@kulani: Does the new Cape Town stadium take the exact same place of the former Cape Town stadium in Green Point? I mean, the construction site you showed in the pic is the same place where the old stadium used to be?

I was pretty sure of that, but since this is the first pic I see where the old stadium isn't there anymore, it made me doubt about it.

Africa needs to take care of their stadiums better.

As iluvnaija explained, its all about the sports leagues developing to a level that can generate enough income to build and maintain plush stadiums. The government has too many things to fulfill so it would not and should not be its priority to build modern stadiums. Appreciating the current problems that are still experienced by the continent will also help you realize why modern stadiums are not exactly the most pressing of issues for Africa right now. It will happen, everything takes time i guess. Rome was not built in a day.

That is the plan, but the reality is that its going to be costly to maintain these stadiums and only a few soccer clubs can operate these stadiums profitably after 2010. So its a tricky one i guess. It looks like the Cape Town one may be handed over to the Western Province Rugby union which is looking to move out of Newlands but they are still taking bids for would be operators of the stadium after 2010.

The PSL (local premier soccer league) in an effort to up its game is even currently going through a war with the SA Broadcasting Corporation for deciding to award their TV rights for the league to the competing DSTV who were willing to pay them $150 million for it while SABC was paying them peanuts. They argue that the $150 million is needed to improve the quality of the league and take advantage of the momentum behind 2010 to impart a lasting legacy to local football. SABC argues that giving the rights to the pay-TV operator will exclude millions of people from watching the PSL matches as they dont have DSTV despite the fact that Dstv is willing to on-sell the matches to SABC. I say let DSTV who are willing to pay get the rights and SABC learn to pay instead of looking for freebies.

Damn, i didn't even realize how close they look to the Tunisian stadiums. That's perhaps one of the biggest problems i have even with people in the advertising and creative circles in Ghana. I remember when we tried to get an advertising agency, they kept coming back with concepts that were clearly a cut and paste exercise until we decided to forget them and get a new young and hungry company that was willing to be creative.

legacy issues around 2010 stadia are certainly tricky but cape town has been po-active rather than reactive. It has allowed private operators to tender to operate the stadium on a lease for 30 years, This will include the operation of the urban park. The stadium will be linked to the waterfront and the stadium podium will be space the private operator may use.

there has been great interest with 19 parties collecting tender documents. The proposals need to be entered by July. This means that later this year the stadium will have a private operator who will start planning events for the stadium and marketing the stadium locally and internationally. Well since they would want to make a profit.

The stadium will be handed over in July 2010 when the world cup ends. But i the stadium is completed before Feb 2010, the private operator may host matches in the stadium/concerts e.g. brazil or england vs south africa.

If the private operator moves in with WP rugby, the future of the stadium would be even better.

I know that a major problem is when the Federal government owns most of the stadiums in Kenya and they have no one qualified to run them. Most African countries do not need mega stadiums, the population in some areas just do not support it but the 10,000 to 30,000 capacity stadiums should be utilized fully and carefully maintained. Kenya should have decent stadiums to host a Nations Cup tournament but they are so negelcted that the National team now only plays in Nairobi.

The Stadium is the default home of the Super Eagles. However a decent amount of the team's matches are played in poorer venues for strategic reasons. World Cup qualifiers and African Nations Cup qualifiers are frequently played there.

The Stadium occasionally hosts teams of the Nigerian Premier League.

The Stadium is has been used for hosting international events like the U-20 World Cup and 2007 Volleyball World Youth Championship and for the chance to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games 2018 World Cup as well as the 2012 Olympic Games.

Although the stadium has an extensive portfolio of events, in recent times the Stadium has been of less importance, due to the fact that International Events are seasonal and other Venues of similar Technicality have been built in other parts of the country.

Africa has the same problem as Latin America with regards to stadiums. I find the idea of a track field stadium so unappealing for someone watching fooball. When your far from the action an element in the atomosphere is dampened. African and Latin American supporters are far more passionate than Europeans but the conditions and quality of stadiums is what lets us down. Hopefully South Africa can lead the way in not only creating modern facilities (in the form of all seaters and over all quality architecture) but bringing the fans closer to the action.

I don't oppose Abuja's national stadium since their planning on hosting the commonwealth games having a multi purpose main facility is a must. Lagos for example shouldn't have its stadium with a trackfield. British style is the way to go close to the pitch.

ps. Look at why Boca Junior's Bombonera is the most intimidating football ground.

Tbite
July 26th, 2007, 07:52 AM
^^ The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, isn't a Football stadium, ad neither is the Surulere Stadium. Both of these stadiums are Multi Purpose stadiums, hence they would be inefficient if they didn't have a track field.

The Nigerian Football Association, recently announced that they plan to build new state of the art stadiums for each team in the Nigerian Premier League. Those stadiums when complete would be football stadiums.

The Teslim Balogun Stadium, is used for athletics events, such as the Mobil Track and field event, and potentially the All Africa Games.

I mean it's not as if Old Trafford, or Stamford Bridge is used for hosting the Olympics, so obviously the stadiums wouldn't have the need for a Track field. The same goes for the "Bombonera" which you made reference to.

Jim856796
July 26th, 2007, 09:12 AM
^^The Teslim Bagolun Stadium has a 20,000 capacity, so it is too small to serve as the main stadium for the All-Africa Games. Is the Surelere Stadium even falling into disrepair?

Tbite
July 26th, 2007, 11:08 AM
20,000? I believe it is 35,000.

It was 20,000 before it was completed this year.

Here is another Picture BTW.
http://www.thenewsng.com/uploads/T-Balogun-rear.jpg

At 35,000 it could still serve as a secondary stadium for an event like the All Africa Games. The event is usually hosted with more than one stadium. The Teslim Balogun stadium is awaiting FIFA, CAF and Olympic listings

Ahh okay, so the fields can't be used for football? I hope the NFA has alot of money to spend because building some 10 new stadiums doesn't come cheap. Africa in genneral needs more European style stadiums, fans close to the pitch.

The spectator stands of the Odi Stadium in Mabopane, South Africa has a unique form which consists of two triangular grandstands, two smaller triangular stands, four rectangular stands, and 20 floating stands. It was constructed around 1988.

These stadiums are ugly as hell. It's a shame comparaing the new stadiums in Euro 2012 to these fisher-price colour wheels.
