Durbsboi
June 6th, 2007, 03:03 PM
Oh fuck off, you just ruined it

Umhlanga
June 6th, 2007, 03:07 PM
DB, don't worry about 'Lost'. SABoy didn't ruin too much by telling you that. We find out pretty early on in the season finale that they must get rescued, but the episode still allows for plenty of mystery. Plus, the actual rescue hasn't happened yet. (That last part will make sense when you finish season 3.)

June 6th, 2007, 03:15 PM

SA BOY

use lime wire its the best by a long way

Umhlanga
June 7th, 2007, 03:08 PM
SA Boy, no one knows who the dead guy is/was. I don't have time to find it now, but if you look on Wikipedia's entry for that episode, there's a screencap taken from an HDTV broadcast. The screencap shows the obituary in Jack's hand, but the paper is crumpled, and an exact 'translation' is impossible. The obituary identifies the man as John Lantham of New York, but there's no such character (yet) on the show. I've seen speculation that Lantham is (take your pick) Ben, John Locke, Sawyer - pretty much every male character on the show. :lol: But no one knows for sure.

All I know is that I'll be happy as long as Juliet, Penny & Kate are alive. :drool:

Definitely an old picture from the Protea Umhlanga. The Pearl Tides were well past that stage even last August.

Good pictures though. I've never seen the view from the Protea. Makes me miss Umhlanga Rocks even more. :cry: Best part about that picture: the village green isn't covered with sleeping municipal workers! :banana:

While we're doing the nostalgic thing, my gran used to have a house on the bluff that overlooked the bay. She used to watch the flying boats taking off and landing at their base at what is now Bayhead. Here are a few pics I found of this time...

Excellent pictures! Thanks for posting them.

My grandparents have dozens of old shots that they bought from an antique dealer on Point Rd years ago, and it's absolutely amazing to see the old city. Most amazing to me is to see pictures of well-dressed people promenading along Vic Embankment, with beautiful hotels behind them. The Durban Club is just one relic of what was an amazing stretch.

someone should put some shiny glass facade on those beach front properties in Durban and bring them into the 21st century. They are still so 1970. Anyone share my sentiments. Even Joburg buildings desperately need something like that.

Durbsboi
August 8th, 2007, 08:19 AM
I also think many need a major exterior revamp, but I dont think all need fancy glass facades, some just need better paint jobs with brighter colours, not the dull shit they got on them now.

^Anton^
August 8th, 2007, 01:33 PM
^^
I agree with Durbsboi, better paint jobs and brighter colours would be enough... glass façades would change the place a bit too much, I think it would lose part of its essence.

Umhlanga
August 8th, 2007, 04:12 PM
Anything (except glass) to make the Golden Mile look less tacky. For starters, every building south of Mont Blanc and north of uShaka needs a new facade - at least.

I love glass towers! very american, its looks modern

Umhlanga
August 8th, 2007, 08:21 PM
But glass towers look better in a CBD, not a beach resort.

Durbsboi
August 9th, 2007, 01:16 PM
Take Miami for instant or the Gold coast in Asstralia, their beach fronts dont have glass buildings all along, many have fine paint jobs & added lights to enhance the buildings during the evenings

kulani
August 9th, 2007, 04:47 PM
You have a point, i think a revamp of those towers and some paint would do. Perhaps try go for the Miami white look on most towers along the sandy white beaches of Durban. But some serious investment needs to be done on all those skyscrapers along the beach front.

dysan1
August 10th, 2007, 01:54 PM
could you imagine the terrible glare and reflections glass towers would create at the beach? they may look nice, but not right for the environment.

Many of the buildings have had paint jobs, but some will need reconstruction to alter the exterior as they are brick and the like in places.

And generally the buildings arent terrible guys. And anyway, how are you going to get hundreds of buildings altered in design? i think rather paint and do modern with new developments...and i'm sure some of the older ones will land in developers hands in the not too distant future......

didnt know that. anyway, mcD didnt own it, a francisee did, that person must have gone under or whatever and then moved on. i know mcd's are planning an agressive expansion in kzn in better sites than the ones that closed previously. they are looking at 2 more in central durban, beachfront, hillcrest, toti, ballito (opening before year end) and near the airport

Oh Dear god, they growing again!

yes the 1 in Westville was owned by a pvt company that went under, but people were offered to take the franchise as it is a run it, but McD's didnt approve & therefore decided to sell it to another company who changed it into a KFC.

August 31st, 2007, 08:05 PM
Love the pics King!

Durban (Zulu: eThekwini) is the second most populous city in South Africa, forming part of the eThekwini metropolitan municipality. It is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and is famous as the busiest port in Africa. It is also a major centre of tourism due to the city's warm subtropical climate and beaches. According to the 2001 Census, the city has a population of 3.2 million. Durban's land area of 2,292 square kilometres (884.9 sq mi) is comparatively larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density of 1,460 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,781.4/sq mi).

