It wasn't that modern compare to Seoul, Philippines, or Singapore. If you look at the pictures, the main economic rich part of Saigon itself wasn't anywhere else except for the French part and the Chinese part (Cho Lon controls most Saigon's trading economy). Le Duan was a dumbass though.

At the time, when VN reunified it's nation in 1975, South Korea was still considered a developing nation, it's economy is about Thailand economy right now. On the other hand, Vietnamese instead of rebuilding theirs nation to be prosperous after the war ended, they began their destruction processes on their own soil under their farmer leaders.

The destruction process began with the so called re-education of millions of the intellectuals of VN. A country without intellectuals will become what? A simple question already has an answer, but instead it's was reversed in directions, the intellectuals were subdue by the farmers, by the laborers and worst the people who all their life were spent in the jungles. This process alone brought the country backward ten years. Next, the process of leveling all people, leveling the whole country to become equal, no one can be better than the so called Party's members; everyones were forced to be lower than their farmer leaders, the commies . A country without classes will become what? The answer is not so difficult to figure out; it will become a society with farmers, laborers and worse beggars vendorers. How did the commies carry out this process?

That period was definitely hardship, however, IMO it was inevitable since the French colonization era. It sucks but we have to deal with it this day. That's why I'm supporting the government right now because I'm optimistic that Vietnam is recovering and building back its feet :cheers:

that's the first time I get to see the French building along the Saigon waterfront.......it would be nice if the ship didn't blocked the building. I think that must be the building that they mentioned in Saigon history books. a bank owned by 2 Swiss brothers in the 1910, with lots of decorative motifs and arts on the facade.

Hồi xưa SG cũng gọn gàng ngăn nắp quá, cái chợ Bến Thành, bến Bạch Đằng thấy đẹp hơn giờ , UBND ko đẹp bằng bây giờ còn đường Nguyễn Huệ có nhiều xe hơi, cứ tưởng hồi đó có xe xích lô, xe ngựa chứ. Nhưng mà sao nhìn mấy tấm hình cũ có cảm giác buồn buồn dù lúc đó mình cũng chưa đẻ nữa.

The Korean war ended in 1954 . South Korea with the United Stated backed had since rebuilt their country. After half a century continuously developed, south Korea is ranked number 11th. in world's economy. At the time, when VN reunified it's nation in 1975, South Korea was still considered a developing nation, it's economy is about Thailand economy right now. On the other hand, Vietnamese instead of rebuilding theirs nation to be prosperous after the war ended, they began their destruction processes on their own soil under their farmer leaders.

The destruction process began with the so called re-education of millions of the intellectuals of VN. A country without intellectuals will become what? A simple question already has an answer, but instead it's was reversed in directions, the intellectuals were subdue by the farmers, by the laborers and worst the people who all their life were spent in the jungles. This process alone brought the country backward ten years. Next, the process of leveling all people, leveling the whole country to become equal, no one can be better than the so called Party's members; everyones were forced to be lower than their farmer leaders, the commies . A country without classes will become what? The answer is not so difficult to figure out; it will become a society with farmers, laborers and worse beggars vendorers. How did the commies carry out this process?

First, the sophisticate factories' equipments were began to unassemble to transport to the Northern part of VN where they began to reassemble to elevate the north and de-elevate the south; therefore balance out the country. With their lacks of machanical knowleges and the parts and many other neccessities to erect a factory, all the equipments became useless and waist. This process alone, bring the whole country five years backward. Second, the commies collected everything the people produced. The people made products and the commies confiscated it and sold back to the people. Who want to work anymore without a benefit for themselve but the commies? THe people began to be lazy, not by their nature but were forced to be that way. Vietnamese were well known for their hard work, but under the commies leadership they became who they weren't and this brought the country's wealth level down another ten years. Whose sins are these? The commies!!!!!! Third, the commies consficated the people's belonging included of golds, dollars, houses, and lowest of all the vendorer's tools such as: baskets, tables and chairs, rice, lemons, gingers, salts and .... if they don't registered and pay tax to the commies. How much can they make with all of these cheap products? Not significantly. THis process alone made the people another ten years poorers. More and more unhuman processes were done to the people that I can't describe in all. THe one that was most important and benefitial for the country,but was forbidden was the isolation with all the capitalist countries in the world, without investments from the capitalist countries, VN slow down it's development for many so years.

