View Full Version : City Squares
Manila-X May 30th, 2007, 06:48 AM I would like to see some images of squares in your city. Also, what's your city's main square?
In HK we have Statue Square which is at the heart of Central.

zachus22 May 30th, 2007, 02:17 PM Yonge-Dundas Square is considered by many to be the "heart" of the city, but its grotesque construction and overabundance of advertising may or may not leave something to be desired.
http://p.vtourist.com/3030975-The_new_and_improving_Dundas_Square-Toronto.jpg
http://www.spacing.ca/wire/images/Metropolis-small.jpg
Despite its downfalls Yonge-Dundas Square is a hugely popular part of the city. It's colourful, vibrant, and alive with music, shopping and eating. I really like it, but for those against consumerism and bright lights, it's probably not the ideal spot.
staff May 30th, 2007, 03:42 PM The most famous square in Shanghai is 人民广场 / People's Square.

As nice as the other is ( my favorite square ) it's just not as "main" as the other - people rarely use it for meeting point unless you have to go to some of the things on the square itself...

Wow, the buildings look so familar. If not for the tram, I think it could be easily in Vienna as well...
Slartibartfas June 19th, 2007, 07:17 PM Probably one of the most gemütlich squares in the old city center of Vienna, the Franziskanerplatz. Its a place within the city center where you even can spot locals... ;)
It hosts the smallest coffee house ("Kleines Cafe") of Vienna btw

Two squares and a large courtyard on one picture:
http://www.foto-julius.at/wien3/W2247+.jpg
upper center: Heldenplatz (heroes square, the square Hitler announced the Anschluss of Austria... no the name has of the square definitely has anything to do with that.)
middle center: Maria Theresien Platz (named after the sole empress of Austria in history and one of the greatest monarchs of our entire monarchic history)
lower center: the large courtyard of the museumsquartier. Hosting two modern arts museums and many small museums and small active art institutions. The courtyard is a nice and very lively place to hang out.

we call them "Praça" or "Largo". Praças are more important than largos, both mean square (or plaza if you want) in English.

I'll use other people's pictures.

gappa June 21st, 2007, 07:41 AM When Melbourne's street grid was planned out in the mid 19th century, the government made sure that no city square was included. Apparently, because they thought that it would only encourage democracy! This decision has been the bane of Melbourne for over a century now, with many proposals for a city square having been mooted and one even constructed (democracy must be in vougue) without any real success.
Happily we now have a city square to be proud of. Federation Square, completed in 2002, has finally filled the void in Melbourne's civic heart and been embraced by it's citizens:

As you can see, this square has as many buildings as it has open space. These include two museums, an art gallery, an information centre as well as multiple cafes, restaraunts and pubs. This ensures that there's always something to do at Fed Square, no matter your tastes.
high_flyer June 22nd, 2007, 12:42 AM Personally I think Federation Sq in Melbourne looks a mess, its too fussy, and that building dominates the space. Surely the square itself should be the feature, not the main building?
cardiff June 23rd, 2007, 11:29 AM I love the inside of the building as its more ordered, the outside looks a bit of a mess and its not what i would call a square due to its inusual shape and cluttered ness. Also its location seems like more of a piece of scrap land utilised, as any square next to a train station normally isnt divided from it by a major rd in my experiance.
OshHisham June 23rd, 2007, 11:52 AM w0ow i love the melbourne's art museum. who's the architect? australian..?
gappa June 23rd, 2007, 02:49 PM ^^ A beleive the architect is from Chicago.
^^ ^^ It's definitely had it's share of detracters, myself amongst them. But you can't deny that it has worked as a civic space. Tens of thousands of people packing it out to watch Australia's progress during the World Cup being just one example. It's given Melburnians a place to come together, and they've embraced it.
A r c h i June 23rd, 2007, 03:20 PM Architects are Don Bates (US) and Peter Davidson (AUS) of Lab Architecture (which moved its office from London to Melbourne) in partnership with Bates Smart (an Australian firm). The design is the result of a international design competition. Both Don Bates and Peter Davidson worked for Daniel Libeskind who also happened to be on the panel of judges which decided on the winning design.
