sumang007 August 2nd, 2011, 06:22 PM The actual construction at Dankuni is of greater magnitude than what the video clip shows. Was not actually prepared to see this kind of activity and was delayed in capturing the entire work. You can notice the cement wall and the construction activity happening within the railway land. I had not noticed anything when I had travelled on this stretch 8 months back.

samrat_m August 2nd, 2011, 07:36 PM Where are they building it in Sunny Park?Last time i dont remember seeing any vacant plots.
It is coming up @ No 3 Sunny Park which houses a big plot with a dilapidated mansion. When you enter Sunny Park it will fall to your left.
samrat_m August 2nd, 2011, 07:41 PM New alipore Block M...means near New Alipore Triangular Park?? (opp. Gupta Sweets)
No, New Alipore triangular Park has 'Block G' on one side and 'Block J' on the other.
Block M is near New Alipore petrol pump. As soon as you descend from Durgapur bridge, Block M is towards the left, near Suruchi Sangha club.

^^Nice video, Sumang007! :cheers:This could be one of two rail coach factories that was announced in one of the last two railway budgets, with the other one at Kancharapara.
Suncity August 3rd, 2011, 12:01 AM As per ABP, Didi has come up with a plan to paint the heritage buildings in the city a certain shade (her choice is said to be light blue in this case). The idea is inspired from Jaipur (pink city) and Jodhpur (blue city). Some intellectuals have liked the idea.

AbhishekDatta August 7th, 2011, 04:39 PM Mamata to lay foundation stone of new film city
Kolkata, Aug 7 (IANS) Eastern India's biggest film city is all set to come up on a 350-acre plot in Hooghly's Uttarpara, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laying the foundation stone August 13, said Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee Sunday.
"On Aug 13, our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lay the stone for the biggest film city in eastern India. The plot is perfect for the project which will come up on around 350 acres while rest of the land may be used for other purposes," said Chatterjee.
"We have requested Banerjee to lay the foundation stone which will be a step towards realising the dream of a state-of-the-art film city," he said.
The land, which is currently under the Trinamool-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation, befits the setting of a film city with a small forest, dilapidated buildings and abandoned railway tracks.
Noted Tollywood director Haranath Chakraborty expressed happiness over the decision.
"It's a very good news. I am so happy. The age-long dream of a film city will soon be realised. The whole Bengali film industry including current and past stars will surely grace the historic occasion," he said.
Actor Dipankar Dey said: "I cannot describe how happy I am. When the project comes up, it will not only boost our cinema, but also generate employment which for me is the happiest thing. The credit goes to Banerjee for her efforts."

Green police to help manage Salt Lake traffic
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata-/Green-police-to-help-manage-Salt-Lake-traffic/articleshow/9521991.cms
Moving on the lines of Kolkata Police, the Bidhannagar municipality has decided to form its own team of Green Police to improve traffic management in Salt Lake. The decision was taken at a meeting of board of councillors on Saturday. Civic authorities said that green police will help in regulation of traffic, enforcement of traffic discipline and reduction of accidents.
The civic body is planning to appoint about 200 persons to work as green police and they would be posted at all busy junctions and places of the township.
"Those who will be appointed for this job will bear logos of their corporate entities. Money raised from sponsorship advertisements on uniforms of these green policemen and women will be spent on paying their salaries," said municipality chairperson Krisna Chakraborty. Authorities are expecting to collect about Rs one crore every year through sponsorships.

Mamata unveils Gitanjali Stadium in Tagore's honour (http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=111480)
Kolkata, Aug 9 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday unveiled a stadium named after the Nobel winning collection of poems Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore. She also said the city will get another stadium on the lines of Netaji Indoor Stadium.
"The stadium could only be named Gitanjali. What better way to pay homage to Tagore on his 150th birth anniversary than by naming this stadium after Gitanjali which got him the Nobel (prize). The centennial anniversary of it is also approaching," said Banerjee after unveiling the stadium built on 4.5 acre at Kasba in the South Eastern fringe of the city.
Gitanjali, a collection of poems by the bard, was first published in England in 1912. A year later Tagore created history by becoming the first Asian to win the Nobel prize in literature.
Banerjee said the stadium will not only promote sports in the area but will also enhance its beauty. "Along with cricket and football several indoor games can be played here. I have also heard domestic games would also be organised here. The Kolkata Municipal Development Authority is in talks with people concern for setting up sports academies here as well."
She also said an indoor stadium similar to Netaji Indoor will come up in the city soon. "A stadium having the same 14,000 capacity of Netaji Indoor will come up soon. The government is looking for a suitable plot. All these stadiums will help in the promotion of sports in the state."

