Suggest ko lg, try to eat Sutukil in San Jose or Agus (now Boulevard) along Sagkahan Baywalk. Di kaya San Pedro Bar sa Leyte Park Hotel or Tacloban Royal Seafoods Resto along J Romualdez St. to have best seafoods cuisine at its best. Finally, don't go home empty handed bring your love ones a pasalubong from our place. You can buy delicacies like binagol (sabihin yung galing Dagami kasi yun ang the best), moron (you order special choco moron na may mani and cheese the best ini), carabao milk pastillas, i forgot the name of pastry looks like a chicken legs pero masarap sya, even the infamous 'tahong ni Karla' (tahong chips) meron din jan, and more. Just look for yourself. If you like native products, go to Kumaradang store in shopping center corner J Romualdez and Rizal Sts. There local products made in buri and other stuff are available. Also, if you like Tacloban print design t-shirt go to Kevins and Brians store along MH del Pilar. You can choose wide variety of designs. So, enjoy your stay there and have fun.

Did I forgot to mention where those delicacies you can buy? Its along Zamora Sts along Dunkin Donuts store. They lots of stalls offering lot of Leyte-Samar delicacies. You can choose what you want and the catch is that you can even make 'tawad' those prices. Just bring with you a friend who's a frequent costumer or unleash your 'tawad' prowess hahahahah!

FYI @cyberkada, Judge Romualdez? I think he's not only a Judge but one of the Justices long long time ago. Somebody from here correct me if Im wrong, sya lang naman ata yung ama ni Madame Imelda? ijun - thanks for the suggestions. kumain na ako sa Tacloban Royal Seafoods Resto last year (November 2008). on a tight budget kasi ako ngayon. pero I'll be back again sa Tacloban this August 2009. and yes, palagi akong bumibili ng mga pasalubong like danggit, moron, binagol, carabao milk pastillas and other local products. i will try to look for t-shirt na gagawin kong gift for myself.

mao - ok naman ang robinsons tour ko kanina, kaso marami pa rin tao kahit closing time na. nag meet kami ng friend ko sa robinsons. sa kanila kasi ako mag stay for a night before my departure to Manila.

Ok naman siya kaso medyo naliliitan ako ng konti pero better than Gaisano Central by a mile..

Went there kanina at around 8:30PM pero andami pa ring tao kahit 9:00PM na ang closing time.

Ang kyut tingnan ng mga Spider Cabs na nakaparada sa parking area, waiting for passengers, parang mga mini open taxis..hehehehe

Medyo asar lang ako sa mall hours..

Sana mag-change picture na rin sa Cinema 2 and 3. I don't think may nanonood ng Ded Na Si Lolo, they should increase the # of screens para sa Terminator Salvation 'coz laging puno ang Cinema 1. Gonna watch again TS bukas for the 3rd time..Heheheheh..

Open na pala ang mga BBQ stalls sa RTR Plaza. Medyo nagkaroon lang ng delay sa opening because the Mayor's Office isn't releasing business permits sa mga establishments dun. I don't know what happened pero I guess naayos na siya.

To think his name has been in the Judiciary perhaps the city government honors his name and his effort so the street Justice Romualdez was named after him. Truly, remarkable naman ang mga nagawa nya. Aside being a prominent one, he is also a poet and an artist.

Norberto Romualdez, the “Father of our National Language” and “the Great Leyteño”, is the brother of Orestes Romualdez, the father of Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
He also enrolled in the College of Pharmacy, with a view of taking up medicine, but later forsook it in favor of law. He took up some subjects in Filosofia y Letras and a course for Maestro Superior. At the outbreak of the Philippine revolution in 1896, the University of Santo Tomas was closed, but before that time he had earned the title of Maestro de Segunda Ensenanza (high school teacher).
What was probably his greatest contribution to the country was his fight for the adoption of a national language, he being the author of Act No. 184, providing for the creation of a National Language Institute and the adoption of a national language.

Norberto Romuáldez y López (June 6, 1875 - November 4, 1941) (often referred to as Norberto Romuáldez, Sr. to distinguish him from his son with the same name) was a Philippine writer, politician, jurist and statesman. He was the first Romuáldez to attain national prominence, and is deemed the "Father of the Law on the National Language".[1] He was the uncle of Imelda Marcos, the daughter of his youngest brother Vicente Orestes.

