Find the WiFi Hotspots in Tacloban City

TECHNOLOGICAL mobility is the trend today. Businessmen want to do business outside their office. Students love doing their assignments outside the campus or home. Mobile entrepreneurs have also sprouted anywhere in the city.

This trend would have been a big problem without the newest technology called Wireless Fidelity or WiFi. This kind of technology makes you mobile and do things through the Internet anytime and anywhere you want. The development and growth of this wireless technology is also accompanied by the rapid growth of coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and other establishments in the cities offering wireless Internet connection to their customers.

If you think this only available in big cities like Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and other highly urbanized cities, Tacloban City has also something to offer. Tacloban, by the way, was already officially declared Highly Urbanized City (HUC) in December last year after winning the “Yes-No Plebiscite.”

In case you are from Tacloban City or just a visitor and you want to stay connected with the Internet through your favorite laptop/notebook, netbook (portable notebook) or smart (high-end) phone, here are some of the WiFi hotspots that you can visit for yourself.

Before reading further, I would like to tell you that the following reviews are of my own and based on the services I got from them. None of them paid me to write against or in favor of a particular establishment.

Now, let’s get the ball rolling.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees. Located along Avenida Veteranos (formerly Imelda Avenue) across Divine Word Hospital. They offer unlimited and absolutely free Wi-fi to their customers. Of course you have to pay for the price of their specially made and brewed coffees.

Though prices are a little expensive, it’s worth the services you get. They have friendly service crew who will attend to your needs immediately. They serve and bring your cup of coffee right to your table while you’re busy working on something or chatting with a friend. Unlike other self-service coffee shops that you have to stand and be interrupted just to serve yourself after waiting for the coffee to be brewed.

Aside from their cakes, pastries and cookies, they also serve breakfast and sandwiches for snacks. The ambiance of the pace is great and perfect for a solemn date with your special someone. I am one of their loyal customers because of their good service. Highly recommended!

Bo’s Coffee Club. Located along Avenida Veteranos just across Liceo del Verbo Divino (former Divine Word University). They also offer free and unlimited WiFi connection to their customers. Just bear with the noise of the crowd because this place is usually crowded especially during weekends.

Another thing, their WiFi connection is not configured to work in every kind of laptop. My Acer Aspire notebook does not work there no matter what configuration I make. But my MSI Wind netbook works and connects well.

Their products are cheaper and they have a wide variety of coffees, chillers and other drinks. They also serve breakfast with coffee every morning.

Jose Karlo’s Coffee. Located along Juan Luna corner Zamora Streets across Sto. Niño Church. Their products are comparatively cheaper than their competitors, but their limited WFi offer is a disadvantage if you want a long period of connectivity to the Internet. They only offer one hour limited WiFi connection for every customer, and you need to secure an access card available after purchase before you get connected.

In case you want to surf the net for a longer time, there are available computers for rent inside the shop. You have to pay P20.00/hour for the rental.

The best in the place and I think one of the reasons why scores of customers keep on coming back is their interior design which bring a unique antique-modern ambience to the place. You’ll feel living in the ancient time because of their antiquated items on display. The entire structure is a combination of wood and cement as an effect of renovation of the ancestral house to make it a coffee shop.

You have the choice to stay inside and be cool with the air conditioner or stay outside and feel the natural breeze of air.

However, they practice the self-service policy. Even if you’re at the second floor, you really have to go down to serve yourself and get your coffee from the counter after fifteen minutes of waiting for it. This is somewhat disappointing and unfavorable for me, but you have to follow because you’re in the establishment. Otherwise, you look for another coffee shop who serves their customers passionately. Service crew is not friendly and needs to undergo training on hospitality and bartending.

I would like to call the attention of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). This establishment does not issue an Official Receipt upon purchase.

Kuchara Cafe and Restaurant. Located along Real Street across Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome). After eating your lunch or dinner at their restaurant, you might want to sip your favorite cup of coffee. The second floor serves as a coffee shop with free WiFi. Though their WiFi is unlimited, you can’t find any outlet to plug-in your notebook in case it runs out of battery. Their products are comparatively cheaper but of low quality. The crew still needs formal training.

