Where is th eline of separation because i haven't seen it the last time when visiting westfield stratford?

Well athletes are housed in the village, officials are brought in from their hotels along the route network, through the secure transport malls at each end of the Park and then around the secure Loop Road inside the Park.

Spectators enter from Westfield in the East, Greenway Gate in the South, Eton Manor Walk in the North and Victoria Gate in the West according to that new map I posted last week.

Just a reminder as to how the RUN artwork will look when it's finished:

http://hackneycitizen.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/RUN-sculpture-day-Monica-Bonvicini-007.jpg

During daylight, the letters will act as a mirror for visitors and their surroundings, and at night the letters will become more transparent and glow with internal LED lighting.

The ugliest thing for me on the Aquatic Centre (a building I otherwise like) is the grey-yellow panelling on the wings. But as you can see on this pic, it is transparent in the renderings. Anyone know if they plan to peel off this panelling?

London Olympic press and media centre legacy shortlist revealed

An "innovation city", a UK "fashion hub" and a sports-based offering in partnership with Loughborough University have been shortlisted to move into the cavernous media and press centres on the Olympic Park after the Games.

The vast buildings have long been considered among the biggest legacy challenges for the Olympic Park Legacy Company but the chief executive, Andrew Altman, said it had generated "huge amounts of commercial interest".

Prime minister David Cameron has said he wants the tenants to be part of his vision of a "tech city" stretching from Shoreditch and Old Street to the Stratford Park.

An earlier plan for the BBC to move the studios where it films EastEnders to the Park collapsed amid concerns about its suitability from producers. A plan to turn the media centre into a giant indoor snowdome has not made the shortlist.

The broadcast centre and press centre will house 30,000 journalists during the Games. Afterwards the broadcast centre will offer 95,000 square feet of office space over five floors and 575,000 square feet of commercial space over two floors.

The five-storey press centre will provide around 317,000 square feet of office space with the potential for retail uses on the ground floor. The OPLC will now enter into negotiations with three shortlisted proposals, whittled down from a long list of 10 that was compiled from 45 original expressions of interest.

Under the proposal for a "fashion hub", the broadcast centre would offer offices, manufacturing and creative uses while the press centre would become a fashion college, e-tailing centre and a media centre.

London in final Olympic readiness phase

The pay isn't great, the job is temporary and you could be a target for terrorists. But when Mabel Cross heard that she might be able to work at the 2012 Summer Olympics, she rushed to get to a London recruitment center early.

Immaculate in a navy suit and pink shirt, Cross painstakingly filled out forms Thursday in hopes she could be part of a vast new Olympic workforce. The recruitment effort at a school just outside the Olympic stadium in East London is the most visible signal yet that organizers are ready to stop building arenas and start delivering sports events.

"I wish I could be successful," the 52-year-old said in a voice just above a whisper. "I would be so interested to work for the Olympics."

Some 10,000 security guards are needed and organizers have already received three times that number in applications from around the country. The guards will work alongside British police and the military to deliver a robust — and expensive — security operation involving about 23,700 people.

Planners are also moving to finalize security, ticketing and transport plans despite a series of setbacks that have pushed costs higher.

"We're switching from planning stuff to really doing it," said organizing committee chief executive Paul Deighton.

While Britain's total cost for the event remains at 9.3 billion pounds ($14.6 billion), auditors say there's little wiggle room for the unexpected. The budget for the games is "finely balanced," with less than 0.4 percent of the total left to cover unforeseen expenses, the National Audit Office has said.

If anything unexpected and expensive happens, Olympic officials will have to ask British taxpayers, already struggling in tough economic times, for more money. Paying more for the games would not enhance their popularity among a public already angered by a complex, computerized ticketing system that was riddled with glitches and left many people unable to attend.

Part of the reason for the budget worries is that security costs have continued to rise. British officials last month doubled the funding for security operations at venues, raising overall security costs to more than 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion).

London beefs up river security before 2012 games

London Olympic organizing committee chief Sebastian Coe assured The Associated Press in an interview that the games were on track and will stay in the black.