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090407/jsp/bengal/story_10786287.jsp
From April 2009
Mamata Banerjee today left behind her guards and marched through a CPM pocket in her constituency to instil confidence among party workers who had complained of “harassment” by cadres.
“I started a movement in Rajdanga way back in 1985 as an MP of Jadavpur (the constituency under which the area came then) when the CPM was evicting refugees to grab land. I shall start a Singur-Nandigram-style agitation here if the CPM dares to grab land to build malls in the name of development,” she told the meeting.
The Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) had acquired the Rajdanga playground nearly five years ago for a stadium, a swimming pool and a mall despite opposition from a section of local residents.

I think a ground of that size can only be used for sports like Kabadi, kho-kho, high jump etc. And I believe that when our CM mentioned that she expects the facility to be used for international events, I assume that she meant sports like kabadi. More popular sports like cricket, football are out of question - so a capacity of 4500 should be more than enough I guess. I also feel that an international standard indoor swimming pool/stadium could have been a better bet there with the available space for the ground.

The ground size is not fit for a cricket match. CAB was approached and they turned down the offer of conducting any match at any level. Similarly, IFA said that the ground size is not even fit for conducting lower division football matches. They might consider it for nursery football. Clearly, hosting cricket and football matches was not the main intention behind the overall plan. As I mentioned earlier, they could have planned for a swimming pool there - not that its too late for that - it can be converted to one even now provided the right intentions are there. Now with the present scheme of things I think they can think of turning that into a Fun and Entertainment zone for the Mall goers :) Who knows they might already be planning for one two years down the line!

Why not construct Eden Gardens-equivalent stadium in Durgapur/Darjeeling/Silliguri? Given the need for Tier II/Tier III city development in WB, building international Eden Gardens (Tagore Gardens:lol:) stadium in a smaller town seems a good idea.
samrat_m August 10th, 2011, 08:04 PM debayan, it's a very small ground. it is good for holding district level tournaments at most. if cricket is played there acropolis would lose all its shiny windows in a day.
Right to the point. The fact is no international stadiums in the world (for athletics, football, cricket, or any other sport requiring space) have any highrise building (like Acropolis) at so close vicinity. The areas around stadiums worldwide are kept absolutely free & open. There needs to be a good amount of boundary space after the galleries as well. Also need space for crowd inflow & outflow.
This one lacks on all aspects. The stands of this one is just next to the mall. So it is out of question to hold any international or even domestic level matches of such sports.
Plus such a paltry capacity (4500) is a mockery.
Ideally they should have designed an indoor stadium in that small space for selective sports but best of facilities.
However, I feel that probably Tennis is the only outdoor sport which can be hosted here. Given its size, they can chalk out the rectangular court easily. So good tennis tournaments can be hosted here. Of course, need to have best of amenities for the same and impeccable ground conditions of grass as tennis is totally dependant on it.

Usually tennis stadiums have more than one courts. I doubt there's enough space for that in this case.

dayalbaba August 11th, 2011, 04:43 PM not that there's anything bad about that. we do need good facilities for school level sports.
saurav_68 August 11th, 2011, 07:03 PM How this "Gitanjali" stadium can be upgraded:
1)Install modern floodlights in a circular fashion, not in poles.
2)Install bucket seats all over the gallery.
3)Cover the ground with good quality AstroTurf.
4)Make a good quality modern press box.
etc. etc.
I think this stadium can be used for hockey.Hockey ground does not need a large space.

"We can develop civic infrastructure like roads, streetlights, water supply etc of our small towns like Chandannagore, Baruipur, Raghunathpur, Chandrokana, Dum Dum, North Dum Dum and others. There are 126 such small towns in Bengal," Hakim said.
The minister said the urban development department will prepare project report and send it to the centre for approval so that World Bank aid could be sought. "A World Bank team will again come to the city for a joint survey with officials of the urban development department. Today, we only had preliminary talks on this and more meetings on this issue will follow," the minister said. The minister said the government has already distributed over Rs 600 crore to municipalities and civic bodies for developing civic infrastructure in their respective areas.

^^I too hope so. But the problem with this type of development model is a watch on the proper utilization of funds over the period of time. I wonder if WB monitor how and where the money is spent or is state/municipal bodies that do that.

