ive been doing this map din from google maps kaso hirap e.. need to paste it all together para makita ko yung buong place with landmarks (nakita ko din kasi dun yung guiseppes..) pero its really nice kung meron na pala dito.. ill try to look for it before we leave manila. sana makita ko agad sa archives..:) see you soon guys!!! :banana:

SM Mall in Tacloban? Feasible guys! Having a massive success at Robinson Tacloban, it's time to for a competition! :)

You will realize that business and your city will be more happier if one establishment will soon launch to your city. You know what i mean :)

TACLOBAN — Robinsons Land Corp. is already planning to build a hotel and expand next year with last week’s opening of a new mall here.

Frederick D. Go, Robinsons Land president and chief operating officer, said the hotel, which will have 100 rooms, will be built near the mall and within the company’s four-hectare property.

"The mall is just the first phase of our development. We still have land available around the mall to expand. The economy is not bad and we think that the mall will do very well here in Tacloban," he told reporters during the opening of Robinsons Place Tacloban.

Lack of water cause of noise barrage staged by Tacloban City Jail inmates

TACLOBAN CITY -- Inmates at the Tacloban City Jail (TCJ) staged a noise barrage yesterday to protest living conditions at the said facility, particularly the lack of water supply.

Over 700 inmates at the TCJ banged on water containers for several hours to dramatize their plight. The noise barrage started around 8 o’ clock in the morning.

Senior Inspector Manuel Chan, the jail warden, said that what primarily prompted inmates to stage the noise barrage was the water problem.

“Inmates were already fed up with the problem of the lack of water supply,” he pointed out.

Water to the TCJ is supplied by the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD), which is run by the Provincial Government of Leyte.

But according to Chan, LMWD was unable to adequately supply the TCJ with water.

“It has been nine days since inmates have an adequate supply of water. Water requirement here is 350 jugs of water per day, but the LMWD was only able to supply an average of 73 jugs since August 15,” he disclosed.

The noise barrage inside the prison compound temporarily created a stand-off as members of the media and several officials from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) who went to investigate the matter were barred from entering the prison compound.

Tension was diffused and the noise barrage was stopped around noon with the arrival of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, who promptly initiated a dialogue between prison officials headed by Senior Insp. Chan, leaders of prisoners’ factions, representatives of the CHR, and the City Fire Department led by Deputy Fire Marshall Bienvinedo Tobilla.

During the dialogue it was found out that lack of water supply has even prompted inmates to use their own money to procure their own water supply.

“Because only a trickle emanates from the LMWD pipes, many inmates pool their money to get a supply of water, which the LMWD deliver by trucks at very exorbitant prices,” said Arvin Songalia, a leader of one of the prisoners’ factions inside the jail.

Songalia pointed out during the discussion that water delivered through pipes by the water utility is only priced between P 14-22 per cubic meter, while water that LMWD deliver to the prison compound by way of water tankers is priced at P 148. 50 per cubic meter

“We are paying five to six times higher for the delivered water,” he emphasized.

Upon hearing that, Mayor Romualdez commented that the failure of the LMWD to supply enough water to the city jail, while asking for a very high price for tanker- delivered water, is “a grave violation of human rights.”

“Inmates are suffering a lot because of the inadequate water supply, and some personalities are making money out of their suffering. We are looking into filing a case against LMWD because of this,” the mayor vowed.

To help solve the problem, Mayor Romualdez ordered the Fire Department and the City General Services Office (CGSO) to deliver water for now to the TCJ to satisfy the water needs of the inmates.

Meanwhile, in an interview over the Mano-Mano Program of Radio Diwa, Tess Pascua, information officer of LMWD, belied the charge that the water utility did not supply enough water to the city jail.

“We couldn’t believe it. In fact, our ledger showed that we have supplied 100 cubic meters of water to the city jail since August 1, which is more than enough to satisfy the water needs of inmates there from the start of this month up to now,” she pointed out. A cubic meter of water is equivalent to 1, 000 liters.

On the alleged exorbitant price for delivered water, Pascua admitted that they indeed charge more for delivered water, but she explained that it is only a little amount to cover operational expenses.

“Mayda delivery charge nga amon ginpapatong para hit amon nakukunsumo nga gasolina ngan iba nga kagarastusan kasumpay hit amon pagdeliver hit tubig. Ito nga cost nga amon gindudugang igo-igo la. Ginsisiguro la namon nga diri malulugi it LMWD,” she stressed. (Jose Rodriguez T. Señase)

QUESTION: Basi ha article nga guinpost ni @urban, nasiring ngadto ha article "we still have land available to expand" does it mean that the back portion and the area occupying by MS so so...is also a property of RLC? Am I correct? Or iton Tabuan Compound la it ira guinsisiring? Unta madevelop na it kalsada pakadto ha V&G or iton dda na likod hit RPT.

