View Full Version : National Arena Scotland - Glasgow - 12,500 seats
Boards June 11th, 2007, 04:29 PM National Arena Scotland - Glasgow - 12,500 seats ( not to be confused with the National Indoor Arena and Velodrome being built in Glasgow's East End ).

If anybody knows the Armadillo building at the SECC they'll appreciate this is a fairly large building - apparantly Glasgow Queen Street terminus could be fitted under the dome.

cardiff June 11th, 2007, 05:09 PM Is there any need for scotland to have a national arena? Seems a bit small as well for something with such a grand title.
Boards June 11th, 2007, 05:31 PM They had to call it something. Its nothing to do with the rest of Scotland really - the SECC needs extra capacity and thats why this is being built.

It's not really a national arena it's just a large capacity Concert Hall which will be used for the Commonwealth Games if we get it.
Anyway why shouldn't we have a national Arena?
Boards June 11th, 2007, 05:54 PM No reason. Its hardly small, it will be the third largest arena in the UK - given its design ( which has been designed to maximise acoustic effects ) of a large single bowl with dome roof - its actually a very large building for its type.
cinosanap June 11th, 2007, 06:15 PM Not as pretty as the Amradillo but still nice. :)
Mo Rush June 11th, 2007, 10:47 PM not a fan of the layout but its a great addition to the city
Agent Vengence June 13th, 2007, 02:50 PM i love the location, will be a great addition to glasgow :)
El Supremo June 13th, 2007, 03:34 PM What a useless design, how do they propose to hold basketball/ice hockey in a venure where there are only seats on one side? Who would only put seats on one side?!
Erebus555 June 13th, 2007, 04:51 PM Oof, I hate that design. :puke:

They dont. Its part of the SECC and for concerts and conference speeches. When its finished it will be one of four arenas in the city. Braehead arena does the ice hockey and basketball.
legslikeaspider June 13th, 2007, 06:19 PM I hate the look of those renders. It might look ok at night if they do a nice lighting job on it - perhaps they could make the dome translucent? However, it doesn't do anything to interact with the other lumpy-object type buildings in that part of the city (the moat house, the armadildo, the science centre, the SECC sheds) and as has been said on the Glasgow forums the public realms outside the building look like they might be an utter disaster. Foster and Partners are capable of much, much better. An opportunity wasted.
WeasteDevil June 15th, 2007, 11:33 AM It's actually a huge 12,500 seat theatre, and a very nice one too. Don't know what some of you are complaining about.
Jaeger June 16th, 2007, 02:53 PM Good Scheme, excellent news for Glasgow.
architect-steve June 18th, 2007, 08:53 PM Glasgow is currently the only city in Europe to have three club football grounds with a capacity of greater than 51,000 and now we are going to have four large indoor arenas!
I would like to see these four arenas combined into one of the worlds biggest and best arenas used for sport, music, and talks for example, rather than four smaller arenas. A huge world class venue like that would put Glasgow right up there, easily out stripping anything currently in the UK.
