Didn't you know that this terminal is bigger than Dipolog? And yes it doesn't need a new look because its big already. I might agree if they need a facelift but capacity wise, the terminal is handling it pretty smooth around 45 percent sunrise-sundown.
There was indeed previous proposal to relocate the airport but it died a natural death due to proximity issues. Cebu and Bacolod. Besides, Dumaguete is big enough to accommodate the A320 or B737 so not much of a worry there other than the Acasia tree down west.
But the relocation site is already identified down south for the eventuality however there is no major plan as of this date to move because the airport is adequate for the next 15 years. Probably they are waiting for the traffic to grow more before the option becomes viable.
Right now the government is only developing airports it intend to open to Asian traffic by 2015 when the Asean open skies take effect. In Visayas, those are Puerto Princesa, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu and Tacloban. Kalibo was actually an anomaly because it was open on the insistence of the Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese government in exchange for more flights to their Country. And since Korea is not part of Asean, they will operate under a different treaty, meaning Singapore Airlines or AirAsia can't fly to Kalibo but Korean Air or China Airlines can.:)
Marni April 22nd, 2009, 01:00 PM So magkakaroon na tayo ng International flights by 2015? YES! Dream come true! SO Shall we call it TIA (Tacloban International Airport) or DZR International Airport? Grabe na ini yana. Paspasay na gud it paguswag hit syudad! Padayon Tacloban!

urban Iegend April 22nd, 2009, 03:54 PM Preparations underway for Sangyaw Festival in June
by OMA-Jose Rodriguez T. Senase

http://www.tacloban.gov.ph/news.php
TACLOBAN CITY - Preparations are underway for the holding of the Sangyaw Festival of Tacloban City from June 12-29 this year.
In an interview Tuesday, Events Coordinator Malou Tabao disclosed that the City Tourism Council and the Tacloban Sangyaw Foundation are already busy making preparations for the upcoming Festival.
`Series of meetings have already been conducted to finalize plans for a series of activities to be held in connection with the celebration,` Tabao disclosed.
Among the activities that will be held as part of the festival are Street Dancing Competition, Fluvial Parade, Search for Miss Tacloban, Little Miss Tacloban 2009, Balikbayan Night, concerts by local and Manila-based bands and other socio-cultural activities.
`Aside from that, the Balyuan Amphitheater and other possible venues have been improved in anticipation of the upcoming events,` she added.
Tabao further stated that the City Government had already sent invitations to other cities, municipalities and provinces in the country to participate and compete in the Sangyaw Festival.
Among the places that have been invited to participate in the Festival are the municipality of Dulag (Leyte) province of Sorsogon; and the cities of Makati, Bais, Cadiz, Legazpi, Isabela (Basilan), Bacolod and Marikina.
`We are just awaiting their confirmation. I believe that more contingents from other parts of the country will join this year`s festival,` Tabao stressed.
Last year`s celebration was participated in by Tribu Kabatuk and five cultural contingents from the cities of Cebu, Marikina, Makati, Isabela and Bacolod.
Started in 1974 and a brainchild of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Sangyaw was revived last year by Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez after being sidelined for more than 20 years.
Organizers headed by City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez are very optimistic that the activity will bring many benefits to the city this year in terms of increased tourist arrivals and more economic activities.

TACLOBAN CITY - Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho “Icot” Petilla is optimistic that the holding of the Palarong Pambansa here in the province of Leyte would be successful as expected.
This despite some odds that are being encountered by the province of Leyte together with the Department of Education (DepEd) in the region relative to the hosting of this national sporting event held annually.
Particularly, some of these problems have to do with the conflict between the local leaderships of the city government of Tacloban and the province of Leyte.
It can be noted that some people from the city government of Tacloban have been lambasting the governor for choosing to host the Palaro than to focus on the programs for the poor, especially nowadays when the global financial crisis is already at hand.
Lately, some Palaro-related streamers also bearing the names and faces of the governor and the regional director of DepEd and the department’s Secretary that have been placed in strategic and conspicuous areas in the city have been allegedly detached by people from the city government accordingly due to lack of necessary permits.
However, in spite all these the governor of the province of Leyte have remained calm and assured that all things will go well and that the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa would run smoothly as planned.
“I can assure you that the Palaro will be successful,” Petilla stressed in a recent interview with the media.
Petilla said that it would be the entire region that will be benefited with the holding of this Palarong Pambansa here.
According to him, it is not only about the improvement of sports facilities but it is also about introducing the region to the whole country.
“That’s why I urge other local officials in the region to cooperate and support the holding of the Palaro because it would be for our own good and not for Leyte province only,” Petilla said.
“We will try to make this one successful because we want to let the other parts of the country know that we exist,” Petilla added.
Petilla also emphasized that this event is giving hope to the local constituents at least in the field of sports which he said is priceless.
The governor also hinted that the minor problems being encountered such as water, billeting areas and others would be addressed accordingly as planned.

things i noticed about tacloban:
- Gaisano sucks. the place is dirty, and unfinished. or if that's their idea of "finished", the engineers seriously need to be fired.
- The Airport sucks. The new airport seriously needs to be finished already because the lounge/boarding area is most of the time crowded. i couldn't even get a seat.