The West Bengal government is contemplating setting up a health bank to reach basic medical benefits to remote corners and make treatment easily available to all sections of the people.
Health department sources said the proposal to set up the health bank were discussed in a meeting of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the health secretary, director of medical education and other high officials during her visit to ‘Swasthya Bhavan’ (health department headquarter) today.
Mr. Banerjee, who holds the health portfolio, discussed plans and programmes with the department officials who presented a ‘Health Vision’ for five years.
Under the plans, a superspeciality hospital on the lines of AIIMS in Delhi will be set up at Kalyani in Nadia district and for which land has been located, the sources said.
A major hospital is planned in Darjeeling apart from 10 big hospitals in the state in next five years.
The health department has also plans to provide special health infrastructural facilities for people of tribal Jangalmahal region, sources said.

^^Someone probably needs to dump him in that splash pool again :) Our municipal bodies do stupid things and waste public money and KMC is no different, the level of stupidity varies though. It is common sense that there should be a footpath first before having decorative stuff on them. They are doing a good job in the Alipur/New Alipur area where paver blocks are getting put along with a small section of the footpath left for trees. The positive is in large parts of Alipur, there is no hawker menace, so the purpose is served.
The other day on the stretch opposite to the bhawanipore cemetary I noticed a interesting thing. There is a slum leading to a bridge over Tolly Nallah where the dwellers had road facing slums and anyone passing can see them doing all kinds of daily stuff , being a sore for everyone's eyes. Now KMC has put a wall preventing their view from the road and are paving that stretch with paver blocks. They can now do their stuff on the 'other' side facing a back road.

That's good, but most of the portion of kolkata is badly affected by slums and hawkers,so first of all priority should be to remove the hawkers and rehabilitate the slums by making some township for them and then remove all slums and make a anti slum task force and anti hwakering force .Then they should renovate the foot paths.KMC gets a huge amount of money from the central government for rehabilitating the slums by proper townships, but where those huge amount of money goes,in the pockets of the Councillors or in the party funds?
If the money is properly used there will be no slums in kolkata and the other places in West Bengal or surroundings of kolkata.
Putting a wall over the slum is not a good solution.

the problem is everyone in Bengal thinks he or she is a specialist. Someone must convince Mamata and other politicians that she or her team members are not experts in bus stop (with or without Rabindranath's poems) or lamp post design. there are institutes that train students in these things. someone needs to drill this into the heads of our politician leaders that most of the work must be outsourced to the real experts. I am not sure if they are idiots or with outsized egos.
AbhishekDatta August 19th, 2011, 05:26 AM Rs 1000cr research hub plan
A STAFF REPORTER
Physicist Mani Bhaumik on Thursday announced that his educational foundation was going to set up a Rs 1,000 crore research institute in the city in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur.
Bhaumik met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Writers’ Buildings in the afternoon to discuss the project. The institute will be located near Ruby hospital on the EM Bypass.
“The institute will be a joint venture of Mani Bhaumik Educational Foundation and IIT Kharagpur. It will be a research wing of the IIT, where students can pursue master’s and doctoral programmes. We expect it to become a seat of intellectual advancement,” Bhaumik said after the meeting.
An IIT Kharagpur official said an official announcement in this regard was likely on Monday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be on the campus that day for the convocation.
Bhaumik, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, added that his foundation had procured 15 acres of land for the project and that he had requested the chief minister for another 10 acres.
“She said the state government does not have land in that area at present. But she assured me that the state government would help in every possible way to make the project successful,” said the physicist.
About five years ago, Bhaumik had sought the previous Left Front government’s help for a similar project. The foundation alone was to execute it then.
An injunction was passed against the project after the fisheries department alleged that a water body had been filled up in the 15-acre project area off the EM Bypass.
Bhaumik on Thursday claimed that the issue had been solved. “I do not want to look back. The new chief minister appeared very positive about the project,” he said.
The chief minister’s office did not comment on the meeting between Mamata Banerjee and Bhaumik, which lasted around 40 minutes.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
TOI (pg5, 20 August 2011)
Kolkata: Days after TOI reported about the dreadful condition of E M Bypass, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said the stretch will be repaired before the pujas once the rain stops.
While laying the foundation stone of a waterbody beautification programme at Patuli, Mamata said the E M Bypass stretch was indeed in very bad condition. “I was consulting with mayor Sovan Chatterjee about the pathetic condition of the road. It is true that the rain has terribly affected the stretch. Work cannot be taken as long as the rain continues. However, the Bypass is a very important connector and it will be repaired before the pujas, right after the rain stops. If required, the Bypass stretch will be repaired by laying mastic asphalt,” the chief minister said.
The CM added that the government was trying to develop the E M Bypass by widening the stretch and installing more streetlights. “We are trying to widen the stretch,” she said. The government was also trying to improve the city’s traffic system, she added.
Apart from giving stress on repairing E M Bypass, Mamata said the government will do whatever necessary to save the waterbodies in the city and the entire state. “Many waterbodies have already been filled up. Waterbodies and ponds need to be saved and preserved. We have several such plans to develop the waterbodies into eco-tourism spots. In Rajarhat, we are developing a 480-acre waterbody into an eco-tourism park,’ she said.
The CM also said that her government, which is only three-months old, has already generated about 1 lakh new jobs. “We will soon release a book on our 75 days of work performance,” she said.