All of the hardship above, I would considered VN is actually going backward at least forty years if use it's economy level at this moment as the start mark for measurement.

If you look at pretty much all Southeast Asian countries, they turn out all like that : philippines, thailand etc. Everything seemed so orderly in the 60s and 70s, and got really chaotic.

The way I see it, what is done is done. People can cry, complain, nag all they want but that's really not going to do anything useful for anybody. For Vietnam right now, there is only way way to go and that is up. There is no possible way this progress can be reversed- so what's the point in crying about the past? It just shows backwards thinking.

This decision demands a major national commitment of scientific and technical manpower, material and facilities, and the possibility of their diversion from other important activities where they are already thinly spread. It means a degree of dedication, organization and discipline which have not always characterized our research and development efforts" and we all know what happen. I don't want to hear anymore excuses. :ohno:

yeah, sometimes I find myself wondering if it would be better for North Vietnam to lose the war. Uhm ... well, it's the past and is irreversible anyway.

Of course it's better. South Vietnam had no initiative to unify the country. If North VN didn't win the war we would see a very poor and backward northern half I guess no one with a heart wants to see that.

China and Russia also did not want North Vietnam unify the country...

The only thing that they want is put USA in a trap and trouble forever (together with it is divided Vietnam forever), but history and God has stayed at the side of Vietnamese's WILL.....

North VN made it's own decisions and had to pay for its causes. Sino-Vietnam war 1979 is one lesson.

Ôi, các bác thấy thế nào chứ giờ dân số SG gấp đôi ngày xưa, thành phố cũng lớn hơn nhưng riêng khoản xóm nước đen và slums thì không nhiều như trong ảnh trên...

Trong khi đó trước những năm 80 HN gần như ko có Slum thì những năm 90 lại bắt đầu hình thành các khu xóm liều :(

Vấn đề là chất lượng sống. Những khu xóm nước đen SG giải toả được là cả một nỗ lực lớn, nhiều lúc phải dùng vũ lực cưỡng ép. Còn Hà Nội không có nhà ổ chuột nhưng xét về vệ sinh, chất lượng sống thì thực chất những khu chung cư cũ và khu phố cổ cũng là những slum lớn. Vií dụ như ở Mỹ có những khu phố da đen đầy tệ nạn bề ngoài cũng khang trang, rộng rãi. Ngược lại Hà Nội có những khu nhìn tồi tàn rách nát nhưng bên trong điều kiện sống khá hơn hẳn. Saigòn tuy bớt được khoảng 40% nhà ổ chuột tạm bợ ven kênh này kia nhưng các quận ven như Bình Tân thực chất là một khu slum khổng lồ, điều kiện sống hơn nhà ổ chuột một chút nhung không đường xá, không vệ sinh, không quy hoạch... y như một đống xà bần.

Hà nội nhiều khu tập thể cũ bẩn thỉu và cuộc sống phức tạp kinh khủng lắm (nhưng còn phụ thuộc vào khu tập thể của ngành nào ban nào....)

Nhiều khu bên ngoài trông tồi tàn rách nát nhưng ít cơi nới, bên trong tiện nghi khó đâu bì được...

Khu tập thể Đại Học, Bệnh Viện, Viện Nghiên Cứu, Cán Bộ... phải khác với khu tập thể Nhà Máy, Công Nhân.... ^^^^^^

Dude, what the hell are you talking about that VNCH did not want to reunify with the North? Of course they do just look at the national flag it has 3 red stripes and one of the stripes is for the North. Survival was foremost. The VNCH regime wanted to reunify with the North but was not willing to go to WAR in order to do it like the Viet Cong. China and USSR are two totalitarian regimes so they are more than willing to fund NVN's war of aggression whereas the US was more than willing to have a status quo of a free southern half and not willing to back a war to go North and reunify by force. Western democracies usually want peace and they have constituents that are anti-war. NVN had better friends who were willing to provide the lethal aid to fund the delusional sociopaths in North Vietnam to foment war and spread miseries all over Indochina.

East Germany reunified with W. Germany peacefully not at gunpoint. Hopefully the reunification of North Korea by South Korea will be peaceful soon when the North Korea regime implodes into a million pieces.

You're right I never lived under VC. My parents left when our country (VNCH) fell so I never had direct life under VC. Thank Goodness.

