Thanks for the aerial photos of Ormoc - the Cleanest and Greenest City of Leyte. I can also see a part of my home district of Ipil , about 5 minutes south of Ormoc.

Singaporean Investors to Start Work on MacArthur Park Beach Resort Hotel this May

TACLOBAN CITY - Singaporean investors that has recently earned the approval of the provincial government of Leyte is set to start rehabilitation works on the MacArthur Park Beach Resort Hotel - the formerly Philippine Tourism Authority run hotel that was turned over to the province of Leyte last January.

The Singaporean conglomerate, Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla said is the same Singaporean investor that acquired ownership of the idle five-star Mayon International Hotel in Legazpi City and refurbished it to its grand operation.

The Legazpi hotel reportedly cost the investors some P350 million for its rehabilitation.

All the present buildings that houses the 43-room MacArthur Park Resort Hotel, it was learned, would be knocked down to give way to a new rising building with investors pouring in at least P300 million to fund the rehabilitation cost.

The governor disclosed the new investor on the MacArthur Hotel is poised to start rehabilitation works on May 1 this year.

"The investors would have wanted to start operations sooner; however, the province had to beg off for a later date since there were already some bookings for the hotel this summer. So, we settled them off to start in May," Gov. Petilla said.

In his recent visit to the MacArthur Park Beach Resort Hotel, the governor informed its present staff of this eventuality while saying that even with the private investor coming in to take over the hotel, they would still become a priority in forming the new staff to man the newly rehabilitated hotel under the new management.

To recall, all of the 50 regular and three casual employees hired by the PTA were placed under the provincial government after the latter formally took over of the resort in January.

The 43-room MacArthur Park Beach Resort is considered among the two top hotels in Eastern Visayas. The other is Leyte Park Resort.

However, it was learned form the governor, the hotel has been continually on the losing end for a number of years now with loss amounting to or more or less P500,000 in a month's operation.

"Rather than face its eventual closure, the provincial government has to come in and help. But since the province cannot altogether handle such a big fund for rehabilitation work, we have to invite private investors who are willing to invest in this facility," the governor added.

The hotel, named after the legendary American general who helped liberate the country from Japanese invaders, was built on a three-hectare lot owned by the provincial government.

Meron sanang drive-thru. I recommended to them a vacant lot in Real across Big Roy's resto owned by Jose Luis Tan. Unfortunately the plan was overtaken by the opening of new branches in Tacloban's malls that have been prioritized by Williard Chan. They're even short of managers and supervisors for their new branches.:)

Actually bad trip sa mga empleyado ang privatization ng MacArthur. When they were under PTA, their pay was government standard which was the highest in the industry. Now that they're under the province, their salaries are always delayed. They're expecting the worst when it's fully privatized.

as far as i know (correct me if i'm wrong) it's been sequestered by the PCGG and leased to Wilson Chan. The provincial and city gov'ts also has stakes in it (so part owners sila).

Ganun din eh. Dilapidated na din yung ibang buildings ng Leyte Park. May elevator pero sira. I dont know kung inayos na nila ngayon. Yung gusto ko lang dun yung San Pedro Bay

maganda kung yan ang bagong location ng jollibee...cguro yan ang magiging pinakamaliking branch ng jbee sa tacloban, malaki kasi ung lot na yan...investment wise cguradong patok yan sa mga tao kasi malapit sa school, sa park, sa church, malapit pa sa amp theater :)

Right now it's the province that takes care of their salaries and I don't think it is financially ready and capable of running a hotel. Add to that the millions lost by Leyte in IRA because of Tacloban's HUChood. Until MacArthur becomes a major income earner, it will remain a liability to the province. That's why the employees' salaries are always late.

TACLOBAN CITY - Plans are currently being laid on the table as the provincial government is set to capitalize on the bigger growth of the ICT industry in the province to fuel economic growth.

This through a plan to expand infrastructure inside the Leyte ICT Park which is presently occupied by several ICT industry players, including the newly-opened APAC Customer Service Inc. and other local technology-based enterprise.

According to Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, the expansion plan is specifically for additional buildings to house more locators.