AbhishekDatta August 21st, 2011, 06:04 AM Chittaranjan hospital to get new building
TNN | Aug 21, 2011, 03.14AM IST
KOLKATA: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee seems to be on track for an immediate upgrade of the healthcare system in the state. It has been learnt that Mamata, who is also in charge of the health and family welfare department, has given a go-ahead to develop the infrastructure of Chittaranjan Seva Sadan and build a new building to accommodate more patients.
Soon after coming to power, Mamata had visited the hospital for a surprise check and during the visit, she was apprised of the necessity to develop the hospital's infrastructure. Hospital authorities had informed her about a 25-year-old dilapidated building that could house additional wards if renovated. Within days, they received a green signal from the CM.
Chittaranjan Seva Sadan and Sishu Sadan will now have a new building coming up behind the main block of the hospital and will house more wards and accommodate additional beds.
At present, the hospital covers around 14,556 square metre of built-up space and has 240 beds.
"It has been decided that the building will be demolished. The demolition order has been passed and will be executed soon," said the hospital's medical superintendent and vice-principal, Dr Ashis Kumar Mukhopadhyay. The project plan, however, needs to cleared by the finance department following which the hospital authorities will decide on the structure of the new building.

AbhishekDatta August 22nd, 2011, 01:20 AM CM pats Purnendu for investment
OUR BUREAU
Calcutta, Aug. 21: Mamata Banerjee today patted Purnendu Chatterjee, the chairperson of The Chatterjee Group (TCG) and one of the principal shareholders of Haldia Petrochemicals, for investing in the state “when no one was willing” to do so and indirectly blamed the Left government for “framing” him.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of an IT park to be built by TCG at Salt Lake’s Sector V, the chief minister said: “Purnendu Chatterjee was the first to come to Bengal when no one was willing to invest. Purnendubabu jokhon elen tokhon onake share ar governing body issue-te fanshiye deoa holo (when Purnendubabu arrived, he was framed on shares and governing body issues).”
The chief minister was probably referring to the legal tangle TCG got embroiled in with the Left government over the control of Haldia Petrochemicals.
TCG had complained to the Company Law Board against the state when the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government scrapped a share sale agreement in 2005 after the company allegedly failed to buy out the shares. The case then went to Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, where a judgment is awaited.
Chatterjee had claimed that he owned the majority stake in the Rs 6,100-crore venture but the previous government had denied this. According to the registered records of the company, the government still owns the majority stake. The Left government had offered Chatterjee control of Haldia Petrochemicals at least thrice but the process was never completed. The previous administration had blamed him for not investing when needed.
But after Mamata took charge of the government, the situation has begun to change. The new government has allowed Chatterjee to become chairperson of Haldia Petrochemicals on an interim basis and decided to let TCG have the final say in HPL matters.
For the IT park project at Sector V, TCG will invest Rs 450 crore to build two 17-storey towers. Another Rs 250 crore will be brought in by the companies that take up space, taking the entire investment to Rs 700 crore. Around 10,000 jobs are likely to be generated. Bengal Eco Intelligence Park will have one million square foot of built up space.
“We will start construction soon and hope to complete the project in three years,” Chatterjee said.
Ironically, the Left government had allocated land for the project.
“Bengal will surely turn around and its golden era will come soon. In a year, 2.31 lakh jobs are likely to be created. Industry will grow. Bengal will show the way in tourism,” the chief minister said at today’s programme. The government, Mamata said, has created nearly 80,000 jobs in the public sector in less than three months.
“To help industry, we have created a core group with representatives from industry and the chambers of commerce. The industrial clusters in Sankrail, Maheshtala and Falta are almost ready. We will provide a single window to set up industry and the number of forms to be filled for this purpose will be brought down from 99 to 15. I want to further reduce it to seven,” she said.
“In such a short span, we have been able to end the hill impasse. We have decided to recruit 10,000 people from Jungle Mahal for the police force. We have introduced e-governance initiatives in government departments,” she said.
Business delegations “from Singapore, UK, Japan and the US” have expressed their keenness to invest in the state, the chief minister added.
According to her, the Left government had given away pattas and forest land for industrial development, “resulting in problems for investors such as the Jindals”.
Suncity August 23rd, 2011, 12:41 AM City venue for IIT research
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1110823/jsp/calcutta/story_14410356.jsp
IIT Kharagpur will open an advanced research centre near Ruby General Hospital and a science park in Rajarhat.
Damodar Acharya, the director of the country’s oldest IIT, announced on Monday the decision to open the city campuses.
The research centre, likely to be operational in three years, will be named after physicist Mani Bhaumik, an alumnus of the institute who will donate $150 million (Rs 682.5 crore) to set up the hub.
“The centre will cost $300m, of which Bhaumik will donate $150m. He will donate the amount in addition to the 15 acres on which the centre will come up,” said the director.
“The centre is being named after Bhaumik in recognition of his pioneering work on laser technology.... The Mani Bhaumik Advanced Research Centre, Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur, will be of world class standards, focussing on two areas — bio-informatics and energy science.”
Bhaumik, who did his PhD from the IIT, said: “One of the main goals for setting up the centre is to produce Noble prize winners.... It is no less than a dream come true for me.”
The “best faculty” from across the globe will work at the centre to carry out advanced research in areas like cancer and auto-immune diseases, said Bhaumik.
The researchers will be awarded doctorate degrees by the IIT.
Bhaumik had met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Writers’ Buildings last Thursday to discuss the project.
The director said the IIT was the country’s first institute to open centres with contribution from the alumni. The Vinod Gupta School of Management, set up by another IIT Kharagpur alumnus, is one such example.