To me, it is very simple! Everywhere I see communism rear its ugly head like in E. Europe, S. America, Africa, Russia, and Asia it has proven to be a disaster. Not one country or region has proven that communism was workable and was a success. It is a belief built upon lies after lies. The lies are so obvious and blatant that it confuses the liars from knowing the truth. They lie so much that they are deluded into believing it is the truth. That's why you get these children of VC still defending their parents' doctrine.

I don't hate VC or their children. I don't know them to hate them. I just hate what they have done to Vietnam. I hate their blindness that continues to blind the country from becoming a regular and normal country.

The simple truth is that Vietnam under VC is definitely not free and civilized as compared to her neighbors. Vietnam has either has to accept that VC way of nation building is dysfunctional and outdated or Vietnam can remain under the great illusion while her neighbors advances into the next stage of development. Why is that Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand are freer, more educated, more prosperous than Vietnam? I'm sick of Vietnam being last and not equal to her neighbors.

I just simply think communism and their way of doing things are a mistake.

If it were a success, then no one would be complaining. Viet people are no different from the rest of the world. The rest of the world hated communism too. So why would Viet people be different?

Saigon đã hoàn toàn bị phá nát bởi 1 lũ ngu đần bệnh hoạn và con cháu của chúng. Nhìn saigon hiện nay như 1 thành phố nào đó ở Phi Châu. Có thể phải mất khoảng 5 chục năm nữa để saigon có thể lấy lại được vị thế như ngày xưa.

I once heard along time ago that the sculpture of the a soldiers facing the NHA HAT SAIGON was bad "phong thuy" because they are attacking their own building.

Also the design of the DINH DOC LAP (or Dinh Thong Nhat) was bad "phong thuy" also because form the street the sun screens look like the "bones of the soldiers!"

May be this had some thing to do with the South Vietnam government down fall.

Còn cái nhà hát lớn này giờ trông đẹp hơn rồi, trước đây mình thấy cái mái màu đỏ xấu quá nhưng mấy hôm trước thấy mái đã chuyển qua ngói màu đen cửu long đúng kiểu Pháp.

I even like the cop uniforms of that era. They look like cops. VC cop uniforms are just plain ugly looking, 3rd world rags. The combination of red and green olive??? 2- tượng Hai Bà Trưng ở quảng trường Mê Linh, sau này là Trần Hưng Đạo
3-tượng trần hưng đạo thứ 2, ở vòng xoay quảng trường dân chủ
4-tượng Thánh Gióng ở Ngã 8 Phù Đổng
5-tượng Phan Đình Phùng ở Ngã 6 Chợ Lớn
6-tượng An Dương Vương ở trước Hội Nghị Diên Hồng
7-Hồ COn Rùa, xây theo con rùa đội bia đá, bị Việt CỘng giựt mìn nổ
8-tượng Petrus Ký mà VC cũng phá đi sau lưng nhà thờ Đức Bà

đó là kể sơ sơ về khu trung tâm saìgòn, vào cùng thời này Đảng CS xây cho các anh hùng Việt Nam tượng đài nào? LêNin? và một vườn hoa Lê Nin? tượng đài cảm tử quân, cũng như hàng ngàn tượng đài theo chủ nghĩa vô thần CS, chẳng có ăn nhập gì tới lịch sử VN, như vậy là yêu ước sao? Mỹ nó bị mang tiếng "chiếm" nhưng miền nam đâu có xây cái tượng nào cho thằng Mỹ ngoại xâm? Thiết nghĩ dân tộc Việt đi thờ Karl Marx lập tượng Lê Nin cái đó mới gọi là chiếm chứ?
Tới ngày nay, năm 2006 Hà Nội mới dựng được tượng Lý Công Uẩn, mà so sánh với những công viên Lênin, và hàng ngàn công viên có tượng đài CS thì tượng Lý CÔng Uẩn thua hết về thời gian lịch sử xây dựng cũng như không gian. ngoài Lý Công Uẩn ngày nay Hà Nội xây được tượng anh hùng lịch sử nào? người ta xứ than là không có d8ủ ngân phí để xây tư7ọng đài cho các anh hùng lịch sữ, nhưng lại có tiền xây hàng ngàn tượng đài CS từ nam tới bắc, như vậy không phải Liên XÔ "chiếm" việt nam thì gọi là gì?

Cái City theater, hình trước 75 và sau này cái nào là original vậy mọi người??

