ijun June 12th, 2009, 07:32 AM Mayor Romualdez leads opening of new Jollibee branch
TACLOBAN CITY - Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez led the opening of the newest branch of the fast-food giant Jollibee in this city, Wednesday.
Assisted by Jollibee Vice President for Operations Manuel Yap and other company officials, Mayor Romualdez ceremonially cut the ribbon to formally open the said food outlet to the public.
Located at the Robinsons Mall, the newly-opened Jollibee outlet is the fifth such branch of the fast food giant in the city. Jollibee has already four branches in the city, namely: Jollibee-Zamora, Jollibee-Gomez, Jollibee-Real and JOLLIBEE-GAISANO CENTRAL.
In his message during the short opening program, Mayor Romualdez thanked Jollibee for investing and putting up with another branch in the city. He said that it will help bring more progress and will provide more employment opportunities to people from this city and other parts of the region.
Jollibee Operations Manager Nelia Sasil, speaking in behalf of Jollibee, said that what encouraged them to set up another branch was the “business-friendly” climate and the booming economy of the city.
“This is the manifestation of our trust in the strong economy of the city and the leadership of Mayor Romualdez,” Sasil stressed.
In its initial operation, Jollibee-Robinsons offers products like Jolly Spaghetti, Chickenjoy, milkshakes, apple pie, Yumburger, Jolly Crispy Fries, Champ Premium Burger and some local Filipino dishes.

ijun June 12th, 2009, 08:29 AM Mayor Romualdez to lead blessing of Kanhuraw Business Center
TACLOBAN CITY- City Mayor Alfred Romualdez will lead the blessing of the Kanhuraw Business Center (KBC) in this city, today.
“The conversion of the Kanhuraw Convention Center into a one-stop-shop business center has already been completed. Mayor Romualdez , assisted by other city officials, will be on hand to personally lead the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony,” said KBC administrator-designate Redentor Curate in an interview Tuesday.
Aside from the mayor, also expected to grace the occasion are councilors, department heads, and other officials of the City Government of Tacloban.
“After it is formally opened, the facility will now be operational,” he added.
Curate revealed that once it is operational, bills, payments, and other transactions with respect to the renewing of and applying for business permits will be done there.
A priority of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, the putting up of a one-stop-shop business center is in anticipation of an influx of a lot of investors and business establishments here.
It was noted that the one-stop-shop, with its streamlined and systematic operations, will lessen the time it takes for new investors to apply for permits to do business in the city.
In addition, the establishment of a new one-stop-shop business center is also geared towards an increase in traffic enforcement. Payment of tickets and fines for traffic violations will also be done at the Kanhuraw one-stop-shop, it was learned.
As part of the conversion plan, the city government will transfer some of its offices like the City Licensing Office to said center. (KIMRO-JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE)

There will be 5 stages with 71 rounds. The competition will be participated in by different LGUs in the neighboring towns. (Ronnie C. Roa)

ijun June 12th, 2009, 08:36 AM Establishment of training center in Leyte seen to solve lack of skilled workers
The establishment of Kananga EDC Institute of Technology (KEI Tech) in Barangay Rizal and Hiluctogan, Kananga, Leyte is seen to solve the lack of skilled workers for Energy Development Corp. (EDC). This was according to EDC President & CEO Paul Aquino during the inauguration of KEI Tech.
He said that based on the figures from TESDA, the demand for skills in these areas has been consistently high in both domestic and overseas labor markets. “Dito lang sa aming Leyte Geothermal Production Field, there was a time when we needed around 1,000 welders at a daily rate between P 300- P 500, but we were only able to hire 50, all of whom came from Ormoc City. Aquino revealed that in the next ten years, the offering of KEI Tech will be expanded to 10 areas. As of the present the school offers courses in 3 areas namely, Tourism, Metals and Engineering and Construction.
Aquino said that the idea was hatched in a discussion with Governor Joey Salceda of Albay. According to him, Salceda had said that since Bicol and Visayas regions are both located within the typhoon belt big –time investors would have reservations about putting up industrial and manufacturing plants in those areas. Salceda told Aquino that education is the only viable option. During the occasion he also thanked Mayor Elmer Codilla and Vice Mayor Macario Lumangtad Jr. for agreeing right away when this idea was first broached to them.
