Lilium owner of the LIM Center popularly called Marriott invited Zaha Hadid, sir Norman Foster, Richard Meier and Anthony Bechu to design 200 m tower in the place of the lower part of the Marriott. Projects ought to be ready in a few months. Lilium wants to apply for a planning permit this autumn, attitude of the city authorities is positive. Tower will have residential and hotel purpose - vacation rental alike.

I can't think of many skyscrapers designed by Zaha Hadid, but in any case it will no doubt be a good new addition to the skyline next to Libeskind's Zlota 44 that should be breaking ground soon.

According to Polish newspaper "Rzeczpospolita", Lilium has applied for a permission to build 257 m building on that spot. The article also confirms that Zaha Hadid and Richard Meier were two of the architects invided to design the tower.

Yes the new news is that the tower will be 257m and the investor has applied for planning permission, Zaha hadid and Richard Meier are among architechts invited to design the building in a closed competition, some newspapers threw Norman Foster in there as well....

I love how on all those threads about "best european skyline 2012" or "best european skyline in ten years" or whatever, people were placing Warsaw skyline way outside the top five best skylines. How supposedly Rotterdam and Vienna skylines are going to be way ahead of Warsaw in a few years and how Warsaw can't compeate with cities like London, Paris or Istanbul when it comes to building skyscrapers...LOL. Eat that!

Mindblowing stuff coming out of Warsaw of late.

Zaha is on fire, that is a stunner, and 257m is fantastic for Europe, should look awesome alongside the other tallies that are planned, especially that 283m one.

Seems like Warsaw is experience a renaissance of late in skyscrapers. Future generations will appreciate the forward thinking of the planners of today when they look across at the world class skyline. These are top notch projects, so all power to them.

Man thats good enough, i like it and Zaha Hadid is no amatur. Apparently it was a 450m tower but Lillium said it was not appropriate to the area and so on...i agree 450m would make all other Warsaw towers look like minitures and f*ck up the Skyline

I guess every1's entitled to its own opinion, but i would give one of my kidneys for a 450m skyscraper in Warsaw. I didn't know it was so tall, now that you told you i'm going to close myslef in my room and cry the whole night :(
I guess it wasn't because of the design or how it would blend with the rest of downtown, but because of how expensive it was.
It would give a good impulse for the whole city, nice promotion for Warsaw and in this world you need to have balls and be just bold brave to be seen.

I'm happy for a 250m anyway.

"As long as the the Polish property market continues to grow and developers are enjoying favorable conditions, Israeli investors will come to Poland," said Avi Friedman, economic attaché at the Israeli Embassy. Tower to Rise in Warsaw, Said E.U.'s Tallest
April 23, 2008
By: Thomas Peretti, Contributing Correspondent

The B.S.R. Group has announced plans to build the tallest tower in the European Union in Warsaw, Poland.

Initial plans for the Lilium Tower, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, call for the building to be approximately 800 feet tall, comprised of 70 stories. Plans for the building call for half the units to be residential and the other half to be condominium hotel units. Restaurants and retail units will make up the ground floor of the building and below.

The Lilium Tower, upon its completion, will become the European Union’s largest structure, The B.S.R. Groups’ chairman Kalman Sufrin, noted in a release. The E.U.’s current tallest building is the Commerzbank Tower, a 56-story building completed in 1997.

The project has an initial cost projection of $500 million. The tower will be made up of 900 to 2,000 square foot units, with about 1 million total square feet. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in 2009, with completion expected in 2012.

The B.S.R. Group is a global development firm specializing in creating urban developments globally. It currently is in the process of building nearly 25 such projects, including ONE Lifestyles Condominiums Las Vegas. The B.S.R. Group has had success in Poland before, having built 2,100 apartments in the Osiedle Europejskie, a neighborhood in Krakow, for which B.S.R. was named an Outstanding Entrepreneur of Krakow by the Krakow Builder’s Association.

The project is going to be approved soon. It will become the first approved 250+ m (to roof) skyscraper in Poland. Zaha Hadid visited Warsaw two days ago: (Zaha Hadid and the president of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz):

Strat u/c 2009,end :2012 or 2013Warsaw's blossoming skyline could soon have a new addition to its funky looking skyscraper family.

Lillium, owners of the Lim Centre in Warsaw perhaps better known as the Marriott recently asked some of the best known architects in the world to draw up plans for a 200 metre tall tower to be sited near the Marriott.

Inviting esteemed architects such as Sir Norman Foster, Richard Meier and Anthony Bechu to compete in a metaphorical fight to the death, they eventually settled on a design submitted by Zaha Hadid who was the first woman ever to win the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize back in 2004.

Appearing like an elongated juicer or something mildly exotic and exciting from the curtained off section of Ann Summers, the tower will have a glass façade and as far as the Warsaw skyline is concerned a distinctive and unique shape.

The tower will have three rounded sections all rising to slightly different heights to create what appears to be a ripple at the towers peak. Heavily balconied, the tower will play host to hotel space, residential apartments and available for rent holiday apartments.

Although the original specification given by Lillium for the tower was 200 metres the final design, if the now approved design remains unchanged it will reach a lofty 257 metres making it the second tallest skyscraper in the city.

Various sources mention that the winning design originally hit a dizzying height of 450 metres but Lillium are reported as saying that it would be to high and out of context with the surrounding area.

