Aren't you putting the capacity of some of these stadiums a little high?

For instance, I've never seen La Bombonera acreditted with a capacity greater than 60.000 before. And the River Plate stadium I've only seen around 56.000. Also the Vélez stadium is usually attriobuted a capacity of around 50.000...

I like Bombonera a lot though, and the new stadiums look really good. By the way, when did Racing Club stadium get a roof?

1998 or 1999 I think

and the capacity is ok, I'm not sure in River Plate stadium, but the capacity is 75.000 or 80.000

Its basically great and poor venues at the same time.

Some of them must be fantastic places when full but really, they probably rarely are. Most would appear old and very outdated for facilities etc and I doubt any of them would pass european safety standards.

Ciudad de la Plata stadium is my fave out of them.

Scary Stadiums though.

I've watched argentinian football...when there's a goal all the fans run to the fence surrounding the pitch....lord knows why....it's not as if they're gonna see anything extra.

La Bombonera is spectacular. Very different and it works like a charm. I'd pick it for the 'transplant a stadium to your country' thread. Or possibly Westfalenstadion at a push.

they all look dated or are too far away from the pitch, or both. unimpressive stuff, which is a shame considering argentina is such a big footballing nation.

They can fit 65,000 people in Martin Palermo's wife? That requires a LOT of butter.

On a serious note; I like the stadia. They're all unique and look intimidating and that's what a stadium should be. I particularly like the picture of the floodlights on the Rosario Central photo.

Estudiantes played Manchester United in La Bombonera in 1968 (or 69) in front of 70,000 who showered United with rocks.

Hi! this stadium is used by Club atletico Independiente in Argentina.I the first stadium of concrete made in Argentina and is about to be remodelated.

The stadium now with a capacity of 59.000.was buildt in 1928.

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/2074/avellanedaviseracemente5cs.jpg

When the remodelation finish it would look like this and will have a capacity of 48.000 seated and 10.000 standing.

I do not have plans.

The Estudiantes de La Plata Stadium will have a capacity of 20.000 spectators and the Independiente Stadium (Libertadores de América) will have one of 43.000.

BTW, i will clarify that the big stadiums are approximately 50 years old and were reformed about 30 years ago.

During rivalry games in American college football the home teams fans will often rush the field if they win (and sometimes bring down the goal posts). In college basketball its much the same. And it is a blast to rush the court! It really never happens in the pros though.

I always like how they keep the Anglicised names (despite recent history): Chaco Forever; All Boys; Banfield; Newell's Old Boys; River Plate; Boca Juniors; Racing Club; Velez Sarsfield; Nueva Chicago; and so on. This must have helped in no small way to create their famous reputation as being hard-edge clubs, the combination of Anglo and Castillian (or Castilglish or English Castle :D) words. I could imagine whenever the Copa Libertadores start when one of those clubs travel to other South American cities, the people in the cities they visit go "oh, here comes River", thinking that it's an English club visiting. ;)

But in all seriousness, they love their football over there. I must tip off my hat to them for "keeping it real", even if they do get a bit crazy there sometimes. :)

P.S. I also like how two clubs in Avallaneda despise each other and yet their grounds are so close to each other at the same time. :D

Because almost all the stadiums are in just a few cities. Only one city can host multiple venues, and even then it's capped at two. Buenos Aires has dozens, Avellaneda can use only one, La Plata only one, etc. Perhaps all the partidos around BA could host, but I don't think the biggest clubs are in those areas so capacity would be low.

They are supposed to be all seater (or at least gradually converting) since 31st December 2007 but the Argentinian football federation extended the limit date until this month. None of the teams has done it yet (completely):

Seats left to install:
Boca, 12.000
San Lorenzo, 7000
Argentinos, 5000
River, 4500
Vélez, 2500

Of course, die-hard supporters don't like it at all

You're wellcome.
Capacitites according to wikipedia & Worldstadiums are:
(Boca) Bombonera: 49.000 --> Would be reduced to 36.000 if all-seater.
(River) Monumental: 66.449
(San Lorenzo) Pedro Bidegain: about 44.000
(Vélez) José Amalfitani: 49.540
(Argentinos) Diego Armando Maradona: 24.600

I don't know the other new capacities in case they convert into all-seater.

the rule is suposed to start next year ( but you never know, this is argentina), and the independiente's stadium was going to open around august of 2008, so i believe their plan was to leave the terraces for half a year and then put seats once every 2 rows in 2009. but they got delayed and i think they will finish like in november...