I think forumers should post a brief English translation of any Bengali news that is posted here. That way people who do not know Bengali can understand what is going on in the city/state.
Brief translation:
IT minister Partha Chatterjee has met IT honchos in Bangalore. Infosys has said that it will start construction of its campus within a month or two of getting the land along with minimum infrastructure (built by the state govt).
Wipro has also said that it will start work on its campus as soon as some minor problems, related to the land allotted, are resolved.
ITC Infotech has also asked for 50 acres of land near Rajarhat to set up a campus.

Kolkata: While CERN strives to find the God Particle, you can be present physically at the Big Bang moment. Our Science City is getting a mammoth ‘evolution centre’ that will bring to life the evolution of man andthecreation of theuniverse.
Construction has already started. Since the projectisthebrainchildof prime minister Manmohan Singh, the 60,000-sq-ft exhibition islikely to meetthe2012deadline.
The Evolution Centre will trace life from the beginning of the universe till the time man started walking upright. Instead of diagrams, charts and photographs, this will be a completely animated exhibition where the visitor will be given the experience of being present at situations that existed millions of years back. Through 3-D images, multimedia, simulations and moving robots, specially createdfor a life-likeeffect, the Evolution Centre promises to be thefirstof itskindin thecountry.
It will give a real-life experience of the creation of lifethroughsinglecelled microorganisms, the evolution of dinosaurs, the advent of mammals and finally the advent of man.
Science City is a part of the National Council of Science Museums, which reports to the Union ministry of culture looked after by the prime minister himself. Towards the beginning of the year, Kolkata scientists forwarded the proposal for an Evolution Centre. The project cost was estimated at Rs 20 crore and the ministry has justsanctionedthefunds.
“This exposition shall be divided into eight sections, each depicting an evolutionary change. In most partsthe visitor will not have to walk, but will be “transported”. Pneumatically and electrically controlled animated models shall be on display with simulated near natural ambience in each section,” saidArijitDuttachoudhary, director of ScienceCity.
Science City already boasts of 100 lifesize robotic dinosaurs, which have not yet been duplicated anywhere else in the country. The idea of an evolution centre germinated from here. Through multimedia shows, animated models and audio-visuals the story of evolution of life from primordial soup in the beginning to early chemicals, first micro organisms, multicellular organisms, invertebrates, fishes, reptilesof prehistoric period, dinosaurs, mammals and flowering plants and ice age mammals will be told. “Theoretically we have all read about this in textbooks or have even seen multimedia shows, butour Centrewouldbe unique in giving the visitor the real life experience of being present at such pre-historicscenes,” Duttachoudhary added.
The Human story shall be depicted in a 360degreePanorama with11 meter high visuals and digital presentations. The whole story shallis narratedwiththehelp of high resolution visuals and a dynamic digital show. There will be a plethora of three dimensional life-size models in the foreground to supplement the story on human evolution.
Therewill alsobe a showon Science and Technology Heritage of India. This section shall showcase India’s contributions in the fields of agriculture, architecture, medicine, metallurgy, astronomy, mathematics, perfumery, ship building andwater power.