"Occasionally some things are slightly more than you expect," he said, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "On a lot of occasions, they're slightly less than you expect, but overall those changes have taken place within that 9.3 billion-pound envelope."

Coe vowed that glitches in the ticketing process were being ironed out before the next batch go on sale in April. About 1.9 million people made 24 million ticket applications for the 6 million tickets available.

Most of the construction work is finished, with centerpiece arenas like Olympic Stadium and the saddle-shaped swimming venue visible for miles. London Mayor Boris Johnson has even taken in the view of Olympic Park from the platform on the almost-finished Orbit, a ruby red sculpture that towers over the stadium.

On weekends, the site can even get quiet — with no beeping construction vehicles backing up.

Work crews are now focusing on details. Ecologists have reintroduced newts to the park. Bats have taken up residence. Even in a bleak London winter, grass has taken root.

Yet in London's famous Underground subway system, things remain more unsettled. Transport planners say the number of trains will increase on the Jubilee Line, one of two key subways that will serve both central London and Olympic Park. Subway travelers will notice changes.

Nigel Holness, the network service director for London Underground, took The Associated Press on a behind-the-scenes tour recently. Standing beside the driver's seat of a subway train, he spoke as the train slipped through the dark tunnels to stations near some of the city's biggest landmarks — Westminster, Waterloo, London Bridge.

London 2012: Isles of Wonder is Olympic ceremony theme

London 2012's opening ceremony is to be called Isles of Wonder, organisers have revealed six months ahead of the Games.

The ceremony's artistic director, Danny Boyle, revealed the name at a press briefing alongside creative director Stephen Daldry.

Boyle said it would be about a land that has been poisoned by industrial legacy and the recovery of that land.

It is anticipated the opening ceremony on 27 July will be watched by one billion TV viewers.

Bolye, who is best known for directing Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, said they had commissioned the biggest ringing bell in Europe to hang at one end of stadium and ring at opening of Games.

It is to be inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare's The Tempest: "Be not afeard, the isle is full of noises".

Boyle said he wanted people to hear it "for hundreds of years".

'Fabulous opportunity'
Talking about all four Olympic ceremonies Daldry said they were the "greatest shows on earth and the task was enormous."

He said they represent one journey to the end looking at who we are, who we were and who we would wish to be.

More detailed information will be released about the artists in April and the content of opening ceremony in June, he added.

All four ceremonies are expected to be watched by four billion people and advertising experts estimate this is worth up to £5bn in airtime exposure.

At the opening ceremony Boyle will again be collaborating with electronic musical duo Underworld whose 'Born Slippy' featured in Trainspotting.

The pair have been named musical directors of the three-hour ceremony.

Some 20,000 performers are being sought for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

London 2012 ceremonies

Cast of 15,000 volunteers
23,000 costumes
12 hours of music
60 musicians
15,000 sq m of staging
13,000 propos
one million watt PA system with 500 speakers
They will be drawn from members of the public and more than 10,000 have already been auditioned.

Speaking earlier on Friday about the challenges that lay ahead in the next six months, London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe said it was a fabulous opportunity but a "heavy weight of responsibility".

Locog chief executive Paul Deighton said it would be all about attention to detail as well as building the excitement and helping people to be a part of what will be "the greatest thing this city has seen in their lifetimes".

A ceremony was also being held marking the handover of the Athletes' Village, on the Olympic Park in Stratford, from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to Locog.

The 2,818 flats will now be fitted out to cater for 16,000 athletes and officials from 200 countries.

