zachus22 June 10th, 2007, 05:36 PM Toronto's a hotspot for North American made movies. It's a big, safe city with a bunch of upscale restaurants and shopping districts, a tremendous nightlife, and a top-level vibrancy. Oh, and not to mention it's cheaper to film movies there.
That said, Vancouver is emerging as a North American movie-making capital as well. Tremendous geography, and possessing almost, if not all, the amentities that Toronto prides itself on.
Marco_ June 10th, 2007, 05:49 PM Maybe Hilversum, in Netherlands
Most of the media offices are located there and big mansions in 't Gooi area
But it's an average shopping-city
TohrAlkimista June 10th, 2007, 07:40 PM Cinecittà, Rome.
The studios of Fellini.
Wonderful.
infernal June 10th, 2007, 07:42 PM I beleive Brazil's hollywood is Buzios RJ or Jurere international SC
They both have a great deal of mansions and famous people, great views to the ocean and ect.
Jurere is considered to have the most beautiful homes in Brazil
But none of the studios are there. If it counts only with studios then it Rio
Other than that it's Jurere or Buzios
Jurere internacional

Ummm... you ever been to Hollywood? It doesn't have those things (even the view is quite obscured by smog). The only thing that makes Hollywood famous is the fact that it is the historical home of the movie industry in the US. Most studios aren't even there anymore: Universal, Disney, and Warner Bros are all in Burbank, MGM is in Santa Monica, etc.
If you're talking where the famous stars and luxury homes are, you're thinking of Beverly Hills (maybe Malibu as well). It has its famous shopping district, huge houses (fanning out into Belair), and many famous people walking around. Hollywood doesn't have fancy houses and rich people. For a long time it was actually somewhat of a high crime area, but recently its been making a turnaround.
So what are we really looking for? The city that is synonymous with where the rich famous people live? or the historical home of the film industry in your country?
david chanrion June 10th, 2007, 10:04 PM IN france cannes would probably be the equivalent :
First because of its Film festival, it has become a hot spot fot celebreties ans a legendary place of cinema, second because since the end of the 19th century it's the courtyard of rich and famous with plenty of nice villas, luxury hotels etc.. and astonishingly, the climate, the moutains the coastline ans the vegetation ca in a way remind of Hollywood and its surroundings.

I've only heard of Vancouver being called "The Hollywood of the North," but I can believe that Toronto is equally influential. Most movies set in NYC are rarely filmed at ground in NYC, usually being filmed in either of these two cities or a Hollywood studio.

You are way off. You are thinking mainly of Hollywood Blvd, but you have to consider the rest of Hollywood, mainly th Hollywood Hills with many movie stars and Celebs with multi million dollar houses, amazing views of LA, and Hollywood, from the Blvd, to Sunset and the streets in between have some of the best nightspots and restaurants in the country. There is still plenty of industry in Hollywood and they are actually returning slowly, with the Changing face of Hollywood thanks to the Subway and billions of dollars in investment. And the smog comment is such a stereotype. get over it.

Yeah for sure. A lot of the time movies set in the NYCs, Chicagos of the world are actually shot in Toronto and Vancouver, then disguised to look like the cities they're emulating.

:D Oh dear, poor Gucci, Prada or wherever he was:S Anyway, Yorkville is by far the epicentre of all things chic and hilariously overpriced in Canada. It has the finest restaurants, the finest designer boutiques - the European flagship designer stores on Bloor (Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Hermes, Escada..) It has absolutely no competition in Canada, it's just THE place to be (not to mention the heart of the Toronto Film Festival!) The Park Hyatt, the Yorkville Inter Continental, the Four Seasons, the Hazelton and soon to be the Four Seasons' flagship hotel, their finest property in the entire world.
Not to mention some of the most ridiculously expensive sounding streets - Bellair, Yorkville, Bloor, Scollard, Hazelton!!!
Plus, SWISS magazine has rated the Bloor Yorkville area as one of the top 10 shopping destinations in the entire world!