The Philippine shipping industry is in grave peril because of a hidden danger that lurks in the guise of fair trade and enlightened consumerism.

Robert Lim Joseph, chairman emeritus of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (NAITAS), disclosed that foreign interests are asking for skipping cabotage, which is the transport of goods and people between two points within the Philippine territorial waters.

He said that foreign-owned vessels are not only asking the Philippine government to be able to operate in the country like domestic shipping companies but also to give them tax exemptions, something which are not enjoyed by local bottoms despite problems like high oil costs.

“This means the death of the local shipping industry,” warned Joseph, who described himself as “provocateur” of nation building for true and real fair trade. “By any definition, it means economic sabotage through cabotage.”

At present, he said, foreign ships can pick up cargoes from, say, Davao, , to Europe and other countries like Singapore . But foreign interests want to pick up goods and passengers from, again, say Davao, to Cebu, Manila and other points in the country.

The Philippine international ports are those in Manila, San Fernando (La Union), Batangas City, Legaspi City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Tacloban City, Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City, and Zamboanga City.

Joseph warned that the foreign vessels are promising lower fares and freights than Philippine ships, but this is because of tax exemptions they seek to be made available for their operation here.

“Even if they invoke fair trade, this is not a level playing field because they (the foreign interests) want tax exemptions which will not be given Philippine shipping companies,” he stressed. “This is unfair trade!”

Joseph said the basic position of NAITAS and many groups supporting nation building is for fair open seas where there are equal opportunities to all players under a reciprocal arrangement.

He noted that the airline industry of the Philippines, being a former Commonwealth country, had earlier asked the American government to be granted cabotage for them to pick up passengers and cargoes in Guam to Honolulu and to Los Angeles in California and from the West Coast to the East Coast, but this was rejected.

SM Prime Holdings in Palo? That's a big big "what?"....donno but am sure it's a hint for us guys. It would not do an sponsorship unless they're into an agreement. Guys, maybe this is already a catch. I would rather not to think nor speak that SM will be located in Palo since it is not yet confirmed. Whether, SM will be built in Palo or Tacloban what is important magkakaroon na rin tayo uli ng bagong mall. A welcome development for EV region. Sana tama kayo jan nasa Pawing lang itatayo para boundary lang ng Palo-Tacloban.

Tacloban City Fire Station to upgrade facilities

TACLOBAN CITY — SFO4 Bienvinido P. Tobilla, Acting Deputy City Fire Marshall of Tacloban City Fire Station, said in an interview that there is a need for them to upgrade their station because of their dilapidated building and the equipment that they are using are already very old.

The plan of upgrading of the Tacloban City Fire Station came out a day after the Kevin’s fire incident.

“This motion was raised in a public hearing at the City Hall by a Fire Marshall which was conducted a day after the Kevins fire incident,” Tobilla said.

On that public hearing, the City Fire Marshall explained that there is a need for them to rehabilitate their station and to renew the facilities that they have because it was old already, Tobilla added.

BTW, nagnoise barrage an mga inmates ha Tacloban City Jail last Monday because of lack of water. 9 days na kuno hira diri gintatagan hin tubig hit LMWD. Pati mismo it mga preso asya nala intalon it napalit hit ira inumon.

New Tacloban fish port proposed

TACLOBAN CITY— The City Government, in coordination with the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority under the Department of Agriculture (DA), has proposed a fish port project to the Sanguine Panlungsod.

Roland Hidalgo, city planning and development officer, said in an interview that they are trying to transfer the fish port located at Old road Sagkahan to a site near the supermarket at Quezon Boulevard.

“Old road Sagkahan is not a good site for a fish port because during typhoons its structure get destroyed. Then, it is at the side of the street and makes the place unsanitary,” he said.

“It’s good to have it transferred to the market site because the area near the market is covered by Samar Island that even strong winds during typhoons would barely affect it,” he explained.

This project will be funded by Department of Agriculture and the City Government will provide the operation and manage the place.

“This will also address the unemployment problem within Tacloban because if there is a fish port there would also cold storage that will also generate economic activity,” he added.

For the vendors, it was learned that there would be briefing and resettlement for them in accordance to their areas adjacent to their previous areas. (ILMA NAYRA NACORDA, LNU Intern)

6 Tacloban boxers win in Maasin boxing tourney

TACLOBAN CITY- Taclobanon pugs lorded it over boxers from other towns and cities in the Eastern Visayas Region to dominate the Mayor Samaco Boxing Tournament, which was held at the Maasin City Gym, recently.