KEI Tech envisions to produce world’s greatest nation builders.
Oscar Lopez, EDC chairman said that this is the ardent goal of KEI Tech- to once again breed the next generation of high calibre Filipino manpower that will lead I building world’s biggest and most ambitious projects. “There are at least 10 million Filipinos working abroad and each one is making a difference in his or her chosen field. Search the internet and you will find a Filipino putting his brand of excellence in today’s most important projects” Lopez said.
Lopez said that KEI Tech will teach trainees with world-class skills and proper work ethics and values, “but of course, we would like them to work here in the country first”. He explained that KEI Tech will help address the socio-economic needs at the local level while creating a pool of technically skilled human resources that can be utilized for industrial and services activities here in the country. He also said that finding employment abroad is an option.
“This is the best way we can give back the benefits of our business” Lopez said. He said that his father, the late Eugenio Lopez, Sr. once said that a greater proportion of the earnings accrued from the business should be returned to the people, in form of foundations, grants, scholarships, hospitals, or any other form of social welfare benefits.
“KEI Tech addresses the multi-faceted challenge our nation faces today. KEI Tech will provide educational program for the youth who cannot pursue a college education. They will be taught in a top-notch training center where they will acquire skills they can use in gaining employment in the industrial and services sectors. The institute will also help them find employment opportunities in the local and foreign labor markets. What makes this institute unique is its emphasis on instilling the proper values and work ethics. Being a world class Filipino worker starts with being a values-oriented individual. Lopez explained.” (Gerardo Reyes)

ijun June 12th, 2009, 09:14 AM P1 M counterpart fund released by provl govt for Capoocan KALAHI projects
TACLOBAN CITY - Close a million pesos in counterpart fund was recently released by the provincial government of Leyte for the various identified sub-projects in Capoocan, Leyte under the last phase of the government’s Kapit Bisig laban sa Kahirapan- Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS).
Kalahi-CIDSS is the flagship anti-poverty project of the Arroyo administration with funding from the World Bank and is being implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development with counterparts from the local government units.
Under Cycle 3 of the KALAHI-CIDSS Program in Capoocan town, Gov. Petilla distributed anew financial assistance amounting to more than P969,000 during his recent visit to the town.
Most of the identified sub-projects being implemented are infrastructure projects chosen by the community to help alleviate their lives. Projects such as drainage system, river flood control systems, water systems, footbridge, pathways and sea walls.
Given the financial assistance under Cycle 3 of the Kalahi-CIDSS in Capoocan were Brgy. Balud P158,000 for their drainage system, Brgy. Culasian P141,718, Brgy. San Joaquin P104,605 and Brgy. Potot P87,464 all for their respective river flood control systems projects, Brgy Sto. Niqo P128,258 and Brgy. Manloy P76,846 both for their waster system projects, Brgy. Cabul-an P116,132 for their footbridge and Brgy. Guinadiongan P156,355 for their sea wall project.
According to Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla, while other provincial local government units in the country has been hesitant in accepting the KALAHI-CIDSS program because of its counterparting scheme, Leyte has been more than happy to welcome the project some three years back, saying the provincial government is being aided a lot in implementing these important projects.
KALAHI-CIDDS, the government’s flagship socio-economic program for poverty eradication, has been recognized by the World Bank as one of the best ongoing poverty reduction initiatives in the world.
Moreover, it was learned that the World Bank considers the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as a “major client” and is impressed with its implementation of KALAHI-CIDSS that it expressed support to DSWD’s plan to scale up the program while assuring that “World Bank will provide resources.”
This after positive reports from the KALAHI-CIDSSs Seventh Implementation Review reportedly revealed that the DSWD was assured of a project expansion support during a management meeting with the World Bank.
In the same meeting last month, it was reported that KALAHI-CIDSS “continues to make progress in achieving its overall development objectives as it enters the final stage of implementation on the remaining 83 municipalities.” (AHLETTE C. REYES)

ijun June 12th, 2009, 10:16 AM KEITech gives hope to Kanangas youth
TACLOBAN CITY –Wearing new shoes and uniforms and with a smile on their faces, 120 young students trooped to their designated buildings for their first day of classes on Monday, June 8, in a post-secondary training center in Kananga, Leyte.
