WOW, ang tindi pala ng purchasing power ng mga shoppers ha RPT. That's nice, hope we continue patronizing RPT so that they'll have more revenues. More revenues meaning more income meaning feasible and economically viable for a mall operator operating here in Tacloban. Tacloban City Astrodome to be upgraded next year | Print |

TACLOBAN CITY - The Tacloban City Convention Center (TCCC), popularly known as the Tacloban City Astrodome, will be upgraded next year.

This was bared by City Building Officer Danny Fuentebella in a recent interview.

Fuentebella stressed that the upgrading of the Astrodome is part of the plan of the city government to convert the astrodome into a sports complex

“It is not only the city hospital that will be upgraded and improved, but also the astrodome,” he pointed out.

The city building officer disclosed that the upgrade of the said facility will involve the putting up of a soccer field, beach volleyball, basketball, and volleyball courts on the grounds of the astrodome complex; and the extension of the concrete sidewalk.

“The dream of sports complex will become a reality once the upgrade will be finished,” Fuentebella said.

Aside from that, according to Fuentebella, the city government will also install a ramp and an elevator inside the facility.

“Those will facilitate the entry and exit of disabled persons,” he emphasized.

Fuentebella revealed that the upgrade of the astrodome is one of the priorities of the administration of City Mayor Alfred Romualdez for next year, and that the city government will allocate P10 million for the project.

“The upgrade will begin early next year. Hopefully, before the end of 2010 it will be finished,” he said.

In a separate interview, City Sports Director Joel Bugho welcomed the impending upgrade of the Tacloban City Astrodome.

“That’s a very good development. That will help a lot as we aim to become the sports capital of Eastern Visayas,” Bugho said.

Built during the administration of former Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez at a cost of more than P300 million, the TCCC is the biggest and most modern astrodome and convention center in the entire Eastern Visayas region. Presently, the astrodome serves as a venue of a variety of local, regional and national events. (CIO-JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE)

Newest mall in Tacloban enjoys brisk business; 100-room hotel project to start January


Tacloban City (August 30) -- Robinsons Place Tacloban which opened in June of this year, is enjoying a brisk business, a top mall executive, informed.

Ms. Mercedes Taleon, Group Property Manager of Robinsons Land, said that the Tacloban mall is making waves and now competes in performance with the other Robinsons Malls all over the country.

The management is happy about the performance of the Robinsons Tacloban, Ms. Taleon said. The grand opening of the mall in Tacloban was one of the most successful opening of a Robinsons Mall and the management was very happy and satisfied.

More than 90 percent of the shops are already occupied, Ms. Taleon said. The other spaces have been reserved but will start operations in January of 2010, the manager added.

The Robinson's Bank is set to open next week so that businessmen and customers can deposit and withdraw as the need arises. More coffee shops and other establishments have opened to the delight of the local consumers.

In fact, the Handyman Do It Best Home Center has recorded the highest sale, outshining the 24 other such centers in Robinsons Malls around the country.

A local fruit supplier for Robinson's Place Tacloban was reported to have grossed two million peso sales, if this has anything to do with the Nutrition Month celebration advocating healthy lifestyle, this writer wonders.

The shops at the Robinsons Mall have been observed to be enjoying the patronage of many customers not only from Tacloban City but from the other parts of the Region.

Furthermore, Ms. Taleon said that the Robinson's Hotel just beside the mall will start to be constructed in January of 2010. The hotel, which will have 100 rooms, will be built near the mall and within the company's four-hectare property.

"Part of the expansion is a hotel to be constructed next to the mall. The first few floors will also be retail outlets, and probably a bridge way to connect the two phases. It's really about time. One of the develop needs that has greatest opportunities now after the shopping mall will be a hotel," the executive said.

Local economists are optimistic that the presence of a major player in the Region will serve as an engine of growth that will trigger other big players to locate in the Region.

The opening of Robinsons in Tacloban has also generated jobs. It was estimated that Robinsons Place has cause the employment of about 3,000 locals, directly or indirectly. (PIA 8)

An Waray partylist showcases local concoction in Oktubafest


Tacloban City (August 30) -- The local coconut wine known in the Leyte-Samarnon dialect as "tuba" will take the center stage in this year's 2nd Oktubafest which aims to advance and showcase the cultural heritage and the tuba industry of Eastern Visayas.

The 2nd Oktubafest was formally launched in the middle of August with various government agencies giving their thumbs-up in this activity which was initiated by the Waray partylist group last year.

An Waray Partylist Representative Florencio "Bembem" Noel who is the moving force behind this activity, said that the success of last year's Oktubafest inspired the organizers to stage it once again this year, to help boost the coconut industry in general and the tuba sector in particular. After all over a million people in Region 8 depend on the tuba for their livelihood, the legislator said.

To be held on October 17 – 18, 2009, the 2nd Oktubafest will feature the best tuba processors and food delicacies (sumsuman) that are eaten while drinking tuba, and other coconut by-products.

The Oktubafest will judge the Best Bahal; Best Bahalina; Best Tuba infused dish; and Best Tuba concoction, among others.

