Nigerian student, Shaherah Uchenna Obika wins the Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth beauty pageant. She is the first Nigerian to win this title since its inception
FIRST NIGERIAN to win Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth "She wanted to win so badly that it hurt" says Shaherah Uchenna Obika, a 19 year-old student at Southampton Solent University, has won the 18th Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth contest in the theatre of the Polish Centre, Hammersmith, West London.

She is the first Nigerian ever to win the title, and the first winner to do so by way of a "tie-break" since the 6th Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth in 1986. Uchenna, who lives at Palmer's Green in North London, was recommended to the contest by J.M. Promotions (presenters of Miss ACS).

Hilda Agmebemiese, a 19 year-old Ghanaian student recommended by the Miss Malaika UK promotion, was second, and Patricia Reynolds, a 28 year-old payroll administrator from Colindale, Northwest London, who had qualified for the final on the strength of contest success in her homeland Botswana, was third. For the first time in the history of the contest - which has been dominated hitherto by Trinidadians and Jamaicans - African contestants took all three top places. Outgoing title-holder Shaherah Williams spoke with passion and eloquence about her prize trip to Ghana last autumn. Shaherah agreed with the judges' choice of her successor: "She wanted to win so badly that it hurt" Archbishop Dr Bancroft McCarthy declared open the promotion, which was commered by Esta Lumutenga (outgoing Deputy Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth) and former contestant Brenda Gabriel. The vocal entertainment included the United Christian Harmony Group, Angel J, Zika K, Ice T Cool and VocalZones. The Cips were sponsored by Tropical Connections, and prizes on the evening donated by Evoke luxury leatherware, Jewellery by Anne, Ethical Elegance, Shoe Lagoon and Ben Black Photography.

DINA FEKADU:ETHIOPIA
What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?
Horseback riding and swimming.

Name one person other than your parents who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
Nelson Mandela. He showed the world that he is a strong man who believed in his principles and stuck to them when many would have given up. He has led an exemplary life and is an inspiration to millions of people the world over.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
To be a successful lawyer and philosopher and advance the cause of women in my country. I am studying very hard to make my dreams come true and giving my spare time to support worthy events.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was raised in Wollega, Ethiopia, with my family. Growing up we shared a lot of love just like most families and I have very fond memories of my childhood playing with my older sister and learning new things. I had a very normal childhood and upbringing I would say.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?
I firmly believe that as humans we are all basically the same, but my guess is the way we as individuals think and approach certain situations in everyday life is what makes us all different. For example, fundamentally, we are all young ladies proudly representing our countries at the greatest show on earth, Miss Universe 2006, but the way we think is different from each other.

Liya Kebede
Name: Liya Kebede
Agency: IMG,Why Not Models Agency
Born: Addis Ababa、Ethiopia
Birthday: 13,January,1980
Height: 178cm
B-W-H: 81-58-89 (cm)
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown

Top Ethiopian fashion model Liya Kebede was appointed the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in March 2005.

Herself a mother, Liya is helping WHO in its campaign to raise global awareness of maternal and child health issues, and improve the health of mothers and children
Liya Kebede is a supermodel born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As a young woman, Liya did modeling in her native Ethiopia. She has remarked that the modeling industry in that country is quite different from the European catwalks from which she is now seen ubiquitously. In Ethiopia, she had to provide her own shoes for each runway show.

While in school at the French Lycee, a film director spotted Liya and introduced her to a French modelling agent. After completing her studies, she moved to France to pursue work through a local Parisian agency. After a short time, Liya re-located to NYC where she currently resides with her husband Kassy Kebede.

She has been seen on the covers of Italian, Japanese and Spanish Vogue, V, French, Flair, i-D and Time's Style & Design. She is one of a very few ethnically African models featured in major fashion photo shoots and runway shows. She is often used in haute couture and other high-class clothing campaigns, as well as Victoria's Secret (though she is not the curvy, busty Swimsuit model type Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell were).

Liya has been featured in ad campaigns including Gap, YSL, Emanuel Ungaro, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana and currently in S/S 2004 ads for Escada and Louis Vuitton. Liya was recently named the newest face of Estee Lauder cosmetics, the first black to serve as their representative in the company's 57-year history.
This compelled the New York Times to write an article about how Liya has successfully triumphed over the challenges that face models of color in today's industry.