Dino Balabo, Philippine Star
MALOLOS CITY, Philippines – A security guard of SM City Baliuag who dreams of becoming a police officer found and returned a clutch bag containing P2.4 million worth of checks and P35,000 in cash last Friday.
Trinidad Quintana, 27, who has worked for the RDC Security Agency for only four months, told The STAR in a phone interview that he was on a routine check at the mall’s food court when he saw the clutch bag on a table.
He said he initially kept watch on the clutch bag, thinking that its owner might have gone to the comfort room. With nobody taking it after a few minutes, he then asked a couple on another table if it was theirs.
Since its owner apparently had already left, Quintana took the clutch bag and brought it to his office.
Beverly Cruz, public relations officer of SM City Baliuag, said the clutch bag contained at least seven checks worth P2.4 million, P35,000 in cash and other valuables.
The bag was later returned to its owner, a certain Matias Cruz.
When asked why he returned the bag, Quintana said it was not his and it’s part of his job to do so.
Quintana added that his parents had taught him to be honest, explaining that he felt good after the owner got the bag.
The SM City Baliuag management commended Quintana for his honesty.
The third of nine siblings from Leyte, Quintana aspires to become a police officer. He finished his Bachelor of Science in Criminology at the Tacloban-Leyte Colleges in 2007, but failed to pass the examination given by the National Police Commission when was in his junior year.
Last year, he again took the exam and is now waiting for the results.

Gov. Petilla says Shoe Mart declines to invest in Leyte
By: Miriam Garcia Desacada - Staff Writer
TACLOBAN CITY – Leyte Governor Jericho “Icot” Petilla confirmed that Shoe Mart,” a widely known mall in the country, is not yet ready to invest in Leyte after conducting a series of studies and negotiating with the provincial government.
Petilla however, did not elaborate the reasons about the decision of the SM Company, but the provincial government is looking to amore serious and high-profile selling mission and investment promotions.
He told reporters that since the intention of the SM to invest in Leyte did not materialize the provincial government is negotiating with the Gokongwei and Ayala group of company which recently visited Leyte to assess and study the viability of establishing malls.
The governor also said the groups of investors have already expressed interest to invest or establish a mall in Leyte.
It was clarified by the governor himself that they are targeting the grandstand area, as it’s more accessible to the public, but also said he is still offering the Candahug area where the provincial government is willing to sacrifice for the good of the public.
In the event the said mall operators will decide to occupy the Leyte Sports Development Center he assures that part of the important negotiation to be agreed is for operators to put another sports center for the city.
“We are actually looking for what is good for the majority, we are still open for negotiation with those investors,” Petilla said.
Petilla added that the provincial government of Tacloban City and Leyte is moving in the right direction, but pointed out that they cannot force businessmen to invest in Leyte because they are more concerned about profit.

TACLOBAN CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would personally welcome the more than 10,000 young athletes from the country’s 17 administrative regions on the opening of the Palarong Pambansa on Tuesday.
Aside from attending this year’s Palarong Pambansa, the President would hold a Cabinet meeting and lead in the ground-breaking ceremony of the rehabilitation of the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport, said Philippine Information Agency Regional Director Olive Tiu.
The President is expected to arrive here in the city around 9 a.m. Tuesday and she would immediately proceed to the Leyte Sports Development Center (Grandstand), the site of the annual sports event involving elementary and high school students.
“We are now ready for the opening of the Palarong Pambansa,” Tiu said.
A grand cultural presentation involving hundreds of students would be among the highlights of the opening ceremonies of this year’s Palarong Pambansa, the first to be staged in the region in 26 years.
The provincial government of Leyte is this year’s host of the Palarong Pambansa, where the powerhouse National Capital Region is expected to dominate again as it tries to defend its crown both in the elementary and secondary divisions.
Elimination rounds of some games, however, are to begin today, Monday, to be held outside the newly-refurbished LSDC, said Editha Jacer of the regional office of the Department of Education’s consultant to the Palarong Pambansa.
She said that games at the LSDC would start right after the formal opening. “Some of the games will be played outside the Grandstand,” she said.
Among the venues for the Palarong Pambansa outside of the Grandstand are the gymnasium of the DepEd regional office; convention center of the Leyte Park Hotel; in Palo and at the Government Center.
“We are now ready for the Palaro. Security measures are also in place now,” Jacer said.
Tiu said that after the President’s speech on Tuesday, all the athletes from the competing 17 regions would join a parade which is to start at the Grandstand sneaking their way to Veteranos, Rizal, Justice Romualdez and to Balyu-an Amphitheater where they would be picked up by their respective service vehicles to their billeting quarters.
Competitions using the Grandstand as the venue would commence in the afternoon, Tiu said.
Meantime, the PIA-8 chief said that after her speech at the Palarong Pambansa opening, the President would motor her way to DZR Airport where she would preside a Cabinet meeting.
President Arroyo would also lead in the ground-breaking of the long-delayed rehabilitation of DZR Airport which is estimated to cost P4.1 billion, Tiu said.

Hay,TV 5,not the national network but the local affiliate. I saw their coverage kanina. There were no commentators but only music playing on the background. Same goes with An Aton Channel 24. Just raw live footages. You have to strain your ears to hear from the announcer in the foreground to know who won.