Romuáldez grew up in Leyte and first achieved status as a writer in the Waray-Waray language. His first Waray zarzuela was An Pagtabang ni San Miguel (The Aid of Saint Michael).

In 1908, Romuáldez wrote Bisayan Grammar and Notes on Bisayan Rhetoric and Poetic and Filipino Dialectology, a grammar about the Waray-Waray language. The following year (1909) he founded the Sanghiran san Binisaya ha Samar ug Leyte (Academy of the Visayan Language of Samar and Leyte) for the purpose of promoting and intellectualizing the Waray-Waray language. Romuáldez was also fluent in other languages like Spanish, English, and Cebuano.

Romuáldez served as an Associate Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court during the American Period. He was also a participant in the 1934-1935 Constitutional Convention which resulted in the 1935 Constitution for the Philippine Commonwealth.

Romuáldez died in 1941 after an undisclosed illness.

ijun - thanks for the suggestions. kumain na ako sa Tacloban Royal Seafoods Resto last year (November 2008). on a tight budget kasi ako ngayon. pero I'll be back again sa Tacloban this August 2009. and yes, palagi akong bumibili ng mga pasalubong like danggit, moron, binagol, carabao milk pastillas and other local products. i will try to look for t-shirt na gagawin kong gift for myself.

mao - ok naman ang robinsons tour ko kanina, kaso marami pa rin tao kahit closing time na. nag meet kami ng friend ko sa robinsons. sa kanila kasi ako mag stay for a night before my departure to Manila.

Francisco Enage
1919–1925

Senator Francisco Enage was born in Tacloban, Leyte, on October 4, 1878 to Emeterio Enaje and Cleofe Abella.

Before he became a Lawyer, he was lieutenant in the Philippine Revolutionary Army and was wounded during an encounter with the American force in 1900.

He entered politics in the early part of American administration and was elected Municipal Councilor of Tacloban, Leyte. Later on he was elected provincial Governor of same province. He was Representative from the fourth district of Leyte from 1912 to 1916, and Senator ninth senatorial district comprising Leyte and Samar from 1919 to 1925. He was once a Floor Leader of the Philippine Assembly, and twice President Pro-Tempore of the Philippine Senate. He also held the position of Provincial Fiscal of Iloilo, Executive Secretary, and Judge of the Court of First Instance.

In the first Commonwealth elections held on September 17, 1935, he ran as an Anti candidate for Assemblyman from the fourth district of Leyte and won his seat; but, to avoid a deadlock in the election of Speaker of the National Assembly, for which office he was one of the candidates, he resigned as Assemblyman to accept the position of Technical Adviser in the office of the president at Malacañang.

Gosh the mall is beautiful! Thanks to the Robinsons group for being bullish on Tacloban. Hay,maupay pa kamo nakakaenjoy hit mall. I am currently implanted in a southern town.

The cinema is at par with malls in Manila. Basing from the inside pictures of the cinema,its like that in Trinoma.

SC Writes Finis to the 16 Cityhood Bills

The Supreme Court, in an En Banc Resolution, has “finally closed and terminated” the consolidated cases which declared the 16 Cityhood Laws unconstitutional.

In a six-page extended Resolution dated 2 June 2009, High Court held that “there can be no doubt of the intention of this Court to consider (these cases) finally closed and terminated. Basic is the rule in our judicial system that litigations must end and terminated at some point.”

On 18 November 2008 the High Court, by a vote of 6-5, nullified the 16 Cityhood Laws. On 13 January 2009, it denied with finality the motion for reconsideration, there being no substantial arguments raised.

On 31 March 2009, acting on the 19 January 2009 letter of former Solicitor General Estelito P. Mendoza which urged the Members of Court who inhibited to participate, “the Court re-voted on the Motion for Reconsideration and resolved by a vote of 7-5 to DENY the Motion for Reconsideration with finality for lack of merit, the basic issues raised therein having been passed upon already.” The Court also decreed that “no further pleadings shall be entertained.”