With no definite start date released as present its likely many other of the planned projects for the city will be springing fourth like giant daisies by the time this one breaks ground.

Zaha Hadid unveils plan for Warsaw skyscraper
http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/nws/p/afp_logo_51.png

WARSAW (AFP) - Acclaimed Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid unveiled plans Wednesday to build a 240-meter (790-foot) high residential skyscraper in the heart of the Polish capital Warsaw.

http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/afp/20080521/capt.cps.mmr25.210508221244.photo00.photo.default-512x336.jpg?x=400&y=262&sig=2Es.t3rI8QS24wc9.nDnNA--

"We're very excited by this project," Hadid, 57, told reporters during a joint press conference with Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.

"It's a great opportunity really to be able to add to the skyline of the city," Hadid said.

Sleek in form and covered in glass, the skyscraper boasts a design based on a fleur de lys motif. With a total floor space of 101,205 square meters (1.1 million square feet), it will house apartments, a condominium hotel as well as commercial and recreation facilities.

Lilium Tower will face Warsaw's landmark Palace of Culture, a Stalinist-era specimen of socialist-realist architecture.

Investor Lilium Polska aims to complete the project by 2012, but has as yet to receive all the necessary planning permits.

Hadid is the latest in a string of top-name architects bringing their projects to Warsaw.

Last week construction began on a landmark futuristic residential skyscraper designed by acclaimed US architect Daniel Libeskind, while British architect Norman Foster is the author of the Metropolitan, a commercial centre adjacent to the National Opera in Warsaw.

Another Warsaw Skyscraper

Compiled by LAWRENCE VAN GELDER
Published: May 23, 2008
Zaha Hadid will become the latest star architect to put her imprint on Warsaw. On Wednesday in the Polish capital she displayed her design, below, for a 790-foot residential skyscraper to be built in the heart of the city, Agence France-Presse reported. Called Lilium Tower, the sleek, glass-covered building, with floor space of 1.1 million square feet has a fleur-de-lis motif and is to house apartments, a condominium hotel and commercial and recreational facilities on a site facing the city’s Palace of Culture. Some planning permits are still needed; completion is expected in 2012. Last week, construction began on a futuristic residential skyscraper designed by Daniel Libeskind, and Norman Foster has designed a commercial center adjacent to the National Opera.

Really, really outstanding.. Europe's ugliest capital will sure benefit visually from having that thing built. And when it's officially dubbed 'dildo', remember who did it first! ;)

dildo? hardly. i think this is actually an instance of defying the 'dildo' label. for zaha, i also think this is a restrained, but really successful tower. i sure hope this gets built out of all the proposals circulating in this burgeoning business center.

Well, the Palace of Culture and Science used to be referred to as 'patyk' (stick) by locals as far as I remember.
Let's wait and see how Varsovians deal with nicknaming this one. While it isn't as straight dildo-ish as Torre Agbar (called 'El Supositori' by Catalans), I will be surprised if it doesn't get a bunch of raw phallic references :)

Stunning building, good to see its on track for approval.

With the likes of Zaha, Libeskind, SOM, Foster etc shaping the Warsaw skyline there is a real nice refined quality to the buildings proposed.

And 257m is nothing to sneeze at, would have loved to have seen the 450m version.

I mean great building, but that 15m cut is just plain annoying.

Why they cut 15m?
The authorities don't want this building to dominate the surroundings. So they have decided to cut 15m :weird: Odd decision if you ask me.

Yes, that is decidedly loco.

Jeez, those planners just had to make it look like they were doing something to earn their pay packets didn't they.

There is an interview in German newspaper with an architect that works in Zaha Hadid office... and what we know is that the tower will be 260m tall and the construction starts in 2009... we will see...

What is the lower western wing of the Centrum LIM Building currently used for? If the wing is demolished, the Marriott Hotel that is housed in the building would lose any significant functions that were housed in that wing.

It is a fantastic design, and even though i don't like Hadid's other projects so much, I have to say this is definitely one , if not the best of her best designs yet.
What I'm not sure about is the height, is it 257 m, 260 m, or 242 m how Lucky Luke claimed? And on SSP , I found the information that it will be 235m high (http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=69531) , so which one is the right height now?

I don't know what kind of sextoys Zaha uses but this must be here faforite. I like some of Zaha's work but mostley when thy are on a small scale or when she designs the building with a lage surounding. both of witch this project doesn't have. so it become's a sextoy next to a building it doesn't have any conection with. shame.

just one more thing. I think this building is getting build so Poland can say hey look we aren’t seconds class Europeans we have a Zaha. just like a new money millionaire buys a Picasso or a Damien Hirst to say hay look i have money, now I’m one of you. But they forget that old money bought the Picasso’s when he was upcoming. the real world city's builded a Zaha when she was new, the love finding new art & architecture. second hand city's and millionaires buy paintings and architecture for to much money, put it on places where it doesn’t belong and are never recognized as a thru member of the elite.
Oh and than one last thing to prove that I’m right, look at Roman Abramovich. He has all the money in the world but isn’t a thru elite. Why else do you need over 4 supper yachts an need a 5th (the longest in the world ) that’s to show look I’m really rich can I please see me as one of yours. No you are not and never will be.

If a portion of the podium is demolished, then the Marriott Hotel will lose space and may have to get a complete renovation to help it adjust to its reduced podium size. The tower is part office-part hotel.