“After APAC, I would like to invite again and I think I could invite more to locate at the Leyte ICT Park. However, before we can even invite more, we should have a place to show our investors that this is actually the place they can locate their companies in,” Gov. Petilla said.

He said his talks with some top officials of the business process outsourcing in the country reveals that BPO and ICT business would still be brisk this year despite the global economic slowdown.

Leyte, he said, has become an alternative hub for provincial expansion of BPO and ICT players because of its existing fiber optic connections, a good education system with 5,000 to 8,000 graduates every year, and incentives from the local government.

The BPO and ICT Industry is known as the “Sunrise Industry” of the country, due to the fact that this industry has brought in millions of dollars in investment from foreign companies, while creating several thousand jobs in the process.

The governor said with ICT coming in expansion of both upstream and downstream industries are seen like telecommunications, food, real estate, construction, electronics, transportation, entertainment and lifestyle businesses.

Lives and destinies of the people in the other provinces such as Cebu, Davao and Negros are actually changing dramatically for the better with the entry of ICT players, and Leyte, Gov. Petilla stressed, can duplicate that.

“All these have to be sustained by further strengthening the ICT sector. I have already made initial talks with the board members on this plan,” the governor disclosed.

He added that the Leyte ICT Park as well as its nearby areas possesses great potentials, not only as an IT destination, but as an alternative business hub that could beef up economic activities in the province and the region. (AHLETTE C. REYES)

Yesterday I chanced upon a cocktail mini-fashion show at Centrum. It turned out to be the opening salvo of Weddings & Beyond exhibit. The mini-fashion show featured creations by in-house designers of Bong's Wedding Essentials & More like cocktail and casual wear as well as evening gowns.

The exhibit cum seminar-workshop will culminate on a grand dinner fashion show featuring the bridal collection of Bong Allosa to be worn by Cebu and Manila models on Mar. 29 at Superdome. Here are some shots I took at the opening.

Wow high fashion in Ormoc? I couldnt believe my eyes seeing the photos and knowing that really haute couture fashion is growing by leaps and bounds in Ormoc. Just goes to show how progressive the city is. Actually, I think an industry in fashion will thrive in Ormoc because of the preponderance of rich - muy buena haciendero familias in the city and its environs, not to mention a growing number of middle class families who can easily afford the luxury.

Is the designer from Ormoc? I know somebody from the Larrazabal clan , third generation actually who has a fashion boutique in their family owned Ormoc Villa Hotel. She does the designing and executes the designs of the dresses, gowns as well. She tells me the business is thriving with a good local customer base.

Thanks for the pictures. Makes me miss the city where I grew up. Hopefully more pics of the cleanest and greenest city in Leyte that is Ormoc will be posted in the forum.

^^ Good thing for Ormoc. Aside from being a land of sugar barons and baroness ,it has close proximity to Cebu City,which is a vantage point because anything mundane to fashion is just within reach,so they easily get caught up with the latest craze or what have you.

Dont we have that here? I have yet to see a Fashion diva around here. Im not sure if the social scene (by the alta sociedad,the old rich - the sophisticated creme de la creme) here is active.

Tacloban observes Earth Hour on March 28

Tacloban City -- Tacloban City is scheduled to join the city of Manila and other cities in Europe, America and Asia in observing Earth Hour by switching off lights for 60 minutes, from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening of March 28.

The activity is spearheaded by the JCI-Candahug Liberation together with the Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas and World Wildlife Foundation, in order to help promote actions to reduce pollution and wasteful exploitation and consumption of resources and energy..

JCI member Bonifacio V. Hernandez Jr., project chairman, said that the participation of the residents of Tacloban City will go a long way in spreading the message that "we as an individual droplets working together collectively, can create an impetus far more powerful that the mightiest rivers."

He called on the people of Tacloban to participate by switching off their lights on March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening, to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming, the greatest threat the earth has ever faced.

In connection with the Earth Hour, a Walk for a Cause and Bicycle Ride will be conducted right after the switching off of lights at the Tacloban City Convention Center. Both means of transportation are environment friendly and will improve the health of the people, Mr. Hernandez said.