The new training center – The Kananga-EDC (Energy Development Corp.) Institute of Technology [KEITech] – has given hope to these deserving students who were unable to pursue their college education mainly due to poverty.
The 3-hectare campus, which has several buildings like the training centers, work shops, dormitories and a multi-purpose building, is in Barangays Rizal and Hiluctugan, which are 5 kilometers away from the town center of Kananga, located about 85 kilometers west of Tacloban City.
Monique Ann Villegas, a 16 years old resident of Poblacion, Kananga town, says she had just graduated from high school last March 23, 2009 and that she never thought that she could continue her studies.
The eldest among a brood of three, Monique says her parents could not afford to send her to college. Her father, who is a farmer and the family’s sole bread winner, only has a meager income, she adds.
Asked what she can say about being admitted to KEITech, Monique says: “Natutuwa ako at saka blessed, kasi hindi talaga ako makakapagaral kung hindi ito (I’m happy and also blessed because I cannot really continue my studies if not for this).”
She is taking up a Tourism course at KEITech.
Like Monique, 17-year-old Ramer Narido also has a farmer as a father but his mother also earns a living as market vendor at the Kananga town proper. However, Ramer says the income of his parents is barely enough for their family.
Ramer belongs to a big family; he is the 10th in the brood of 11. Only Ramer and his younger brother, who is in third year high school, are still studying. Although some of their elder siblings had gotten married, found jobs and are now living in their own houses, Ramer says his parents could still not afford to pay for his college education.
“I’ll try my best to succeed,” vows Ramer, who is taking up a Plumbing course at KEITech.
Monique, Ramer and the rest of the 120 trainees will spend more than 10 months at KEITech, learning skills that would allow them to become “the world’s greatest nation builders.”
In Kananga, which has a 15 percent unemployment rate, only one percent of the high school graduates reportedly proceed to college in order to make a living. Local skills in this town are very limited due to dependence on subsistence farming.
“Karamihan sa atin dito pagka-graduate ng high school, wala na. Hindi na kaya ng parents (Most of us here do not continue our studies after graduating from high school. Our parents can’t afford anymore to send us to college),” says Kananga Mayor Elmer Codilla.
“We are thankful of this (opening of KEITech),” he emphasizes.
During the inauguration of KEITech on June 5, Mayor Codilla readily gave the municipality’s annual share of P4 million as counterpart to EDC’s P4 million annual contribution. The amount will finance KEITech’s operation for a period of three years.
KEITech offers skills training needed in three major sectors: Metals and Engineering, Construction and Tourism, Health and Social Service. Initially, the course offerings in KEITech are plumbing, building wiring installation, masonry, carpentry and tourism.
“In every qualification, there are 24 trainees,” informs Sherryl Talubon, a trainor in plumbing who, like other KEITech trainors, is accredited by the Tesda. She was referring to the first batch of trainees.
KEITech also has a Job Placement Office that would facilitate the employment of certified graduates.
KEITech, a tripartite project of EDC, the Municipality of Kananga and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), is owned and operated by the Kananga-EDC Educational Foundation Inc.
The Foundation is sponsoring KEITech’s first three years of operation. It provides trainees with school supplies, uniforms, reference materials allowance and insurance aside from the modern equipment and facilities that trainees would be using for the entire duration of their training.
And to mold the trainees into becoming the “world’s greatest nation builders,” KEITech has hired 25 trainers and administrative personnel who will closely supervise the first batch of trainees, informs Paul A. Aquino, CEO and President of EDC, the Lopez-owned company that operates the geothermal plants located in Kananga and in Ormoc City.
“But the unique feature of their training – which is often overlooked by other tech-voc schools – will be the extra hours to be devoted to value formation and development of discipline and proper work attitude,” Aquino stresses.
He says that aside from being in demand in the country, there is now a steady global market for skilled technical workers with salaries that can rival those of local professionals.
“With our KEITech, we hope to produce a model that will make voc-tech a highly favorable career path for the youth,” Aquino says.