HisHer Coffee Mode. Located at the ground floor of Tacloban City Convention Center (Astrodome). This is one of the newest coffee shops in the city. They also offer unlimited WiFi to their customers. Honestly, I am not particular with their services because I have not gone there until now. The place does not have an appeal to me.

Mister Donut. Located along Zamora Street. Offering a WiFi is their advantage and edge over their competitor Dunkin Donuts. They do not allow plugging-in your laptop while using it. The wireless signal is poor.

Panny’s Bakeshop. Located along Juan Luna Street. This is the best food/coffee shop I’ve ever known in the city. They offer a wide variety of cheap but palatable breads, pastries and cakes to feed your mouth while staying connected online. They serve brewed coffees and chillers at the cheapest cost. Plus, their unlimited WiFi is a big click to their customers. You can stay as long as you want and plug-in your notebook when it runs out of battery. The place is cool and the best for me. They also have friendly staff who attend to your needs immediately. I highly recommend this place if you have a tight budget but want a good service.

Dream Bakery. Located along MH del Pilar Street. This bakeshop offers a wide variety breads, cakes and pastries. They also serve refreshments like iced tea, fruit juices, soft drinks and even your favorite wine. Enjoy their palatable chicken and pork barbecue during night time. While enjoying your food and drinks, surf the net with their free WiFi. Catch it because their WiFi is only available from 7:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.

Aside from these establishments, there are also hotels in the city that offer free WiFi to their customers. Some of these are The Leyte Park Hotel along Magsaysay Boulevard, and Luxury Suite Hotel along P. Burgos Street.

These are the WiFi hotspots in the city. You can visit and check them out if you wish to. One thing that you should remember, if you want to stay longer in any of the above hotspots, you should consume more of their products for fair play. Bear in mind that you are saving P20.00 per hour because of the free WiFi.

Sangyaw Festival to be staged on Monday

TACLOBAN CITY - The revived Sangyaw Festival of Tacloban City is set to be staged in this city on Monday, June 29.

Contingents from the cities of Cebu, Legazpi, Isabela (Basilan), Santiago (Isabela) Iloilo, Bacolod, Legazpi and Surigao, and this city; and the municipalities Naval (Biliran) and Basey (Samar) would be parading on major streets of the city and in the process, make three stops to dance perform, as they vie for the top prize worth half a million pesos.

“We are expecting grand and spectacular presentation by each of the participating contingents,” Malou Tabao, focal person of the Sangyaw Festival, said.

The Sangyaw Festival is part of the cultural activities of the city’s 120th fiesta celebrations.

Tabao said that the parade would start at exactly 1 p.m. with all the participants including famous television and film actress Karylle. The start of parade is in Magsaysay Boulevard and it would cover about three kilometers.

Joining Karylle during the grand parade are actors Christian Bautista, Luis Manzano, Cesar Montano, and Dingdong Dantes.

Also expected to participate in the parade are “political heavyweights” headed by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.

Joining Enrile are former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, Senator Manuel Villar, Senator Francisco “Kiko” Pangilinan, Ilocos Norte Representative Ferdinand Marcos Jr., former Ilocos Norte Congresswoman Imee Marcos, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando, former Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers, Marikina City Mayor Maritess Fernando, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra, Santiago City Mayor Amelita Navarro and Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama.

Cebu’s Sinulog Festival, Bacolod’s Masskara Festival, Isabela’s Cocowayan Festival, Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival, Surigao City’s Karadjaw Festival, Santiago’s Pattaradday Festival, Basey’s Kawayan-Banigan Festival, Legazpi’s Magayon Festival and this city’s Tribu Kabatuk are the main participants of the Sangyaw Festival.

The prize for the winning contingent would be P500,000 while the second best would receive P300,000. The third placer would receive P200,000. Each contingent would perform for three minutes in designated streets, namely, Imelda Street, Rizal Street and Justice Romualdez Street before they perform for five minutes at the Balyu-an Amphitheater.

In addition to the cultural contingents from outside Tacloban, the parade will also feature for the first time 10 competing school and community-based contingents from this city.

