it's all right. the design tries to hard to be cool though. it all depends on the cladding.

it's not ugly, it's original, unique.

I love the trees inside it, and how on one side the curves goes...

i'm gonna say like KrystOf ... Go la Défense!

Actually I like it a lot. If only the cladding would really be looking like aluminium, that would be cool! It reminds me of the Frankfurt Hoch Vier office tower.

Curvy towers seem to be in vogue in La Defense. Don't think too highly of this one, but at least will add some variety in contrast to the older slabs.

Thank goodness La Defense is a minor footnote in the urban story that is world's most beautiful city. Sometimes I think these developers are determined to go too Phar, just to dilute the city of light's sublime beauty. Shame.

It could be worse. It could be more 60s and 70s type of architecture, such as "commieblocks". Look at the HLMs in the Paris region. At least these towers are sleak and of much better material. Those kind of buildings are many times more an eyesore and they are much more numerous than the skyscrapers in La Défense which atleast are made of cool glass and such rather than boring conrete.

So to you beauty is only traditional and historical? Do you like the Parisian-style buildings built during the Haussmann period (mid and late 1800s) that dominate Paris, and the many early 1900s buildings that followed a lot of "Hausmann" standards and charateristics? I will assume you do since it dominates Paris and you are calling Paris the most beautiful city in the world, which you wouldn't do if you didn't like something that is dominant about it. Well, those buildings are so different from older 16th, 17th and 18th century houses that make up a big portion of the remaining Paris (Saint-Louis island, Le Marais, Belleville, Latin Quarter, etc). And that's different from what came even before, i.e. Gothic.

Changes are good. This includes sleak skyscrapers.

Some "improvements"(well, for some people lol) have been added compared to last time, therefore this is how "Majunga" tower would look like if it was to get built straight away.

Well its chances are very good actually! The building permit should be obtained in the next few weeks and its construction(if everything's alright) is due end 2010.
There are many towers planned in "La Défense" ("Air2","Carpe Diem","Générali","Phare","D2","Hermitage Plaza" my favourite lol,"Ava","First" drawing to a close,"Signal" likely to get cancelled though...,but also "Triangle" (intra muros as far as this one is concerned!)

I invite you to check them out if you want dude:

Futhermore, some big announcement(about some of those big projects) is to be made on 18 january by the EPAD (the organisation running the Défense district),I look forward to it :)

There are some threads in english mate(about Paris & its projects),you're very welcome to join us!Bye

Hmm.

I know about all those projects because I'm looking through them every single time they come up in this part of the forum. Most of them are indeed proposed which is quite sad. Except for the new Axa one which is almost finished and this 100m tower but I forgot the name of it.

Jex7844
January 8th, 2010, 01:15 PM
Sorry then...lol The 100m tower you're thinking about must be the "Tour Mozart".The other projects are "proposed" indeed but as I previously said,on 18 January many of them should be officially validated.
I dunno whether you understand french a bit or not but just in case here is an article added yesterday by a french comrade (Cyril) http://www.challenges.fr/magazine/strategie/0194.028152/la_dfense_srige_en_cit_financire.html.

The most important bit being:

PS: "coup d'accélérateur le 18 janvier" means roughly "speeding gear on 18 January".If you need some more help to translate, just let me know.

The preparation does not started yet, the area is like that since the demolition of an old residencial complex in 2005.

Launched by Unibail, the construction of the 194m skyscraper will start late January in La Défense.

UNIBAIL RODAMCO (UNBP.PA: Quote) Europe's biggest listed property group will start
construction of the Majunga tower in Paris' La Defense business
district in late January, newspaper Le Figaro reported, without
citing sources. [UNBP.PA]

http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFLDE6AS26120101130

^^ Last paragraph says: ' Other project in La Défense that might speed up: the Twin Towers by russian group Hermitage. A pharaonic 2 billion € project for which financing is taking shape. 'We signed letters of intent with a bank pool for us to be able to finance 700 millions €, Emin Iskenderov (Hermitage CEO) asserts. By the end of the year, the definitive contract will be concluded.'