For Oscar M. Lopez, chair of EDC, the ardent goal of KEITech is “to once again breed the next generation of high-caliber Filipino manpower that will be part, or even lead, in building some of the world’s biggest and most ambitious projects.”
He, however, asked KEITech trainees to share the good things that will come out from their training. “You may not be asked to sign a bond but we are banking on your innate goodness to sponsor another KEITech trainee any time you find gainful employment. In essence we want you to pay it forward. Repay the Foundation by helping other KEITech students.”
The establishment of KEITech, he says, is EDC’s way of giving back to the communities the benefits of their business.
His parting message to the trainees during the inauguration of KEITech was: “”Do well with this opportunity given to you and once again, prove to the whole world that the Filipinos deserve to be placed among the world’s greatest nation builders.”
And this is what Monique, Ramer and the rest of the KEITech trainees intend to do.

ijun June 12th, 2009, 10:40 AM Playphonics Debut Album Launch
June 5, 2009. After almost 6 years in the music scene, 5 years of songwriting and recording, and two years of relocating to Manila from Tacloban city, “chill” rock outfit Playphonics finally release their independent self-titled debut album. Not even the torrential downpour could weigh down the occasion, which was held at Magnet Bonifacio High Street, The Fort Taguig. Notwithstanding the rain, the venue was still packed with long time fans, family and friends from the music industry, the media and the inquisitive regulars alike.
The night kicked off with Pagka-urusa (which is interestingly 2/3 Taclobanon) delivering their own brand of alternative instrumental music with a taste of world and reggae. Kevin Roy (of Razorback fame) blew the crowd away with his intellectual project Loquy (pronounced as low-keeh). After Loquy’s long but engaging set, witty tube siren Tuesday Vargas’ musical alter-ego Top Junk rocked the stage with post-punk image and action. Peryodiko then took the stage with their set of story-telling translations and heartrending melodies.
After much of the nights’ eager waiting, Playphonics graced their turn to fascinate the audience with their live version of south rock sound. Rica Camacho’s vocals are both angelic and evocative. Her pleasing narratives on love and loss are complimented by Hector Cruz’s ambient driven guitar sound and Dandee Grafil’s intense bodily approach to the songs. Reuville Clemecio’s bass lines and Sedfrey Clemencio’s drumming add flair and rhythmic force to what collectively Playphonics’ music is intimately celebrated: chic, unsoiled and the piercing sound of raw emotions yet tender to the senses.
Hailing from Tacloban city, Leyte, Playphonics initially got attention after being nominated in the 2006 annual NU107 Rock Awards In the Raw Award, a category reserved for upcoming independent artists. Since then, the group has set their sights on breaking into manila’s indie rock music scene and has regularly performed in the area’s premium music venues. They have shared stages with the country’s top artists in annual events such as the Fete de la Musique, and the seven day music festival at the U.P. Fair. They have also been featured in choice music and trend publications such as Pulp and Candy magazine.
Their self-titled album contains 9 all-original, chart certified tracks. Critically acclaimed from their gut-wrenching first single Pagbigyan, the yearning hymn of Stolen, to the inspiring anthem Free, this release also features their current single Bagong Mundo, which strongly held the number one spot in RJ105.9 Underground Radio’s daily charts for two weeks and running. One of their album’s cuts, April and the Odor of Strawberries, is a close collaboration with Radioactive Sago Project’s Lourd De Veyra, who penned the lyrics of the song. The album is produced by renowned session musician and studio guru Louie Talan, who has been significantly involved with the band’s growth, maturity, and creative direction.
Playphonics have been a familiar name in the independent music scene for more than two years now, but their live sets never fail to surprise audiences, given their natural simplicity. One can’t also help but notice their ability to carry a sense of different musical tastes in one package. That night of talented sundry acts, Playphonics clearly owned the stage. Theirs is a reflection of resolve, diversity and talent walking hand in hand to achieve and share inspired gratification. Their creative merit is a testament to the undiscovered artistry and capacity of musicians from the undisclosed provinces in the Philippines. (Abe Billano)

ijun June 12th, 2009, 10:45 AM EVSU produces summer culinary trainees
For idle minds, ten to eleven days will be fleeting but for those who wish to gain knowledge, discover talents, hone skills or invest for a possible fortune in the field of entrepreneurship, that span of time can be enough to start on something. That’s how it is in crash courses on technology dished out to committed trainees in government academic institutions, like the Eastern Visayas State University .
