I'm not sure. Hindi ko kasi napapansin ang Medical Arts Building ng bethany eh. :lol: Ngayon ko lang yan napansin since rinenovate na nila yung building. :D
They should improve their facilities para hindi sila mapagiwanan. Mabuti pa ang EVRMC kahit government owned hospital kumpletong kumpleto sa gamit :D

Filipino with (A)H1N1 virus dies

DOH warns of ‘more fatal’ strain

MANILA, Philippines—A 49-year-old woman died of heart attack at her home in Metro Manila on Friday, but a throat swab indicated she was infected with the Influenza A(H1N1) virus, making her death the first in the Philippines related to swine flu.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, who announced the woman’s death at yesterday’s briefing, stressed that the death was not caused by the virus but could have been aggravated by it.

The woman’s death and the rise in the number of swine flu cases in the country and elsewhere have prompted the Department of Health (DOH) to gear up for a possible virulent strain of the virus.

Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, director of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said a second wave of the virus would take place if the virus mutated into a “more virulent and more fatal” strain.

As of yesterday, the number of A(H1N1) cases stood at 445 after 17 more people, including two foreigners, were confirmed to have the virus.

The World Health Organization has declared a flu pandemic. As of Friday, it said more than 44,200 cases had been reported worldwide with 180 deaths, mostly in Mexico and the United States.

“We would like to emphasize that globally and locally, the overwhelming majority of cases only experience mild symptoms and eventually make a rapid and full recovery, often even without any form of medical intervention,” Duque said.

Of the 445 confirmed cases, 84 percent or 374 have already fully recovered, the DOH said.

Dry cough, fever

The woman came home from work on June 17, complaining of weakness, according to a DOH investigation.

She did not report for work the next day and went into self-medication (taking paracetamol) as she experienced dry cough, fever and chills.

On the morning of June 19, she skipped breakfast. She was restless and complained of difficulty in breathing. She died shortly before a doctor arrived.

Preexisting condition

Duque said the postmortem findings showed that the death was caused by “congestive heart failure secondary to acute myocardial infarction aggravated by severe pneumonia either bacterial, viral or both.”

The woman was also found to have an enlarged liver, spleen and kidney, tumor in the uterus and mild goiter.

“Given the available situation, we cannot conclude that the death is due to A(H1N1). But in other countries which have reported deaths, majority have preexisting medical conditions,” he said.

The woman had not traveled abroad where she could have gotten the virus.

Duque said the DOH would not have known that the patient had the virus had her brother not called him up on June 19 requesting that the autopsy include a swab test for A(H1N1) since the patient had flu-like symptoms before her death.

Nasal-pharyngeal and throat swabs were taken on June 19. The test done by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine came out positive.

Complicated case

“This is really a complicated case,” Oliveros told reporters at the briefing.

“For the past several days, she was not feeling well because she had several medical conditions and a family [member] claimed that she did not regularly seek medical attention,” she said.

In keeping with its policy on confirmed cases, the DOH did not identify the woman.

Duque would only say that the woman was based in Metro Manila. Her husband and grown-up son have also been tested since they have flu-like symptoms. But the patient’s mother, brother and sister have no flu-like symptoms.

Malacañang sought to downplay the death. “I don’t think that we have to be alarmed considering that the patient died of cardiac arrest,” Lorelei Fajardo, deputy presidential spokesperson, said at the briefing.

The first reported death related to the swine flu virus has prompted the health department to issue stronger warnings.

High-risk groups

Duque said the DOH would be “more aggressive” in targeting patients more vulnerable to fatal flu complications so they would get priority care.

The high-risk groups are those with uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic liver and kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infections; organ transplant recipients; those who are immuno-compromised; pregnant women and the very young (five years and below) and the elderly.

“We want to make it clear that high-risk groups, once they have the flu symptoms should immediately go to their doctor. They should not wait for their symptoms to worsen because they are prone to many infections other than the novel virus such as our seasonal flu strains,” Duque said.

See a doctor

The health secretary said it was prudent for parents to seek professional care for children with rapid breathing, excessive drowsiness or dehydration.

“In adults, chest pain, prolonged fever or labored breathing should prompt warnings to see a doctor,” he added.

Duque said the best defense against swine flu and other communicable diseases was still to boost one’s immune system and to practice good hygiene like proper hand washing and covering one’s mouth and nose when sneezing to prevent spreading respiratory droplets.

“Most people can fight off this virus without special medications or hospitalization. You can stay at home and take supportive care like plenty of fluids, vitamins and bed rest,” he said.

The DOH has discouraged wearing masks in public since the virus is not airborne, and advised that masks should only be worn by those with flu-like symptoms to keep them from infecting others.

Masks are also reserved for caregivers and medical personnel.

In anticipation of a second wave, Oliveros said health authorities were preparing a more intensive response plan to include new “simulation exercises” to determine hospitals’ preparedness.

She said authorities wanted to ensure that basic essential services continue. Companies are encouraged to come up with their respective “business continuity plans.”

