^^ I'm afraid POLITICS is the reason. I wish to elaborate my post but I think it will be best to keep politics away from the thread :)
I hope you would to enlighten those of us who don't know. This is a discussion forum after all. :)
Ormoc is just so AWESOME! Makadto ak Ormoc next week. Mangarigo kami Agalon pero Ialodge la kami mastay. I like Ialodge. One thing, in its lodge classification, mura siyag hotel standard. Or even better than GV.:cheers::cheers:
Thanks for the compliment bay. I luv Tacloban too.
^^ wow.! is the latest? Nice! Favorite talaga ng foreigners ang Ormoc City while Tacloban City has its strength in domestic tourists naman :) Cheers to both EV cities
It seems like it. Dito naka-base ang Leyte foreigners Organization, the only expat club in Region 8.

Yes Tacloban has its share of good hotels basing on local standards. But what Nierras is referring to I think are those that would cater to discriminating foreigners. That foreign executives of Apac would rather check in at Abuyog Hotel is a good case in point. But I know things will get better there when Oriental and Go Hotel are done.

Salamat kaayo! Very impressive kaayo ang growth sa Ormoc. Kung commercial establishments lang, bulahan kaayo ang Ormoc. Then with the opening of Ormoc Doctors and the upgrading of OSPA FMC, puede na anha na lang sa Ormoc for medical needs. Then sa educations front, with institutions like WLC, EVSU, San Lorenzo Ruiz,AMA, STI and SPC, option pud anha na lang mo eskwela sa Ormoc for college. And then na-a pud ang strategic port of Ormoc serving West Leyte and kulang na lang gyud an airline offering direct flights to Manila feasibly serving Ormoc and West Leyte. Hopefully mo resume flights diha sa ato with the new terminal and runway upgrades that are being done. Keep it up Ormocanons!

^^ the geothermal power plant is a very big industry in Ormoc as well as the vast agricultural area and I AFAIK, the Ormoc City Government won a case against PNOC-EDC for back taxes (?) and I believe it contributed a lot to the coffers of the city government. Ormoc also surpasses the income of other HUCs in the Visayas area such as Lapu-lapu and Mandaue. While Tacloban has its strength on a very strong commercial and service-oriented activities. If you would peruse that data, Ormoc's income for 2009 was around 180M and it jumped to 386M for 2010, almost a 60% increase and again, AFAIK, no other city accomplished that feat :)

^^ Nevertheless, Tacloban remains on top economically being the center of everything. It has the busiest port and airport -- just imagine the thousands of passengers going in and out of the city everyday.

In education, Tacloban has the most number of universities and tertiary schools. Imagine how many students contribute to its economy. Also the thousands of employees in the regional offices of national gov't agencies.

Tacloban also catches the biggest chunk of the consumer market from Samar, Biliran, North and East Leyte, reason why its commercial activities is the liveliest hereabouts. The highly-paid employees of APAC spend their money in Tacloban.

Do you know the store Ms.828? It's main store is in Ormoc pero mas malaki pa ang branch sa Tacloban. That city has Robinson's but it still can accommodate SM without saturating its market.

Baybay City Reclaims Again

BAYBAY CITY - The decade-old reclamation area of Baybay that currently locates the veterans' park, wet and dry market, bus and van terminal, and harbor will be expanded January, next year.

City officials says Rizal Boulevard will be stretched up to 1-kilometer with a new diversion road connecting north and south of the 1-kilometer R. Magsaysay Avenue.

On the other hand, Baybay Barbeque Plaza, a strip of 20 bars, restaurants, and lounges will be demolished on December, this year. They will be located temporarily on a vacant lot across Baybay Terminal.

Andoks, a Manila-based food chain will open on the reclaimed Rizal Boulevard Diversion Road. It will be the first commercial area located fronting the promenade. Baybay Ice Plant opens on January, next year at the old Rizal Boulevard strip.

The new 1-kilometer stretch will feature the longest promenade of Region 8 resembling Manila's Baywalk with bars, clubs, and lounges on its half.

Meanwhile, weighing on two large shopping malls namely Robinsons and Metro Gaisano is eyed on the new reclamation Area.

