Politicians, actors to grace Sangyaw


TACLOBAN CITY- More showbiz stars, prominent political figures, and renowned media personalities will be coming here to grace the upcoming Sangyaw Festival.

In a press conference held at the Balyuan Convention Center on Friday, City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez, chairwoman of the City Tourism Council (CTC), disclosed that more “stars” in the showbiz, political, and media worlds have confirmed that they will be coming to this city on June 29 to join Taclobanons in celebrating the Sangyaw.

“(Christian) Bautista and (Luis) Manzano have accepted our invitation to join other showbiz stars in the grand parade on the 29th, “she revealed.

Those who have earlier confirmed their participation in the Sangyaw were singer-actress Karylle and actors Gabby Concepcion, and Jericho Rosales.

In addition to them, according to Councilor Romualdez, actors Cesar Montano and Dingdong Dantes will also join the parade courtesy of Globe, their corporate sponsor.

Councilor Romualdez said the City Government is also expecting the presence during the Sangyaw of many more “political heavyweights.”

The additional guests expected from the political world are former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, Senator Manuel Villar, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando, Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers, Marikina City Mayor Maridess Fernando, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, and Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra.

The aforementioned political leaders will be joining Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Senator Francisco “Kiko” Pangilinan who have already confirmed their attendance in the festival.

From the media world, six to eight personalities headed by showbiz columnist Aster Amoyo and Philippine Star entertainment writer Ricky Lo will cover the event for Manila-based publications.

“With the array of prominent guests and participants, we are in for a bigger and grander celebration of the Sangyaw Festival this year,” Councilor Romualdez assured.

A brainchild of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, the Sangyaw Festival was first staged in the city in 1974 as part of its fiesta celebration.

Sidelined for more than 20 years, the festival was revived last year by City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.

Bidua wins Little Miss Tacloban title


TACLOBAN CITY- Zyndel Hurly Bidua, a beauteous five-year-old from this city, bested 11 other contestants to win the Search for Little Miss Tacloban 2009, which was held Sunday, June 21, at the Tacloban City Astrodome.

Bidua, who represented Barangay 92 (Apitong), got the nod of the panel of judges headed by Carlos Molo to win the coveted plum.

City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez crowned the winner and delivered a short message during the pageant night.

Aside from winning the title, Bidua also copped the Darling of the Press special award.

The other winners of the search were Cheyenne Gill Laus of Brgy. 96 (Calanipawan), 1st runner-up; Dorothy Fabian of Brgy. 50, 2nd runner-up; and Christine Pearl Hipolito Upper Nula-Tule, 3rd runner-up.

For winning the search Bidua received P20, 000, Laus P15, 000, Fabian P10, 000, while Hipolito brought home P5, 000 cash prize from the organizers.

Makisig Morales, who is popularly known as “Super Inggo” in showbiz, serenaded the 12 candidates during the pageant, which was aimed at developing young girls into well-rounded children, who will be aware of their God-given talents and their rights as children

The event, which was held as part of the Sangyaw Festival, was sponsored by the City Government of Tacloban headed by City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, Globe, San Miguel Corporation, Coca, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Digital Gleen, Cristina’s Saloon and Spa, Fil-Products, and Leyte Samar Daily Express.

Agri, Aqua, Trade and Food Fair opens June 24

TACLOBAN CITY -- As the Kasadyaan Park (RTR Plaza) presently bustles with activities and people having fun, an added attraction will take place this week in this venue. The Provincial Government of Leyte in collaboration with DA, DTI, BFAR, PCA, FIDA, NFA, DAR and the Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be holding an Agri, Aqua, Trade and Food Fair in celebration of the Tacloban City Fiesta. The Fair is composed of the Bahandi Trade Fair, LeySam Photo Exhibit, Leyte Heritage Food Festival and the Agri Aqua Fair.
The Fair opens on Wednesday, June 24 and ends on July 2, 2009. From 9:00 o’clock in the morning to 6:00 in the evening, one can buy at farmgate prices high value vegetables and fruitcrops, rootcrops, fishery products, processed food, native delicacies, coco products, planting materials, farm inputs, furniture, souvenir items and many more.

A revelry from sunrise to sunset, with ceaseless and rhythmic beating of drums. A sea of humanity in cadence with black soot “ati” performing rituals, all in honor of El Señor Sto. Niño.

IBAJAY ATI-ATI MUNICIPAL AND DEVOTIONAL FIESTA (January 24- January 25)
Ibajay, Aklan
A religious feast in honor of its patron saint Sto. Niño, held by transferring the holy image of the patron from Ibajay Cathedral Rectory and enthronement at St. Peter Parish Church, by way of amusing the image from where it was originally discovered and brought to the church.