“The most important component is risk communication to reduce panic,” she said.

“Second will be health infrastructure to make sure that all our hospitals and health facilities are prepared to address the severely ill cases,” Oliveros said.

Police probe gun incident in Tacloban SP session hall

TACLOBAN CITY- The Tacloban City Police Office (TCPO) is conducting further investigation on the alleged gun incident involving City Councilor Ranulfo “Bob” Abellanosa that occurred Wednesday night during a session of the Sangguniang Panglungsod.

In an interview, Police Senior Superintendent Brigido Unay, the TCPO chief, disclosed that he has already directed Sr. Insp. Amancio Longjas, the chief of the Investigation Section at the TCPO, to dig deeper into the incident where Councilor Abellanosa was seen allegedly carrying a gun inside the session hall of the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Tacloban while the session was going on.

“The Investigation Unit headed by Insp. Longjas is currently reviewing affidavits of witnesses and conducting further investigation as the details of the incident are not yet complete,” Unay said.

“What action we will initiate, whether we file a case or not against Councilor Abellanosa before the City Prosecutor’s Office, would depend on the report and recommendation that will be submitted to me in a few days by Insp. Longjas, “ he added.

The ongoing investigation stemmed from an incident that occurred last Wednesday while the City Council of Tacloban was holding its regular session.

According to the police incident report, around 7 p.m. while Councilor Abellanosa was delivering his speech inside the Session Hall, Alfredo Padernos and Katrina Torres, staff at the City Information Office and Office of Councilor Rachelle Pineda, respectively, had allegedly both personally observed that something was bulging at the back of the right side waistline of Councilor Abellanosa.

After Councilor Abellanosa ended his speech and had already returned to his table, Councilor Bianco Mate then took the podium to deliver his own speech. However, before starting his speech, he manifested that he would like to inquire from Councilor Abellanosa as to what is bulging on his back right side waistline, whether it is a handgun or a cellphone.

When Councilor Abellanosa was pressed by Councilor Mate to explain the bulge at his right waist, he reportedly stood up and said, “What is happening here? I’m already being insulted! I don’t like it anymore.” And while uttering these words, Councilor Abellanosa walked towards the Administrative Section and after opening the side glass door, he allegedly hurriedly took out from the right back of his waist a handgun of an unknown caliber and passed the same to someone inside the ante-room of the Administrative Section.

After passing the alleged handgun to the person inside the room, Councilor Abellanosa returned to his table saying,” this is already to much, I would not be bringing a gun here.” While uttering those words, witnesses saw him repeatedly banging on his chest, albeit nervously.

The elements of the SWAT team and the Staff Duty Officer immediately proceeded to said place in response to the call for police assistance initiated by Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez. When they arrived, they investigated the particular incident of the reported firearm which they were not able to seize from Councilor Abellanosa for it was allegedly passed on to an unidentified man.

As a consequence of the incident, Chief Unay said that the TCPO is mulling putting up a police post in the vicinity of the session purposely to frisk everyone who will attend the said activity before the start of the session if only to allay fears of the alleged incident to happen again.

“I’m preparing a communication addressed to Vice Mayor Arvin Antoni regarding our plan,” he disclosed.

TACLOBAN CITY- More showbiz stars, prominent political figures, and renowned media personalities will be coming here to grace the upcoming Sangyaw Festival.

In a press conference held at the Balyuan Convention Center on Friday, City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez, chairwoman of the City Tourism Council (CTC), disclosed that more “stars” in the showbiz, political, and media worlds have confirmed that they will be coming to this city on June 29 to join Taclobanons in celebrating the Sangyaw.

“(Christian) Bautista and (Luis) Manzano have accepted our invitation to join other showbiz stars in the grand parade on the 29th, “she revealed.

Those who have earlier confirmed their participation in the Sangyaw were singer-actress Karylle and actors Gabby Concepcion, and Jericho Rosales.

In addition to them, according to Councilor Romualdez, actors Cesar Montano and Dingdong Dantes will also join the parade courtesy of Globe, their corporate sponsor.

Councilor Romualdez said the City Government is also expecting the presence during the Sangyaw of many more “political heavyweights.”

The additional guests expected from the political world are former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, Senator Manuel Villar, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando, Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers, Marikina City Mayor Maridess Fernando, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, and Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra.

“With the array of prominent guests and participants, we are in for a bigger and grander celebration of the Sangyaw Festival this year,” Councilor Romualdez assured.

A brainchild of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, the Sangyaw Festival was first staged in the city in 1974 as part of its fiesta celebration.

Sidelined for more than 20 years, the festival was revived last year by City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.

City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez crowned the winner and delivered a short message during the pageant night.

Aside from winning the title, Bidua also copped the Darling of the Press special award.

The other winners of the search were Cheyenne Gill Laus of Brgy. 96 (Calanipawan), 1st runner-up; Dorothy Fabian of Brgy. 50, 2nd runner-up; and Christine Pearl Hipolito Upper Nula-Tule, 3rd runner-up.