Its not a tunnel road but a flyover, such kind of alignment is not possible for a flyover. But, if this project actually get implemented it would be a huge relief for people from East, Northern suburbs as well.

OUR BUREAU
Shahid Minar is set to get a fresh coat of paint and new lights.
The monument topped the government’s list of city landmarks in need of a facelift. The chief minister wanted to hold a cultural show on the Shahid Minar ground on Mahalaya (September 27).
According to the blueprint of change, a pathway with a low-height fencing will be built around the structure. The top of the monument will be coloured in keeping with the chief minister’s wishes.
“We can work out a Tricolour pattern for the top. The body will remain white though,” said a PWD engineer.
PWD secretary A.R. Bardhan said the ground level would be raised to prevent waterlogging.
The company looking after the monument’s illumination will be told to light it both from inside and outside, said Nirmal Sarkar, the chief engineer of the PWD. At present, there are no lights inside.

Shahid Minar to sport a new look soon
TNN | Sep 2, 2011, 03.33AM IST
KOLKATA: The state government plans to deck up Shahid Minar to convert it into an attractive tourist spot. The government is mulling the proposal to let tourists enter into the Minar. At present, visitors are not allowed inside after a man attempted to commit suicide from the Minar.
The towering structure is going to have a new coat of paint and will have decorative lights. The new illuminative lights are expected to turn Shahid Minar into one of the most picturesque tower in the heart of the city. It is a 48-metre high structure that is a combination of Turkish, Egyptian and Syrian architecture.
On Thursday, PWD secretary A R Bardhan visited the monument along with some engineers and planned to decorate the tower. He said that stairs inside the tower will also be illuminated so that visitors to the monument can have an easy access to the top. He said that they are going to landscape the ground around Shahid Minar and fence it. However, before painting the structure, the approval of the heritage commission will be taken.
For the tourists, history of the monument will be written at the base of the monument that was built in 1848 by David Ochterlony to commemorate his victory in Nepal War and after independence it was renamed as Sahid Minar.

AbhishekDatta September 2nd, 2011, 06:26 PM Not sure if things made up but seems like a welcome change....
Change of guard brings welcome relief
Sep 2, 2011, 03.44AM IST
KOLKATA: Traffic movement got smoother on the first day of the change of guard in policing in the city. The makeover in traffic management, with Kolkata Police's jurisdiction getting extended by 100 sq km to include the entire Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area, succeeded to bring perceptible changes on Thursday, at least the first experience of the commuters says so.
On the whole, the added area witnessed an attempt at better policing. Nine police stations of West Bengal Police were split into 17 Kolkata police stations. Ten traffic guards were created with a deputy commissioner (traffic) heading the force.
"It is a historic day for Kolkata Police. We managed to carry out the chief minister's decision of taking over the entire KMC area in the shortest possible time. We will strive hard to keep up with the expectation of people," said Kolkata Police commissioner R K Pachnanda. The city police chief visited all the new police stations and gave impetus on better police-public relations.
The first thing that Kolkata Police attempted was to restrict the movement of goods vehicles and push all auto-rickshaw stands into alleys so that the main thoroughfares were free for cars and buses. "We also issued strict instructions to sergeants so that they just do not allow more than four persons in an auto. On the first day, we were a bit lenient. From Friday, we will start to impose penalty," said a Thakupukur traffic guard officer.
"During the initial days, our focus will be to clear major thoroughfares like Diamond Harbour Road, James Long Sarani, Mahatma Gandhi Road and Netaji Subhas Road for smoother traffic movement. We will gradually expand our focus to arterial roads," said joint commissioner (traffic) Jawed Shamim.
There were hitches, too, on the first day. Slow-moving vehicles like cycle rickshaws often caused chaos. "This is a grey area to us. In the core Kolkata police area, cycle rickshaws are banned. But there is government order on this. So we were at a loss in controlling them. We tried not to allow them on major thoroughfares," said an officer.
The other drawback was the prominent absence of stop-lines and zebra crossings. "This led to erratic movement and we have to set things right. Signalling is of course an issue. Many key crossings are without signals. A road like MG Road is so narrow that a constable controls traffic from a roadside tea stall. If he stands in the middle of the road, either he will be run over or traffic movement in both directions would be hindered," said another officer.
Since the morning, there was enthusiasm among residents with the new policing system. People were found standing on the sidewalks to witness the difference. "Bengal police did everything but remained ineffective whatsoever. Kolkata Police, on the contrary, made a difference on the first day. Morning shows the day. Hope they sustain these positive changes," said Karunamoy Goswami, a lawyer, who lives in Thakurpukur.

