Southern Leyte is safe as of now.

There was a miracle in the storm arrival and landfall. According to my co-construction worker, the standing image of the Virgin Mary in Maasin which was believed to have been built because of a man who dreamed of Mama Mary, destroyed the momentum of the typhoon prior to its landfall.

Once again, the Lord spared us from another calamity.

^^ tacloban fishermen are not innocent either. me personally have a friend in san jose who have fishing boats. lately, one of their vessels was caught at sea fronting tanauan, accused that the crew were dynamite fishing. a chase ensued until their boat was fired upon and sank by the bantay dagat personnel of tanauan. case is still on-going. you see, seas around tacloban are no longer bountiful with fish due to over-fishing. these made fishermen from tacloban to venture farther outside tacloban waters, even to samar. population-wise, there are more tacloban fishermen out there than fishermen from nearby municipalities in the vicinity between samar and leyte. and fishermen from these municipalities can easily be monitored and identified by their respective bantay dagats because of their relatively small numbers compared to tacloban. so your comment with regards to this was a bit misinformed, misguided and out of bounds.

In an objective point of view, it's absolutely shameful. The fact that a national TV has done a thorough investigation, had it been a false accusation, that will be the national TV's responsibility. What do we expect from tele-viewers not residing in the region? Pity? Compassion? It might be out of bounds but it has been said and done! For years, this activity wasn't stopped. Don't tell me they don't know what is happening in their backyard? It's like a house owner allowing theft in his possessions! I mean no offense sir Orville, just trying to express how I interpret the scenario. Besides, it's politics which will be the last to kick again.

Was in Maasin yesterday and I was able to viit Metro and took some pics inside.

Here's my thought:
1. Nice choice of items but limited. Mga nindot ila baligya pero gamay rag kapili an.
2. For those asking which one is bigger, GC Sogod is way bigger than Metro. Per observation, there's no room for expansion.
3. Lastly, I like the interior of Metro Hiper Maasin.

I got the chance to talk with the Ad Promo dept. head, she said the original concept of Metro hiper is a hipermarket alone, but due to the overwhelming response and some complaints of the consumers, the management had a meeting about adding more stocks and making the store more that just a supermarket. the first 3 consecutive days, Metro Maasin was SECOND in terms of sales among all of the Metro Stores in the country, next to Metro Ayala. Grand opening on October 27, 2011 more stocks to come. the branded ones and luanching of 12 Wishes of Christmas will also take place.

After Carigara has lost its title the capital of Leyte upon the expulsion of the Jesuits from all dominions of Spain by the decree of King Charles III,in 1767, the title,"Cabecera de Leyte" was transferred to Palo, then to Tanauan, then to Dagami then finally to Tacloban".

Top notch resort hotel in Leyte to open in December (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=60643)

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Oct. 24 (PIA) -– Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho L. Petilla informed that the fully renovated and top notch resort in Leyte which was formerly known as MacArthur Park Beach Resort Hotel, will open on December 15.
Governor Petilla said that the Singaporean investor, LKY Property Holdings, led by its president Mr. Wilbert Lee, has given him the assurance that the resort will open on December 15 and that construction work is now in full swing.
Petilla said that Mr. Lee, himself, took him to a tour around the new facilities in the 4.9 hectares property, just a day before the October 20 Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary.
Governor Petilla was happy with what he saw. He said that it appears that LKY pushed for total reconstruction, not renovation, as all the old buildings were torn down and new structures were erected.
An elegant lobby now sits in place adjacent to the hotel’s restaurant and spa lounges, Governor Petilla said. He added that the hotel will also have an outdoor pool and fitness facilities which will make the new Leyte Resort Hotel truly a class of its own, where one could decompress from life's pressures in the healing tranquility of an environment that truly feels "away from it all."
A new building is now in place which will house the hotel’s designated area for functions, meetings and conferences. The ballroom is estimated to be able to accommodate 1000 sitting capacity, very conducive for big events. This will indeed, solve the Region’s major problem of not being able to host national conferences because of lack of venue.
In the past, Governor Petilla has always lamented that the province of losing the opportunity of hosting national conferences due to the lack of venues that will cater to national conventions and other events with bigger crowd.
It was learned that the LKY MacArthur Park Hotel will have 65 rooms, several of which will be suites with living room area, a tiny kitchen and open balconies facing the scenic expanse of Pacific Ocean with a romantic view of the sun rising every morning.
Already, LKY has invested at least P150 million for the hotel construction. LYK has a 25 year contract with the Provincial Government of Leyte, with a P300 million total investment for the hotel’s full renovation.
This early, not only the people of Leyte but guests from all around the world are already excited to see and experience for themselves the latest addition to Leyte’s landmarks and investments. (PIA 8)

The eco-zone to be put up by the SMC, according to Petilla, will cater to Chinese locators, among which are manufacturers of aluminum.

plan kasi namin mag put-up ng icafe dyan... around 80units...
kakaopen lang namin sa ORMOC with 91units...
and we are planning to expand to either tacloban or maasin next year...

Napapag-iwanan na ang Ormoc. :ohno:

if mauuna ang robinsons calbayog kaysa robinson ormoc... i will be really3x disappointed...

pero baka uunahin talaga yung sa calbayog kasi malapit lang ormoc from tacloban... nasa ~60kms lang irrc...

pero calbayog to tacloban is ~170kms daw...