Baybay City Mayor, Carmen L. Cari emphasized that "Baybay is expected to experience an increase number of investors, thus income generating; Baybay deserves to be a city..."

Baybay City is one of the largest cities in the region in terms of land area and has the 4th largest population in Region 8.

Flights to Maasin city by 2013
Cebu Pacific & Zest Air interested http://www.southernleytetimes.com/images/Cebu-Pacific-Small-Plane.gif
PANANAWAN, MAASIN CITY – The Maasin City Airport may start to have 2 to 3 weekly flights to and from Cebu City starting 2013.According to Congressman Roger G. Mercado, Zest Air and Cebu Pacific were interested in the project. Zest Air like Cebu Pacific caters to budget fare conscious clients. If the plan materializes the two airlines would use twin engine planes like the ones Cebu Pacific is now using for its Cebu- Boracay flights.
Mercado told the Southern Leyte times that the airfield’s perimeter fence had already been completed, and that work on the airport terminal would start soon. The airfield is presently being used as a flight school for aspiring pilots and is being serviced by Cessna single engine planes for passengers to and from Cebu and Tacloban City. Engineer Victor Lerias who owns a fighting cock ranch in nearby Barangay Libhu said he welcomed the development and hoped it would finally happen.

Engineer Lerias, Congressman Mercado and SLT Publisher Antonio Reyes had planned to construct a golf and country club beside the airfield several years ago but like most plans it fizzled out. The resort would have had a panoramic view of the scenic Camotes Sea and Bohol.

PPA proposes P200M Ormoc port expansion

ORMOC CITY, Philippines — A P200-million port expansion project in this city has been presented by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to the City Council for approval.

PPA-Ormoc manager Glen Cabañez presented the proposal to the city council, citing port traffic congestion that necessitates the provision of additional space, which he termed as port zone delineation.

Cabañez said PPA is planning to spend P200 million for the proposed project to be taken from the corporate fund budget. The project is scheduled to be done in a 6 to 12-month period.

PPA's engineer Gerry Liguido said the money will be utilized for the constructions of ferry boat wharf, transit shed, back-up area, two roro ramps, passenger terminal and a 2-storey operations building on an almost-a-hectare coastal area.

The City Council did not oppose the proposal, but Councilor Claudio Larrazabal, transportation committee chairman, requested for a commitment from the PPA not to expand towards the south of the existing port that would block the view of the city's plaza-by-the-bay.

Cabañez assured city officials the PPA would comply with the request, as shown in the project plan. "We are expanding sideways towards the wet market located in the opposite direction of the plaza," she said.

Mayor Eric Codilla, for his part, told The FREEMAN that he favored the project and endorsed it for approval by the City Council. He however asked Cabañez never to put up tarpaulins announcing the project in the area and crediting it to efforts of some politicians. The ban on political posters must be complied with, said the mayor.

Cabañez replied with his assurance and declaration that this project is not a political one, but initiated and implemented by the PPA alone. (FREEMAN)

Lucy gets PPA’s nod for P135-million port expansion proj’t
by EVMAIL NEWS on NOVEMBER 22, 2011