The assembly time is at 7:00 o'clock in the evening at Tacloban City Astrodome. The route will be from the Astrodome to Real St., Avenida Veteranos, Rizal Avenue, Justice Romualdez to Balyuan Ampitheater.

At the Balyuan Ampitheater, a "Tugtugan para sa kalikasan" concert will be conducted as a culminating activity for the significant event.

This is the second year that Tacloban joined the Earth Hour. Tacloban is the second city of the Philippines to join the world-wide activity. The first city to participate is Manila.

Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businessmen, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis.

About 1,858 cities, towns and municipalities in 81 countries of the world have already committed to participate in the Earth Hour 2009 as part of the world's global demonstration to save the earth against global warming.

TACLOBAN CITY – Despite a recession gripping many countries in the world, residents of Eastern Visayas continue to opt for foreign jobs as shown by the number of applicants for passports, the Regional Consular Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Eastern Visayas said.

Anne Maris Estoya, administrative assistant of the Regional Consular Office, said her office received 1,924 applications for passports in January and another 2,100 in February.

More than 80 percent of the applicants cited employment abroad as the reason for securing passports, Estoya said on Wednesday.

“Based on our interviews with the applicants, they were applying for passports so that they could work abroad. There are not much job opportunities in the country nowadays so they are seeking employment outside the country,” she said.

One of the passport applicants, 45-year-old “Enerio,” who declined to give his full name, said that while he did not want to leave his family, he had no option but to try his luck in Saudi Arabia.

“Nowadays, it’s better for us all to be realistic and stop being emotional in order for us to survive. Of course, I will miss my wife and children but they know the reason why I have to leave them,” he said.

nope..iba2x ang nag-mamanage ng theresian schools.. iba lang ang management STCDCFI, iba lang ang STEFTI at iba lang ang STECL-which is a cooperative school..

STECL - own by parents and teachers (i think not sure)

OT: lumipat lng aq sa STEFTI nung gr.6 because nagkakagulo na sa STCDC at tsaka bago lng na tayo ang STEFTI..no offense to STCDC pero marami na kasing hnd maganda ang nangyari sa STCDC nung time na yun kya inilipat aq ng lola ko sa new management..basta long story..

di naman nakiki compete ung STCDC sa kanila, ang natatandaan ko ung STECL na skul may basbas un galing sa STCDC, in fact STCDC was a co-founder ng STECL but ung deal lang eh di nila hahawakan ung STECL kundi ang maghahawak isang cooperative...sa STEFTI naman no comment ako dun, ewan ko lang kung naayos na nila ung mga differnces nila :)

If that's not the case, then the premise is still justified that they are competing with each other.. 3 fragmented institutions using the same patron saint in itself (Reps ipsa loquitor - or the thing speaks for itself) is a manifestation of competition.. Siguro nga all of us have personal biases of our own alma maters that's why our natural tendency is to defend our school. In my case however, I have been very close to the 3 schools that's why ganun nalang ang frustration ko....

@ Japogz: It's premature to tell.. We should not generalize the entire institution just because the mistakes of few.. STCDC is not father bart, in the same way as STEFTI is not Palami, and STECL is mam barrot... It's really frustrating that some people in the administration are using the funds coming from the benefactors for their own personal gain..
oo nga totoo yan.. sabagay,mga bata pa nman kmi nung mga time na yun kaya hnd pa gaanong aware sa mga nangyayari..anyway, natatawa lng aq nung highskul aq kasi nagd.debate mga clasm8s ko about STEFTI & STCDC..xmpre nagcoconverge sa STECL ang mga STCDC & STEFTI students since wala pang highskul ang 2 skuls at that time..

Balit, enough for st. therese issues.. Let's leave the gulo to the very persons who created them.. It's just sad to witness that their students, at their young age, tinuturuan na nila na mag-away2x.. we should remember that we are still THERESIANS.. the important thing lang is the LESSONs and VALUES that they have imparted on us, and not the school per se..
yes, closed naman yan actually na issue.. nag move-on na ang mga theresian skuls..hnd naman tinuturuan ang mga students makipag away..it's just that cguro, the students are concerned or aware of the situations kaya tendency,nag dedebate sa mga observations nila or nalalaman nila..basta keep going theresians! move forward!