OPENING CEREMONY FACTS
• 15,000 square metres of staging – equivalent to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
• A flying system that can lift 25 tonnes – that is the same as five elephants.
• There will be 12,956 props, which is more than 100 times more than used in a West End musical.
• A million-watt PA system using more than 500 speakers and 50 tonnes of associated sound gear – which is double the amount of speakers than on the main stage at Glastonbury.
• The design team have made enough scale model pieces to cover a 100-metre running track. Every performer has been represented by a plastic figurine.
• So far, 64 different supplier companies have been contracted to provide services and products.
ALL FOUR CEREMONIES
• 25 containers full of scenery and props and 75 containers of costumes full of 23,000 costumes. Some cast members will wear more than one costume each.
• 15,000 volunteer cast across all four ceremonies. The people who have auditioned have been aged from 18 to 90 years old. They have come from across the UK and include people who watched the 1948 Games live, according to London 2012.
• A total of 12 hours of music working with an internationally renowned orchestra of around 60 musicians is part of the programme. Organisers will spend three months of recording time in the studio and spend 36 hours in dedicated drum tuition.
• The combined TV audiences for the four ceremonies is predicted to be more than four billion people. Sir Martin Sorrell has predicted that the equivalent airtime value of the four ceremonies will be worth between approximately £2 billion and £5 billion.

BAM Nuttall has won two contracts worth a combined total of £76m to transform the Olympic Park once the Games are over (http://www.londonlovesbusiness.com/news/155-year-old-london-company-wins-76m-olympic-park-contracts-to-engineer-develop/1620.article)

The building and engineering company won a £49m contract to work on the North Park following the Games, while it also secured a £27m deal to work on the South Park, the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) announced.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7023/6781530701_0aa54ef77c.jpg

Money for the work to develop the 2012 venue in Stratford, east London, into the newly named Queen Elizabeth Park is coming from the £292m already built into the budget for the Games. The 18-month project, dubbed as ‘clear, connect and complete’ by the OPLC, will create approximately 500 temporary jobs. The work will clear the venue of structures put in place for the Games only, such as temporary venues, roads and walkways.New roads, cycle and pedestrian paths will be laid across the site and into surrounding areas as part of the connect phase of the work. The complete phase will involve permanent bridges, parklands and venues that will be left in place for future legacy use.Andrew Altman, the chief executive of the OPLC, said: “BAM Nuttall worked on the original Olympic Park and their hands on knowledge will be invaluable in helping us to achieve our target of reopening the Park in phases from July 2013.

Affordable housing concerns for London despite Olympics development boost (http://www.24dash.com/news/housing/2012-01-30-Affordable-housing-concerns-for-London-despite-Olympics-development-boost-report)

The Olympic Games are acting as a catalyst for new housebuilding activity across Greater London but there is concern about the number of affordable homes being built, according to a new report from Drivers Jonas Deloitte. The consultancy's latest London Residential Crane Survey (Winter 2011) says that despite continued economic uncertainty, housing development activity across Greater London has continued to increase, particularly in East London.

The report highlights that there has been a 40 percent increase in construction activity since this time last year. However, there is evidence that momentum has already begun to slow. Economic uncertainty and regulatory changes mean that there has been a fall in the number of new schemes starting since the last survey. The report concludes that the recorded level of construction activity is unlikely to be sustained during 2012.

hell with football & London. This 2012 games are going to be the "most ordinary" of all the summer olympics after what Sydney, Athens & particularly Beijing steller show.

cant wait for 2016 Rio De Janero when summer olympics will return to its former glory since 2008 beijing.

Silly little Indian boy perks up again with his baseless opinions on the UK again. I bit my tongue in the Orbit thread with your stupid posts but it's getting boring now coming into this thread reading the same rubbish. I get that you don't like anything in this country, London has nothing on NYC bla bla bla, anything it builds, its sporting culture or its people. If that's the case, don't comment.

Nice attention to detail. I hope the Park does become a great place for wildlife after the Games are over. Certainly there's enough waterways and grassland for that to happen.

BMW have unveiled the design of their floating showroom in the London Olympics Park.

The elevated site will sit between the Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Park showcasing the automobile giant’s work.

It will use water from the river to create an eye-catching ‘water curtain’ feature, which cools the structure in an innovative and sustainable way.

Christopher Lee, Serie co-founder and principal architect, added: “The design takes the idea of the pavilion in the park – the Victorian bandstand – but instead of one pavilion we envision nine pavilions clustered together to form a family.”

Tim Abbott, managing director of BMW Group UK, added: “As a major investor, manufacturer and employer in the UK, BMW Group is deeply proud to be an official partner for Britain’s first Olympic & Paralympic Games since 1948.