“Good news” congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez has scored another feat!
Congresswoman Gomez of the 4th district of Leyte, who did not rest during the recent session break but continued working to bring more projects to her district, was elated after she received news from the Philippine Ports Authority that her request to expand the mixed passenger and container port in Ormoc has been granted.
The congresswoman said that no less than Atty. Juan Sta. Ana, general manager of the PPA, texted to tell her that he had approved her request to expand the Ormoc port. “The development of this port is upon your initiative and concern for the people of Ormoc. I fully support all your efforts”, Sta. Ana texted the congresswoman.
It was further learned that P135-million have been earmarked for the port expansion project which is expected to decongest the port and make it safer to both foot and moving traffic. The congresswoman is profuse in her gratitude to Sta. Ana and other PPA officials, saying she did not expect an immediate response. She met with them just after the House went into recess last week.
Construction will soon start and the “good news” congresswoman is asking the public to be patient with whatever inconvenience it might give to them, saying “we have to sacrifice a little” but assured she will ensure that the project will be done on schedule and all safety measures for the public are taken.
Lucy has told constituents that she will always bring them “good news”, and has not failed so far.
On the other hand, Richard Gomez, the congresswoman’s husband and chief of staff, added that in their discussion with PPA general manager Sta. Ana regarding the port expansion, he even suggested that in the future, a portion of the public market beside the port could be converted to pave the way to really expand it.
To compensate for the space that will be eaten up, he suggests another market should be developed somewhere else in the city.
“This way, the city proper would be decongested as people will have the choice of going to the market which is more convenient for them. A new market can accommodate more market vendors”, said Richard Gomez, aside from providing a venue for a new crop of entrepreneurs.
Ormoc is a growing city, he pointed out, and it was imperative for government to create opportunities for its young generation.
One of Lucy’s landmark projects is the P660-million Ormoc diversion road which will divert traffic with no business to do inside the city proper from going through it. This is envisioned to decongest the worsening traffic. Another is the concreting of the Matag-ob-Palompon road, longed for by the residents for decades already, but only saw reality when she became congresswoman.
The Ormoc diversion road, meanwhile, is exciting property owners nearby and along the soon-to-be constructed highway because it will enhance their properties’ value. A big shopping mall operator has even brought a property nearby, speculating a boom in the area when the diversion road is finished.
Richard Gomez has also been making representations with landowners nearby to donate portions of their land to the government to become parks and plazas along the new highway to generate economic buzz in the area.
He foresees that in a short span of time, with the proper development plan, the area could become a new commercial hub. In fact, after news that funds have been allocated for the project already, a well-known family is gearing up to develop a subdivision in the area, one that is at par with the country’s best, an insider said. Maasin City embarks on reclamation expansion anew

by Bong Pedalino
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Nov. 22 (PIA) -- An additional round of reclaimed land will soon complement the bullish investor confidence now pervading in this city, as the local government has started negotiations with well-known private developers.
This was learned from City Mayor Maloney Samaco last week on the sidelines of a GIZ-led initiative that creates awareness on the importance of maps, the Geographic Information System (GIS).
In fact, one of the exhibits of the GIS day Thursday was a map of the city in tarpaulin showing the areas that would be developed into an expanded reclamation site with a total area of 80 hectares.
Samaco said the city government has been waiting for the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) so it can give the go-signal for the property developers to start the expanded reclamation project.
He was optimistic, though, that work on the city’s space expansion can start anytime next year.
The city’s physical extension, as viewed from the development map, involved two phases, from 2005 up to 2015, referred as the Planned Unit Development (PUD), which extends southward from the existing Espina boulevard, from the back of city hall up to the wet market area.
The second phase, programmed to materialize from the year 2015 onwards, would cover a vast space of tidal flats off barangay Combado up to a point called “Kahoy Daku” along the Combado-Lib-og border.
City Planning Officer Engr. Othello Rich told Philippine Information Agency (PIA) while looking at the map that the open beach at the back of city hall would be transferred at the new tip of the soon-to-be newly reclaimed spot, while the mangrove belt off Combado will not be touched. (PIA-Southern Leyte/bong)

I really dislike politics but this is what Lucy is exactly doing -- she's grabbing credit for the port project. Yung Tacloban port expansion nga mas malaki ang halaga at P375 million pero walang politiko ang umaangkin dahil purely PPA-funded project. Dito ang lakas umeksena ng mga taga-congressional, something that has never happened before. :ohno:

Wildcats favorites in PCCL Visayas
http://www.philstar.com/sportsarticle.aspx?publicationsubcategoryid=69&articleid=752461&keyword=sp_pba
MANILA, Philippines - University of Iloilo Wildcats, the defending Visayas region and Iloilo collegiate league champion, looms as the favorites as the Visayas regional championship kicks off the four-day collegiate basketball festival starting today at the Ormoc Astrodome in Ormoc City.

City government and sports officials headed by Mayor Eric Codilla of Ormoc City, Councilor Ruben Capahi, chairman, city sports council, and Roger Lagarde, OCSSO (collegiate league of Ormoc) president, are hosting the biggest gathering of top collegiate teams in recent years.

“The event will give local fans the rare opportunity to see champion teams from Manila and other provinces compete for pride and glory of their respective schools,” said Codilla.