Liya has also established herself amongst the ranks of fashion's elite on the NY - Milan - Paris runway circuit. Her big break came when Tom Ford asked Liya to walk in exclusive for his Gucci A/W 2000 fashion show.

In 2005, she was appointed as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. She currently lives in New York City with her husband (lucky bastard :bash: ) Kassy Kebede and son Suhul.

You can still get banned in Nigeria. Nigeria is a land of contradictions...authors, actors and jounalists challenge society if they can get banned, then a society is not trully free. Nigeria can talk of bollywood(sad that the name is copied from hollywood) but banning an actress no matter what she did is shamefull.

If Obsanjo had killed Babaginda and Abacha then, Nigeria would be a better place today. Those two people (Babaginda and Abacha) did more damage to Nigeria than any Tyrant/Dictator has ever done to any country.

Ajuma Nasenyana was born in Lodwar, Turkana District, on 16th August 1984. Ajuma's first foray into modelling was in the Miss Tourism Kenya competition in 2003, at which she was crowned Miss Nairobi. It is here that she came to the attention of Lyndsey McIntyre of Surazuri modelling agency, who immediately spotted her international potential.

Soon afterwards, Gamma photo agency came to Kenya to do a story on Lyndsey's scouting work and were so taken with the beauty of the 5'10" Ajuma that she became the main feature of the story, which later ran in Gala Magazine, France. The pictures that were taken on this shoot were to provide the basis for Ajuma's portfolio, and these were duly presented to top international agency Ford Models, who signed her up for the Ford Models Supermodel of the World Competition.

November 2003, Ajuma travelled to Europe to build her portfolio prior to the Supermodel finals in New York. She was soon signed up with top agencies in London, Italy, Austria, Spain, Ireland, Canada and Sweden.

At the finals on January 20 2004, Ajuma sashayed down the catwalk in New York to rapturous applause from both the audience and the press. [[1]]She made modelling history when she became the first black model to win a contract (worth USD 50,000) in an international competition open to all races, and from then on she has not looked back.

Ajuma participated in the New York Fashion Week alongside Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek for designers such as Baby Phat and Carlos Mienes before travelling to Milan to model for fashion houses such as Ungaro during the Italian Fashion Week. Paris was the final destination during the winter show season and she particularly struck leading British designer Vivian Westwood, who made her the lead model in her show.

Since the end of the show season, Ajuma has continued with her hectic schedule and has shot several magazine editorials, a video for Lacoste and a catalogue for Issey Miyake. She is currently in London, where she is working.

She was also featured as one of the Victoria's Secret Angels, in their 2006 fashion show.

Tears as Charlize meets Madiba
11/03/:19 - (SA)

Johannesburg - South African Oscar winner Charlize Theron burst into tears when she met former president Nelson Mandela on Thursday. "I love you so much," Theron said when she met the elder statesman at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, Johannesburg.

She told Mandela he was a huge inspiration to her and lots of other people.
He thanked the actress for putting South Africa on the map and praised her for doing so well in her chosen career. "Even those who did not know it now know where South Africa is," Mandela said. People like Theron showed that the present South Africa was different from the country that suffered the scourge of apartheid, he added. Theron wore a simple white dress for the occasion and had her hair tied back in a ponytail.

Patrice Motsepi??? Billionaire as in Dollar billionaire?

Yes, his stake at African Rainbow Minerals Holdings Limited (JSE: ARIM) is now worth R7.94 billion which is $1.1 billion. His other investments outside of mining including his ownership of the Sundowns Football Club that played Barcelona last week are not listed on the JSE, so he will be considerably worth more than the $1.1 billion at ARM Holdings Limited (this firm is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and largely involved in gold, platinum and diamond mining) .

FYI, Africa has a new generation of black dollar billionaires that should hit the forbes lists soon (unless they are discrimated against!!) such as Nigeria's Aliko Dangote (his stakes in two listed companies on Nigerian Stock Exchange are estimated at $4 billion). Others include Nigeria's Dr Mike Adenuga (Globacom founder, GSM operator), Sudan's Mo Ibrahim (Celtel founder, GSM operator), and Ethiopoian Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi (had to change name and religion when he went into Saudi Arabia where he made most of his money). Indeed more billionaires are streaming slowly but surely.