“This commitment to the UK is also reflected in our choice of a home-grown architecture practice to design our pavilion and we’re delighted that Serie’s final design reflects our commitment to sustainable thinking in such an innovative and eye-catching manner.

“We believe it provides a truly worthy addition to the Olympic Park”.

Around 8,000 people a day are expected to visit during this summer’s Games.

As the official car supplier to London 2012, BMW will also provide a fleet of around 4,000 vehicles to help transport athletes and officials during the Games.

Olympics-UK going great guns on tourism push

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/09/uk-olympics-tourism-idUSLNE81803O20120209

Reuters) - Britain launched on Thursday its biggest ever campaign to attract visitors to its shores, exploiting a unique year in which London will host the Olympics and Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years on the throne.

"(GREAT Britain) is the largest ad (campaign) in our history," said Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for culture, Olympics, media and sport of the 125 million pound trade and tourism initiative.

"We're taking the fight for the tourist pound right to our competitors' doorsteps... there will be no escape from the message that Britain is great."

The international trade and tourism drive is split into a 25 million "image campaign" and a 100 million pounds "tactical campaign" invested over a four-year period across 20 source markets, to be co-funded by companies including British Airways, easyJet, P&O Ferries and Radisson Hotels .

Britain, already the sixth most visited country in the world, plans to splash images promoting its heritage around airports, metro stations and road junctions in 14 cities around the globe, with the aim of attracting over 4.6 million extra visitors over the next four years, and securing an additional 2.3 billion pounds in visitor spend.

The cities include Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, New Delhi and Sydney.

"If you are looking for one traditional British quality that you won't see this year, that is modesty," Hunt said.

The campaign is a cross-department effort between tourism agency VisitBritain, the British Council (educational marketing) and UK Trade and Investment (business investment marketing).

USING THE GAMES

Critics have questioned whether the UK requires such a costly awareness-raising campaign in a year when the UK will already be receiving unsurpassed attention from the eyes of the world. But the government message is clear: There is nothing automatic about a tourism boost, Games or no Games.

"It is an incredible privilege to host the Olympics, and we want to do everything we can to make sure that the legacy from hosting the Games is jobs... for British businesses as a lasting legacy," Hunt told journalists today.

Sandie Dawe, chief executive of VisitBritain added that 2012 is a critical year for the long-term success of British tourism.

The cross-department group aim to convert interest in the UK into the decision to actually commit to visiting.

Shanghai and Beijing commuters will have already noticed the posters that line the cities' metro stations. Two hundred Mumbai taxis will be dressed in the campaign's creative, as will New York subway trains.

In a move which Hunt admits is "cheeky", a billboard outside the Louvre in Paris bellows out the message that "Culture is GREAT Britain", and that museums are actually free in London. GREAT will also link up with international events such as next week's New York Fashion Week.

Overall, the campaign is expected to reach 90 million people.

The UK travel industry figures worry that fewer traditional, foreign tours will come to London this summer.

The European Tour Operators Association ETOA.L announced after a November 2011 survey a dramatic reduction in bookings during the summer 2012 period.

The group said visitors will be put off by the London crowds and the possibility of higher hotel prices. European travel is also likely to be significantly affected by the ongoing Eurozone crisis.

Hunt has in recent months regularly dismissed fears that tourists will stay away from Britain during the Olympics, listing the many other cultural reasons for people to visit.

Today, the minister painted a picture of 2012 as a series of massive promotional "punches", from the cross-country Olympic torch relay on May 18, through the Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June, the Olympics' opening ceremony on July 27 and the London Festival 2012, a 12-week programme of concerts, exhibitions, films and live events which marks the culmination of the four-year Cultural Olympiad.

Hunt said an extra 600,000 international visitors were expected because of the Games.

The government is seeking to bolster UK domestic tourism in 2012 with a four million pound advertising campaign, beginning March 8, which extols the virtues of staying home and watching the Olympic.

Design team named for Olympic International Quarter

http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/pictures/704x528fitpad[150]/6/4/9/1278649_Q-Stratford-City_mres.jpg

BDP, Gensler, Pringle Brandon Drew, TP Bennett and Woods Bagot have been chosen to design the new £1.3 billion commercial district on the edge of the Olympic Park in Stratford City.