City Sports Director Joel Bugho disclosed that all six amateur boxers from this city who participated in the just-concluded boxing competition won against their respective opponents who came from Baybay, Matalom, Maasin City, among other places.

The six were Joel Adap (mosquito weight); Joseph Anduyan (flyweight); Damaso Oledan (light flyweight); Jerwin Sumigin (49kgs class); Romnick Villegas (bantamweight); and Gerald Delima (bantamweight).

“They easily beat all of their opponents in their respective weight categories. Oledan even knocked out after one round a certain Abrea from Maasin City who is a three-time Palaro winner in the light flyweight category,” Bugho revealed.

For their dominating performance, each member of the six-man Tacloban Team received P 1, 500 cash prize from the organizers of the one-day slugfest.

The Samaco Boxing Tournament is a yearly boxing competition organized by the City Government of Maasin headed by Mayor Maloney Samaco, who is a boxing enthusiast himself.

Asked what is their “secret” in achieving such feats in the face of very stiff competition, Romnick Villegas, a member of the team, said that hard practice made the difference.

“We were all confident when we entered the boxing ring because of the intensive practice and preparations we made,” he stressed.

Villegas added that the support extended to them by the Administration of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez also helped them achieve victory.

Bugho said that he was thrilled upon learning the dominating performance of the Tacloban Team in the tournament.

“We, in the city government, are very proud of the achievements of our boxers. Their victory brought honor and prestige to Tacloban City,” he said.

Bugho added that the city government through the Tacloban City Sports Office (TCSO) will soon establish a Boxing Development Program to help these young boxers enhance their boxing skills in preparation for competitions in the regional, national, or even international level. GSO to resume installation of streetlights

TACLOBAN CITY - The General Services Office here will resume its installation of street lights next year.

Since this problem is mostly in the barangays, a 20 watts cost-saving fluorescent bulb called “Alfred-Cristina lights” will be installed all over the City.

Rodulf Mate, General Services Officer, said that they are promoting an additional street lights for the pathways and that the budget for the said project will be more or less P1.3 million.

This is a continuing project they have started last 2007 but was stopped this year due to financial constraint.

MGB bares areas in EV with minerals

TACLOBAN CITY—— There were only 13 companies in the region that were listed and given mining rights by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau 8, according to the Regional Minerals Development Council accomplishment report for this year.

However, most of these companies are still on exploration stages, while one has been suspended by then DENR Secretary Alvarez in November 2002 and while another one was not officially forwarded to MGB-8. All 13 companies have the MPSA permit.

The total mineral production value or revenue in Region 8 for the mineral sand and gravel was 66,661.50 cu. m. for the volume and P8,314,574.50 for the value for 2009. In Leyte, the volume was 49,610.50 cu.m. and P4,515,324.50 in value, while in Southern Leyte the volume was 17,051.00 cu.m. with P3,799,250.00 in value.

MGB also reported the potential mineral resources that could be found in the Samar Islands like bauxite in the municipalities of Guiuan, Salcedo and Mercedes of Eastern Samar; in the municipalities Hinabangan and Wright of Samar; Northern Samar, Batag Island.

Chromite is one of the potential mineral resources in Eastern Samar, particularly in the municipalities of Llorente, Gen. MacArthur, Homonhon Island, Guiuan and Maydolong. Copper is found in Sulat and Taft of Eastern Samar and in Hinabangan, Samar. Gold in Gandara, Samar; Manganese in San Jose de Buan, Calbayog and Daram of Samar; Nickel in Manicani Island, Guiuan and Borongan, Samar; Pyrite in Hinabangan, Samar; Green Tuff in Wright and Gandara, Samar; Limestone (marble) in Calbayog, Samar; Limestone in Marabot and Lawaan, Samar; Peat in Basey, Samar; and Red Burning Clay in Gandara, Catbalogan, San Jorge, Sta. Rita, Calbayog and Basey, Samar and also in San Jose, Catarman, Sta. Rosario and Pambujan, Northern Samar.

There are potential mineral resources as well in Leyte and Biliran Islands like the Copper, found in Tacloban City, Leyte and Sogod, Southern Leyte; Iron (black sand) in Palo, Tanauan, Tolosa, Dulag, Abuyog and Mac Arthur; Manganese in Baybay; Nickel in Babatngon and Jaro; Limestone in Palompon and Isabel, Leyte and in Hinundangan, Southern Leyte; Rock Phosphate in Isabel, Leyte; Bentonite in Merida, Leyte; Dolomite in Isabel, Leyte; Gabbro in San Miguel, Leyte; Sulfur in Caibiran and Naval, Biliran; Serpentine in Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte; Red Burning Clay in Tanauan, Tolosa, Dulag, Tacloban City, Matag-ob and Palo, Leyte; and Peat in Ormoc City, Leyte.