For winning the search Bidua received P20, 000, Laus P15, 000, Fabian P10, 000, while Hipolito brought home P5, 000 cash prize from the organizers.

Makisig Morales, who is popularly known as “Super Inggo” in showbiz, serenaded the 12 candidates during the pageant, which was aimed at developing young girls into well-rounded children, who will be aware of their God-given talents and their rights as children

Tourists coming to Tacloban despite flu virus threat

TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Tourism is optimistic that Eastern Visayas will not lose visitors despite some confirmed Influenza A (H1N1) cases in the region.

DOT Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said in an interview that all hotels in this city got full reservation since May as visitors will flock to witness activities in line with the city fiesta on June 30.

“Nobody among local or foreign visitors has changed his or her mind about coming to Tacloban despite the reported positive cases of influenza,” Tiopes told Leyte Samar Daily Express.

Thousands of visitors are expected to join the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival led by the Leyte provincial government on June 27 and Sangyaw Festival on June 29 that is being spearheaded by the city government here.

“In fact, when we go around all hotels are fully booked. We have not yet considered those who will be staying in houses. Booking of hotels since May has been very tight and it will continue until the end of the fiesta,” Tiopes added.

For the second half of the year, the official is positive that they will be able to sustain growth because there are many conventions that will be hosted by the city.

“Organizers have not yet announced backing out,” she claimed.

Tiopes said that another factor that the tourism sector will remain stable is the absence of the country’s anchor destinations in the region. “The first to be hit are anchored destinations because they have more destination than we do. If we relate it to H1N1, this is a plus factor to us.”

The tourism department is looking at 10% annual growth in the industry. Though tourism arrival figures are not yet consolidated, Tiopes is confident that the target for the year is already achieved during the first half of 2009.

According to DOT, this could be attributed to hosting of 2009 Palarong Pambansa from April 27 to May 2 and holding of major national gatherings in the region since January.

The region now has five confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1). Three of them are students of Philippine Science High School Eastern Visayas Campus and a father and son from Catbalogan, Samar.

The tourism office has been receiving daily updates from health authorities that have been monitoring the spread of the said virus.

“The advisory remains consistent that there is no travel ban,” Tiopes said.

In a statement, the DOT central office said “that the move to phase 6 is based on geographic spread of the influenza A (H1N1) virus and is not related to its severity. The current overall assessment of the severity of the virus remains moderate.”

It is further said that the “World Health Organization points out that limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the disease, but would be highly disruptive to the global community.”

Tiopes stressed the need to get visitors informed on how to prevent from getting infected. “They should be armed with information. Every individual should practices measure advocating by health authorities.”

Despite the no travel ban advisory, people who are ill were told to delay their travel plans.

MANILA, Philippines—The active low pressure area spotted by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) over the weekend east of the Visayas has intensified into a tropical depression.

Named "Feria," the weather disturbance was estimated to be 230 kilometers east southeast of Borlongan, Samar. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour. It is moving west northwest at 15 kph.

The weather agency expects Feria to be 110 km west northwest of Borogan by Wednesday morning, 130 km northeast of Coron, Palawan Thursday morning and 220 km west southwest of Subic, Zambales by Friday morning.

As a result, Eastern Visayas will have rains and strong winds. Seas will be moderate to rough, the agency said.

The rest of the Visayas region, Southern Luzon, and Mindanao will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening, Pagasa said .

MANILA, June 23 (PNA) -- The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) urged the provinces in eastern Visayas and Bicol region to brace for inclement weather as tropical storm Feria makes a landfall and hit these areas in the coming days.

"Feria has intensified into a Tropical Storm and signal number 2 has been raised over Masbate, the nearby Ticao Island, Sorsogon and Albay," latest weather advisory issued by the state weather bureau stated.

As of 10 am Tuesday, the eye of Feria was spotted 100 kms East of Borongan, Samar packing winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 22 kph.

Feria continues to move closer to Eastern Visayas. It is seen to make a landfall over Eastern Samar this afternoon.

Signal number 2 is also hoisted over Samar Provinces, Leyte and Biliran Island.

The Pagasa reiterated its warnings to people living around the slopes of Mayon Volcano in Albay and of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon - especially along the areas where possible lahar flows are located - to be alert due on possible landslides and flashfloods due to to heavy rains in the coming days, the Pagasa said.

In 2006, typhoon Reming incurred more than 1,000 fatalities due to lahar flow from Mount Mayon, part of the government's effort to mitigate disasters is to alert people of effects of imminent dangers caused by natural disasters.

Feria was spotted as an active low pressure area Monday afternoon. It moved rapidly and intensified into a tropical depression overnight.

Signal number 1 is raised over Camarines Provinces, Southern Quezon, Catanduanes, Burias Island, Romblon, Marinduque, Southern Leyte, Camotes Is., Cebu, Bohol Northern Negros, Capiz, Iloilo, Aklan, Dinagat Is. Siargao, Surigao del Norte and Camiguin.