However, later, the Court allowed the filing of a second motion for reconsideration. On 28 April 2009, by a vote of 6-6, the Court denied the second Motion for Reconsideration for lack of merit, and also “since a majority of the Court did not vote to grant it.” On 5 May 2009, respondents’ counsel received a copy of the 28 April 2009 Resolution.

APAC needs 820 call center agents

TACLOBAN CITY – The APAC Customer Services is planning to conduct its jobs fair this coming month of June in two different locations to fill-up the lacking sets and to met the demands of their customers.

According to Ma. Soledad Uy, Human Resource-Recruitment Assistant of the APAC customer service that they will conduct a jobs fair on June 12-14 upon invitation of Director Desiderio Belas of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) at the Tacloban Convention Center to coincide with the 111th Philippine Independence Day Celebration where overseas and local employment opportunities are available including government agencies under Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) to help ease the burden due to financial slowdown that hit across the globe.

Ms. Uy said that prior to the invitation, they had already scheduled a jobs fair on June 19-20 at Baybay, Leyte Function Hall to spread their massive recruitment strategy and to get a well qualified call center agents to man the type of services they employed.

The series of jobs fair we are conducting is to generate 120 call center agents for the month of July and to hire 600 additional call canter agents for the month of November to filled-up the required setting capacity of there office, she said.

Ms. Uy said that the present setting capacity of the APAC office located at Leyte Academic Center, Palo, Leyte is 1,000, but our present roster of employees is 243.

Our office is in dire need of additional manpower to complement the growing demands of our customers, she said.

The APAC Customer Service Inc. main headquarters is located in Illinois, with operations located throughout the United States and the Philippines.

Ms. Uy further informed that outsourcers offer a multitude of benefits to their client base, including eliminating capital expenses, flexibility, access to qualified labor, reduced costs, advanced management techniques, and the opportunity to gain access to state of the art technology without massive financial outlays.

Ms. Uy is urging all persons to take this opportunity to be part of APAC which only means that you too can become an expert and in joining us to help serve our clients' customers better.

APAC is the fourth largest domestic provider of outbound and inbound customer relationship management services that offers the programs in either customer care or customer acquisition serving prominent industries such as communications, financial services, insurance, healthcare, logistics, and travel and hospitality.

Job applicant’s is advised to bring with them all necessary documents in order to appraised if they possess all the qualifications.

Ms. Uy said that it is not necessary that an applicant is a degree holder but of course it is a plus factor but in order to please the APAC Human Resource expert, he must be a fluent in oral and written communication and possess a technical know-how to perform basic computer operations.

I read a news in LSDE nga BUYOGAN FESTIVAL of Abuyog, Leyte and TRIBU LUMAD BASAKNON of Cebu City will perform in PK 2009 as guest performer only. Both earned credits last and previous years in their own rights. Giving other municipalities of Leyte or other festivals in the region to showcase and compete with each other to run away about half a million prize for this years grand champion. BUYUGAN will receive daw HALL OF FAME due to last years fate emerge as grand champion winning local and domestic Festivals of Festivals. Post ko lang mamaya ung article na yun or kindly post na lang it here guys...LSDE article dated 13th of June.

Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals to continue in force

TACLOBAN CITY - The Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals would continue to show force this year despite opposition of a similar festival being revived in the city.

This was disclosed by PAGCOR Vice-Chairman Remedios “Matin” Petilla, who also chairs the Kasadyaan Festival Committee during a press conference held on opening night of the Kasadyaan Festival Park at the RTR Plaza.

According to the former governor and Leyte representative, initially there are 13 to 15 contingents expected to join this year’s streetdancing and festival presentation while two famed festivals in the country are expected to join as well as guest contingents.

These two are Leyte’s very own Buyogan Festival of Abuyog, Leyte and Cebu’s Lumad Basakanon from the famous Sinulog Festival. Both festivals have been respectively declared champions in national festival competitions such as the Sinulog Festival in Cebu every January and the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila during summer.

Mrs. Petilla said the Buyogan Festival has already been elevated to the Hall of Fame for successively winning three major festivals namely: the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival 2008, Sinulog Festival 2009 and the Aliwan Fiesta 2009.