Several more dollar billionaires are believed to be in Nigeria although estimating their worth is difficult as their business are not publicly listed and the dearth of statistics in Nigerian businesses makes it difficult to correctly measure and confirm their wealth.

Aliko Dangote (the one in the middle)

OK NOW BACK TO THE REAL AFRICAN CELEBRITIES

He is the son of jazz percussionist, Mor Thiam. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri but grew up in Senegal[9] until he was seven. He split time between Senegal and the U.S. until he was fifteen, then his family permanently moved to Jersey City, New Jersey and as such he speaks English, French, and Wolof. In Jersey City, he attended Snyder High School,[citation needed] where he discovered hip hop music. He recorded his first song, "Operations of Nature," at the age of fifteen. He was jailed for armed robbery and drug distribution charges, and used his time in prison to work on his music. Upon release, Akon began writing and recording tracks in his home studio. The tapes found their way to SRC/Universal, which released Akon's debut LP Trouble in June 2004. The album is a hybrid of Akon's silky, West African-styled vocals mixed with East Coast and Southern beats.

http://www.akononline.com/images/pic1.jpg

Akon's solo debut album, Trouble was released on June 29, 2004. It spawned the hit singles "Locked Up" and "Lonely," as well as "Belly Dancer (Bananza)," "Pot Of Gold," and "Ghetto". Akon served a three-year jail sentence for grand theft auto, an experience that inspired his "Locked Up".[7] "Locked Up" reached the top 10 in the U.S. and the top five in the UK. His manager Robert Montanez was shot to death following a dispute in New Jersey in December 2005. "Ghetto" became a radio hit when it was remixed by Green Lantern to include verses from legendary rappers 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. In 2005, he released the single "Lonely" (which samples Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely"). The song reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia, the UK and Germany. His album also climbed to number one in the UK in April, 2005. When music channel The Box had a top ten weekly chart, which was calculated by the amount of video requests, Akon's "Lonely" became the longest running single on the top of the chart, spanning over fifteen weeks. Akon then released another single featuring with a New Zealand rapper, Savage with the single Moonshine, which had become a success in both New Zealand and Australia, becoming number one in the New Zealand charts. In 2005, Akon gained more popularity after being featured on Young Jeezy's debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, on the song "Soul Survivor" which became a top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Akon's second album, entitled Konvicted, was released on November 14, 2006. Konvicted included collaborations with Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Styles P. Late August 2006, Akon released the single "Smack That" featuring Eminem, from the album. This single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. The music video for "Smack That" was directed by Raymond Garced. "I Wanna Love You", the second single off Konvicted, was released in September 2006. It is a collaboration between Akon and Snoop Dogg. This single earned Akon his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, and Snoop's second. "I Wanna Love You" topped the U.S. charts for two consecutive weeks. In January 2007, Akon released his third single "Don't Matter" which earned him his first solo number one and second consecutive Hot 100 chart topper. So far, the album has spawned three hit singles which have peaked within the top two of the Billboard Hot 100. Konvicted debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 286,000 copies in its first week. After only six weeks, Konvicted sold more than one million records in the U.S. and more than 1.3 million worldwide. The album was certified platinum after seven weeks, and after sixteen weeks it was certified double platinum. Konvicted was able to stay in the top twenty of the Billboard 200 for 28 consecutive weeks, where it peaked at number two on four different occasions. Currently it has sold more than 2.4 million records in the U.S. and 3.8 million worldwide in 30 weeks.
On October 5, 2006, Akon broke a record on the Hot 100, as he achieved the largest climb in the chart's 48-year-history with "Smack That" jumping from number 95 to 7. The leap is fueled by its number six debut on Hot Digital Songs with 67,000 downloads. The record was broken on April 7, 2007 by Beyoncé and Shakira's Beautiful Liar when it jumped from 94 to 3 on the Hot 100, because of their 150,000 digital downloads on the Hot Digital Songs.