Backed by a joint venture between Lend Lease and London & Continental Railways, the International Quarter (TIQ) project will be one of the UK’s largest mixed-use developments and will include 370,000m² of office space, a new hotel and 350 homes.

The developers launched the search for architects on the project, hailed as a ‘new commercial district for London’, last year (AJ 21.07.2011).

Mark Dickinson, managing director development of EMEA, Lend Lease: ‘There is no other site in London like TIQ where an occupier can create a completely bespoke office building, tailored exactly to their business needs. The quarter will create work environments that motivate and empower employees. Expect something innovative and refreshing.’

Christopher Bennie, principal director at TP Bennett, said: ‘We have the opportunity to create a new generation of sustainable office buildings, designed to be thermally and spatially efficient, yet sufficiently flexible to attract a range of occupiers and accommodate their changing needs over time. By looking to the future and challenging orthodoxies, TIQ can become an exemplar with a strong sense of place, attractive in which to live and work”.

Earle Arney, global director of workplace at Woods Bagot, said: ‘The International Quarter will be a game-changer; not just for London but for Europe. TIQ gives London the opportunity to step-ahead of many world cities by providing an innovative workplace that is designed from the inside out.’

Outline planning consent has already been secured for the scheme around the Westfeld shopping centre and construction is expected to start after the Games, in early 2013, when the site will be handed over by Olympic Delivery Authority.

The first offices are expected to complete in 2015.

As an "artwork" it's pretty tacky, as mooring posts for canal boats - which is what they also are - they're quite nice and fit in with the "Southbank" / festival feel they're going for in the South of the Park. I'd quite like to see them from the bridges or from the Park itself. Nobody is going to see them that close up in reality.

Do better than this how? These are mooring posts for canal boats. The photos above have been taken super close-up, but in reality - to people in the Park - they'll be little splashes of colour along the canal, nothing more. And for people using the canal, they're somewhere to tie up their boats. Talk about an overreaction.

As for whose idea it was, there is an article linked underneath, but I don't expect you've bothered reading that have you?

A lot of what London is doing for these Olympics reminds me of what LA did in 1984. Colorful banners and art pieces everywhere. The art that went up around LA was called 'festive federalism.'

Poor taste gold medal goes to LA.

You think?

The design for L.A. booths and associated materials won many awards for the design agency that developed it. It reflected, as is obvious, 80s post modernism and employed the brilliant contrasts of hot pastels that were popular in the Memphis Style, developed by the Memphis Group. With LA's tight budget the design agency created striking booths and pillared walkways that could be created cheaply out of cardboard tubes, flats, canvas, and piping. It was an inspired solution given that officially not a penny of government money was to be used for the project. Unlike British taxpayers who will be paying for theirs for decades.

Let's hope London can pull off something half as impressive in a design sense. The look and style in LA flowed seamlessly from posters to ticketing to boothing to art pieces. NO Olympics since LA has pulled that design singularity: it's all been 'bitsy'. In LA, the *cohesive visual look* of the Olympics across venues through this relatively inexpensive branding work was deeply impressive.

I've been trying to avert my eyes from the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee logos ever since I saw them, so I have low expectations for the UK but am keeping an open mind.

I'd not seen those pictures from LA before. Obviously the colour palette and logo are quite different but these really do remind me of glimpses I've seen of London's look book:

The logo launch event was one of 2012's biggest mistakes in my opinion. They launched it in a big dark room, told us all the amazing applications it could have and then left it for ages without proving to us what it could do. They should have launched some kind of interactive website to go with it, beamed it around London in lights, or something, anything which allowed people to engage with it from the outset. As it was it was left cold which was a mistake, especially for a logo as challanging as this one.

Rio's logo launch party was done really well by contrast and got people engaged with their logo from the off.