ALTAVAS STO. NIÑO FESTIVAL (January 21- January 22)
Poblacion Altavas, Aklan
This day marked the end of the Fil-American war in Altavas. Since then, January 22 is being celebrated as an Annual Thanksgiving and Armistice Day in Altavas. Later, the date was adopted as its municipal town fiesta. This is the continuation of the joyous celebration of peace when Fil-American war ended in this municipality.

BANSUDANI FESTIVAL/FEAST OF THE DIVINE SAVIOR (January 17)
Bansud, Mindoro Oriental
A thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest which coincides with town fiesta. It features dances and cultural presentations by schools and barangay communities.

BATAN ATI-ATI MALAKARA Festival (January 16)
Poblacion Batan, Aklan
The festival is celebrated in honor of the Sto. Niño with merry making for a bountiful harvest, peace and prosperity, street dancing along the streets and plaza of the poblacion. Participants wear masks and costumes.

KAHIMUNAN FESTIVAL (January 16)
Libertad, Butuan city
Butuan’s version of the Sinulog of Cebu which has an equally lively and spectacular street dancing.

MAKATO STO. NIÑO FESTIVAL (January 15)
Makato, Aklan
This festival of Makato in honor of Sto. NIÑO goes a long way back in history; when the Spaniards arrived and introduced Christianity in the land. Catholic devotees flood the street to demonstrate their thanksgiving to the Holy Child.

BINANOG FESTIVAL (January 10-16)
Iloilo city
Popularly known as the ‘dance of the hawks’, this festival is celebrated each year in the Municipality of Lambunao in Iloilo in honor of Sto. Niño. The townsfolk all meet at the town plaza to watch the food event, fairs, beauty pageant, street dancing and tribe competition whose participants come from various barangays.

SINULOG FESTIVAL (third Sunday of January)
Cebu city
Sinulog Festival is a 9-day event celebration traditionally held every year, particularly on the third Sunday of January in Cebu city with its highlight on the last day where the popular long Sinulog parade commences.

DINAGYANG FESTIVAL (4th weekend of January)
Iloilo city
The events include the following: the Street dancing of the Atis, Street dancing of Kasadyahan, and the competition for Miss Dinagyang.

ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL (third Sunday of January)
Kalibo, Aklan
Besides celebrating this event in honor of Sto. Niño, Ati Atihan also makes a representation of the tribal people as event participants wear costumes and transform themselves by painting their faces and whole body with black soot and colorful ornaments that go along with the motifs of the tribal people.

Sandugo Festival in Bohol - Sandugo Festival is Boholano’s very own festival which is a commemoration of a historical event that had transpired in Tagbilaran City, the very heart of Bohol, in the year 1565 between a local leader Datu Sikatuna and a Spanish king conquistador Captain General Miguel de Legazpi. The festivity commences in the month of March each year. Boholanos that are overseas usually come home and gather together to take part in this event. Activities like several sports tournament and cockfighting make the festivity more interesting. The religious sector also has a major participation with its church services and fireworks add up to heighten the entertainment.

3. Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan - The most anticipated event in Aklan and neighboring provinces is the Ati-Atihan. The festival happens every year, particularly every third Sunday of January. This traditional festival commemorates the feast of Sto. Nino. This event symbolizes a combination of several religious beliefs. Besides celebrating this event in honor of Sto. Nino, Ati Atihan also makes a representation of the tribal people as event participants wear costumes and transform themselves by painting their faces and whole body with black soot and colorful ornaments that go along with the motifs of the tribal people.

4. Panagbenga Festival in Baguio - This is Baguio’s grandest Flower Festival that honors the abundance of the beautiful flowers in Baguio city. Panagbenga festival enhances the essence of Baguio’s Igorot ethnic culture as presented for Baguio’s best features. The participants in the street dancing performance are dressed up in the form of flowers incorporating various blooms among its 11 ethnic tribes. This is inspired by the Cordilleran-based celebration of Ibaloi dance called the Bendian.

5. Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo - Just following the Sinulog and Ati-Atihan festivals, Dinagyang festival is held every 4th weekend of January in commemoration of the Christianization of the natives of Iloilo in honor of Sto. Nino. The events include the following: the Street dancing of the Atis, Street dancing of Kasadyahan, and the competition for Miss Dinagyang. As people of Iloilo worship the Santo Nino with dramatized offerings and prayers, drum beats can be heard across the streets, with people dancing in colorful ethnic costumes and shouting Viva Senor Santo Nino!

6. MassKara Festival in Bacolod - This is Bacolod’s very own festival that’s also called “A Festival of Smiles”. MassKara festival is celebrated to cheer up the Bacoleno following a crisis in the province’s primary crop, the sugar cane and a devastating collision of the vessel Don Juan that took at least 700 lives. Among the activities in the festival is a street dance competition where competitors don colorful masks and dance to the tune of Latin beats, boasting coordination and stamina. They also hold the MassKara Queen Beauty pageant, fairs, food festivals, sport and musical events, agricultural fairs, garden shows, and many other special events. Unlike other major festivals in the country, this festival has no grounds on any religious, historical, nor cultural event.