Kazetuner, I read about two years ago that both 1st division teams in La Plata still use their own stadiums and not Estadio Unico de La Plata. Is this still the case?

actually they have been using the Estadio Unico for more than two years. Gimnasia LP re-opened their stadium in the last match of the season, they changed the wooden stands for concrete one. the stadium is still a dump anyways. And Estudiantes LP, has got a plan for a new stadium, but the design hasnt been aproved yet, the basic idea is a 20.000 seater. here is an old render of the project:

well, it really depends on who is playing there.
when estudiantes plays there is great. the fans use to carry a lot of flags and smoke flares to the stands, making a great show to see.

d6H2x4PiHFo

when Gimnasia uses the stadium is really nothing special. they're not doing well in the field (actually they never have, the club has 120 years old and has never won a single oficial tournament), so they dont get many people to see the matches.

What's the capacity? Will it be really 50K stadia as the render shows? I can't believe seemingly such a small stadia as that can hold as many as 50,000 people. Maybe a majority of stands will consist of terraces? And what's the estimated time of groudbreaking and completion (if available)?

And from the name LA NUEVA CIUDADELA, I guess it's an expansion from Estadio La Ciudadela. Am I right? Or Is it newly built on a different location or reconstructed on the same location?

According to the information, it would be an expansion of the existing stadium and it would have a capacity for 500 in suites, 9.250 with seats and 40.000 standing. It would also have an acclimatized swimming pool (for players use I guess), a patisserie and a dance hall (maybe a common room or similar).

9,250 seats and 40,000 standings? OMG, this is definately the extreme case I've ever seen in regards of proportions of standing places. Have you ever seen a stadium whose standing capacity is over 4 times bigger than seating capacity? Btw when is the expansion scheduled to start?

that project is from San Martín de Tucuman, a really small team that only god knows promoted to first division this season. so i think they were planning to do an expansion of their old stadium, but 50.000.... no way, that's not going to happen... se les subio la gloria a la cabeza

What is this? New ground for Chacarita Juniors?

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=398663

If so, what's the capacity? I found two figures which are assumed to be the capacity of the new stadium on the thread-starting post - 41,800 and 20,844. Which is the figure for capacity? Considering the stadium has two tiers in the rendering, I feel like 41,800 is more convincing than 20,844.....

And, from some photos in the thread it looks like the construction has already been started. Am I right?

i odnt know about the capacity though

Above is the remark of the thread-starter. Isn't the capacity mentioned in it?

I tried using Google Translator to get a rough meaning of the paragraph. It says,

The CD Funebrero sent some 3D images of the new stadium (will be built where the current Maipú Villa), whose presentation will be tomorrow at 21 in the club Almafuerte, St. Maarten. The total capacity of the stadium will be 41,800 or 20,844 spectators seated unemployed

Maybe whoever is seated in there will be fired from his/her job? LOL

well, there have been some news regarding 2 of the most important stadiums in Argentina:

The Estadio Único de La Plata will have a roof, acording to the Governor of the Buenos Aires Province. The strucuture and the membrane of the roof had been stored in the custom for a long time now, due to the government not being able to afford the taxes for the entry to the country. Last week, it was announced that a law project will be launched to enable the government to pay a much smaller amount of money for the materials. This render was released:

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1035/unicolaplatask0.jpg

La Bombonera, Boca Juniors' mistic stadium, will not have a fourth tier, as it was announced a few months ago. This project, that was to be started in November, was cancelled, and, instead, the Club is aiming on buying the 2 blocks of houses located behind the VIP Box wall. The idea is to torn it down, so the bowl can be completed, making it a 64.000 all-seater stadium.

Argentinian football is very popular in Slovene media. We have one sports channel with a lot of Southamerican football. They are transmitting important matches of Copa Libertadores and Southamerican qualifications for World Cup and all matches of Copa America.

Congratulations to Independiente! As I've heard they have already partially opened the new Estadio Libertadores and the inauguration game have been played end of November. Any pics?