Errm you do know half those pics are of Los Angeles 84 and those pics of London are just artists impression from the brochure to show what items can be put up. The local councils will then choose what street decorations they wish to use. You can't judge it until it's reality. I've actually seen teasers of what my local authority will be putting up, and it actually looks pretty nice. :)

The photos speak for themselves. Absolutely stunning from even the wings. what's really weird (and quite the architectural moment) is seeing essentially the outside of a building inside. Even being at the same level as the roof is a fantastic experience. Everything just feels so intimate and completely deceiving how structural massive it is. I love how obvious it is what is permanent and temporary, and the commentary made mention of this fact when it talked about the design of the building.

The diving was excellent as well, but all eyes were on the stunning venue. I don't think I'll ever tire of visiting.

Notice the lighting pods on the upper right corner... I wonder if they are mechanically rigged so that they can be aimed by a controller ( if not, then manually).

These type of lightings are to conserve energy and avoid "light polution".

OLYMPIC MUSEUM ANNOUNCED AS LONDON 2012 LEGACY

February 27, 2012 12:58 pm
The British Olympic Association (BOA) announced plans today for an Olympic Museum to be built on the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP) as a permanent legacy of the London 2012 Games.
The proposals are for the Olympic Museum to open in 2014 and be situated adjacent to the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower. It is expected to become a leading visitor attraction on the QEOP.
The British Olympic Museum will provide members of the public with a venue to re-live the excitement, passion and drama of the London 2012 Games. It will create an interactive experience using technology and entertainment to communicate the Olympic values to inspire future generations and educate them with stories and memorabilia from the Games.
The Museum is also designed to recognise and celebrate London’s unique place in the Olympic Movement as it becomes the first city in the world to host the Olympic Games three times. Regretfully, there is minimal physical representation of the 1908 and 1948 Olympic Games left in London. The museum will ensure the story of London’s special Olympic history will be showcased to the world and our assets from the 1908, 1948 and 2012 Games are shared with visitors for many years to come.

While the design and content of the Museum is still under discussion, it is anticipated the experience might include the following elements:
2012 Olympic Memories - The celebration of a unique, once in a generation event in the UK
Faster, Higher, Stronger - The Sports (summer and winter)
London and the Olympics - 1908, 1948 History and Heritage
Media and the Games - A glimpse behind the scenes
Olympic Stadium and the QEOP - Building the venues
Gallery of Champions - Inspiration for future generations

The BOA is working to raise funds from Olympic Partners and individual donors and the BOA and Olympic Park Legacy Company will work together to reach a final licensing agreement in the forthcoming weeks.
BOA Chairman Colin Moynihan said:
“As the only city to have earned the honour of hosting the Olympic Games three times, London occupies a truly unique place in Olympic history. It is a feat we should be immensely proud of and I believe the British Olympic Museum is the perfect way to ensure the spirit, excitement and unforgettable memories of the London 2012 Games live on to inspire future generations to follow their own dreams.
“We look forward to working in partnership with the Olympic Park Legacy Company and we are grateful for the support received from the International Olympic Committee. We are now looking to the Olympic Partners and individuals to help make this legacy project a great success. Given the lack of physical legacy remaining from the 1908 and 1948 Games, we are delighted that the Museum will be created to tell the story of the 2012 Games long after the curtain comes down. Crucially, it will create a permanent touch-point with the public on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and will be a great complement to the many excellent sporting venues.
“The museum will also provide an important opportunity to honour and celebrate the most outstanding British Olympic athletes and create a platform for their stories to inspire generation upon generation of future sport participants with their achievements.”
Baroness Ford, Chair of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, said:
"The Olympic Museum will be a wonderful attraction on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, bringing historical, educational and cultural interest for families to enjoy and leaving a lasting association with the London 2012 Games. Legacy plans are more advanced than any previous Olympic host city and an Olympic Museum will be yet another great asset for people to enjoy on the Park.”
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said:
"This is yet another fantastic example of how the 2012 Games are inspiring the building of new permanent attractions in this great city. Along with the spectacular ArcelorMittal Orbit , the Museum will help ensure the Olympic Park attracts visitors to the park for generations to come. More importantly it would become another major asset supporting and driving new job creation in east London."
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said:
“It was with great pleasure that I received the BOA’s intention to open a British Olympic Museum within the Olympic Park after London 2012. I am a firm believer that the Olympic Games are not only about gold medals, world records and unforgettable sporting competition. At their core they are about people. They can bring out the best of humanity and all that we can achieve when we strive to be the best at something. The new British Olympic Museum is the place where these stories of human triumph and sacrifice will come to life and it will become part of the lasting legacy that London 2012 will leave the UK for generations to come.”
London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe said:
“It is fantastic news that people here in London and visitors from all around the world will be able to re-live the passion, drama and magic moments created at the Games this summer for many years to come. The Museum will play a key role in educating and inspiring future generations through the Olympic values and represents another exciting legacy of the 2012 Games.”