In December 2006, Akon's "Smack That" was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost to Justin Timberlake and T.I.'s My Love

SENEGAL AGAIN

Youssou N'Dour (born October 1, 1959 in Dakar) is a Senegalese singer and percussionist. He helped develop popular music in Senegal, known in the Wolof language as mbalax, a blend of the country's traditional griot percussion and praise-singing with the Afro-Cuban arrangements and flavors which made the return trip from the Caribbean to West Africa in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s and have flourished in West Africa ever since.

http://a461.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00603/06/47/603067460_l.jpg

He began performing at the age of 12. Within a couple of years he was performing regularly with the Star Band, Dakar's most popular group in the early 1970s. Several members of the Star Band joined Orchestre Baobab about that time.

Although N’Dour has connections to the traditional griot caste on his mother’s side, he wasn’t raised in that tradition, learning it instead from his siblings. His parents encouraged him to look at things in a more modern manner, leaving him open to two cultures, with the result that he refers to himself as a modern griot.

In 1979, he formed his own ensemble, the Etoile de Dakar. His early work with Etoile de Dakar was in the typical Latin style popular all over Africa during that time, but in the 1980s he developed a unique sound when he started his current group, Super Etoile de Dakar featuring Jimi Mbaye on guitar, bassist Habib Faye, and tama (talking drum) player Assane Thiam.

Youssou N'Dour is one of the most celebrated African musicians in history. A renowned singer, songwriter, and composer, Youssou's mix of traditional Senegalese mbalax with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban samba to hip hop, jazz, and soul has won him an international fan base of millions. In the West, Youssou has collaborated with musicians Peter Gabriel, Axelle Red, Sting, Alan Stivell, Bran Van 3000, Neneh Cherry, Wyclef Jean, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Branford Marsalis, and others. In Senegal, Youssou is a powerful cultural icon actively involved in social issues.

He is endowed with remarkable range and poise, a composer, bandleader, and producer with a prodigious musical intelligence. The New York Times most recently described his voice as an "arresting tenor, a supple weapon deployed with prophetic authority". N'Dour absorbs the entire Senegalese musical spectrum in his work, often filtering this through the lens of genre-defying rock or pop music from outside Senegalese culture.

In July 1993, an African opera composed by N'Dour premiered at the Opéra Bastille. He wrote and performed the official anthem of the 1998 FIFA World Cup with Axelle Red "La Cour des Grands".

N'Dour's major asset is that is strongly grounded in his culture. Even if he chooses to explore elsewhere, his roots are well established. Some have gone so far as describing him as the African Artist of the Century (Folk Roots magazine). He has toured internationally for almost 30 years. He won his first American Grammy Award (best contemporary world music album) for his CD Egypt in 2005.

In recent years, he has opened his own recording studio, Xippi, as well as his own record label, Jololi.

N'Dour has associated himself with several social and political issues. In 1985, he organized a concert for the release of Nelson Mandela. He was a featured performer in the 1988 worldwide Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour collaborating with Lou Reed to contribute a version of the Peter Gabriel song Biko which was produced by Richard James Burgess and featured on the Amnesty International benefit album The Secret Policeman's Third Ball. He has also worked with the United Nations and UNICEF and he started Project Joko to open internet cafés in Africa and to connect Senegalese communities around the world. He performed at three of the Live 8 concerts (in Live 8 concert, London, Live 8 concert, Paris and at the Live 8 concert, Eden Project in Cornwall) on 2 July, 2005, with Dido.

In 2006, N'Dour played the African-British abolitionist Olaudah Equiano in the movie Amazing Grace, which chronicles the efforts of William Wilberforce to end slavery in the British Empire.

Recently, he has covered John Lennon's Jealous Guy for the CD Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur

Grammy Award-winning group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a Grammy Award-winning male group from South Africa that sings in the vocal style of isicathamiya and mbube. They rose to worldwide prominence as a result of singing with Paul Simon on his album, Graceland. They were formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 (who still leads the group today) and became one of South Africa's prolific recording artists, with their releases receiving gold and platinum disc honors.[1] The group has now become a mobile academy, teaching people about South Africa and its culture.