For the Mining Industry Profile, in total land area, Leyte has 571,280 (Has.) 4.84% area covered by approved mining rights; Southern Leyte has 173,480 (Has.) 1.25%; Eastern Samar 447,075 (Has.) 0.26%; Samar has 559,100 (Has.) 2.19%; Northern Samar has 349,800 (Has.) 0.68% and Biliran has 55,550 (Has.) but no area covered by the approved Mining Rights. Last Monday, the 723 inmates, 51 of them women, staged a noise barrage on their gripe of lack of water supply inside the Tacloban City Jail which is under the direct supervision of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

As a result of the noise barrage, the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) promised to deliver water at the city jail.

The LMWD, Chan said, makes a daily water supply of seven metric tons of water which is not even enough to sustain the daily needs of the inmates.

“We need more than that. Water is very essential here just like in any ordinary houses. Just imagine if we don’t have water supply, health and sanitation will really be a problem here,” Chan said.

It was learned that prior to the noise barrage staged by the inmates, the delivery of water by the LMWD was not consistent. There were times that they deliver water just three times a week instead on a daily basis.

While the city jail has its own LMWD lines, they still need the agency to deliver water as almost no water was coming out from their faucets or water valves, Chan said.

A water system donated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) remains unused up to this time due to non-availability of water pressure, the city jail warden said.

“This is actually the reason why there were times that we are force to ask for TACLOBAN CITY - It’s all quite now at the Tacloban City Jail as its water problem has been given solution.

So says its chief warden, Senior Inspector Manuel Chan, who also dismissed reports that he was selling water among the inmates.

“It’s over. It’s back to normal here at the city jail,” Chan said.

According to Chan, an internal arrangement was made by him with the inmates to “voluntarily” contribute certain amount so that they could buy water from the LMWD to somehow solve their lack of water.

But some enterprising prisoners made their own arrangement by seeking delivery from the LMWD and in turn, they sold the water they get to their co-inmates, Chan said.

“When I learned about this, I asked the LMWD people to temporarily stop their ration, especially if the request is not from the BJMP . Unfortunately, this move of mine was misconstrued. Why will I stop our water ration when it is a very essential to us here,” the city jail warden said.

Chan said that he was glad that the lack of water supply inside the jail has not resulted to any out outbreak of diseases.

“What ill some of our inmates are tuberculosis and boils due to our sometimes searing condition,” he said. (JOEY A. GABIETA)

CHR looks at angle of possible human rights violations for failure of LMWD to provide water for 9 days

TACLOBAN CITY - The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is now looking at the angle of a possible human rights violation of the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) to over 700 inmates at the city jail for failure to deliver water for nine days at least for the month of August.

Edgar Fernandez, special investigator of the CHR who was present during the dialogue on Aug. 24 at the city jail, said that depriving the inmates of water supply is tantamount to violation of human rights because water is one the basic necessities of life.

In front of Mayor Romualdez, Jail Warden Manuel Chan, Pangkat Mayores of both BCJ and BSL, Media, among others, Fernandez committed to talk to Gov. Jericho “Icot” Petilla for continued supply of water to the jail, the LMWD being under control by the province. Fernandez also said they will try to discuss the matter with the general manager of LMWD.

Last Aug. 24, the 728 inmates made a noise barrage in protest to the inavailability of water supply for nine days prior to their noise barrage.

According to the leaders of both prisoners factions, BSL and BCJ, they have been suffering water problem since January this year which prompted them to cheap-in some amount from their own pockets and buy water from the LMWD delivered through the water tanker and then transferred to the inmates’s prepared water jug and other containers.

Senior Fire Officer 4 Bienvenido Tobilla, acting Fire Marshall, said Jail Warden Manuel Chan requested to deliver them water, but Tobilla said often times they could not as there is no water they could suck from the fire hydrants. More so, that the LMWD has installed a water meter at its hydrant “which means that all consumptions of water coming from the hydrant is billed against the city fire department.”

Upon instruction of Mayor Romualdez, Atty. Sergio Sumayod, city legal officer, is now studying what legal charges to file against the management of LMWD to give justice to the inmates whom they have not given water.

Romualdez clarified that the city jail is not under the city government being a prison but under the national government. But the city government cannot just close its eyes when problem like this occurs that is why they will provide water to the jail by all means, Romualdez added.

While it is true that there is a political squabble between the Petillas and the Romualdezez, they should spare the prisoners from this and provide water not only to the jail but to the whole city of Tacloban said the mayor. (FRED PADERNOS)