Queen to annouce Olympics open

The Queen has confirmed she will join the Duke of Edinburgh in opening London 2012 at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.

With less than 150 days until the start of the Games, the Queen unveiled the final plaque in a 60km walking and cycling Jubilee Greenway route that surrounds the Olympic Park on Wednesday.

On Wednesday it was also confirmed Her Majesty will open the Paralympics on August 29, again alongside Prince Philip. It will be the second time she has opened the Olympics - she opened the 1976 Games in Montreal - and the first time she has opened a Paralympics.

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said: "This summer we will be hosting the largest Paralympic Games ever and the opening ceremony on August 29 will be a fantastic event.

"The Paralympic Games will undoubtedly be a time of extraordinary pride for our nation, and it is fitting that Her Majesty will declare us under way."

International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven added: "I am delighted that Her Majesty the Queen will be opening the Paralympic Games, further underlining the significance and status of these Games, not just to the Commonwealth but to the whole world."

The 2012 opening ceremony is being orchestrated by artistic director Danny Boyle, while it is yet to be decided who will light the Olympic flame.

Oh, it fits together a lot better! But that's not surprising. Massive gathering areas for all the ticket holders, big spaces for security checks. big spaces for temporary seating etc. all take up a lot of room. That video also has the housing developments that will be created post-Games in it. It'll be a good few years before it all looks like that. The big area of low-rise housing next to the velodrome (where the temporary basketball arena is at the moment) will be the first plot to be developed.

Wouldn't normally quote myself, but in answer to my own question:

http://www.london2012.com/webcams/olympic-park-2012-gardens.php

The photos on page 144 of this thread make these things look a lot bigger than they actually are, when in reality as this new webcam shows, they're really just little splashes of colour.

London Olympics Could Cost Taxpayers $17 billion

How much will the Brits spend on their upcoming Olympics? The tally won’t be available until weeks after the final medal ceremony (for Men’s Handball, of course). But already government agencies are squabbling over the projected public cost of the games, which looks primed to soar above $15 billion.

In one camp sits the Commons Public Accounts Committee, the agency charged with overseeing government expenditures. On Friday it released a scathing report saying it expects the full cost for taxpayers to be $17 billion, about $3.1 billion over budget.

“The public sector funding package is close to being used up and we are concerned about whether the running of the games will be held within budget,” said Margaret Hodge, the committee’s chairman.

In the other is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which says the games’ cost to taxpayers should come in at around $14.5 billion, the approximate budget that was agreed upon in 2009.

Security costs have added to the bottom line. In December the London Olympic Organizing Committee (LOCOG) more than doubled the number of security guards from 10,000 to 23,700, which equated to an added $420 million cost.

But the DCMS is not counting one sizable line item, the$1.23 billion spent on buying the 180 square acre swath of land in east London, which houses the Olympic Park and Europe’s largest urban shopping mall. The area is being built by Australian developer Westfield. The plan is to transform the area into a huge mixed-use development zone, which will include the largest urban park built in Europe in the last 150 years, and then use revenue from home sales rents to pay for the land purchase.

“The cost of buying the land was excluded because the public purse would be reimbursed by selling it off after the games,” said a spokesperson for DCMS.

The $14.5 billion also overlooks about $1.3 billion in “legacy spending,” which included a government plan to get 2 million Britons more active by 2013. The government scrapped the plan in January.

