Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm Matt, and I'm from Canada!
Next summer, I will be travelling to Sydney, Australia for World Youth Day, and I am also planning on working in a small coffee shop in Murchison, near Nelson in New Zealand. The thing is, my great grand parents are buried in Auckland.

I was wondering if you guys can help me out. I am looking for an incredibly cheap way to get from Sydney to Auckland so I can visit their grave, then a discount bus or other form of transit to Wellington, where I will meet my friend and take me to Murchison. Also, I am looking for a cheap place to stay in Wellington and in Auckland... a youth hostel or something. Any recommendations?

Thanks for your help guys :D

-Matt

Ps. NZ'ers ROCK!! LOL

Yep, for buese try www.intercitycoach.co.nz they're the best service with the best buses. For real cheap (but not great buses lol) try www.nakedbus.co.nz
For cheap but comfortable hostels, try www.yha.co.nz they have hostels around the country in most of the main centres.

It only runs on friday saturday and sunday but if you're going to wellington from auckland I reccomend you go by train.

Also there is a backpackers literally opposite the railway station. Theres also a shuttle bus between the railway station and the interisland ferry terminal.

In terms of getting from Sydney to Auckland, just hit up the airline websites and you'll find the best rate!

www.airnewzealand.com
www.flypacificblue.com
www.qantas.co.nz
www.emirates.co.nz

The budget airlines don't fly through Auckland unfortunately, but Air New Zealand has a Tasman Express service that is fairly cheap, and you might even find a cheap flight on Pacific Blue connecting with Virgin through Brisbane. Hope you have a great time in NZ and if theres anything else you need to know just ask us!

Well, $25 NZD sounds pretty good for the bus, lol but thats 12 hours! $109 for the train, also 12 hours. OR $89 by air. Air options looks the best i think... Fastest and not badly priced. Now I am ljust looking to get to Auckland from Sydney for cheap! Thanks guys!

Yea domestic air travel is super cheap, which is why competitors to Air New Zealand struggle so much - the fare structures are already akin to a budget airline. At one stage fares from Auckand to Wellington were around $50 plus taxes (if you got the cheapest seats)

Apart from the English speaking ones sounding a lot like Americans, not all that unlike us kiwi's and roo's!

I spent a couple weeks in Vancouver a few years back, and we had a Canadian exchange student with us for a couple of months - from Nova Scotia.