In last year's Oktubafest, featured contests were the Tuba and Barok Painting Contest, a monochromatic tuba painting on 25" x 20" canvass; Magsaranggot and Tuba Photography Contest, photo essay of a tuba gatherer and other tuba-related subjects; Kawit-making and painting contest; and Winaray Song writing contest.

Representative Noel disclosed that the climax in this year's Oktubafest is the attempt to break the world record on the biggest number of people in attendance for a wine tasting event.

About 7,000 people from all over the Region are expected to participate in this attempt to break the current world record based on the Guinness Book of World Records which was made on September 15, 2006 at the Plaza de Toros, Aranda de Duero in Spain where the wine tasting was attended by 5,100 people, Congressman Noel informed.

The Oktubafest is envisioned to provide the needed boost to the Region's coconut industry. After all, Eastern Visayas is among the country's three leading coconut-producing regions with an annual production of 72 million coconuts processed into various products.

Copra produce from the Region contributes tens of millions of dollars for the country's economy. (PIA 8)

GTZ supports organic farming, white copra processing project in Leyte


Tacloban City (30 August) -- In order to achieve higher income from coconut production, the Organic Farming and White Copra Processing Project was formally launched on July 20, 2009 at the MABIP Plant in Matalom, Leyte.

Ms. Cecilia Astilla, adviser of the GTZ-ENRO, informed that the Project is a joint Public-Private Partnership being undertaken by the SC Global Coco Products, Inc. (SC Global); the Agribusiness Federation of Financial Intermediaries for Rural Empowerment (AFFIRE) and the Environment and Rural Development Program supported by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), in order to address the issues of low productivity and lack of organizational skills at the farmers' level in the coconut sector.

The launching was graced by the key personalities of the Public-Private Partnership, the officials of the Province of Southern Leyte, Philippine Coconut Authority, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, directors of AFFIRE member cooperatives, Kaisampalad, Inc., Peoples' Organizations and the Matalom officials.

Mr. Nestor Bonotan, the chairman of AFFIRE, welcomed the guests to the launching program and expressed appreciation to the joint projects partners as "this would lead to better economic status of the coconut farmers.

Ms. Juliana Hinterberger, GTZ ENRO adviser gave a briefing on the PPP and described how the Value Chain Study on Coconut became the impetus for the three players to know each other which eventually led to the partnership.

Mr. Manny Licap, general manager of SC Global Coco Products, discussed the operational aspect of the White Copra Processing and Organic Certification.

Responses were given by several invited guests before Dr. Jurgen Schade, Adviser for the Community Based Forest Management component of GTZ, delivered his closing message.

The highlight of the program is the demonstration of the white copra processing plant.

Coconut is one of the major agricultural exports of the Philippine. Region 8 or Eastern Visayas is one of the largest coconut producing areas of the country with its farming systems being primarily coconut-based. Selling of dried copra is usually the most important source of income for upland farmers.

A value chain study on coconut has identified the low productivity and lack of organizational skills at farmers' level as key impediments to achieving a higher income from coconut production.

In order to address these issues, a joint Public-Private Partnership has been started in Leyte Island with the objective of introducing organic farming practices to farmers involved in the Community-Based Forest Management, as well as farmers in surrounding areas; and link them to supply chains for marketing organically produced coconuts, bananas and papayas.

The expected benefits include the increase of income for the participating partners, higher productivity of the farmland through intercropping and good agricultural practices; and wider promotion of organic, socially and environmentally sound standards.

In its initial phase, the Project will cover the LGUs of Maasin and Bontoc in Southern Leyte; and Matalom in the province of Leyte.

Meanwhile, a supply chain for organic copra processing has been developed by SC Global in addition to its regular copra oil processing operations. The pilot scheme is located in Matalom, Leyte while a similar scheme shall be applied for the Joint Public-Private Partnership project.

The supply chain involves organic certification (Ecocert) of the coconut lands of farmers. The farmers shall sell whole nuts to AFFIRE for processing in the Matalom Plant. The product, which is white copra, is of superior quality as compared to the regular dried copra. The process entails the paring or removal of the coconut's brown meat, one of the steps in the white copra processing.

The copra is then sold to SC Global at a pre-arranged price which is higher than the price of regular copra. SC Global will further process the same into organic coconut oil and exports it to European and US markets.

At present, SC Global is in the process of setting up a chips processing plant for organically grown bananas of the Saba and Cardava varieties and papayas of Sulu variety. The Chips processing plant is located within the oil mill in Baybay, Leyte, the first industrial unit of this type in Region 8.

AFFIRE is a federation of 27 successful farmer cooperatives in Leyte Island and Biliran, with extensive experience in micro-finance. It has invested in three coco coir decorticating plants in Region 8 and now intends to further diversify its business and focus on white copra processing, which will complement its present business orientation.

GTZ-EnRD is supporting peoples' organizations who engage in sustainable community-based forest management in the provinces of Leyte and Southern Leyte. One intervention area is to support upland farmers in value-adding and marketing of their produce in order to increase their income. GTZ-EnRD observed that a large proportion of the CBFM areas consist of underutilized coconut lands. (PIA 8 with GTZ)