Jex7844

Hi danielip,

It literally means ' the defence' and refers to the below statue which was erected to the glory of soldiers having defended Paris during the 1870 franco-german war.

La Défense was born roughly 50 years ago. It was created from A to Z and replaced slums & farms(it's hard to beleive but yes, La Défense used to be a slum... :uh:)

Vous parlez bien français messieurs, félicitations ;).

Here's a nice video found on Eiffage's website:

http://www.eiffageconstruction.com/FR/news/tour-majunga-la-defense.html

The excavation work, started in January & due to last 7 months, is very complex owing to the presence of quarry gaps in the subsoil which need to be filled in, & geotechnical irregularities to be dealt with. The building work will start in september 2011 and the tower will be delivered in December 2013.

During the night, they took off many construction machines (cranes, puncher, mixers...) with a state autorisation (from 9pm to 6am in a very crowded area).
They are moving on to the next step...

The excavations look like hard work, compared to London. Is that bedrock they're digging into? (sorry, construction isn't my speciality)

Jex7844
July 22nd, 2011, 12:36 AM
Indeed Talisker, they've been having a rough time owing to the presence of massive hard rocks (visible in some of the above pics), that's a bit of a nightmare to shatter them...but otherwise, works are coming along nicely, lots of action everyday, the excavation work should be done within a couple of weeks (imo), a big crane is being assembled & will be completed by saturday. I'll try to update this thread as often as I can. BFN

I'm curious what Defense's second highest is gonna add to the area. Personally I think the design is interesting, fitting well in La Defense and 194 m is very welcome here.

I just recently visited La Defence for the first time , and I was wondering is it normal for French office workers to stick cartoon characters or game characters in the windows of their offices , really messes with some of the buildings flow.

Trademarc
September 4th, 2011, 08:36 PM
Well, I did see it at at other spots in Paris too, like on the Tour Montparnasse. I cannot tell if I find it's funny or disturbing. A littlebit of both, I guess.

It reminds me of a documentary I saw about street art (Banksy). There's a part about a French street artist (Invader) who was making these kind of images. Maybe he's been an inspiration to the French office workers???

That's a pity mate...but next time, just know that the site is easily accessible, it's located behind the ARIANE Tower (its name is written on the facade, you can't miss it).

I personally love Majunga, its design is very modern & nice looking, it's gonna add something special to the skyline for sure! :)

Regarding those stickers on the offices' windows, it was actually part of a contest called 'POST IT WAR'.

Next time I will definately pay a visit to this one. Hopefully by that time I won't be needing your directions, cause I expect it to be clearly visible in the skyline by then :D

wow.... absolutely truly amazing .... I JUST LOVE THIS ONE ...

in fact, if I just envision the moment it is constructed and standing tall along with one of my most favorite towers in Paris, next to it, I can only think of one symphony to be played:

Karmina Burana by Carl Orff and just enjoy the view!!!

Jex7844

Yeap CharlotteJ :).

In addition to being an original tower with a decent height/lovely modern design & a pretty interesting cladding (at last), it's going to bring some balance to the skyline of La Défense (view from the Champs Elysées for instance). Indeed, there are so many projects under construction or planned on the right hand side (Courbevoie) that a major project was needed on the left hand side (in Puteaux). ;) I now wish that the outstanding Osmose tower will see the light in Puteaux in the next few years, no matter how long it can take, this tower is too gorgeous not to get built...

Yes true. I have been staying at a hotel in Puteaux area and if you then enter La Defence it can really impress one when a few 50+ floor skyscrapers can welcome one onto the area. Like I said, two or three 250meters or one 300meters tall building in the area will definitly add up to its charm.

And viewed from Champs Elysée it sure does make the whole picture more than just perfect.