8. Pahiyas Festival in Lucban - Held every 15th of May, this festival is an event of the Lucban community in honor of San Isidro Labrador for good harvest. Kiping is a native delicacy of brightly colored rice dough in thin like wafers in Lucban and during the festival, front houses of the locality are decorated with it. After the festival, the kipings are processed to become chips. In the afternoon, a procession is held as the image of the patron saint is carried all over the town to bless the farmers of good harvest. Started in the 16th century, Pahiyas is simultaneously celebrated in Tayabas and Sariaya, both towns of Quezon Province.

9. Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival in Tacloban -This festival is a merry-making event that lasts for a whole month. Its highlights include: the Leyte Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals, the Pintados Festival Ritual Dance Presentation and the “Pagrayhak” Grand Parade. The most awaited part of the festival is the native street dance: dancers resembling the pintados fill the streets of the city, adorned with battle gear to mimic the warriors in the Pre-Spanish period, tattooed with brilliant colors. Accompanied by the sounds of native instruments the performers dance their way from the Balayuan Towers and going throughout the city.

10. Moriones Festival in Marinduque - Moriones Festival is a weeklong celebration that starts on Holy Monday and progresses until Easter Sunday. It is a reenactment that tells the story of Longinus who was blind in one eye and was able to see again during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. All Holy Week past occurrences are reenacted such as Pabasa (recitation of the Christís passion), Via Crusis and Santo Sepulcro.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines—In Tabon-tabon, a poor town in Leyte, if it’s plastic, it’s legal tender.

The town’s government started accepting plastics as payment for services, food or as barter item for financial aid in a bid to promote its recycling campaign.

Rustico Balderian, mayor of the fifth class municipality about 30 km south of here, said the town government started accepting clean plastic materials in March 2009 as payment for services from the municipal government.

Plastics such as bottles, sachets, broken parts of chairs and others are accepted as payment by the town.

If a resident has a kilogram of clean plastic materials, he could exchange this with medicines or a kilogram of rice.

Licenses, permits

Plastics, according to the mayor, are also accepted as payment for marriage licenses or business permits. Residents needing an ambulance may pay for the service with a kilogram of plastic. The use of an ambulance would otherwise cost a resident P300 for its fuel load.

The municipal government, according to Balderian, also dropped its program of dole to poor residents.

Now, any resident in need of cash may bring used plastic for cash. A kilogram of used plastic would fetch P300; 2 kg, P500; and 3 kg, P1,000.

Balderian recalled that the scheme was used in the recent boxing match of Manny Pacquiao. Residents who wanted to see the live broadcast of the fight were asked to pay in used plastics—2 kg for front seats and 1 kg for other seats.

The mayor said the recycling program worked wonders as residents learned to segregate plastics from their daily trash.

“There is now a shortage of plastic materials in town,” Balderian said in an interview Sunday in his hometown.

The used plastics are turned into bags, slippers, bricks and tiles that are sold in markets outside town.

“This provides income to the municipality and jobs to some of our people,” said the mayor.

Workers in three-wheeled vehicles, known in the town as “pogpog,” collect the used plastics.

They are brought to a facility in the town that has a shredder, a boiler and a bioreactor (some sort of a machine) that process garbage, including the used plastic.

Aside from making recycled products, the town also produces fertilizer from organic trash that it sells for P5 per kg.

Balderian said he presented his town’s solid waste management program at the “Zero Basura” caravan held in this city last week and was attended by town mayors in the region.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines—In Tabon-tabon, a poor town in Leyte, if it’s plastic, it’s legal tender.

The town’s government started accepting plastics as payment for services, food or as barter item for financial aid in a bid to promote its recycling campaign.

Rustico Balderian, mayor of the fifth class municipality about 30 km south of here, said the town government started accepting clean plastic materials in March 2009 as payment for services from the municipal government.

Plastics such as bottles, sachets, broken parts of chairs and others are accepted as payment by the town.

If a resident has a kilogram of clean plastic materials, he could exchange this with medicines or a kilogram of rice.

Licenses, permits

Plastics, according to the mayor, are also accepted as payment for marriage licenses or business permits. Residents needing an ambulance may pay for the service with a kilogram of plastic. The use of an ambulance would otherwise cost a resident P300 for its fuel load.

The municipal government, according to Balderian, also dropped its program of dole to poor residents.

Now, any resident in need of cash may bring used plastic for cash. A kilogram of used plastic would fetch P300; 2 kg, P500; and 3 kg, P1,000.

Balderian recalled that the scheme was used in the recent boxing match of Manny Pacquiao. Residents who wanted to see the live broadcast of the fight were asked to pay in used plastics—2 kg for front seats and 1 kg for other seats.

The mayor said the recycling program worked wonders as residents learned to segregate plastics from their daily trash.