“We would like to give chance to other contingents coming from other municipalities of the province and Buyogan have been winning the grand champion several times now in three different festivals. So, they will come this June as guest contingent,” Mrs. Petilla said.

Lumad Basakanon, on the other hand, is a group from Brgy. Basak, San Nicolos, Cebu City. It was the grand champion in the Free Interpretation Category in the 2007 and 2008 Sinulog Festival but bowed to the Buyogan Festival in the same category this year.

Lumad Basakanon was also the Grand Prize Winner in the Aliwan Fiesta in 2006, 2007 and 2008 but bowed to Tribu Kabatok in last year’s newly-revived Sangyaw Festival in Tacloban City.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Petilla said the number of contingents which signified to join this year would want to show the people and all visitors that Leyte’s municipalities are cohesive and especially now that after 14 years, Leyte’s festival contingents are making names in the national festival arena such as Sinulog Fiesta in Cebu and the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila.

On the other hand, Pintados Foundation Inc. President Eugene Tan said the group is sticking with the Kasadyaan Festival of Leyte province, saying the two has already become a tradition.

“As long as there would be Kasadyaan, there would always be a Pintados,” Tan said to the local media.

He likewise disclosed that as part of the preparation the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival has already sought a permit from the city for the streetdance parade.

“Since this is all for the benefit of the Taclobanons, we are hoping that they would grant us one,” Tan added.

On the same note, Mrs. Petilla said, they would proceed with the Pintados Kasadyaan Streedancing on June 27, 2009 and the stage presentation at the Leyte Sports Development Center thereafter.

“What is a festival without street dancing. It’s unheard of,” she said.

Kasadyaan contingents would be vying for the half a million prize that would be given to the grand champion of this year’s Kasadyaan Festival. There would also be consolation prizes for runners-up and non-winning contingents.

Prizes for the winners are being shouldered by the provincial government of Leyte. (AHLETTE C. REYES)

Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival opens nightly at RTR Plaza until June 30


TACLOBAN CITY - The Leyte province led Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival Park at the RTR Plaza opened this week to welcome in nightly fun-packed evenings and revelry marking the Feast of Señior Sto. Niño, also the patron of Leyte province.
However, the opening held Tuesday did not materialize without any glitch with the city government of Tacloban refusing to issue a permit for the Kasadyaan Festival Park as contained in a letter dated June 8, 2009 sent by the office of the City Administrator to Mayor Loreto Yu, who stands as the Chairperson of the RTR Kasadyaan Festival Park operation for this year.

It was learned that Mayor Yu wrote the city mayor on June 3, 2009 seeking for the approval of a special permit for the operation of 32 barbecue stalls at the RTR Plaza.

Th City Administrator’s Offices stand to refuse the issuance of a permit is based on the 1st Endorsement made by the City Legal Office which contends that there is still a court litigation pending on the RTR Plaza questioning the validity and constitutionality of a city ordinance regulating the activities such as the one being sought for by the RTR Kasadyaan Festival Park. The said case was filed by the provincial government of Leyte against the city government of Tacloban and lodged at the Regional Trial Court Branch 7.

However, in a 2nd Endorsement made by the Provincial Legal Office through the acting Provincial Legal Officer Atty. Imelda Nartea, it is contended that there is no ground to deny the issuance of a special permit because the RTC-Branch 7 already issued a suspension order ordering the city of Tacloban from implementing the provisions of the assailed ordinance, which in other words, according to the provincial legal counsel means, “it is as if no ordinance of such kind exists at the moment.”

The same 2nd Endorsement also contended that the province have the “absolute right to the use and enjoyment of the same premises and all activities held thereat by virtue of such absolutre ownership and in consonance with the suspension order issued by the Regional Trial Court.”

According to PAGCOR Vice-Chairperson Remedios “Matin” Petilla, “if they (city) can allow it at the Astrodome, at the Balyuan Park and anywhere else, there is no reason why they cannot allow it here at the RTR.”

The former lady solon, who also heads the Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals, was referring to similar activities already underway at the said venues.

On reports that the city is mulling over filing of a case, Mrs. Petilla went only as far as saying “on what grounds” would the case be filed but refused to further comment declaring they would deal with the situation if and when it arises.