:lol: Get on it, DB. We'd hate for you to end up sharing a cell with Schaik.

I love those views from the Berea/N3. I love the (for lack of a better word) suddenness with which the CBD appears when you drive to Durban from Pinetown & Westville. For a long time you wind through the hills, obviously near a bustling city, but there's no sign of the city centre. You climb the backside of the ridge, buldings getting denser and higher, then suddenly...BAM! There's this concentration of buildings, with the sea beyond. I really enjoy that tranisition.

That was quite funny to see them guessing, Pule. I think those who got it right were from, or had been, to SA. I also think that your signature (which indicated you were based in JHB) gave a hint to some that the pics were probably from SA. If it had been posted by a New Zealander, I doubt those who hadn't been to Durbs or seen other pics of it, would have even guessed it was from Africa.

These are waaay overdue (had no time to upload and post), but better late than never.

These are from the final day of the Clipper race a few weeks back, when the yachts were leaving Durbs. I thought now would be better than any other time as the yachts are about to enter Oz (with Durbs in the lead!!).

I prioritised pics of the amazing crowd support (and skyline, of course) instead of the yachts (can always do that later). I doubt many other stopping points have / will draw in crowds like this...

PS -apologies for the colour. It was a dull and dreary day...

Okay, here are my offerings for the Durban banner. Both vastly different from the traditional skyline pics of Durban we've seen over the years, and from each other.

First up, the old and the new. A view of Durban from Point Waterfront. I like this pic because it contains both the well-known skylines of the Golden Mile and the Esplanade, as well as the emerging new skyline at the Waterfront. Oh, and Durban's biggest asset: its beaches!

Timeball Tower stands out like a massive centrepiece beacon in this pic. Best, uninterrupted, dense skyline on the African continent, in my opinion.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc160/ja65sin/Dec1-138a.jpg

Now for pic 2...

In my opinion, there's no other city in Africa (and very few in the world) that can compete with Durban's downtown for sheer architectural diversity and contrast: Western (Christian), Hindu (North Indian and Dravidian), Islamic, Victorian, modern western, Art Deco, Edwardian, Union, Spanish, and Afro Chic, amongst others. This pic captures just some of these contrasts.

I wanted to showcase Durban as it's never been showcased before:

- east vs. west

- glass & steel vs. bricks and mortar

- modern vs. historical

From left to right:

- Victorian (1901 ex-Town Hall and now central post office) vs. modern western (recently completed ABSA Regional Headquarters);
- North Indian (the 1901 Durban Hindu Temple, Somtseu Rd) vs. modern western (Servamus Building, Ordinance Road);
- Catholic (1902 Emmanuel Cathedral, late Gothic Revival style) vs. Islamic (Juma Masjid Mosque: first built in 1884; rebuilt 1927- hybrid Islamic / Union period vernacular style; oldest mosque in Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest);
- Victorian Gothic (Church, Aliwal Street) vs. modern western (Embassy Building);
- Islamic (Juma Masjid Mosque) vs modern western (gold glass and steel tower on Albert Steet);
- Catholic (Emmanuel Cathedral) vs. modern western (glass and steel 88 Field Street);
- Modern Renaissance (the spectacular 1910 City Hall) vs. modern western (Embassy Building);
- Islamic (Juma Masjid Mosque) vs. modern western (Embassy Building);
- Anglican (the 1853 St Paul's Church is Durban's oldest Church) vs. modern western (Embassy Building)

The banner with the different architectural styles is interesting, Reckon it just needs some blending done as opposed to being a lot of small pictures (and unfortunately I'm not a graphic designer :( )...

The second one captures the spirit of Durban though, and its just a stunning photo..

still cant belive I havent been in the aquarium at Ushaka :ohno:

You should go. Definitely go. It's not awe-inspiring or overpowering the way some of the larger aquariums are, but it's probably the most unique one I have ever visited. The shipwreck concept makes for a great experience.

Also, I'm not sure if they still do this, but when I visited, it was possible to eat at the adjacent restaurant, present your paid restaurant receipt at the aquarium entrance, and tour the aquarium for free after dinner. You have to eat a bit early to make it work, but it's a great deal, and the aquarium was virtually deserted. I know the same deal was in place last July when some of my family visited, but no one I know has told me about it since then. But if the deal is still on offer, take it. You can't beat a chance to have almost the entire aquarium to yourself.

Yup if you go to the restaurant with the shark tank then you get to go to the aquarium for free after hours which is a great experience. I went with a load of friends in July and we had the aquarium to ourselves. Odd thing to do when slightly drunk but great fun!!! Think the offer is only on a Sunday evening though.
