said.

“We target 60 drilling days with Rig 14. Soon, this will shrink to 50 and ultimately 30. That last figure corresponds to roughly 100-meters-per-day average rate of penetration. Each day shorter saves the company about $40,000, including the cost of third-party contractors,” he said.

Tantoco added, “The rig’s superior safety and mobility features will also enable us to accomplish our drilling targets in terms of programmed wells per year, which is crucial as we are in an expansionary mode.”

EDC plans to drill 23 new wells this year, 14 of which are within the Leyte Geothermal Production Field.

With each well having a potential capacity of 5 to 7 megaWatts (mW), the 23 new wells translate to at least 115 mW of additional power that will avert an impending energy crisis, Tantoco said.

For the next two-and-a-half years, EDC is programming to produce 120 mW more at a cost of $420 million.

Tantoco said that while a geothermal power plant is more expensive to build at $3.4 million/ per mW, free steam supply is assured for life compared with a coal-fired plant, which is built for only $2 million per mW, but which will continually require a supply of coal.

“We continue to invest in drilling equipment and manpower because they form the backbone of our geothermal business. The new rig is a valuable addition to our assets and will enable us to meet our drilling targets especially here in Leyte, which is a vital energy project,” Tantoco said.

Energy Dev't Corp tests newest, most modern rig in Leyte

Tacloban City (March 6) -- The Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a geothermal energy leader, inaugurated on February 25, its state-of-the-art rig, touted as the most modern in the country.

"With this new state-of-the-art rig, we will achieve significant operational efficiency by reducing our drilling days by 40 to 50%," EDC President and COO Richard Tantoco said.

The rig's superior safety and mobility features will also enable EDC to accomplish its drilling targets in terms of programmed wells per year, which is crucial since the corporation is in an expansionary mode, the EDC President added.

The new rig, Mr. Dave Devilles, the corporate communications officer said, has two unique features - the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and Amphion Integrated Rig Control System. The former allows for a more accurate speed and torque control while the latter centralizes control of various rig equipment.

In addition, its mud system has a 1,800 barrels capacity which can increase rate of penetration. The new rig also has superior safety and mobility features.

"We continue to invest in drilling equipment and manpower because they form the backbone of our geothermal business, President Tantoco explained. The new rig is a valuable addition to EDC assets and will enable the company to meet its drilling targets especially in Leyte which is a vital energy project.

The Leyte Geothermal Production Field (LGPF) is EDC's biggest project. With an installed capacity of 701 megawatts, it is the virtual linchpin to the national electric highway supplying power to Luzon and to Central and Western Visayas.

EDC owns and operates not only the geothermal fields but also the power plants that include Tongonan 1, Upper Mahiao, Malitbog, and Mahanagdong. (PIA 8)

Zero Potholes Program implemented

PALO, Leyte — The “Operation Zero Potholes” program of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Eastern Visayas is now in full swing, according to DPWH 8 Regional Director Angelito Twaño told reporters in an interview at his office here. Twaño said his office has a P50-million budget for Eastern Visayas for said program. He said the program basically involves maintaining roads and highways in Eastern Visayas. "It is my office’s policy that when favorable conditions are in place, or immediately after the rainy months usually from September to January, I want my men to simultaneously implement the program all over the region,” said Twaño. He explained that the rehabilitation work on roads and highways in the region in Eastern Samar had been delayed due to the delayed budget releases and the prolonged rain in the region last year. However, he said he is now giving assurances to the public that with the current favorable weather conditions and the availability of funds for road maintenance, rehabilitation of roads and highways in the region will now be in full swing. Leyte guv assures rice farmers province ready against El Niño effects

TACLOBAN CITY – Even as their farmlands remain unaffected by the El Niño phenomenon, farmer in Julita, Leyte has already requested for water pumps for their rice fields as mitigation measure and to brace for the long dry spell this year.

In a meeting with Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, farmers from Brgy. Dita, Julita, Leyte expressed alarm over the longer dry days over the past weeks would affect their production during this cropping season.

However, Gov. Petilla said he is confident that Leyte’s irrigation system can well sustain the effects of El Niño and still provide adequate yield for rice farmers in the province.

According to the Department of Agriculture, Leyte is more or less 97% irrigated and has other water sources that can be tapped to bring water to the rice fields.