They will get the first modern stadium in Argentina and perhaps this means the beginning of new era in construction or renovation of Argentinian stadiums.

It is the home of one of the "Five Giants" of Argentina, Racing Club. It was inagurated in 1950. Because of it architecture, it was called as "Cilindro(Cilinder)" or "Coliseo(Coliseum)". Its the only round stadium in Argentina.

I think brazilians teams are more frightened about the local support and atmosphere, when they play in Argentina. Brazilian stadiums are in worse conditions than argentinian ones. But I hope they will be renovated for the 2014 cup.

Yes. But the great atmosphere is also caused by argentinian stadiums.

Looking at pictures I've noticed that argentinian stadiums have
thousands of people in a small block (In Brazil, stadiums normally occupy large areas)
Normally "square" tiers ( In Brazil, most are round)
The high of the highest place in the tiers.(not so high in Brazil)
Closed stadium (I mean, it's not an U shaped, like some in Brazil)
Proximity between supporters and field (about 2-3 meters). As consequence the supporters are very next to the away team. And most of the times they're hostile.
The standing places next to the field. looks an army ready to war (In Brazil, not so close to the field, looks like supporters only).

Nevertheless, argentinian stadiums are not in a better condition than brazilian ones.
My friend went to Boca x Cruzeiro in La Bombonera last year. He said that there were as many stairways as there was in WTC, the W.C. had no sink or toilet, there were many pieces of iron exposed in the concrete, but they were blue/yellow painted, for example.
I've never been to Argentina and I don't know how the condition of other stadiums is, but considering La Bombonera belongs to a very rich and popular team, I could out in doubt the condition of stadiums in general.
Can you inform me better about this?

The thing is that football teams here are clubs, not commercial corporations like in Europe and most of the world. They are supported by members monthly fees, entrances for games and the sell of players, so most club can't really afford to build a new stadium. In fact, i think the only one with enough cash to do it is probably Boca Jrs:

Well, La Bombonera is a very old stadium. The stadium was painted last year. And during 2009, it will sufer an important general renovation. There are 2 different proyects. The most realistic, is to made a fourth stand al around the "D shape". The boxes sector will be kept.
The other proyect, consider buying the terrain bahave the boxes sector, and closing the D shape of the stadium, making la Bombonera an oval stadium

What are you saying? The majority of the budget of European teams comes from:
- TV rights from the domnestic league and UEFA Cup / Champions league
- Sponsoring (shirt/stadium etc)
- Exploiting the stadium
- Ticket sales
Argentinian clubs have all these streams of income as well. This has nothing to do with being a commercial institution or a club. By the way are you confusing the American franchise system with Europe? European football teams are very much clubs with their own tradition as well. Argentinian football clus also have all these streams of revenue and moreover they sell a lot of players to Europe. I have no idea what the budget of a club like Boca Juniors or River Plate is but I'm sure they would generate more ticket sales and stadium exploitation income if they'd have a modern stadium.

Apparently, Argentina (and possibly the whole of South America as well) doesn't know what a good-quality stadium is. A good-quality stadium has individual seating all around the bowl (no standing areas and no bare concrete steps), and sometimes the seats are covered with a roof. I say that all stadiums in Argentina need to be brought up to code in the future, especially all six of the stadiums that were used for the 1978 World Cup.

Argentinian stadiums are bad but maybe ther are people that prefere terraces instead of individual seeting. Why do you think in Germany (one of the richest countries in the world) they build complely new stadiums with standinfg areas??

Let's not make this an intercontinental pissing match, folks. Europeans have as much passion but are trying (in some ways too hard or incorrectly) to modernize their venues for safety and money. Suggesting they lack passion, or that their South American peers wouldn't love to have comparable venues, is decidedly narrow minded. There are cultural differences at play, but neither is wholly superior to the other.

Thanks for the photos, folks. Keep them coming.

Completely disagree. Part of a stadium's function is to be intimidating for the opposition. A packed standing area will always be louder than an all-seater area. It's why German stadiums have been re-introducing safe standing terraces. I've been to big derby games in England and Germany, and the atmosphere in Germany is far better. I (and a large percentage of football fans in England) would love to see terraces re-introduced in a controlled manner. In a perfect world, stadiums would offer something for everyone. Whether people want to stand or sit.