The Kasadyaan Festival Park was formally opened Wednesday and will feature nightly shows and barbeque plaza, providing a venue for wholesome fun and entertainment to the whole family, friends, visitors and people of all ages.

The nightly socio-cultural shows and are being participated in by the various sectors of the community, from schools to government agencies, from youth groups and other cultural organizations.

This year’s organizers have lined up interesting nightly shows and band concerts until June 30. (AHLETTE C. REYES)

I was at Mang Inasal kanina, lining up, when suddenly..pooof..nag brown out..what's more irritating is that it was already my turn when the power got cut.. I waited in line for about 10 mins for the power to be restored until I was finally fed up kasi sobrang mausok na ung place na parang may sunog because there was no power at walang exhaust fans. Sabi ng manager ng Mang Inasal, walang back-up power ang Rob.

After leaving Mang Inasal, my mom and I decided na uuwi nalang kami but to our surprise, ALL EXIT DOORS WERE SHUT! Some sort of security precautionary measures daw. Walang pinapalabas. Sobrang nakakaasar, buti nalang the power went back on after around 20 mins. or else......grrrr....

What If the power outage lasted for 2 hours, would that mean na ikukulong nila ang mga mall goers for 2 hours?! An establishment as big as Rob should at least have a back-up power supply. Nakakasira ng araw.

After leaving Mang Inasal, my mom and I decided na uuwi nalang kami but to our surprise, ALL EXIT DOORS WERE SHUT! Some sort of security precautionary measures daw. Walang pinapalabas. Sobrang nakakaasar, buti nalang the power went back on after around 20 mins. or else......grrrr....

What If the power outage lasted for 2 hours, would that mean na ikukulong nila ang mga mall goers for 2 hours?! An establishment as big as Rob should at least have a back-up power supply. Nakakasira ng araw.

Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals to continue in force

TACLOBAN CITY - The Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals would continue to show force this year despite opposition of a similar festival being revived in the city.

This was disclosed by PAGCOR Vice-Chairman Remedios “Matin” Petilla, who also chairs the Kasadyaan Festival Committee during a press conference held on opening night of the Kasadyaan Festival Park at the RTR Plaza.

According to the former governor and Leyte representative, initially there are 13 to 15 contingents expected to join this year’s streetdancing and festival presentation while two famed festivals in the country are expected to join as well as guest contingents.

These two are Leyte’s very own Buyogan Festival of Abuyog, Leyte and Cebu’s Lumad Basakanon from the famous Sinulog Festival. Both festivals have been respectively declared champions in national festival competitions such as the Sinulog Festival in Cebu every January and the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila during summer.

Mrs. Petilla said the Buyogan Festival has already been elevated to the Hall of Fame for successively winning three major festivals namely: the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival 2008, Sinulog Festival 2009 and the Aliwan Fiesta 2009.

“We would like to give chance to other contingents coming from other municipalities of the province and Buyogan have been winning the grand champion several times now in three different festivals. So, they will come this June as guest contingent,” Mrs. Petilla said.

Lumad Basakanon, on the other hand, is a group from Brgy. Basak, San Nicolos, Cebu City. It was the grand champion in the Free Interpretation Category in the 2007 and 2008 Sinulog Festival but bowed to the Buyogan Festival in the same category this year.

Lumad Basakanon was also the Grand Prize Winner in the Aliwan Fiesta in 2006, 2007 and 2008 but bowed to Tribu Kabatok in last year’s newly-revived Sangyaw Festival in Tacloban City.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Petilla said the number of contingents which signified to join this year would want to show the people and all visitors that Leyte’s municipalities are cohesive and especially now that after 14 years, Leyte’s festival contingents are making names in the national festival arena such as Sinulog Fiesta in Cebu and the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila.

On the other hand, Pintados Foundation Inc. President Eugene Tan said the group is sticking with the Kasadyaan Festival of Leyte province, saying the two has already become a tradition.

“As long as there would be Kasadyaan, there would always be a Pintados,” Tan said to the local media.

He likewise disclosed that as part of the preparation the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival has already sought a permit from the city for the streetdance parade.