Last Saturday, the latest batch of basic food technology trainees of EVSU had their simple graduation ceremonies attended by the EVSU Extension Services Dept. head Prof. Imelda Abenio, the school’s BSHRM head Dr. Hilaria Bustamante and the batch cooking/baking instructor Prof. Nazarena Nacario-Aguirre, an Extension Services Coordinator of the university. All the successful trainees were given the chance to express their impression about the summer culinary experience while the guests gave inspiring messages during the culminating activity.
During the hands-on training, enrollees were provided inputs on how to better prepare their selves for the challenging task of cooking or baking and presenting the finished product in the most appealing way they could. The training included free use of the school facilities and utensils and endless of opportunity to learn more from the instructor about culinary.
First step to success
A travel to a thousand miles begins with a single step. This age-old principle in life holds true in crash courses like the culinary trainings offered by private and government institutions. From an absence or paucity of knowledge about the training enrolled to a grasp of at least the kernel of what he is into, an enthusiast can start accomplishing his dream. It could set the start of a successful endeavor.
Dr. Bustamante exhorted the trainees to keep on doing what they have learned or apply the knowledge in their day to day to life. With a conviction that constant practice will make the skill perfect, she encouraged them saying, “Hone your talent if it is in your heart and mind and you will go far beyond this,” referring foremost to a chance of developing one’s skills for business advantage.
Prof. Abenio joined in this remark, expressing hope that after the short-term course, the trainees will continue practicing what they have learned for productive ends. She underscored the economic benefit that the trainees could get from the training by earning additional income thru business venture. She stressed too the need to give importance to client feedback in order to improve their business and develop good human relations as critical factor in achieving success.
She likewise called on them to learn the art of compassion while exploring where one’s vocation is and try to transfer such skill to other people as way of sharing the God-given talent to humanity.
EVSU’s Hotel and Restaurant Technology department has been reaping citations from the Technical-Vocational Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as well as other institutions for yielding highly competitive students who excel in related fields. This is not far to occur as could be gathered from the professors’ advices. Especially now that the world has become very competitive, EVSU HRM and Extension Services officials encourage their trainees to delve into other related disciplines and be multi-skilled.
Among other trainings that EVSU HRT professors could provide are on food styling or designing, table skirting, bartending and cake decorating. Majority of EVSU HRM students oftentimes pass the TESDA National Certification competency tests.
Prof. Aguirre, who has shown much devotion to her vocation, emphasized in her talk that the fee paid by the trainees to the university was simply a commitment fee to ensure their dedication to the training. She had to extend her time in school if ever necessary or requested by the trainees, especially those trying to learn cake decorating, just to make them learn the techniques. Being in the Extension Services Unit of EVSU Planning, Research and Extension Services Department, Aguirre considers herself as an “on call” professor.
Both a science and art
Cooking and baking are not simply learning how to cook or bake and make the food taste well.
As Dr. Bustamante describes it, food technology is both science and art. Science because of the principles involved in food preparation. “You will later realize that in every category there is specific science involved,” she said.
Art is due to the aesthetic aspect of presenting food on the table. Food styling, color combination and the cut of food, such as the vegetables have their artistic value, according to the culinary experts.
This is what the trainees have actually learned in the five weekends they had in the summer culinary class. Cooking as well as baking entail order and precision.
“Do not start unless everything is measured and utensils assembled,” Prof. Aguirre repeatedly reminded the trainees. Overdoing the procedure may only do injustice to the recipe, although as the professor admitted since no recipe is perfect it could be modified.
Reason to thank it for
Gratitude was a common utterance that emanated from the mouth of all the successful trainees. The know-how imparted to them and the vital tips for good cooking and baking gained thru this almost-free training parceled out to them was more than enough to be thankful for.
Some of the trainees have started taking orders from customers while others have begun their business even while the training was on-going. The knowledge acquired through the training helped them improve their abilities which they developed way back in their high school and elementary years.