P220-M Burauen-Albuera road opening project going on (http://leytesamardaily.net/2011/06/p220-m-burauen-albuera-road-opening-project-going-on/)
23 June 2011

PALO, Leyte – The work for the P220 milllion Burauen-Albuera road opening is on progress with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) now implementing the third phase of the project.
The report said that first phase and second phase of the 12-kilometer new road was completed in May 2010 and April 2011, respectively. The third phase of the road opening is now 56% complete.

The road opening project started in 2008. It traverses some rebel-infested villages in the borders of northern and western Leyte.

The project will provide alternate road between northern, central and southwestern part of Leyte. It is expected to shorten travel time between the cities of Ormoc and Tacloban.

Motorists coming from the regional capital have to pass through eight towns to get to Ormoc. In the new road, travelers will reach Ormoc from Tacloban by passing through five towns.

“The road will contribute a lot in improving peace and order situation in the area,” Asis added. (Sarwell Q. Meniano)

is VSU (the main campus only) the "largest" university in terms of student population in the whole Region 8? or are you referring to the "land area"?

and if land area nga ang tinutukoy mo.
based on your knowledge ano ang pinakamalaking university in our region with regards to student population (on a single campus)?

thanks

@ormocanon

is VSU (the main campus only) the "largest" university in terms of student population in the whole Region 8? or are you referring to the "land area"?

and if land area nga ang tinutukoy mo.
based on your knowledge ano ang pinakamalaking university in our region with regards to student population (on a single campus)?

thanks

dati kaming nakatira sa VSU campus... ^_^

^^ I think in terms of student population, EVSU-Main or LNU is the largest in the region. :)

Wow! Nindot naman kaayo ang OSPA FMC ron . Correct me if I am wrong, ma-o ni ang most modern ug updated na hospital sa Western Leyte pagka karon.

What's the update with Ormoc Doctors Hospital - the sister hospital of Cebu Doctors? Hopefully Ormocanon can post some recent photos of the construction progress.

Im proud that Ormoc has really rose to be the mauswagon ug bulahan nga siyudad karon after that cathastropic flash flood that killed over 8,000 Ormocanons 20 years ago.

Good job Ormocanons!!

Salamat sa letrato sa soon to be Ormoc Doctors. Any word when ang grand opening? Mura pa man dugay dugay kay wala pa man gyud ma porma ang facade etc. But yes, modern ug updated na gyud hospital /medical facilities sa Ormoc. At least may option na mga taga Ormoc and people from Western Leyte with both modern tertiary medical centers like OSPA FMC and Ormoc Doctors. Imbes adto sa Cebu, na-a na lang sa Ormoc. Also puede pud ang local government with the help of the Ormoc medical community mag push ug medical tourism potential for the city. Boom man karon ang medical tourism specially with people from other countries opting for cheaper but good quality medical care in countries that offer them as they cannot afford sa ilang mga countries.

Sus booming na gyud Ormoc, dili lang commercially but na-a na pud two modern hi tech hospitals diha sa ato. Kulang na gyud airline that will offer direct flight to Manila kay sayang man pud ang guinabuhat nga bag ong airport terminal kung walay airline mo biyahe diha sa Ormoc.

Congrats Ormoc!Ormoc Doctors Hospital construction update Nov. 9, 2011

Leyte can house call centers, but local business not biting
http://cuervo.com.ph/real-estate/leyte-can-house-call-centers-but-local-business-not-biting.html
ORMOC CITY—The call-center firm Apac Customer Services has made Leyte its home, proving that the province is capable of accommodating information and communication technology (ICT) companies. This was bared by Trade Regional Director Cynthia R. Nierras during the First Investment Conference in Ormoc.

Apac’s facility in Palo town currently has 600 seats. It plans to expand to 200 more with the coming of a new partner. Nierras credits this capability of Leyte to its modern communication facilities. Unfortunately, the economic potentials of Apac’s presence remain largely untapped by local businesses.

Despite being in Leyte for two years, Apac still looks to Cebu for its computer hardware maintenance services which local contractors could have filled. The company has not looked into local suppliers for its furniture and fixtures. While other ICT economic zones are teeming with establishments like coffee bars and restaurants, the Leyte ICT Park where Apac is located doesn’t even have a convenience store.

Another big problem of Apac is where to house its foreign executives. Despite their proximity to the regional capital of Tacloban, Apac executives are billeted at a hotel in Abuyog town, some 50.62 km south, or 45 minutes to one-hour drive from Palo.

“Here in Ormoc you have very good hotels. Tacloban needs hotels like what you have in Ormoc,” Nierras said.

But the biggest potential Apac brings is its manpower requirement which is an opportunity to the region’s universities to provide training enhancement skills on English proficiency and computer use to its students.

Nierras expressed fear that if the mentioned services remain unmet, other call centers giving Apac three years to operate before coming in to Leyte might change their mind.

afaik, may Gloria Jean's at Dunkin Donuts sa loob ng APAC.. ewan ko nalang bat kulang sa fastfood chains sa area na yan kahit maraming establishments dyan (AMA, St. Paul's, Gov't Center and APAC)

^^ I'm afraid POLITICS is the reason. I wish to elaborate my post but I think it will be best to keep politics away from the thread :)

That's undeniably true. Tacloban lacks better hotels. :ohno::ohno::ohno:

^^ I agree we lack better hotels (main reason why their are many U/Cs hotel in the city) but it does not necessarily mean that our existing hotels are not good. We have good hotels such as Hotel Alejandro, Asia Stars, Rosvenil and some small pension houses.