“Since this is all for the benefit of the Taclobanons, we are hoping that they would grant us one,” Tan added.

On the same note, Mrs. Petilla said, they would proceed with the Pintados Kasadyaan Streedancing on June 27, 2009 and the stage presentation at the Leyte Sports Development Center thereafter.

“What is a festival without street dancing. It’s unheard of,” she said.

Kasadyaan contingents would be vying for the half a million prize that would be given to the grand champion of this year’s Kasadyaan Festival. There would also be consolation prizes for runners-up and non-winning contingents.

Because last December 2008, the construction of GAISANO CENTRAL and ROBINSONs PLACE TACLOBAN were dubbed as 'Mall-fever' (the orig) vying for first mall to establish in the City. GC got the thrown but RPT dubbed as 'first real and decent mall' in the City hahahah...Tacloban expect for more investors to come.

Water sports tourney slated in Tacloban City on June 27-28

TACLOBAN CITY -- The City Government of Tacloban through the Fisheries Law Enforcement Team (FLET) will hold a water sports tournament at Cancabato Bay in this city from June 27-28.

Dubbed as the 1st Mayor Alfred Cancabato Bay Fisherman’s Sports Competition, the event will be held as part of the incoming Sangyaw Festival, according to FLET coordinator Norman Uyvico.

Uyvico said that the two-day competition is primarily meant to introduce Cancabato Bay as an ideal venue for water sports activities.

“Participants from all over the city will be competing in six water sports events during the tournament,” he disclosed.

Aside from Banca Rumba, the event will also feature a Sailboat Race, Hook and Line Competition, Spear-Fishing Contest, Swimming Relay Competition, and Cancabato Baysura Collection Contest, it was learned.

Uyvico said that they are expecting more than a hundred fishermen from this city to join the competition.

“All the 16 barangays in this city that are ‘covered’ by the Cancabato Bay have confirmed that they will be sending a nine-man team to compete in the tournament,” he revealed.

The participants will be competing for more than P30,000 in cash prizes at stake.

The grand champion of Banca Rumba will receive P1, 500, 2nd placer P1, 000, and third placer P500, and the fourth placer P300 will bring home P300 cash prize from the organizers.

In the Sail Boat Race, the winning team will bring home P1,500, second placer - P1,200, third placer - P800, and 4th placer - P500. Non–winning contestants will each receive a P200 consolation prize.

The winner of the Cancabato Baysura Collection Contest will take home P1,200, 1st runner-up - P1, 000, 2nd runner-up - P800, and the 3rd runner up - P600. Non-winners will each receive P100 consolation prize.

In the Swimming Relay Contest, the champion will cop P1,000, 2nd placer - P800, 3rd placer - P600, and 4th placer - P400.

In the Spear-Fishing event, the one registering the highest number of catch (in kilos) will receive P800, second placer - P600, and third placer - P400.

On the other hand, the winner in the Biggest Fish Category of the same event will bring home P800, 1st runner-up - P600, and 2nd runner-up - P400.

As in the aforementioned event, the one registering the highest number of catch (in kilos) in the Hook and Line Fishing Contest will receive P800, second placer - P600, and third placer - P400. Also, the 1st place winner in the Biggest Fish Category of the said contest will bring home P800, 1st runner-up - P600, and 2nd runner-up - P400.

DOT exec says Robinsons opening to boost tourism in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY -- The Department of Tourism (DOT-8) is optimistic that the opening of Robinsons place in this city would further boost the tourism activity in the region.

Tourism Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said in an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express recently that this mall, which is the very first in the region, would serve as an important facility to the tourism industry of Eastern Visayas .

According to her, it would cater to the various needs of the residents in this city and also those who usually visit here to buy different goods they need.

“It will serve the shopping, dining, and entertainment needs of both the residents of Tacloban and nearby localities plus the visitors and traveling public,” Tiopes pointed out.

She added that this will also answer the curiosity of those individuals who haven’t gone yet to any mall in some places in the country like Cebu or Manila.

Tiopes hinted that with the coming in of Robinsons, business atmosphere in the city would become more competitive to the advantage of the general public.

She added that trust and confidence of investors to the city of Tacloban would also increase as Robinsons is already considered as among those of the country’s most established business corporations.