Gianna Kristine Nazareno, the youngest in the batch learned the basic rule in culinary: not to be dependent on the recipe and consider it only as guide that can be improved to suit the taste of the consumers. She also has taken upon herself to consider food presentation in her mini-livelihood in school, selling food to her classmates during vacant time. Like her other classmates, she thanked her instructor for the patience and selflessness in providing basic inputs to them.
The professors congratulated all the seven trainees who successfully completed the requirement of the crash course. They are encouraged to take the Commercial Cooking NCII Competency Test at TESDA to be world competitive. By Eileen N. Ballesteros

ijun June 12th, 2009, 10:57 AM Exhibit of Sto. Niño images going on at Hotel Alejandro
TACLOBAN CITY — An exhibit of Sto. Niño relics dubbed as the “Ladawan han Santo Niño ha mga Tawo” opened recently at the Hotel Alejandro, this city.
Alex Montejo, proprietor of Hotel Alejandro and one of the sponsors of the exhibit, said the display was put up as part of the National Heritage Month celebration.
He added that the reasons of putting up the exhibit were to express tribute to Jesus Christ who is popularly venerated in the child-image of the Santo Niño in Tacloban City and many other communities in Leyte and to enhance the appreciation of the faithful and other audiences for the historico-cultural and artistic value of the Sto. Niño images as religious heritage artifacts.
The exhibit features more than 20 Sto. Niño images and icons owned by the Almeria, Capuccion, Urbina, Repulda-Atillo, Reyes, and Sardin families; Ernest Montejo, Holy Infant College (HIC), and the Tanauan Parish of our Lady of Assumption.
Among them is the “Replica of Sto. Niño El Kapitan,” which was commissioned by former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos and donated to government offices in Leyte. The image, which is made of wood, gold, and thread- embroidered vestments with gold leaf, was the tallest icon among the exhibits.
The exhibit is also sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and Arts, Filipino Heritage Festival, Inc., Leyte Heritage Society, Archdiocese of Palo, University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban Campus (UPVTC), and the Sto. Niño Parish.
The exhibit, which is free to the public, will run until June 30 this year. (Jose Rodriguez T. Señase)

2009/06/12
Over 5,000 receive P12,078,000 worth of PGMA's CLEEP at Kalayaan 2009 in Region 8
Tacloban City (June 12) -- During the 111th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, some 5,011 Eastern Visayans were happy beneficiaries to the awarding of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) projects amounting to P12,078,000.00, from Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs, Secretary Gabriel Claudio, at the Tacloban City Convention Center.
Job contracts and certificates of employment from 42 government agencies and two local government units, were awarded to about 1702 beneficiaries by the Guest of Honor who is also the CLEEP steward for Eastern Visayas.
About 900 young Eastern Visayans happily received their Pangulong Gloria Scholarship vouchers from Secretary Claudio who was assisted by PA Cynthia Nierras, and DOLE Director Forter Puguon who was the host of the historic event.
About 2,448 people were the lucky recipients of the livelihood grants from the 17 National Government Agencies and 2 local government units.
This makes the total number of beneficiaries of the various job contracts, scholarships and livelihood grants to about 5,011.
The beneficiaries are from various sectors of society, young people, mature people, ladies and gentlemen, senior citizens, farmers, fisherfolk and many others.
The beneficiaries came from the different provinces of the Region, from Southern Leyte to Northern Samar.
The venue of the commemorative program and Jobs Fair and Service Caravan was the Tacloban City Convention Center which accommodates 5,000 people. At the center are the tables for the recruiters and applicants while along the sides are the booths of the different government agencies participating in the Service Caravan.

mao rong June 12th, 2009, 02:08 PM Residents call for resignation of LMWD manager over water supply
TACLOBAN CITY - Posters calling for the resignation of LMWD Manager Nestor “Ganggang” Villasin pervaded the vicinity of Barangay 69 and 70 the other day, as residents in the area manifested their outrage over the prolonged non-availability of potable water in their barangay.
And complicating the situation even more, the residents said, is the fact, that even if they only were able to consume a few cubic meters in a month, they still are made to pay a bill equivalent to a minimum of 10 cubic meters, which is the minimum monthly charge for a single water concessionaire.
