I love random statements in the street.

Yesterday I saw "Robin Loves Batman" hanging from a bridge in Balmain.

Wish I had a camera with me.

yeah, the 1980s; had a familar unchanged skyline for almost a decade.
the norm-MLC, AMP,Aus sq,Qantas, Hyde park sq were the tallies while SOB,Westpac pl,CAGA & barclays were the midrise.
then the 90's boom really transformed the skyline with Gateway,Chifley,GPT ect.

I do like those old awnings in that photo, adds a touch of elegance. I would love for some period style street lights to return to the streets around the QVB. The utilitarian smart poles really don't do the building justice.

It would have been worse than losing that palace in the Domain. To lose something that stunning by fire is one thing, but to intentionally demolish it for a car park is criminal to say the least.

Is Haymarket, I mean "The peak" sitll under this limit?

CULWULLA
October 12th, 2007, 12:33 AM
council has enforced a 50m height limit for haymarket to allow sunlight into the many public areas used by TAFE and entertainment precintc like Ent cent.
I actually think its a good idea. The other side of broadway (CUB) can go to 120m which is appropriate.
The PEAK and paddys market block is under Harbour foreshore Athority thus the reason why a 50storey bldg was allowed in this lowrise area. I think the lone 160m skyscraper is ok beacuse its centred in whole block.

LanceDriver
October 12th, 2007, 01:17 AM
ok, so that's the story. i knew the peak was a big exception but wasn't really getting the whole 50m thing for haymarket. i understand that they should strategically leave sun access planes for those areas but it should still allow for some spots to rise, just a few. yes, the peak does look good centred and alone. anyway...

oww don't know about that........737 is 3.76m in diameter (fuselage), and the A380's Trent 970 engine diametre is approx 3m. or 3.16m for the Engine Alliance GP7000, which is the other engine the A380 is rigged with. Still, in any case its a massive beast of a thing.........wingspan of almost 80m!!

Oh my God that is huge! How the fuck does that stay in the sky??

It's all mathematics! Big enough wingspan (tick), strong enough engines (tick), therefore enough lift to make anything fly!

Anyways, I didn't know where to post this, but I took this while walking up Margaret St last night. Since when does Australia Square have pink lighting? I love it!!

^^ breast cancer awareness, i think....

they should also do a red/green scheme for christmas, god knows there is enough blue neons on the skyline...

oh and yes i might have been a little inaccurate with my earlier post on the a380, what i do noe is that the 737 can fit in the 773ER's engines, and i thought the a380s wud be at least as big to get that goddamn thing in the air

and yes i look at that plane and still think how the hell can it fly !?!?

Shell House (1936) , lisgar House (1928),national bank (1932),AWA tower (1939),Transport House (Metropolis hospital) (1936).
there are some tragic 70.s boxes, but you can only go to 45m on western side due to tough sun plane.

It's Brendan, not brenden. It is definitely one of the best precincts, which is exactly why they should demolish all that concrete shit and modernise the area. Buildings like the Governor Towers wouldn't look as bad if they were encased inside a row of glassy blue buildings. Obviously there are some beautiful classic buildings in that photo but buildings such as the Royal Exchange and the InterContinental really need a reclad.

They give the city more life and they look good as well. I heard that ad on the radio again, "The SkyView Observation Wheel will be in Darling Harbour until January 31." so it leaves in February, nice.

I have to agree, I have seen the skyview wheel and it looks like something found in a travelling fair run by pykies.

Not quite, but maybe in the anglo-centric world. An awesome original (although rebuilt in 1945 due to having the crap bombed out of it in WW2) is The Riesenrad in The Prater, Vienna. I'll be back in Vienna in July and will make the obligatory trip to this giant Tram Car like Ferris Wheel.

The Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) was erected in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Empereror Franz Joseph I. The wheel itself spans 200 feet (about 60 m.). 15 cabins and the upholding structure weigh a total of 430,5 t and rotate at the speed of 0,65 m/sec.
In 1914 the Giant Ferris Wheel was the location of a sensational film stunt: Madame Solange d'Atalide managed to complete one round on horseback on top of one of the cabins. This would not be the only time that the 'Riesenrad' was featured in major films: The Third Man or Before Sunrise to name just a few.
In 1944, at the height of World War II, the Giant Ferris Wheel burnt down, but was rebuilt in 1945 - at the same time as St. Stephen's cathedral. The Viennese Riesenrad is the only giant ferris wheel of its time which is still in use today.

I think we can discount the older style ferris wheels that have real style to the designs. I was more referring to the modern half arsed ones with no soul that are cropping up more recently.

Miramar (peoples palace) is more like 1994/95, sadly. That was perhaps the shittest period for Meriton towers - I think they bought all that cream brick stock in bulk. I remember seeing this tower advertised in the paper when i was 13 or so, and thinking the rendering looked really good - if only I'd known how it would turn out!!

I'm pretty sure Museum Towers was a 1988 Meriton effort?

maybe the giant brick constructs will become iconic one day, maybe even heritage listed. i would think that using so much brick would be slow and costly and just wouldn't happen anymore to that grand size. plus i'm sure no one would get away with it now anyway!

CULWULLA

finn-yes of course, i was thinking 1988, but thats museum towers.
yes Mirramar was 94 vintage.
but the view which i came across today walking up george st just hit me.
3 projects by meriton nearly 2 decades apart.
brick can look good.
real good.
just look at the 1930s art deco flats in potts point ect.
but if you going to build 40floors ,
you really need to detail the brickwork.
not just change colours ect.

 This one's not likely to remain standing for long enough to be heritage listed.

Meriton quality (esp from the mid-90s) and brick construction in a high-rise is a recipe for disaster - my parents live in the Miramar building, so I've seen first hand how crappy it is!

Notice the dark colour of the bricks in the upper floors in Cul's pic? That's not staining - instead those bricks are saturated with water after some rain, as a lot of the grouting between the bricks has been weathered away, and Meriton also somehow forgot to put waterproof capping on the tops of the brickwork when they first built the place!!!

Some of the brickwork on the building has already collapsed in the past (at the roof level, so hard to see in photos) as a result of this. Also part of an outer wall on the building around the 30th floor collapsed a few years back and it was discovered that Meriton didn't use brick ties to secure the bricks during construction.

As I said, Meriton quality... :ohno:

I wish it could be demolished! Something really needs to be figured out with regards to strata-title arrangements so that we don't have to live with these disasters forever!