Competing with the Wildcats for a seat in the Sweet 16 Finals are the ACSAT Lightnings (champion, Negros Oriental), West Negros University (champion, Negros Occidental) and AMA Computer Learning Center Titans (Leyte champion).

The winner of the Visayas regional will face the CESAFI runner-up, SWU Cobras, on Nov. 29 for a place in the Final Four. The other game is a knock-out affair between the CESAFI champion UC Webmasters and Mindanao champion STI Olympians.

Nov. 30 is the climax of the festival as four teams compete for two remaining seats in the Final Four. Two visiting teams which survived the tough Luzon-Metro Manila step-ladder knock-out games – San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags and Letran Knights – collide in the first game for the Luzon-Metro Manila bracket championship and a seat in the Final Four.

The main game will feature the two surviving teams from Southern Islands, winners of the Nov. 29 games, in a battle for the last seat in the Final Four.

The Luzon-Metro Manila bracket champion and the overall champion of Southern Islands will join UAAP champion Ateneo Blue Eagles and NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions in the Final Four round robin Dec. 5 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Final Four Championship round robin is scheduled Dec. 5 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan. The games of the Final Four are covered by ABS-CBN Sports and will be aired live over Studio 23.

The PCCL National Collegiate Championship is supported by SMART, M. V. Pangilinan, Molten Balls, Filoil Flying V and SM Ticketing.

^^ Indeed, GRM is the best and largest Gaisano store in the region but with all due respect and modesty aside, malayu-layo pa ang lalakarin ng kahit na anung Gaisano store to directly compete with any Robinsons Mall in terms of facilities, tenants mix and management. It's like comparing a cat to a tiger. Sorry for the frank comment :)

Agree..!! but nevertheless, I am still happy that Ormoc has this kind of big & one of the well known commercial establishment in the country today. The area is quite large naman para mag-expand at para mahimong full scale mall in the future that can accomodate more tenants & entertainment facilities.

Leyte gets investment
(http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Corporate&title=Other-Stories&id=42128)

TACLOBAN CITY -- Northern Access Mining, Inc. will invest around P80 million in the construction of a magnetite sand facility in the town of Tolosa, Leyte, next year.Silvestre Jeric E. Lapan, general manager, told BusinessWorld they have secured about 90% of the required regulatory permits for the construction of their facility. “We just need the final mining permit. Our commitment to the people is we won’t start as long we’re not complete with the necessary permits,” he said in an interview. The company completed exploratory activities in the towns of Tolosa, Dulag, Julita, and Tabontabon in Leyte last month. Exploratory activities in the town of Tanauan, however, were suspended because of a resolution issued by the Tanauan municipal government disallowing mining activities in the area. Mr. Lapan said they were optimistic that they would be able to resume activities in Tanauan soon because the area is covered by its mineral production sharing agreement.

Mining firm to build plant in Tolosa, Leyte (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/tacloban/local-news/2011/11/23/mining-firm-build-plant-tolosa-leyte-192146)

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

TOLOSA, Leyte -- A junior mining firm will proceed with the construction of a plant in this town next year after completing the exploration for magnetite sand in four Leyte towns last month, a company official said.

The official said they have temporarily stopped their operation this month since they are done exploring all covered areas except the town of Tanauan, where the local government unit issued a resolution disallowing any mining activities.

In an earlier disclosure, Lapan said Nami will invest up to P600 million for their full operation in five Leyte towns. This year, the firm’s initial investment was P300 million.

The mineral production sharing agreement (MPSA) allows Nami to explore 50 mining blocks covering the municipalities of Tanauan, Tolosa, Dulag, Julita, and Tabontabon, all in Leyte.

The company started their exploration for magnetite sand in 2008 with an investment of P200 million. The target is to produce 1.2 million tons per year of titano-magnetite iron ore.

TACLOBAN CITY – Kalanggaman Island in Palompon town will banner Leyte’s tourism promotion efforts for 2012 and highlight the area as a prime tourist destination in the province.

Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, who recently toured the island, said the province will support promotional efforts of the local government unit of Palompon to attract more local and foreign tourists to the area.