Whether the two line items are included in the final tally is yet to be seen. But it does not change the fact that the projected cost is almost four times higher than the initial $3.7 billion budget that was discussed in 2005. Or the fact that only about $156 million remains of the $14.5 billion in taxpayer cash earmarked for Olympic spending, with the opening ceremonies just five months away. Or that the former 2012 Olympic chief thinks it could go as high as $31 billion.

The armed forces have been keen to show off their capability to counter terrorism in the build up to the Games.
Around 100 marines and 50 officers rehearsed a string of high-speed drills amid fears attackers could use the waterways to launch onslaughts on London landmarks, earlier this year.

About 50 marine police officers in rigid inflatables and fast response boats were joined by up to 100 military personnel and a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter for the exercises.

The Thames runs directly past the O2 Arena, which will be known as the North Greenwich Arena for the purpose of the Games, when it will host events including gymnastics. The river will also be used to transport tourists between venues via water buses and a new cable car.
Typhoon jets and HMS Ocean, the largest ship in the Royal Navy’s fleet, will eventually be deployed to protect the London 2012 Games along with up to 13,500 military personnel.

Definitely :) Most of the venues are complete and have already held events (such as the Aquatics Centre and Velodrome for example).

The Olympic Stadium opens on May 5 with a special event to mark 2,012 hours until the start of the Games (I have tickets to that, quite excited!).

2012 legacy plans 'raise the bar'
(UKPA)
London 2012's legacy plans have "raised the bar" for future Olympic hosts, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge said.
He is in Britain to get updates on Games preparations from Prime Minister David Cameron, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, London 2012 chairman Lord Coe and sports minister Hugh Robertson as IOC inspectors begin their final three-day visit before the Games begin in July.
His Downing Street meeting with Mr Cameron includes an action plan from which both Government and organisers hope to secure long-term benefits from staging the Games in Stratford, east London.
Mr Rogge said: "London has raised the bar on how to deliver a lasting legacy.
"We can already see tangible results in the remarkable regeneration of east London.
"This great historical city has created a legacy blueprint for future Games hosts."
Mr Rogge will also meet 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion Denise Lewis, former Olympic sprinters Darren Campbell and Jason Gardener, plus double Paralympic swimming gold medallist Ellie Simmonds, who are the newly named ambassadors for the Sainsbury's School Games.
The Princess Royal and Mr Cameron will later host a Downing Street reception for youngsters who are involved in the event.
Up to 1,600 schoolchildren are competing in this multi-sport competition, which includes disability contests, with the finals taking place at the Olympic Park in May.
The success of the legacy plans is not guaranteed but the tricky issue has been "built into the DNA of London 2012", according to Mr Cameron as the Government also published its legacy blueprint, entitled Beyond 2012.

Closed shops, empty buildings, derelict streets... security stop you touching any of the sculptures or taking photos of stuff..

The birds nest stadium was actually quite underwhelming 'in the flesh' too... not sure what all of the fuss was over it.

Rogge says London is blueprint for future
From the Chinadaily!

LONDON - London 2012 will be a blueprint for future Olympic Games, IOC president Jacques Rogge said on Wednesday ahead of a three-day inspection of the venues.
"London has raised the bar on how to deliver a lasting legacy," Rogge told a news conference alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron.
"We can already see tangible results in the remarkable regeneration of East London. This great historical city has created a legacy blueprint for future Games hosts."

Rogge met Cameron at Downing Street to discuss preparations for the Games which start on July 27 and met several London 2012 ambassadors including former heptathlete Denise Lewis.
The inspection visit by the IOC, the last one scheduled before the start of the Games, coincides with the publication of the Government's new legacy blueprint.
"Legacy has been built into the DNA of London 2012," Cameron said. "But by definition, of course, the true legacy of London 2012 lies in the future.
"Though much has been done, I am acutely aware that the drive to embed and secure the benefits of London 2012 is still to come. That is our biggest challenge. It's also our greatest opportunity."

Today I visited the Olympic Stadium. They let me clamber all over it, so here are my views of the park from the rafters. They are all through a fine grill, so the corners are lost, but I think it gives new views.