History

Joseph Shabalala formed Ladysmith Black Mambazo because of a series of dreams he had in 1964, in which he heard certain isicathamiya harmonies, isicathamiya being the traditional music of the Zulu people. Following their local success at wedding ceremonies, Shabalala entered them into isicathamiya competitions. The group were described as 'so good' that they were eventually forbidden to enter the competitions but were welcomed to entertain at them. [2] Although they had been recognised as an isicathamiya group in 1964, they had been singing together since the early 1950s. They released their first album, Amabutho, in 1973. The album, along with many other releases by the group, received gold disc certification. [3] Ladysmith Black Mambazo's collaboration with Paul Simon in 1986 paved the way for international releases, making them widely known across the world.

Ozwald Boateng, The famous London Designer, from Ghana

Ozwald Boateng is a fashion designer. Born in Ghana in the late 1960s and brought up in north London. While studying computing at Southwark College, he was introduced to cutting and designing clothes by his girlfriend at the time. With the help of his mother, who was an excellent seamstress, he started selling his mother's designs to passers-by along Portobello Road. At twenty-three, disllusioned with a mundane job in IT, he had set himself up full-time in business. He began making bespoke suits in 1990, and is widely credited with introducing Savile Row tailoring to a new generation. The first tailor to stage a catwalk show in Paris, Boateng's many clients include Will Smith, Laurence Fishburne, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson, Keanu Reeves, and Mick Jagger.

Keen to learn the best of traditional tailoring, Boateng would find out who best stitched buttonholes, who set sleeves the best way, who made the best linings and so on, at the same time developing his own style and look.

Boateng sees himself as more than a tailor, and more than a designer, so he coined the term 'bespoke couturier'. He was appointed creative director of Givenchy menswear in 2003. On June 22, 2006, the Sundance Channel began airing a reality television series called House of Boateng which follows Boateng's efforts to launch his Bespoke Couture line in the United States.

Boateng lives with his wife and two children in central London, and was recently named one of the 100 Great Black Britons by The Voice and the Greater London Authority. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2006 Queen's New Year's Honours.

"I remember getting cast in Amistad and getting this very strong feeling that I had overshot myself. It was a great shock. It made me realize that this is not a profession you can predict; that you can have all these ambitions and expectations and that they can all be thrown to the wind. What was peculiar about that situation was that my aspirations were so far below what actually happened."

Lemar

(born Lemar Obika, 4 April 1978 in Tottenham, London)

is a British R&B singer who has had a run of chart success in the UK since appearing on Fame Academy on BBC Television. He is one of a number of British acts to have launched a career through reality TV.

Life

Lemar was born to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, and grew up listening to soul music and R&B and used to sing at home with his brother pretending to be The Jacksons. He was eighteen when he had his first concert at the Junior Jam at the Temple in Tottenham supporting Usher. He gave up an opportunity to study pharmacy at the Cardiff University to pursue a musical career. Lemar had some success supporting Destiny's Child and secured a recording contract. Following this, he released his debut single "Got Me Saying Ooh", which did not chart in the UK Singles Chart. When the record deal fell through due to restructuring at the record label he was signed to, he had to eventually take a job working as an accounts manager at NatWest Bank.

Fluent in several languages, including English, Italian, Yoruba and Swahili, he is best known for his roles in the movies Congo (1995) and The Mummy Returns (2001), and the HBO series "Oz" (1997).
IMDb Mini Biography By: Nichol

Trivia

Has a masters in Law from the University of London, but took a different career path when bitten by the acting bug.

Is perhaps best known for his role as the cunning, fierce super-criminal Adebisi on "Oz" (1997).

He went from playing Ernie Hudson's good friend, the guide Kahega to Hudson's Capt. Munro in "Congo," to playing his enemy, the sociopathic Adebisi to Hudson's hard-headed Warden Glynn in "Oz."

He has Nigerians parents

Born on the same day as the Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley.

The son of immigrants from Nigeria, he has played almost entirely African characters despite having been born and raised in England. He usually employs a deep, Nigerian timber while acting, while off-screen he has a very British, somewhat Cockney accent.

He is fluent in several languages including Italian, Yoruba, Swahili, and (of course) English. He can "get along" in a few other languages, including French.

He is a Buddhist and admitted that he had to chant more than usual while playing the brutal character of "Majestic" in Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005).

Personal Quotes

"I've never been really great at trusting anybody, just because of the way I grew up. I was always led to believe you should take care of yourself, trust in your abilities and you're the author of your own destiny. Coming to this show is the opposite." - talking about "Lost"

"The only way you can influence your fate is to put your soul into your performance and hope it registers with the audience."