The governor assured the rice farmers that the provincial government can provide for the necessary equipment to supply the needed amount of water for rice fields not to dry out.

The province through the Provincial Agriculturist Office has already readied mitigation plans to aid farmers in bracing against El Niño.

Gov. Petilla otherwise informed the farmers that aside from the El Nino, the agriculture sector has also to contend with the changing climate, effect of which is already being felt all over the world.

He said that the expected long dry season is part of the effects of climate change that there is a need to adapt to the new environmental condition.

It was learned that through the agriculture department varieties of rice have been developed in such a way that they could adapt to different kinds of climate condition

Earlier, the DA-8e urged farmers to be prepared for the worst as some 14 provinces have been adversely affected by the El Niño phenomenon.

Although the region as a whole is considered to be moderately affected, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warns farmers that El Niño is a real occurrence expected to last until the month of July and that serious mitigation measures must be implemented.

The cebu to tacloban flights were stopped for a few years I think so I had no choice but to take the long bus ride from Ormoc, anyway I also enjoyed the view along the way passing by Carigara......:D

Know what guys? Even if it's more comfortable to take fast craft to Cebu, I took the plane there once just for the heck of it. The weather was good and the sun was just coming up as we hovered on top of Leyte. It was a breathtaking sight -- I can see both east and west of the island.

I loved the trip so much that I decided to take the plane again back home. When we landed on Tacloban I realized I was exhausted and had to endure a two-hour trip back to Ormoc. I finally knew how our Waray friends felt when going home during the pre- Cebu-Tacloban plane days. :)

Magnitude-5 quake rocks Leyte PDF Print

A magnitude-5 quake rocked parts of Leyte province in Eastern Visayas Tuesday afternoon, even as state seismologists warned of possible aftershocks.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 2 p.m., with the epicenter at 33 km southeast of Borongan town in Eastern Samar.

It said the quake was tectonic and felt at Intensity 4 in Borongan, Can-avid, and Llorente towns in Eastern Samar.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Tolosa, Leyte, Tacloban City, San Policarpio, Gen. MacArthur, San Julian, Taft, and Sulat towns in Eastern Samar; and at Intensity 2 in Jaro, Carigara, and Baybay towns in Leyte.

Tacloban City (10 March) -- The Philippine National Police, through the Tacloban City Police Office, is currently accepting applicants for Police Office 1.

According to PNP the qualifications for the applicants are as follows: must possess a formal Baccalaureate Degree; male or female and must at least be 21 years of age but not more than 30; must at least be 5'4 ft. or 162.5 cm. in height for male and 1.57 cm. or 5'2 ft. for female; and must be physically and mentally fit for training.

Further, the applicant must be eligible in accordance with the standards set by the Commission which are NAPOLCOM PNP Entrance, R.A 6506 (Licensed Criminologist), R.A. 1080 (Bar & Board Passer for the Baccalaureate Degree), PD 907 (Honor Graduate) and CSC Professional Exam; and lastly, must have no pending case in any court.

Interested parties are required to submit their Personal Data Sheet (Revised 2005); certified photocopy of their live Birth Certificate from the National Statistics Office; photocopy of transcript of records and diploma duly authenticated by the school registrar; and photocopy of report rating of his or her eligibility duly authenticated by the issuing Agency.

The applicant is also required to submit clearances from the their barangay, from the PNP, Police Provincial Office, Mayor's Office, Municipal Trial Court, Regional Trial Court, Provincial Prosecutor's Office, and the National Bureau of Investigation; one piece 2x2 black and white ID picture indicating the applicants name; and a Medical Certificate coming issued by the City/Municipal Health Office.

All applicants are required to submit their applications with all the requirements to the Philippine National Police, Police Regional Office VIII, Campetic, Palo, Leyte on or before March 19, 2010. (PIA-8)

The business of my wife's family had a branch in Tacloban but it was closed down about 2 or 3 years ago, we had to visit Tacloban periodically but eventually we had to close it down because it was too tiring traveling from Bacolod to Cebu then supercat for 2 hours to Ormoc then another 2 hours to Tacloban but we want to visit Tacloban again ang take a look see, especially now it's easier with the restored flights from Tacloban to Cebu and with more flights too.:cheers::cheers::cheers::)

The business of my wife's family had a branch in Tacloban but it was closed down about 2 or 3 years ago, we had to visit Tacloban periodically but eventually we had to close it down because it was too tiring traveling from Bacolod to Cebu then supercat for 2 hours to Ormoc then another 2 hours to Tacloban but we want to visit Tacloban again ang take a look see, especially now it's easier with the restored flights from Tacloban to Cebu and with more flights too.:cheers::cheers::cheers::)

ORMOC CITY - Citing development and job creation, the 11th Sangguniang Panlungsod of this city approved the request of Henry S. Gaisano II.