However, Gov. Petilla said the province’s role would be to invite investor to finance construction of more tourism facilities as well as develop the area to draw more tourists and visitors.

“We know that developing the area would cost a lot for the LGU. Interested investors would be a big help,” Gov. Petilla said.

Palompon’s Kalanggaman Island and Tabuk Marine Park and Bird Sanctuary is part of Leyte’s Northern Alliance for tourism promotion which, together with Canigao Island in Matalom, Digyo Island in Inopacan, Seven Island Destination in Tabango and Baybay City, are being primed as major eco-tourism spots in Leyte.

The governor however warned the Palompon LGU to maintain Kalanggaman’s environmental richness and not to disturb its natural surroundings.

Overcrowding the island with tourists would not equate to sustainable tourism, he said.

Kalanggaman Island boasts of clear turquoise water surrounded by white sand with some rocky part. The eastern and western tips are sandbars that blend well with the color of the water. Dwarf coconut trees are scattered in the center, while rich and colorful marine life is resting underneath.

Tourist Police have already been deployed to the area through the Leyte Norte PNP Provincial Command to provide security to the tourist populace and to ensure their safety. A Tourist Assistance Desk has also been established to readily answer inquiries and respond to request for police assistance. (AHLETTE C. REYES)

I read some post that most of Malapascua visitors reaches up to Kalanggaman Island just to hop and enjoy the sand bar. Siguro nga minutes ride lang ng banca ang layo ng Malapascua Island at Kalanggaman Island.

Ormoc to give P1.5M aid to Valencia, CDO, Iligan (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=761719&publicationSubCategoryId=530)
By Edgar Allan Vilbar (The Freeman) Updated December 24, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

ORMOC CITY, Philippines — Mayor Eric Codilla yesterday announced that the city government had approved the release of P1.5 million in calamity assistance to the local governments of Valencia in Negros Oriental and the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, the hardest hit areas by typhoon Sendong.

The money, divided at P500,000 each, will be delivered by Monday either personally or through the bank account of the recipient LGU, adding that he already contacted Valencia town Mayor Enrique Gonzales and will be informing the other mayors also about the Ormoc assistance.

Codilla meanwhile told The FREEMAN that the city government would be distributing this week the P25,000 cash gift to each of its 1,040 regular and casual employees.

He further announced that his administration is now ready for the bidding of the construction of the P40-million hospital in Brgy San Pablo to provide a centralized health services for constituents of all barangays in the city.

The hospital will have a laboratory, pharmacy, three operating rooms, 10 private rooms and wards for indigent patients, as well as a center for outpatients, Codilla added. (FREEMAN)

DTI So Leyte expects more economic activity with opening of wildlife park in Maasin City

by ES Gorne

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Dec 6 (PIA) -- The future looks rosy for Maasin City when the wildlife park opens in March next year. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Southern Leyte expects the creation of service oriented establishments that would cater to the needs of guests coming to the area.

DTI provincial director Micheal Nunez noted that the park will serve as magnet for tourists particularly in the Danao Forest Park in Barangay Malapoc Norte in Maasin City.
Nunez said that since the location of the animal park is 20 kilometers (km) from Maasin City, there is a need for business establishments to open like restaurants, souvenir shops, and such, to cater to the visitors.
He is also anticipating the construction of more hotels at the downtown area and the plying of transportation to accommodate the expected influx of tourists in the city.
With the wildlife park, Nunez also sees agricultural activity perking up as there would be more demand for supply of food. This, he avers, is an opportunity for the locals to produce more food and agri products.

Nunez said that the animal park is the second of four tourism hubs that the Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce, Inc (SLCCI) have identified for the province of Southern Leyte.

Meanwhile, Maasin City Mayor Maloney Samaco stated that the animal park shall be known as the Maasin Nature and Wildlife expected to operate by March 2011. (ESG-PIA SoLeyte)

Sana mag improve ang traffic sa Ormoc. Masyadong masikip ang mga streets for years now. Katapos dapat i re-route yung mga tryke kasi masyado na silang nakakacongest sa mga streets. If it will happen, for sure mas magiging maginhawa at maaliwalas ang streets ng Ormoc.