These schools include the Holy Infant College (HIC), Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), AMA Computer Learning Center (ACLC), Panalaron Elementary School, Rizal Central School, Cirilo Roy Montejo National High School (CRMNHS), and San Jose National High School (SJNHS). The participating barangays are Brgy 49 and Brgy. 60-A.

The grand champion of the School and Community-Based Category will receive P200,000, 1st runner-up P150,000 and the 2nd runner-up P100,000. Just like the other contingents, the participants in the School and Community-Based Category will also perform at the designated streets and at the Balyuan Amphitheater.

Tabao said that over 1,000 persons would be participating the afternoon parade, reason for the Tacloban City Police Office (TCPO) to deploy over 200 policemen and other security personnel to ensure order and security.

A brainchild of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, the Sangyaw Festival was first staged in the city in 1974 as part of its fiesta celebration.

Sidelined for more than 20 years, the festival was revived last year by City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.

The City Tourism Council headed by City Councilor Cristina Gonzales- Romualdez is in-charge of overseeing and coordinating all activities related to the festival. (CIO-JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE)

Baybay Mayor asks constituents to pray, work to regain cityhood

BAYBAY– What was planned to be a big bang celebration for its second year anniversary as a city last June 16, turned out to be a bittersweet ceremony as the young Mayor Michael L. Cari called on LGU officials, employees and his constituents to pray “to regain the cityhood of our beloved Baybay”.

Around a week ago, the mayor’s office received the official copy of the Supreme Court’s denial on the second motion for reconsideration filed by the “League of 16”, declaring their decision finding the City-hood laws of 16 LGU’s “unconstitutional”.

Even so, Cari and the 15 other mayors hoped for a miracle to a 3rd motion for reconsideration they filed, even as he admitted wryly that it was “suntok sa buwan”. The 3rd motion was never treated, sources said. To recall, 16 towns became cities two years ago. Congress passed and approved their Cityhood laws which were ratified by constituents in plebiscites. However, their cityhoods were bitterly contested by the powerful League of Cities, the members of who’ve been openly complaining about a reduction in their Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA). The Supreme Court late last year declared the cityhood laws “unconstitutional”, but the finality of the decision was delayed after the League of 16 filed a motion for recon. However, the MR was denied once more last May.

This June 16, Baybay should have celebrated its 2nd year anniversary. They, instead, marked it in a solemn and simple ceremony at the gym, starting with a mass followed by a short program.

In his speech, Mayor Cari said that the day “could be one of the most memorable days in the history of Baybay”. “While we are celebrating the 2nd Charter Anniversary of the City of Baybay, we at the same time consider today as the first day of our struggle to regain such status as a city once again.”

The mayor called Baybay’s fate as the “will of God” adding that he believes it was the Almighty’s way of making them “see our shortcomings and limitations”. He said that even as it lost its cityhood status, his constituents should not forget that it was a “first class town and one that is among the most peaceful in the country, with hospitable and friendly constituents”. He attributed these to the untiring efforts of his elder brother, former Baybay Mayor Jose Carlos “Boying” Cari and mother, congresswoman Carmen L. Cari. He then called on the “servants of government” “to join hands and hearts” to deliver a genuine service to the Baybayanons, alluding it does not matter if a place is a town or a city to do that.

Baybay suffers a huge setback with the unraveling of its cityhood. Already enjoying a 300-million peso IRA for two years, it has embarked on projects which it could not likewise afford in its previous IRA. Now, their IRA is back to around P100-million. Supporters of Mayor Cari said that if there is one thing that they find remarkable in his performance as the mayor of the short-lived city, it was his being able to build a lot of projects with almost half the budgets being spent on the same kind of projects in bigger and older cities.

Mayor Beboy invites investors to Ormoc

Ormoc City Mayor Eric “Beboy” C. Codilla attended the opening of the Robinson’s Place in Tacloban last June 11 Thursday. Aside from the invitation of 1st district of Leyte Congressman Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, his purpose was to meet Lance Gokongwei president of JG Summit Holdings Inc. and currently head of the Cebu Pacific.

Mayor Beboy and wife Julida “Jing-jing Codilla, together with Vice-Mayor Nepnep Aparis met the Romualdezes and Gokongwei. Before the program started, the group roamed the place.