Nhưng làm tượng đài theo kích khối lớn thì đúng là phải làm đầu to hơn thân, vì người ta chiêm ngưỡng từ bên dưới, nếu bức tượng đúng kích cỡ, thì sẽ thấy đầu nhỏ. Giống bức tượng vua David nổi tiếng bên Rome, cái đầu và thân rất to so với chân, vì bức tượng đó tác giả đặt trên cao, ai cũng đứng dưới nhìn lên.

Thời xưa cả Đông Nam Á này chả là cái đinh gì đối với saigon. Nghe nói bên trong thương xá Tax những năm 60 đã trông tương đương với ngày nay rồi.

Sau khi được mấy anh CS giúp 'giải phóng' thì bây giờ Saigon chả là cái đinh gì với mấy anh khác ở ĐNÁ mặc dù luôn là tp phát triển nhất VN.

Thì bọn CS toàn là 1 lũ láo lếu đểu giả cả mà. Miệng thì suốt ngày chửi tư bản, chửi Mĩ, trong khi toàn ăn tiền của tư bản, con cháu đều gửi ra nước ngoài học. Bây giờ đố kiếm được con 1 thằng lãnh đạo nào ko đi học nước ngoài!

Khúc đó nối liền với 1 con kênh khác làm ra ba nhánh, nên người Pháp xây cầu-ba-cẳng còn gọi là Le Tripod Pont
tiếc là ngày xưa người ta xây nhà ổ chuột bên dòng kênh, rồi từ từ lấp luôn con kênh. Bây giờ ai đi chợ Bình tây ra phía sau sẽ thấy rất nhiều nhà ổ chuột, và nền đất thì giống như dưới quê, không có trải nhựa đường, không có lót gạch, nhìn rất dơ, mặc dù chợ Bình Tây có rất nhiều du khách ngoại quốc. Ta nghĩ nên giải toả phía sau chợ Bình Tay và trả lại con kênh này.

Hey Coolink, ta mới tìm thấy ảnh của Majestic hotel lúc sửa theo trào lưu art-deco, hình như đến năm 90 sau này ngta mới chế lại nguyên bản đúng ko? Vì lúc tổng thống Pháp đến Saigon năm 95 97 gì là ta thấy Majestic theo nguyên bản rùi:

Cái hotel Majestic này đẹp dù ko đc original lắm. Việc nội thất thay đổi ko chỉ riêng Majestic mà cả Hôtel Continental, Grand Saigon... cũng bị. Ta có đọc cái chung cư bây giờ là nhà sách Nguyễn Huệ trước 75 tường có ốp gỗ nhưng mà thời bao cấp ngta lột hết gỗ ra chẻ củi nấu nướng ngay trong chung cư luôn. Chung cư eden cũng chịu chung số phận như vậy :bash::bash:

Bây giờ thì nhìn tấm hình này, cái Majestic bên góc trái hình là xây lúc nào mi có biết ko vì ta hấy nó ko có trong hình saigon trước 75 của mi:

bên trái là toà nhà chung cư 8 tầng cải tạo năm 2002
bên phải là toà nhà 4 tầng nằm hết góc đường, ngày xưa là chung tâm thương mại đẹp lắm, không hiểu sao khách sạn Majestic không mua hết dãy nhà, mà xây lên đầu nó 2-3 tầng.
toà nhà 4 tầng to lớn đó ngày nay bị chia thành nhà ống hết, nhưng nghê sĩ Bảo QUốc có mua 3 căn nhà, và bây giờ là nhà hàng Maxim. cũng xây theo kiến trúc Pháp, nhưng nhìn rất lẻ tẻ so với toàn bộ toà nhà cũ

are you serious you don't know AIWA?its one of the biggest Janpanese's electronics company in the world before 1975 in south Vietnam until 2002 took over by Sony corp. ,my dad still had the vintage tape record made from 1971,still work.

by the way I really like the original Majestic design,the balcony are awesome.

Cái này là xe Mô-bi-lết (Mobylette) đây mà. Cái này hồi xưa nhà tui có 1 cái, giống xe đạp điện bây giờ, hết xăng là đạp, nhớ nhất là cái tiếng nổ bình bịch của nó :D

Aiwa: ổn áp aiwa, tủ lạnh aiwa, máy giặt aiwa, cassette player aiwa,...hồi xưa làm mưa làm gió trên thị trường ở saigon, sau này bị bọn đàn em như sony rồi samsung chiếm hết.
