EDC income up 26.5% to P7.38 billion in 2009

MANILA, Philippines - Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. (EDC), the country’s largest geothermal power producer, posted a 26.5-percent increase in its core net income last year to P7.38 billion from P5.83 billion a year earlier.

Company president and COO Richard Tantoco attributed the significant improvement in core profit to the hike in total revenues, more favorable exchange rates, and the impact of the renewable energy (RE) law on its accounting treatment.

He traced the higher earnings primarily to the P2.73-billion increase in revenues from electricity sales and drilling services, and the complete turnaround from a P9.4-billion foreign exchange loss in 2008 to a P1.3-billion foreign exchange gain in 2009.

These offset the write-down of P2.9-billion deferred tax assets arising under the RE Law, the P2.22-billion increase in operating expenses mainly due to steam augmentation activities, and the impact of the P3.1-billion one-time arbitration award in 2008 which reduced expenses and increased other income that year.

“Although the one-time write-down in deferred tax assets affected our income, it was a necessary step before we can realize the fiscal benefits afforded by the RE law. The long wait for the law’s implementation is well worth it. With the assistance of the RE law’s incentives, we will push hard to develop new geothermal areas in the country and expand what we have in a sustainable manner,” Tantoco said.

He said the company is proceeding smoothly with the redenomination of debt stock and upcoming retirement of its Miyazawa II and other on-lent loans.

“Our loan currency mix is now predominantly peso denominated after the full payment of our Miyazawa I loan and the raising of P25.1 billion through fixed corporate notes and bonds last year. After a decade, we are finally eliminating third currency risk by paying off our yen loans and converting most of our debt to pesos,” he said.

EDC used a portion of the funds it raised to prepay the seven-year Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) staple financing for the acquisition of Tongonan I and Palinpinon plants, purchase of state-of-the-art drilling rig, and repayment of ¥12-billion Miyazawa 1 loan in June 2009.

Last year’s revenue from drilling services increased 16.8 percent to P848 million from P726 million in 2008.

“We are committed to deliver best value for our stockholders by improving further on operational efficiencies and sustaining robust profits and cash flows. We will keep our balance sheet healthy to maintain the confidence of financial institutions as we expand our footprint both here and abroad,” Tantoco said.

EDC owns and operates geothermal steamfields in Leyte, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Sorsogon and North Cotabato .

It has a combined capacity of 1,199 megawatt. It also operates the 701.5-MW Unified Leyte, 192.5-MW Palinpinon, 106-MW Mindanao and 49-MW Northern Negros geothermal power plants.

btw, update regarding the seemingly slow pace of const. at the macarthur resort hotel: they will go full-blast next month. technical aspect delayed the construction and according to LKY reps who were here this week, all are getting in place. the renderings that were posted here, according to them, are not the final designs but one of the choices. so we could still expect for some surprises. water sports for adults and children are also being included in the plans and a possible ____________ facility (oppss! classified as of this moment) is also being mulled. the whole macarthur park is included in their dev't. plans, so, dev't is not just confined at the resort area only.

Id rather to prefer MANDARIN CHINESSE or FOKIEN CHINESSE nala ig tutdo ha aton since we are surrounded by Fil-Chinesse Community and they're dominantly manipulating nor monopolizing the businesses/economy not only in Tacloban, Leyte, Region 08, the Philippines but the whole world. So that we can communicate and interact with them and make TAWAD na din hehehehe....
Before, there is a plan by DEPed to include Chinesse language in both Elementray and High-School curricula ano ang nangyari?

Young mom wins Leyte talent search

TACLOBAN CITY – The province of Leyte added another singing sensation to its list of young talents as the Season 5 Leyte IDOL Star Category closes Sunday night naming young mother May Obando as this year’s grand winner.

Obando wowed the judges, while getting a standing ovation in most of the three performances she rendered during the Grand Finals night held at the Leyte National High School Gymnasium, which earned her a P150,000 cash prize, and P50,000 worth of other prizes.

This year’s Leyte IDOL winner sang the songs “May Bukas Pa” in the OPM Category, “On My Own” from the play Les Miserables in the Broadway category, and went upbeat in the RNB Category – all three performances earned for herself high points from the judges composed of singer Bituin Escalante, singer and comedienne Joy Viado, and songwriter Jonathan Manalo.

Obando’s husband and child were among the hundreds of people that jam-packed the gym together with the rest of the IDOL finalists’ supporters from Tanauan, Leyte, Ormoc City, and Baybay City.

Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla opened the Grand Finals Night with an OPM number, after which he announced to continue the IDOL singing search – saying this is more than just a talent search.

MANILA, Philippines - Low-cost carrier Air Philippines re-launched itself yesterday under the brand name Airphil Express, boosting its fleet with the acquisition of two A320-200 aircraft.

The two A320s, sporting the new Airphil Express livery and configured mono-class with 177 seats, will fly starting today (March 28) from Manila to Iloilo, Bacolod, Puerto Princesa and Cagayan de Oro, signaling the resumption of jet service to these domestic routes.

Tycoon Lucio Tan, chairman of Airphil’s parent Philippine Airlines, said Airphil Express is acquiring a total of 20 new airplanes over the next four years, to be added to the current fleet of eight Bombadier Q400 and Q300 turbo-prop aircrafts.

Aside from the two leased narrow-body jets, four brand-new A320s will also be delivered from Airbus manufacturing facility in Toulouse, France between September and November 2010. Four more aircraft will join the fleet next year, five aircraft in 2012 and another five in 2013. Tan added.