As I've said before, a lot of new stadiums feel horribly sterile and it's hard to get the crowd going. For example, the atmosphere at Southampton's old ground The Dell was brilliant, but in their new stadium St. Mary's it's cold and dull. It may be bigger, but it's got no character. It's hard to be an intimidating stadium, when it looks like 10 other stadiums in the same league.

If I want to watch football in a spotlessly clean environment, with plenty of space and leg-room, easy access and lot's of cheap refreshments, I can do that at home on TV. If I go to the game I am there for more than just the game on the pitch.

I stand by the comment I made in another thread, give me La Bombonera over The Emirates any time.

^^But UEFA has made all-seaters the standard, the law, the future, the economical solution and the preferred method of any sports venue (outside of Germany) following the ratification of the Taylor Report in the early 90s.

Argentine stadiums, however, have concrete steps way too narrow to fit individual seating into. It's only HALF as narrow as the concrete steps in normal all-seater stadiums.

In the Netherlands they are re introducing terraces also, on a small scale, but still.
I agree with SSE. There should be some for everyone. Personaly I just can´t sit and watch a game. I have to stand, even in a sitting area. There are many with me as in Holland it is quite normall to have a standing area behind the goal even when there are seats placed.

German stadia with terracing also have these smaller concrete steps in the terracing areas than in the seating areas, half as wide (~40cm) as in seating areas (~80cm). But that is no problem for a conversion into an all seater. They place the seats onto each second step, one step as legroom and one underneath the seat. So unless these concrete steps you're talking about in the terracing areas of Argentinian stadia are even smallen than 40 cm it is no problem at all for a permanent or temporary conversion into an Allseater.

But like some otheres here I prefer watching a game standing and I believe terracing greatly improves the stadiums atmosphere, the more terracing the better usually, even though there of course probably are some exceptions to that rule.

Campo Argentino de Polo

With a capacity of 15.000 people, in the middle of the concrete jungle, at just 10 minutes downtown, we can find the stadium with more capacity for Polo. It hosts the Campeonato Argentino de Polo every year since 1928, the worlds highest handicup tournament, which attracts celebrities and royalty from all around the planet.

It is sometimes also used for playing pato, hockey and some live concerts.
It was first built in 1928 and hosted the World Hockey Championship in 1978 and some venues for the 1950 Olympic Games.

In South America, even when the stadium has individual seating (we do have all-seaters here), the people prefers to stand up. Sorry, but its cultural, and trust me, we prefer this way...

Regarding this point, I've been in a number of away-ends at football grounds where they've simply bolted seats onto former terraces. It's very cramped, but it works (although many people stand up anyway, stewards notwithstanding)

You had Davis Cup 2008 final in Mar de Plata at Polideportivo Islas Malvinas which has capacity of 7500 but minimum for final is (as I know) 12.000.

Strange that the ITF made such a big exception.

¿???

Orfeo Superdomo (Córdoba)
Normalmente: 10 mil personas.
Para la Davis (finalmente se jugó en Mar del Plata): 12 mil personas.

Por otro lado al estadio de Mar del Plata se lo amplió hasta llegar a los 11500 espectadores cuando la ITF exige 12 mil.... no es una gran excepción.

1. Are there many athletic competitions in this stadium? Is the track really necessary? Which is usually the main athletic stadium in Buenos Aires?
2. How many seats have the stadium? What is the official capacity?

1- at the moment there's not any athletic competition. the track is not necessary right now but it used to be used in competitions.
2- the official capacity: 66.645 (all seater)
3- river plate it's on a economic crisis, and government talked about a renovation for Copa America but now it's discarded

I've asked for the capacity of El Monumental because there are different numbers. Some sources say the capacity is 57.921, another say it's 65.645. It's a big gap between those numbers.

Yes it is.

In Argentina women's hockey is very popular.
After football and with tennis and rugby is one of the most attractive sports.
Argentine girls practice almost exclusively the sport, as well as tennis (or volleyball).

the rule is suposed to start next year ( but you never know, this is argentina), and the independiente's stadium was going to open around august of 2008, so i believe their plan was to leave the terraces for half a year and then put seats once every 2 rows in 2009. but they got delayed and i think they will finish like in november...

actually they have been using the Estadio Unico for more than two years.