Sounding helpless over this situation, Brgy. 69 Chairman Noel Tabao said in a press briefing that they can only do so much on the matter, as all solutions regarding this problem can only come from the management of the local water utility, the LMWD.
Consequently he said, “All we can do now (barangay officials) at our level is just to tell the people of what Mr. Villasin told us, to wait for a little while. But the matter is the people have gone weary now, and I don’t think I still could hold back their fury over this matter.”
During what seemed to be a protest action shown by residents of both barangays, a woman named Fe Canaber, who felt shortchanged of having made to pay water bills higher than what she actually utilized, openly aired contempt over the tricky billing tactics of the LMWD which she finds injurious to the interest of the consumers and yet being consented to by the management of LMWD.
Enraged of unnecessarily spending for their drinking water which is still bought from the city’s downtown area, professional butcher Edwin Erandio, on the other hand, promised to drive anyone from the water district, purporting to read water meters in their area.
In the same location, however, and perhaps due to the elevation where a certain house is situated, residents are complaining not more on the scarcity of water but on the quality of water that flows out from their faucets.
^^amu ini it dako nga problema ngadi ha tacloban it tubig..ma upay unta nga matuman na sumulod an maynilad nganhi ha syudad para malisang it LMWD (province).asay lugod nira pan pinan hadlok hit mga taga tacloban nga d daw kaya hit city...hay...

i_aM_cArLo_AnGeLo June 12th, 2009, 06:35 PM GOKONGWEI TOP OFFICIAL SAYS Robinsons opening means trust in citys economic potential
http://s718.photobucket.com/albums/ww189/ijun276/?newest=1
OPENING. Former mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez (2nd from left) leads the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon for the opening of Robinson Place Tacloban yesterday together with (L-R) Robinsons Land Corp. President and COO Frederick Go; Rep. Martin “FM” Romualdez; Councilor Cristina Romualdez; Mayor Alfred Romualdez and RLC president James Go and Vice Gov. Mimiette Bagulaya (partly hidden). Toto del Monte
TACLOBAN CITY - The coming in of the Robinsons Malls in the city was a testament of their confidence of its economic potentials.
Thus said Frederick Go, president and chief operations officer of the Robinsons Land Corporation, as its first shopping mall started its business operations yesterday.
He also said that despite of the current economic condition of the country, the company remains bullish of its operations in Tacloban.
This early, the company is already planning for a possible expansion of the present two-storey mall as well as building its own hotel, Go added.
“It’s a great place to do business here. This is just the first phase of our development and subsequently, we’ll be expanding our mall and hotel as well,” he said, adding that this could take place by next year yet.
“(And) we expect that the mall will be doing very well here in Tacloban,” Go added.
The construction of the two-storey Robinsons Malls was started October of last year and was over by May of this year with almost 90 percent of its total leaseable stalls now occupied.
Go said that the operations of the first mid-size mall of the region is expected to generate 3,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
However, the president and chief operations officer of the Robinsons Land Corporation, declined to reveal how much they have invested in the city in building up its 25th malls.
The Robinsons Place-Tacloban, which is located in the Marasbaras area, is its sixth in the entire Visayas.
Also present during yesterday’s opening were Lance Gokongwie, RLC’s vice chairman and sister Robina Gokongwie-Pie, among others.
Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Vice Governor Mimiette Bagulaya, former City Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez, Ormoc City Mayor Eric Codilla and councilors of the city as well as various heads of regional government offices were also around.
City Mayor Alfred Romualdez said that he was happy that finally the city has its own mall which could serve as a magnet for other big businesses coming in Tacloban to do business.
With a giant establishment doing business in the city, people of Tacloban and other parts of the region would not need to go out to other places to find employment, the city mayor added.
Aside from generating employment, the operations of the Robinsons in the city would also help local suppliers and those in the transportation sector.
He also allayed fears among local businessmen in the city saying that the market of the Robinsons is different and would even complement with them.
“I don’t think they would be affected. The business establishments (located in our) downtown area has its own characteristics,” he said.
Within the city, two big shopping malls, owned by the Gaisano family, are serving the people of this city and nearby places.