I think this is the Debrupayan Nagar project (http://www.drhcl.com/).
If it is, then the project ran into trouble (2004):

OK. but please vote - 12 floors or 15 floors as minimum.
I had selected 12 floors as it is generally regarded as the minimum benchmark for

Sector V upgrade blueprint
A STAFF REPORTER
The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) on Tuesday announced a slew of measures to turn Sector V into a “mini Singapore”, following which IT companies in the tech township rolled out their own wish list.
Metro has been highlighting the pathetic civic conditions in the tech hub. The roads are in poor shape, with mulitple encroachments and rampant illegal parking. Police kiosks in the 24X7 township are often under lock and key and it’s common to find malfunctioning streetlights.
“The first impression is the last impression,” said urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim. “There is a big disconnect between the swanky offices and the roads leading to them.”
NDITA plans to solve these problems in two years. “Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned to put a coat of mastic asphalt on the 4km-long Salt Lake bypass. The work will start immediately after Durga Puja,” said NDITA chairman Alapan Bandyopadhyay in an interaction between public representatives, officials and various stakeholders.
Apart from Hakim and Bandyopadhyay, MLA and NDITA vice-chairman Sujit Bose and Bidhannagar Municipality chairperson Krishna Chakraborty were present.
Bandyopadhyay said space had been identified at a transport department garage to build a multi-layered parking lot. He added that NDITA had agreed to pay for the deployment of 50 civic volunteers to manage traffic.
The NDITA chairman also announced plans to ease the process of setting up a venture in Sector V.
“We have formed a plan sanction committee that includes officials from various departments,” he said. “An investor will not have to run from one department to another to get plans sanctioned. There’ll be a single-window system.”
The Sector V entrepreneurs also rolled out a wish list.
“Sector V should have a dedicated disaster management team. A crèche would bring relief to working mothers. We request NDITA to consider these requests,” said Kalyan Kar, a member of the Sector V Industries Forum.

I was contemplating on a thread to integrate all highrise buildings of Kolkata -
12 floors & above / 35 mts & above
Existing & Upcoming
Single Block, Complex & Township
Residential & Commercial
to form a "Tall buildings Guide" sort of a thing. It will have lists, little infos & pics of all such projects in a particular order, which will serve as quick referance guide.
I already have some material at hand to start with.
Please suggest
As per Emporis, ^^ is the parameter to term a building "highrise" and it is internationally agreed, so we should stick to it.
One funny thing, once in 2006 i wrote to Emporis people to add me as their local photographer & information provider for Calcutta, as their info was really backdated. But till date did not receive any reply.
This DB if made would really be handy, we can have Sub - Categories as mentioned above. I can contribute some pics too , if you want.

dayalbaba September 8th, 2011, 11:17 PM AAI has approved the masterplan for converting behala airfield into a satellite airport that can take small 70 seater aircraft like ATR. that would cost 65-70 crores and AAI would fund it. but they feel the roads in behala are too narrow and have asked the govt to solve that problem, either widening the road or a fly-over. manish gupta has responded with a proposal for a 1.3 km flyover connecting taratala to parnasree which AAI has accepted.
it would cost 40-50 crores but state govt is looking for ways to fund it.

trnsltn: Last week AAI has cleared the behala airport project. For the ease of the passengers a 1.5km elevated road would be made from taratala state garrage to Pornoshree as the roads are very narrow. The elevated road would cost around 40-50 crores, which would be entirely borne by the State Govt. Work will start once the state coffers have the money to spend. The Airport expansion work would be done by AAI. There are plans to use this Sattelite Airport for 72 seater flights having distance duration of max 2.5 hrs.

^^I do not mean to disappoint but there are challenges here besides just the cost. The distance may be close to 2km and not 1.3 or 1.5km. Upen Banerjee road ( the road leading to the airport boundary) is about 1km long and from there to the bus garage is 1km more if one takes the normal route. Properties will have to be acquired for the stretch from garage to Upen banerjee road as well..
Instead why can they not build an alternate road to connect Upen banerjee road , which can be widened to almost 4 lanes with everyone's blessing. Additionally, will state govt shell out 50crore for a flyover when the expansion is just worth 70 odd crores ?
Sumanb September 9th, 2011, 09:15 AM Valid point ... but now the buzzword is to have either elevated road or tunnel !!