"I kind of feel for the people on the show who are just coming into the business and this is their first gig. They've got a big letdown coming." - on his younger cast mates on "Lost"

"They gave me a stick and said, 'Knock those three guys out.' There's no better way to make an entrance." - when asked if he was made to feel like the "new kid on the block" when joining Lost

"When a star character on a hit show chooses to leave there's always speculation as to whether or not they've done this or that or not gotten along with this or that person. Straight up: it was probably one of the best relationships I've ever had in terms of developing a character, and I think the character will be a testament to that." -on working on "Lost" (2004)

"The only way I know how to deliver is to focus; some people can turn it on or off - I'd rather stay in character. There was no socializing. I would start two hours before I went to the set and I wouldn't say any other words other than the ones that I needed to say, that's just the way I work and I think that intensity comes across in my characters." -on his "method acting" style, which has sometimes allegedly caused resentment on sets

yinka dare
_______________________________
Yinka Dare (born October 10, 1972 in Kano, Nigeria – January 9, 2004 in Englewood, New Jersey, U.S.) was a Nigerian professional basketball player; a 7-foot-1, 270 pound (122 kg) center.Dare was discovered by Nigerian-born lawyer Lloyd Ukwu during a visit to Lagos in 1991. While Ukwu was driving, he noticed a very tall man sitting on a bench eating a bowl of food. When he asked him how tall he was, Dare said he didn't know. Dare had previously spent most of his free time in his native Nigeria playing tennis, but soon picked up basketball for the first time and flourished in his new sport.
____________________________________________________________________
In the NBA, Dare played 110 games in four seasons with the Nets; in his rookie campaign, Dare played for three minutes (thereby earning over $300,000 per minute and the nickname "The Three-Minute Egg") before getting injured

Dare died in 2004 after collapsing in his home in New Jersey. A medical examiner determined that Dare had a heart attack due to an arrhythmia condition discovered when he was in college.

YINKA SHONIBARE-nigerian super man.
________________________
Yinka Shonibare was born and educated in London while spending much of his youth in his parents' country, Nigeria. This duel nationality, or perhaps the feeling of not sitting squarely within either culture, is central to his work. In 1977 he featured in 'Sensation', the seminal exhibition from the Charles Saatchi collection, at the Royal Academy in London. Showcasing the work of a group of young artists who became collectively known as the 'YBA's (young British Artists), 'Sensation' triggered much discussion about the value of art in society at a time when the idea of Britishness was also being widely questioned.
Shonibare's work - which ranges in form from painting and photography to sculpture and installation - has always sought to make visible the cultural influences of colonisation, not just upon those who have been colonised, but also upon the colonisers. He undermines the assumption of a one-way 'civilising' influence, often in playful ways.

Didier Drogba http://rikruca.dk/images/Flag/Elfenbenskysten.bmp

http://pub.tv2.no/multimedia/TV2/archive/00268/Didier_Drogba_268480a.jpg

Biography
Born in Abidjan on 11 March 1978, Didier Drogba spent his childhood in his home country the Ivory Coast and his adopted France. ‘Tito’ as he was known to friends and family, first left the country of his birth at the age of five. He headed for Brest in Brittany, where his uncle, Michel Goba, was a professional footballer. Drogba spent three years there with his uncle, living in Brest, Angoulême and Dunkerque, before returning home.

Following a downturn in economic conditions, he returned to live with his uncle in Dunkerque, though he continued to move around France as a youngster. It was at this time that he began to play football. In 1991 his parents also travelled to France, first to Vannes and then in 1993 settling at Antony in the Paris suburbs, at which point the 15-year-old Drogba rejoined his family. He signed for local club Levallois, where he rose through the ranks, playing for them in National 2, the fourth french level, aged 18.