Mayor Beboy took the advantage of presenting his purpose to Lance Gokongwei and other investors present in the occasion. He wanted to ask the head of the Cebu Pacific to extend their flight in the city. As he observed, Ormoc flights with PAL Express has only 4 trip a week and is always full of passengers. The mayor said that he previously requested PAL Express for additional flight but the airline company has no airplane available. The Ormoc City Mayor is hopeful that the Gokongwei will grant his request and invest in Ormoc as it the center point in going to Cebu and other places in the southern part of the country.

The opening of the biggest mall in the region was hosted by Derick Ramsey and with additional sensation of Ms Kyla. Other VIP’s in the occasion were Tacloban councilor Cristina Gonzales, Leyte Vice Governor Memmiete Bagulaya, Former Tacloban City mayor Bejo Romualdez.

City gov't to present awards to outstanding Leyteños, Samareños

TACLOBAN CITY - The City Government of Tacloban headed by City Mayor Alfred Romualdez will present the Sangyaw Achievement Award to outstanding Leyteños and Samareños who excelled in their chosen fields in an awarding ceremony to be held at the Balyuan Amphitheater, this city, on June 28.

Leading the awardees are former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos and Tacloban Sangyaw Foundation president Alex Montejo.

Former Tacloban City Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez and former Leyte Governor and ambassador to the United States Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez lead awardees in the Field of Leadership and Governance.

Aside from the four, the City Government will also honor several other personalities who made a strong impact and distinguish themselves on their respective fields.

In the Field of Entertainment Media; Visual Arts and Directing: Al Claude Evangelio; Jesus de Paz; Aster Amoyo; interior designer Leo Almeria; and Leo Villaflor, a well-known painter.

Evangelio and de Paz are internationally-renowned and award-winning artistic directors, while Amoyo is a well-known entertainment writer and columnist.

The awardees in the Field of Visual Arts and Literature are Dr. Victor Sugbo, a noted poet and playwright, and Prof. Merle Alunan, a multi-awarded literary genius from the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban Campus (UPVTC).

Three outstanding men and women in the Field Performing Arts and Music are also to be recognized. Sharing the limelight with world-renowned choreographer Teresita Veloso- Pil are Ma. Victoria Diaz and Atty. Ronan Christina Reposar, a widely-acclaimed artist popularly-known as “Bolingling.”

Mayor Romualdez, assisted by City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez, will present plaques of recognition to the awardees during the ceremony dubbed as the “Sangyaw Awarding Night.”

“All of them are living or have roots in Samar and Leyte. The City Government decided to give them awards in recognition of their achievements and exemplary accomplishments in their respective fields,” said Phines Patalinghug, the chairman of the 2009 Sangyaw Achievement Awards Committee.

Their achievements and contributions, in one way or another, touched and inspired not only Taclobanons, but also people in other parts of Eastern Visayas and the country, as well,” he added.

Patalinghug further said that it is for the second time that the City Government presented the Sangyaw Achievement Award to distinguished individuals.

Last year, the City Government gave the same award to four Taclobanons headed by world-famous choreographer Douglas Nierras for their outstanding contributions in the field of arts.

A red-letter day for Taclobanons by Gianna G. Maniego

If you build it, they will come. And so they did.

With wallets in hand and shopping lists in mind, shoppers flocked to the opening of Robinsons Place Tacloban last June 11, keen to jumpstart a new era in retail therapy.

Launched before a massive crowd of Taclobanons, Leytenos and Samarnons, the mall, the 25th for the Gokongwei chain, drew no less than the city’s prominent movers and shakers.

Local VIPs included the city’s top executives led by Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez and wife, former singer/actress and current Tacloban councilor Cristina Gonzales Romualdez, Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, former Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez, former Gov. Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez, Vice Gov. Mimyit Bagulaya, Department of Tourism director Karina Tiopes and the city’s local executives—councilors Bianco Mate and Jerry Yaokasin and city administrator Munoz.

The event also gathered together the top brass of the Robinsons and JG Summit groups, led by James Go (chairman and chief executive officer of Robinsons Land), Lance Gokongwei (president and chief operating officer of JG Summit), Robina Gokongwei-Pe (Robinsons Retail Group senior vice president), Frederick Go (president and COO of Robinsons Land), and Johnson Robert Go (general manager of Movieworld).

