Imee is not a registered voter of Tolosa, says poll officer
TACLOBAN CITY — Nope, she is not a registered voter in Leyte. Not yet, at least.

This was confirmed by the elections officer of Tolosa amid rumors that Imee Marcos had registered herself at the hometown of her mother, former first lady Imelda Marcos.

“She never went to the office to register. And if ever she will, everybody will know it considering that she is famous, being the daughter of Imelda,” elections officer Socorro Altarejos said.

Rumored had said that the young Marcos went to Tolosa to enlist herself as a voter as part of purported plan to run for governor of the province. She and her flamboyant mother were in the city last December to shoot a documentary film on the former first lady.

The two Marcoses, as part of their itinerary, went to Tolosa, the hometown of the former first lady.

Altarejos said that even the former first lady is no longer a registered voter of Tolosa. The Marcos widow was once the congressional representative of Leyte’s first district with Barangay Olot, Tolosa, as her voting and residence address.

She, however, transferred her voting registration in 1998 when she made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency.

The Commission on Elections is initiating a year-round voters registration in preparation for the 2010 general elections.

Altarejos said that she has no idea whether the former congresswoman of Ilocos Norte would enlist herself in Tolosa as part of her purported plan to make a political career in Leyte.

A source from the Romualdez camp, who declined to be named, said that the possibility of the young Marcos to run for a public post in Leyte is not remote.

“(Actually), she is not interested. But there are offers for her to run. And if Mrs. Marcos will ask her daughter (to run here in) Leyte, I don’t think she will refuse,” the source said.

Her cousin, Philip Romualdez, was also rumored to be interested to run for governor of the province.

Incumbent Gov. Jericho Petilla is expected to seek his third and last term in next year’s elections.

The Romualdez source also confirmed that Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez is working a bill for the immediate creation of congressional district for Tacloban which is now a highly urbanized city.
“It’s population will not be a hindrance for it to have its own congressional representative,” said the sources, adding that this could be legally corrected.

As an HUC, Tacloban is entitled to have its own congressional representative. The law, however, mandate that for it to have a congressman of its own, it must have about 250,000 population.