“The establishment of Robinsons in Tacloban is a positive indicator that the city is a good area to invest in,” Tiopes said.

But Tiopes said the support of DOT to business establishments in the region is not only confined to big corporations but also to small ones as all of them are part of the economic activities in the region.

Meantime, Tiopes urged the local government units in the region to maintain a business friendly atmosphere in their respective localities so that investors would keep coming in to the region and eventually uplift the economic standing of Eastern Visayas where poverty rate still remains high up to this time.

Tan appeals to city, provl officials not to drag Pintados Festival into their squabbles

TACLOBAN CITY — The Pintados Festival should be insulated from any political squabbles between officials of the city and the province.

This was the appeal issued by Eugene Tan, the president of the Pintados Festival Foundation, as he argued that the cultural festival that their group has been spearheading is already recognized as among the most established in the country.

“We have been appealing to them not to drag the Pintados Festival into politics. We all belong to the private sector; we are not advancing any (personal) motives,” Tan said.

“We are doing this as part of our devotion as Catholics paying our homage to Senior Santo Niño,” the president of the Pintados Festival Foundation added.

He also stressed that the festival has been in existence for more than 20 years now without seeking any financial assistance from the city government.

“The only time that we received financial help from the city government was in 2006 when we were the hermanos for the fiesta,” Tan said.

The group of Tan, which counts 15 individuals for its board and more than a hundred volunteers, is allegedly being threatened by the city government of non-issuance of permit to stage their street parade. Some of the organizers of the group have been identified with the Petilla camp, political nemesis of the Romualdezes.

The group had applied for permit for the scheduled June 27 parade last June 9 but up to this time, it has yet to be approved, Tan revealed.

Tan said that no less than the Department of Tourism has acknowledged the Pintados Festival as it is now included among its calendar of activities for Eastern Visayas.

“The mere fact that we are included by the DOT in its calendar of activities says a lot. We were able to make the Pintados Festival grow (from its humble beginnings),” he added. A resolution from the city council was even passed recognizing the festival as the real festival for the Tacloban fiesta, Tan added.

Tan, one of the city’s most prominent businessmen, said that all Taclobanons have “embraced and took as their own” the Pintados Festival than any other festivals in the city.

The festival was first organized in 1987 by some of the city’s businessmen after the city’s then existing Sangyaw Festival was not held. The Sangyaw Festival, organized by former First Lady Imelda Marcos, was eventually revived by her nephew, Mayor Alfred Romualdez, in 2008.

Tan said that all the proceeds that the foundation generated from its various activities were all accounted for up to the last centavos.

“We are a non-profit and non-stock foundation. All of the proceeds that we raise out of our fund-raising activities are spent for a good cause…,” he said.

Among these is the annual feeding program for street children. It also offers some educational scholarship to less privileged school children.

The foundation, aside from raising funds from corporate help, generates funds from the holding of the Miss Pintados which is now a regional beauty and brain search.

I don't like the structure of that building...think over design (IMO)!
Especially most of typhoons passes by in our place...
Winds maybe turbulent enough to drag and blown away those panels...
And it maybe a cause of destruction and hazard to people later...
In contrary, if those panels must structurally design and can sustain turbulence and other factors it could be possible to construct.
Nice idea, but hard to construct! :nuts:

Matin promises of a grander Tacloban fiesta celebration


TACLOBAN CITY — Former Leyte Governor Remedios “Matin” Petilla vows that there would be a grand celebration of the Tacloban fiesta this year with the holding of the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival.

Petilla, who chairs the committee that oversees the festival, also downplayed any possible cancellation of the presentation of the festival which is now on its 14th year.

“We can assure our people that they will enjoy this year’s Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival as we want our people to enjoy as a way of paying our respect and homage to Santo Niño,” Petilla said.

Up to now the city government has yet to issue a permit to the organizers of the festival for them to use the city’s main streets during the street parade on June 27.

The former Leyte congresswoman remains confident that eventually, Mayor Alfred Romualdez would allow them to use the major streets of the city for the parade as she stressed that they have no other intention but to make the fiesta more lively.