Didier is married to Alla, a Malian woman who he met in Paris. They have 3 children, their eldest son is called Isaac. Isaac's favourite player is Thierry Henry and he regularly wears an Arsenal jersey

2006-07
After the departure of Damien Duff to Newcastle United, Drogba switched from the number 15 shirt he had worn for Chelsea since 2004 to the number 11 shirt vacated by Duff. The season was a personal success for Drogba as he hit 33 goals in all competitions (more than his tally in the previous two seasons combined), including 20 in the Premier League to win the Golden Boot.[7] In doing so, he became the first Chelsea player since Kerry Dixon in 1984-85 to reach 30 goals in a season. The breakdown of his 33 goals is; 20 in the Premier League, 6 in the UEFA Champions League, 3 in the FA Cup and 4 in the Carling Cup (League Cup).

http://bp2.blogger.com/_sjWtlWHshUA/RpTnf2-hMhI/AAAAAAAAEkc/MaiooSmHZU0/s1600/drogba%2Bsenvolement.jpg

Among the highlights were scoring winners from outside the penalty area against Liverpool, Everton and FC Barcelona, a 93rd minute equaliser against Barcelona at the Camp Nou and both Chelsea's goals in their 2-1 Carling Cup final win over Arsenal. He also notched two hat-tricks; one against Watford and the other against Levski Sofia in the Champions League, Chelsea's first hat-trick in European competition since Gianluca Vialli in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1997. In his last competitive game that season, he scored the winning goal over Manchester United in the first FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

In January 2007 Drogba was crowned the Ivorian Player of the Year, beating off opposition from such players as Lille's Kader Keita, Lens' Aruna Dindane, and Arsenal's Kolo Toure. In March, he was named African Footballer of the Year for the first time, ahead of Cameroon and Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o and Drogba's Chelsea team-mate, Ghanaian Michael Essien.[8] His performances during the season saw him named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and runner-up to Cristiano Ronaldo in the PFA Player of the Year awards.[9]

In March 2007, Drogba's younger brother Joёl attempted to break into English football, with a trial at League 1 club Leyton Orient. However, the trial proved unsuccessful.

His transfer from Olympique de Marseille to Chelsea in July 2004 is one of those about which the Stevens inquiry report in June 2007 expressed concerns because of the lack of co-operation from agents Pinhas Zahavi and Barry Silkman[10

22. Didier Drogba (Chelsea)

The nice thing with him is that you can either leave him up on his own and lump balls to him or get him involved in the short-passing game. Either way, he’ll tie up entire opposing back fours on his own.

THANDIE NEWTON.....

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/Thandie_Newton.jpg

Thandiwe Adjewa "Thandie" Newton (born 6 November 1972) is a BAFTA Award-winning English actress

Newton was born in Zambia, to a Zimbabwean health-care worker, Nyasha.[2][3], and a white English lab technician and artist, Nick Newton. The name "Thandiwe" means "beloved" in Ndebele and the name "Thandie" is pronounced TAN-dee. Newton played a character named "Beloved" in the film adaptation of the Toni Morrison novel Beloved in 1998. According to Newton, her mother is a Zimbabwean Shona Princess.[4] She was raised in Zambia and Penzance, Cornwall, England, and educated at Downing College, University of Cambridge.

http://sphax666.free.fr/WOO/woo/MI%202/thandie%20newton1.jpg

Newton made her film debut in Flirting (1991). This Australian movie was also a launch pad for a young Nicole Kidman, with whom she has remained friends. She gained international recognition opposite Nick Nolte in the Merchant-Ivory production of Jefferson in Paris as Sally Hemmings, which led to her being cast in Jonathan Demme's Beloved (1998), in which she played the title character and costarred with Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise, and Oprah Winfrey. She played the female lead Nyah Hall in the film Mission: Impossible II. When this film went over schedule, she had to pull out of the film Charlie's Angels, and her character ultimately went to Lucy Liu.

http://img.timeinc.net/people/i/2006/gallery/bestworstdresspoll/thandie_newton.jpg

Newton recently played Kem, the love interest of Dr. John Carter on the American television series ER. She also appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick. She appeared in Crash as a wealthy black woman who, along with her husband, finds herself the target of a racist policeman (played by Matt Dillon). The policeman molests her before ultimately saving her life. Newton was honoured with a BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress in 2006. Crash also won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2005.

Newton was an introducer at Wembley Stadium on July 7, 2007 for the UK leg of Live Earth. She was due to introduce Al Gore to the concert, but he was delayed, leaving Newton to tell jokes to try and entertain the audience, and talking about how she was thinking while driving to the concert.