The city council, through resolution number 2010-024, posed no objection to the Gaisano Capital Group to use and convert a portion of road lot 15 which is a part of their 2.5 hectare property situated in Barangay Alegria. This is however subject to the approval of the housing and land use regulatory board (HLURB) region 8.

In his letter request asking permission from the city government to use a portion of lot 15 which is clasiffied as network of roads traversing the whole expanse of the property, the owner of a chain of superstores reasoned that the need for additional space to fit the requirement in the ideal size and design of the mall building they are planning to construct in the area. Originally, the proposed mall building is set to occupy lots 1,2,13 and portions of lots 10, 11, 12-A , 12-C and 15. Of all lots mentioned, only lot 15 needs conversion because of its classification.

Camella Homes, the first Manila-based property developer to venture in Leyte, said about 80% of the planned 200 house-and-lot units have been sold. The project will be turned over to buyers within the year.

With the positive turnout, Camella Homes general manager for Leyte Geraldine S. Gascon said the project would be expanded by at least three hectares. The company is eyeing lots adjacent to the nine-hectare property acquired by parent Vista Land and Lifescapes, Inc. for the project. Vista Land is the holding company of four business units -- Brittany, Crown Asia, Camella Homes and Communities Philippines.

Many people here want bigger homes with unique amenities because they want to step up in life. They are excited to live there. This is one of our fastest-growing projects in the country, Ms. Gascon told BusinessWorld.

Camella Homes launched its Leyte project a year ago. The project is located in Brgy. Campetic, Palo, Leyte.

Yeah, Tacloban is booming too, hoping for more bpo's opening in the city and nearby palo...... I like the catholic church in Palo, I have an old Reader's digest with a picture of the palo church interiors being used as hospital during the liberation with plenty of wounded american soldiers lying on cots......would like to visit Tacloban again pero busy gid kaayo....btw, I had a gf before from Tacloban, family name of lumbre....she's now married and in the states......sorry for the OT.....:D

Lactation station for nursing women employees, clients soon to open in Tanauan

Tacloban City (March 11) -- Nursing women employees of the Local Government of Tanauan, Leyte will soon be provided with a Lactation Station where they can breastfeed their babies.

This was announced by Mayor Roque Tiu during the Tanauan Women's Day Summit which was held on March 8 at the Tanauan Gym.

Mayor Tiu informed that the Lactation Station will be situated at the Old Municipal Hall right at back of the new Municipal Building. The site is now undergoing renovation particularly three rooms in the Second Floor. Two rooms will be for transient clients of the LGU while the third room will be utilized as the Lactation Station.

Mayor Tiu said that the provision of Lactation Station is in consonance with the country's commitment to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, among which is reducing child under nutrition and mortality.

In fact, the LGU is about to open the new Tanauan Birthing Station from the Japanese Government which was built in order to help meet the MDG Goals on reducing mother and child mortality rate, Mayor Tiu said.

These interventions are the Local Government Unit's contribution towards achievement of the MDGs, the good Mayor said.

The Lactation Station, Mayor Tiu said, will be a comfortable area where breastfeeding mothers and clients can extract their mil and feed their babies. The Lactation Station will be provided with facilities like a chair and a table, hand washing facility and cold storage facility or refrigerator.

With this intervention, is the conduct of advocacy campaigns, in order to create an enabling environment for breastfeeding mothers, aside from the health benefits this will provide the babies who are the most vulnerable sector of society, Mayor Tiu added.

The Lactation Station is in also in compliance with the Milk Code of the Philippines and Executive Order No. 273 "Approving and Adopting the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development 1995-2025."

It is likewise premised on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is a covenant that defends the survival rights of every child.

Mayor Tiu added that it is also in answer to the Regional Development Council Resolution encouraging the government agencies and local government units to provide breastfeeding rooms for their employees and clients. (PIA 8)