“What we are offering to our people is not only (pure) cultural entertainment but paying homage to Senior Santo Niño which is also the patron saint of the entire Leyte and not only of Tacloban,” she said.

She said that about 15 contingents are expected to join the festival, which is slated to be held at the newly-refurbished Leyte Sports Center (Grandstand).

“It will be a grander presentation, I assure our people,” Petilla said.

Aside from the festival presentation, a series of activities has also been lined up by the organizers.

Among these activities are the musical concerts and presentations like the Waray Music Festival, which is now on its 5th year; magic show; agri-aqua show; and dance competitions.

All these activities are to be held at the RTR Plaza where rows of barbecue stalls are to be enjoyed by the public. (JOEY A. GABIETA)

Water sports tourney slated in Tacloban City on June 27-28

TACLOBAN CITY -- The City Government of Tacloban through the Fisheries Law Enforcement Team (FLET) will hold a water sports tournament at Cancabato Bay in this city from June 27-28.
Dubbed as the 1st Mayor Alfred Cancabato Bay Fisherman’s Sports Competition, the event will be held as part of the incoming Sangyaw Festival, according to FLET coordinator Norman Uyvico.

Uyvico said that the two-day competition is primarily meant to introduce Cancabato Bay as an ideal venue for water sports activities.

“Participants from all over the city will be competing in six water sports events during the tournament,” he disclosed.

Aside from Banca Rumba, the event will also feature a Sailboat Race, Hook and Line Competition, Spear-Fishing Contest, Swimming Relay Competition, and Cancabato Baysura Collection Contest, it was learned.

Uyvico said that they are expecting more than a hundred fishermen from this city to join the competition.

“All the 16 barangays in this city that are ‘covered’ by the Cancabato Bay have confirmed that they will be sending a nine-man team to compete in the tournament,” he revealed.

The participants will be competing for more than P30,000 in cash prizes at stake.

The grand champion of Banca Rumba will receive P1, 500, 2nd placer P1, 000, and third placer P500, and the fourth placer P300 will bring home P300 cash prize from the organizers.

In the Sail Boat Race, the winning team will bring home P1,500, second placer - P1,200, third placer - P800, and 4th placer - P500. Non–winning contestants will each receive a P200 consolation prize.

The winner of the Cancabato Baysura Collection Contest will take home P1,200, 1st runner-up - P1, 000, 2nd runner-up - P800, and the 3rd runner up - P600. Non-winners will each receive P100 consolation prize.

In the Swimming Relay Contest, the champion will cop P1,000, 2nd placer - P800, 3rd placer - P600, and 4th placer - P400.

In the Spear-Fishing event, the one registering the highest number of catch (in kilos) will receive P800, second placer - P600, and third placer - P400.

On the other hand, the winner in the Biggest Fish Category of the same event will bring home P800, 1st runner-up - P600, and 2nd runner-up - P400.

As in the aforementioned event, the one registering the highest number of catch (in kilos) in the Hook and Line Fishing Contest will receive P800, second placer - P600, and third placer - P400. It’s fiesta season once again for Tacloban City!

Although nothing much has changed compared to the frenzy of last year’s fiesta preparations, the mood has begun to set in amidst a backdrop of political undercurrents and bickerings and somehow managed to pick up the momentum of the otherwise laid back lifestyle in sleepy Tacloban.

And, yes, the opening of Eastern Visayas’ first-ever “real” mall no doubt has helped a lot in this noticeable mood change.

Fiesta venues for nightly concerts and cultural events are still spread at the three major points – at the Tacloban Convention Centre or Astrodome Grounds, the Balyuan Park along Magsaysay Ave., and at the RTR Plaza dubbed as the Pintados Kasadyaan Festival Park.

^^hmmm its a city fiesta right?...as far as i know kasadyaan in the past was held only during the leyte landing celeb..being an huc, imo the city has the right which festival to honor para ma promote ang city.and i think its only proper na may mga necessary permit unless gusto mu talag sumuway hit which i think matin is very good at.if they really want to honor the saint there are many other ways.umapi nala hira hit sangyaw...:lol:.btaw lets just hope na mag istorya both camps para ma settle ito na issue.....peace ijun...:lol:...lolo pa...:lol:
