I live in Australia. Some of our cities are putting their electric wires underground. The plans are for 20-50 years. They are long term plans, as there is no short term fix. I know Saigon, and to put the wires underground would be a nightmare. If you start small, maybe you can make some places more beautiful, but to do the whole city would be impossible (I think).

Although I do hope it happens!

Tourists don't come to Vietnam to view skyscrapers; they have more & better

Hà Nội sẽ thực hiện hạ ngầm các đường dây đi nổi như cáp, điện, thông tin... trên 5 tuyến phố Đinh Tiên Hoàng - Lê Thái Tổ; Tràng Tiền - Hàng Khay; Nguyễn Thái Học - Kim Mã, Văn Cao - Trần Duy Hưng và Hai Bà Trưng. Dự kiến, việc thí điểm này sẽ hoàn thành năm 2009.

Đồng thời với dự án hạ ngầm trên 5 tuyến phố lớn, thành phố cũng sẽ thực hiện dự án thí điểm sắp xếp treo các đường dây đảm bảo mỹ quan, an toàn hơn trên một số tuyến phố thuộc 9 quận nội thành chưa có kế hoạch hoặc không có điều kiện hạ ngầm (dự kiến thực hiện 2008-2009). Ngoài ra, thành phố cũng sẽ thực hiện dự án thí điểm hạ ngầm 100% các đường dây đi nổi tại một khu nhà tập thể cũ điển hình (dự kiến 2008-2009).

Theo lãnh đạo ban quản lý Dự án Duy tu Giao thông Đô thị, hiện tại công tác khảo sát hiện trạng các tuyến đường dây đi nổi trên các tuyến thuộc phạm vi thực hiện dự án rất khó khăn. Mới đây, ban đã tổ chức 3 cuộc họp và đi khảo sát hiện trường với các đơn vị có các tuyến dây đi nổi. Nhiều đơn vị còn chưa cử cán bộ tham dự, hoặc có tham dự nhưng khi đi trên đường cũng không thể xác định được các tuyến dây thuộc đơn vị mình quản lý do các tuyến dây này không có dấu hiệu riêng cho từng đơn vị.

Một vấn đề khác cũng được đề cập tới quanh việc hạ ngầm các đường dây nổi là tại một số tuyến lẻ đã làm đường ống hạ ngầm, nhưng có nhiều đường dây vẫn không chịu "chui qua".