“We want to position Airphil Express as a low-cost carrier offering quality service,” David Lim, president of Airphil, said.

“The modernization of our fleet will hopefully enable us to increase market share while the industry braces for the eventual rebound,” he added.

The route network of Airphil Express will continue to expand as it adds to its existing flights the following domestic destinations: Tuguegarao, Naga, San Jose (Mindoro) Busuanga, Boracay (Caticlan) Catarman, Calbayog, Tacloban, Ormoc, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu, Surigao, Dipolog, Cagayan De Oro, Ozamiz, Zamboanga, Davao and Masbate.

More domestic points will be added to the network when more jets join the fleet.

Domingo Chua, chairman of Airphil’s board, said “this is the start of a brighter tomorrow for the company as we see more A320s to come and, in fact, Airphil Express will be acquiring 20 new aircraft over the next four years.”

As we bless our first A320 and launch as a new and more vibrant image to the market, we boldly show our competitors that we are still here and we intend to stay and Airphil Express shall once more rise to the challenge, true to its vision and mission, to be the premier low-cost carrier not only of the Philippines but of Asia,” Chua added.

“Together we will develop new routes and reach more destinations both in the domestic and regional areas. With low fares, we will compete and with our excellent service we will prevail.”

He also said that “the resilency, ability, strength and courage of the men and women of Airphil Express will be tested once more and we are about to cross a threshold, we are about to make that first step towards a brighter Airphil Express and we will do it together.”

San Juanico Bridge is one of the things that fascinates me about Tacloban City since childhood.

Walking the whole stretch of the bridge (by myself) from Samar to Leyte gives me a sense of satisfaction.

fork of sta rita, ah so you started walking from samar to leyte and not leyte to samar. good idea coz it would be more exhausting to start from leyte to samar then go back again to leyte. galing. :okay:

Tama ka. Initially i was planning to walk both directions but i decided just to walk one way since i can just zigzag along the bridge and take photos from both sides. Saka, mas mabuti na kung gabihin man ako sa pagtawid ko ng tulay dapat mas malapit ako sa downtown ng Tacloban. :)

The pics of San Juanico bridge are postcard pretty, btw the San Juanico bridge can be seen from the upper floors of Hotel d Angelo, I took a photo when I last stayed there but sadly it didn't turn out well because it was too far away and I was using an ordinary cam........good morning Tacloban!!!....:cheers:

wala naman problema sakin ang check-and-balance na iyan, parang ganito lang yan pag-admin ang presidente expect taga opposition ang besi-presedente and vice versa o dili kaya half of senatorial slot is administration and other half is opposition and few are independent ganun naman talaga ang trend...
(pero ganun din mas talamak ang corruption...)

im wondering, why does any anyone love to take a shot the frontside of this Capitol maganda naman ang rear side ng Capitol ah!
Nakakareminisce lang yung not-so-good and not-so-bad experience ko nung unang job hunting ko right after I graduated from college nagtatambay palagi kami dito hehehe...

Yup. I did go there but I'm digging up my 'baul' slowly. Got plenty of pics to share. :)

Once the seat of the Philippine Commonwealth Government on 1944 under President Sergio Osmeña, Sr. Construction of the Capitol started in 1917 during the administration of Governor Salvador K. Demetrio, completed and inaugurated in 1924 during the administration of Governor Honorio Lopez. The original edifice was renovated, expanded and beautified 40 years after upon assumption to office of Governor Norberto B. Romualdez, Jr. in 1964.

Historic viewing of two murals depicting the MacArthur Landing was unveiled on October 20, 1964 by President Diosdado Macapagal while the First Mass was unveiled on March 31, 1965 by Ambassador Fernando Lobao de Carvalho of Portugal and the Marquis de Aumon representing the Government of Spain.

it's not as good as 25years ago. :) naliligo kami dyan sa UP botanical noon. it was more private and clean in the past.

^^Sayang. Didn't have the time to go around the cityhall to get to the tower.

You should try the banca one day. I only did a turn around trip to Basey. Spent like less than an hour there. Pero I had a chance to chat with a fellow passenger on board the boat to Basey. She mistook me as a seminarista. :D

how i wish there will be a fountain within the Cancabato Bay that will add a dull-overlooking scenery from the Balyuan Amphitheater, i know it sounds weird (and too expensive) but surely a one of a kind attraction and probably it will add a landmark for Tacloban....hayz....

You should try the banca one day. I only did a turn around trip to Basey. Spent like less than an hour there. Pero I had a chance to chat with a fellow passenger on board the boat to Basey. She mistook me as a seminarista. :D

hahaha looks meek kaya seminarista. mabuti nalang seminarista ang tingin sayo. mabuti di nya sinabi na "waray ka pa asawa doy?".. "kay may anak ko nga daraga, waray pa uyab." :D

^^ you barely scratched the surface @oboi. region 8 has more to offer especially on eco-tourism: rock formations in biri, northern samar; sohoton caves in basey and calbiga caves all of western, samar; calico-an island (surfers' paradise) in guiuan, e. samar. danao lake, where geothermal fields are located, @ ormoc-kananga, leyte. white sand beaches @ cuatro islas and canigao islands. extreme sports @ agas-agas bridge, sogod, so. leyte, currently the highest bridge in the philippines. southern leyte is also famous for their dive sites.

"once you see leyte (and region 8), you shall return" :)