Again a wrong priority by AAI. This was a runway by Behala flying club of only 3100ft length. No way passenger loaded ATRs could land here ( may be some 18 seater aircraft could handle this runway ). Apron area nonexistent, no terminal building. I think AAI should develop Camp Kancha airstrip. All they have to do is to negotiate with Air force. It has a 7000 ft ( almost ) hardened runway. But unlike Behala airstrip, Camp Kancha is not near downtown Kolkata. But there are scopes to expand while Behala airstrip could not be expanded.

KOLKATA: Beautification work below the EM Bypass-VIP Road flyover that recently opened to traffic has again got stuck in a muddle due to a wrangling between Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and the Kolkata traffic police. The latter wants to set up a police check-post near the Hudco crossing and wants a piece of land below the flyover for it.
Several trees were chopped off near Ultadanga along a stretch of the EM Bypass measuring a few 100 meters. There was also a traffic island at Hudco crossing that had to be demolished for the flyover project. Authorities had then planned to undertake compensatory plantation and beautification work below the flyover after it was constructed. Though the flyover was thrown open to traffic earlier this year, the authorities decided to start beautification and compensatory plantation work after the elections were over and the new government was formed.
Accordingly, the authorities floated tenders and beautification work began. However, it was then that the problem cropped up. KMDA says it stopped the work within days of starting it after Kolkata traffic police asked for a portion of land to shift its police booth from Ultadanga to the very spot.
The matter is now stuck with a task force committee. "The committee is yet to hold a meeting to discuss this issue," a spokesperson said. Work will not progress unless the land issue is sorted.
Traffic police officials said that they just want some land to shift the traffic booth from the existing spot at Ultadanga. "We just want to shift the traffic police outpost to that spot and have submitted a letter to the KMDA authorities," said DC Traffic Dilip Banerjee.
Rules state that if one tree is cut for any development work, five trees have to be planted as a compensatory measure though not at the same spot. It has been noticed on quite a few occasions that many trees have been chopped off to make way for development projects but not followed up with proper compensatory plantation.

Three IT hubs on table
OUR CORRESPONDENT
Durgapur, Sept. 20: The government plans to set up three IT hubs in south Bengal with the possible participation of companies like Infosys and Wipro, industries minister Partha Chatterjee said today.
“The government has decided to set up three IT hubs in Burdwan’s Asansol and Durgapur and Bankura’s Borjora,” Chatterjee said at a meeting of local industrialists in Durgapur.
“In Karnataka, I saw IT hubs located almost 200km away from the state capital. It is not necessary that such hubs have to be near Calcutta. If we can enhance the infrastructure and logistics across the state, such IT parks can be set up away from the city,” Chatterjee added.
Taking a swipe at the previous Left Front government, he said: “Our emphasis is on developing infrastructure. I don’t know why the former government did not do so.”
“Industrialists, executives or quality talent will not come to work if there are no amenities, entertainment and other logistics,” he said.
He also urged the industrialists to take over at least one closed factory while setting up new ventures in the state. “Around 55,000 big, medium and small factories are closed in Bengal. So, I would urge the industrialists who wants to set up new plants in Bengal to take responsibility of at least one closed factory,” he said.
Chatterjee said land would not be a problem. “We are preparing a land bank with the help of those people willing to give up their barren plots in backward areas like Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore and some north Bengal districts. The details of such plots will be put up on our websites for industrialists to choose,” he said. Land can also be purchased directly, he added.

Diversified company Emami, plans to pump in Rs 2,000 crore in the healthcare sector over the next two years. Emami-controlled Advance Medicare and Research Institute (Amri) Hospitals Ltd, has earmarked Rs 1,750-crore investment to set up seven hospitals across north and east India. Besides, the company is also considering an additional Rs 300-crore investment to add more beds at existing hospitals.
Amri is setting up four hospitals with a total of 1,300 beds in West Bengal. Other projects include a 500-bed hospital at Rajarhat, 300-bed at Siliguri and North Kolkata and 200-bed at Burdwan. Presently, Amri has a capacity of 1,000 beds across three hospitals at Kolkata, in Dhakuria, Salt Lake and Mukundapur. The projects are likely to be funded through a mix of debt and equity. Emami holds 66 per cent stake in Amri and the balance is held by Shrachi Group and the West Bengal government.

^^yes, in fact it will cross over a few junctions and end up somewhere before Haldirams. I know a senior official in KMDA and he indicated that funds are an issue. This one should be relatively easy to build with no twists, turns or land acquisitions ; only traffic management during the construction is a challenge. Hope this sees the light of day soon