Also spotted were Ruben Yu (Leyte Lumber), Allan Lee (Leyte Development Corp.), Paul Along (Shell Philippines), Melvin Schroth (Coca Cola), Tricia Torres (Casa Ilongga), Henry Gosyco (Goldilocks), Paul Santos (Picture City), Cristina Domingo (Guess), Milagros Uy (Lotto) and Aris Ferolino.

Regional destination

One can imagine the opening of the first full service mall in the Eastern Visayas region is a dream come true, not only for the retail giant but also for the local executives and residents of Tacloban City, recently declared a highly-urbanized city.

“We have always been the gateway to the region because of the airport, but now [with the opening of Robinsons Place Tacloban], it’s also the mall that draws them to the city,” says Mayor Romualdez, whose dream is to make his city an economic distribution hub. “The mall also gives local retailers an opportunity to expose and sell products from the region.”

“We’re very optimistic about retail spending... Everyday people have to eat, everyday people have to shop. And shopping malls cater to that segment. We’re not selling cars inside the mall. It’s an everyday lifestyle and we think people will carry on with this lifestyle and our malls cater to all classes of society. We hope we’ll be able to serve all the residents of Tacloban City, the province of Leyte and the province of Samar, the entire Region 8. We hope this will be the favorite family destination in Eastern Visayas,” says a confident Frederick Go.

Full service, finally

Sprawled across 33,600 sqm of what used to be a bus terminal along the national highway in the Marasbaras area, the mall is a major part of a four-hectare mixed-use development project that will eventually include a hotel, more retail outlets, and a possible call center. It may even include a residential complex.

With 85 percent of the tenants already in place, Robinsons Tacloban offers a variety of shops, restaurants and services, many of which had previously been available only in other provinces like Cebu and Davao, or in Metro Manila.

Taclobanons (as well as Leytenos and Samarnons) can now check out shops like Robinsons Department Store, Guess, Kamiseta, Mango, Rusty Lopez, Bench, Levi’s, Gibi, Nokia, Samsung, and Travel Club, as well as food outlets like Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Rai Rai Ken, Kitchenitos and Dunkin Donuts.

There are also outlets owned by local and regional entrepreneurs, including Cristina’s Salon and Spa (owned by the mayor’s better half), The Gustavian and Pino (owned by the Lhuilliers of Cebu), and Charito’s Delights (owned by Catbalogan native Emma Bermejo).

Christmas in June

Needless to say, Taclobanons took to shopping like a duck takes to water.

“There’s just so many things to see, so many things to buy,” gushed one mother, clutching a pile of towels in one hand, as she waited in line at the checkout counter of the department store.

At Robinsons Appliance Center, flatscreen TVs were flying off the shelves, while at Charito’s Delights, a store specializing in Samar delicacies, stocks had to be refilled eight times. Downstairs, hip-hop dancers entertained the lines of customers waiting to be served at Mang Inasal.

In fact, initial reports of first-day sales were optimistic. The appliance center, alone, reported an estimated revenue of P600,000, while Bermejo said Charito’s Delights took in approximately P50,000. Not too shabby for opening day.

The next problem is keeping up with the demand.

“I think we’ll need to add more movie houses,” said Bobby Go, general manager of Robinsons Movieworld and Hot Loops, after surveying the crowds milling around the mall’s three theatres.

Big plans

Buoyed by the positive response shown by the Taclobanons, Frederick announced that plans are already in place for the expansion of the shopping complex.

“We constantly are expanding our chain of malls, we think Tacloban is a good place, a good city, underserved and we think the local government is a very dynamic one, a very welcoming one and that is very important. If the local government is welcoming, it inspires us to accelerate our entry into the locality,” he said, adding that Robinsons will start work this year on a hotel to be constructed in the same complex as the mall.

“It will take 18 months to build and will feature more shopping outlets as well as the modern amenities of a deluxe hotel.”

“As far as residential projects are concerned, we are definitely looking for opportunities to build residential subdivisions here. So if there are landowners who are willing to partner with us or enter into joint ventures, we’ll be very glad to build residential communities here and plant the Robinsons flag.”