Filip June 14th, 2007, 05:09 AM In Canada, it's Vancouver. Toronto is only 2nd.
Umm no, show me one part of Vancouver with the same allure as Yorkville and I might agree. Being the country's hollywood isn't just about movie production - it's about the movie culture (which blows Vancouver sky high out of the water, the Toronto International Film Festival is the world's second most prestigious film festival), other than that, for simply indie productions, and anything else Toronto tops Canada. Yorkville is Canada's Beverly Hills, the Fifth Avenue of this country - there is no other Holllywood alternative out there.
But if your arbitrary ranking only includes such shallow things as production, in 3 years Toronto will have many more megastudios, with the completion of the Pinewood (you know PINEWOOD, the most famous studios in England, producing Bond films and such) open their complex near downtown, and Filmport opens their's by the waterfront, Toronto will wipe the floor in movie production.
I half agree -- Canada offers no runner-up, just its Emerald City . . .
Wrong.
Taller, Better June 14th, 2007, 08:11 AM For both domestic and international films combined, Toronto has the most production in Canada. Toronto also has by far the biggest pool of actors, other film people, and techies. To me, domestic filming is far more important than pretending a Canadian city is an American one.
As for elkram's slurred ramblings... (as usual) who knows what he meant? :)
by the way, if people post loads of pictures, shouldn't they have something to do with the film industry? Many of the ones posted here are just postcards.
elkram June 14th, 2007, 11:24 PM show me one part of Vancouver with the same allure as Yorkville
Cheesh, Yorkville has no allure -- lol! Far more stylin' footwear worn by folks in Vancouver than the predominant duds trollin' 'roun' Toronto. Besides, it'd be the other way around (''show me one part of Toronto with the same allure as Yaletown''). By the way, hasn't anybody let you know that Yorkville's been thoroughly destroyed?!?
Wrong.
Heh heh, wanna strip somebody of her/his opinion, huh?
LOL! Toronto has yet to learn how to brand itself, let alone to try to leech off of some dazzlingly-established place. Vancouver can at least boast some chic spots while Toronto simply yields nought to savour afterwards. Take your dull stats and shove 'em, coz to me this query's all about flavour, being a foreign aspect to forummers yabbering here all the way from Toronto.
Filip June 15th, 2007, 01:46 AM You're kidding, right? The one thing I noticed in Vancouver is almost everyone wore Lululemon, hardly what I'd call fashionable. Yaletown is cute, but it's not what's being compared here - Yorkville is a chic, fashionista, unbearably expensive district, Yaletown is better suited to being compared with Queen West. Yorkville hasn't been destroyed, the hippies have moved out and gone a few blocks southwest - to Kensington, which suits them much better. You can't escape gentrification, especially in an area on two subway lines. Yorkville was meant to become what it was, so it shouldn't be a surprise. The condos being built there do not destroy any historic architecture (that has been done over 40 years ago), in fact, they add to the area, by replacing strip lots and parkings, they switch them over to tastefully done $$$ apartments, condos and ultra luxury retail space.
I grew up in Europe, I've had people visit from there (and from Vancouver) they all loved Yorkville because it had an intimate European flavour. The Vancouverites wanted to move there, because it offered something Vancouver didn't.
algonquin June 15th, 2007, 05:19 AM By the way, hasn't anybody let you know that Yorkville's been thoroughly destroyed?!?
? You need to renew your prescriptions.
Nothing new from Elkram... just the same bizzare rants, lies, and hate propaganda. Canada has no runner-up? You have got be be f@#king kidding me. Thats like saying that Montreal isn't famous for comedy. You're denial routine is pathetic.
Both Vancouver and Toronto are known for film production, but Toronto has far more international status because of it's film festival (it's up there with Cannes and Sundance). There's no denying this, it's a simple fact known to anyone who knows film. And during TIFF celebrity-spotting is a pastime in Yorkville.

I realize you struggle with the English language, but what on Earth are you rabbitting on about? Are these more pearls of wisdom dispensed to you by your dear old Mum? Something she told you whilst lunching at a shopping mall in your charming home suburb of Laval?
elkram June 15th, 2007, 09:02 PM You're kidding, right?
The only part of me that's kidding is my full-out teasing -- frankly, I'm not kidding.
I haven't come across a post here asking us what each of us thinks of Hollywood (lol!) itself . . . right?
Toronto has far more international status because of it's film festival
Wholly thanks to Montreal's fest having become too (ahem!) lippy for the 'establishment' to swallow . . .
Taller, Better June 15th, 2007, 10:07 PM ^^ The reason you are "not kidding" is, sadly, that you don't have the slightest clue and as usual your "opinions" about Toronto are based on petty regional jealousies as opposed to actual experience or knowledge. You are predictable........ and dull.

The Toronto Film Festival is widely regarded as one of the two most important in the world, along with Cannes. Are you fairly new to the city? You will be amazed at the festival this fall when it happens.

Taller, Better June 16th, 2007, 10:20 PM ^^and by what measure it is considered the second most important festival next to Cannes? number of films screened, presence of stars and celebrities?
at least in my perception though, I thought it's always Cannes, Venice and Berlin, Toronto is up there but it's less prestigeous than the others.
Depends on what yardstick you use to judge "importance", but number of films has nothing to do with it. As for the stars, they do tend to go to the festivals that the filmakers want to publicize their films at. Venice has certainly slid a lot in recent history. Cannes will probably always be the most prestigious to be seen at, but if you are interested in selling your film (ie industry people) then Toronto is the place to be for N American and European filmakers. Berlin is also a very highly regarded film festival, as is Sundance, etc.. But there is no official "ranking" of film festivals as they all cater to different needs. Some are competitive (like Cannes and Berlin) and some are more industry and public oriented, like Toronto.
LMCA1990 June 17th, 2007, 01:49 AM Colombia's Hollywood is, without a doubt, Bogota. Many of Colombia's famous soap operas and films are shot there (like the original Ugly Betty and dramas like Maria Full Of Grace and horrors like At The End Of The Spectra):

Tbite June 17th, 2007, 10:10 AM The Hollywood Capital of Nigeria will be The Tinapa Resort in Calabar, but it is currently Lagos.
Hanshin-Tigress June 18th, 2007, 09:09 AM This is a result totally different from a market in Japan.
In Japan, a travel of Chihiro pulled Titanic.
As for the higher movie, 60% were Japanese movies last year.
U.S.A. seems to have run out of a subject. The movie that Titanic, Spider-Man, Superman, Star wars showed it before 40 from 30 years.
I remake Japanese "shall we dance" and filmize Japanese comics, and attemptability falls. death notebook, NANA, Yellow handkerchief, sea colander of happiness, Umizaru, Gundam, South Pole story, Hachi-ko story, Juon. All these are Japanese movies.
As for the hollywood movie, only box office is good. But there are only a low movie of an intellectual level and a movie liking war.
Therefore, as for the box-office proceeds, a hollywood movie is better.
But quality of a movie is more superior in Asia and Europe.
By scholastic ability investigation of children, U.S.A. is worst with the 25th place in a developed nation.
