I'm currently working on a 3D city in Cinema 4D. This is a completely made up skyline. Its still in early stages but basically I used as a template Gwadah in Pakistan! Peculiar choice I know, but its on a thin isthmus peninsula, which means its not going to grow uncontrollably large, as its hemmed in on all sides by the sea. As its based on a real place, its developing more naturally as well.

Anyway, I've modellled the main low rise existing buildings, and now I'm moving onto my own stuff, hahaha!! Theres already a batch of highrises under construction on the left, and flats in the foreground. All the buildings are to scale. Most of the key buildings have names (which is easier to keep track of when building them), the tower in the foreground has been christened Memorial Tower and its 102m.

Comments welcome. I'll post regular updates.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah I used a real plan, just copied screenshots in Google Earth of Gwadah and then tiled them together in Photoshop, so theres quite a lot of detail. Then I approximately made the terrain, hills and mountain in the background. If you look at Gwadah in Google Earth, it looks vagually similar. All the low rise exisitng buildings were extruded up as simple blocks, their pretty crude, but your eye dosen't notice.

THe textures I hand drew, scanned into Photoshop to edit and then simply applied to the sides of the extruded blocks. In fact other than the map (and sky) everything else is hand textured. All the high rise buildings and mid rise do not exist in reality. So I'm simply using the existing Gwadah as a backdrop I suppose. Plus as its a desert I can get away without having trees (always labour intensive when rendering!)

I'm rendering more as I type. What I call the midtown area, which is in the middle of the peninsula to the left (where the distant towers are). This is an on going project, so I'll keep you updated.

pingyao
June 27th, 2007, 02:53 PM
Okay...FlyingDutchman, I simply copied aerial views and joined them together in photoshop to form a big map. Then applied this to a plane object in Cinema 4D. I could then slice the plane to make the outline of the buildings and simply extrude them, using the map as an approximate template. However, now all the new buildings are made up, so I can just create them without a template below.

Rahmani I took your advise! I've created a couple of palm tree models, this one is the tall one. Its pretty render heavy though, even by instancing the model. I have to say I'm impressed by Cinema4D - its quite an under-rated 3D programme (everybody seems to use 3D Studio Max). It does what I ask it to do, without too many frustrations, which is all I can ask really.....

I have a Compaq 2.2ghz with athlon processor. I find Athlons good for 3D stuff, even with 100,000s of polys, its still pretty smooth moving around the scene. Rendering can be slow, especially with radiosity. I render each image at 3000x2000, this gives enough detail , without each render becoming monstrously big. The most important thig is to render in multipasses i.e reflection, lumination, shadow etc, so you can adjust it in photoshop. Those renders don't look as polished until you play about with them in a photo editing software.

I've done a few more.

Cinema 4D isn't a bad program. I used it for a while (even used 3DS Max 4.2), but since I learned trueSpace and Rhino 3D first, I always gravitate back to them.

You definately need a good video card to work with this amont of polys.

pingyao

yeah, but I dont find Rhino that good to deal with a large amount of polys, and to extrude lots stuff.

not counting the poor render capabilities of Rhino, even with Flamingo renderer. Of course, if you are using a better renderer for Rhino, like Maxwell, things change a lot.

But even so, I consider Rhino better for detailed modelling of small stuff. Like modelling an IPOD. Or modelling a shoe or a car. Or modelling furniture.

But to model a highrise or a city, I think polygon programs (Rhino is NURBS) are better, be it 3DMax or Sketchup.

pingyao
July 4th, 2007, 04:54 PM
Once you get too many seperate objects C4D slows down and runs out of memory - As I found with the palm trees (which explains why theres not many). However by using a plane and then extruding multiple blocks up from this it for the buildings it works much better - well I haven't run out of memory yet. Rendering varies from 4 hours to plus 12 hours.

True, Rhino doesn't have the best rendering engine. I love the way you model with it though. One thing I like about Flamingo is the fairly realistic plants/trees you can add to the scene (they're not copies. Each one looks a bit different in shape than the last one).

I have sketchup on my PC, but never used it, so can't really comment. From what I've heard sketchup can lag though. I use Cinema 4D, which has crashed a few times with too many polygons (As you can imagine trying to build a city naturally involves many thousands of polygons), but generally pretty good performance.

pingyao
September 21st, 2007, 11:44 PM
Thanks for the comments. I have 1GB of ram, whicH I think is more important than graphics card, and processor speed for 3D work.

I tried HDRI (High Dynamic Range Lighting) maps on test renders, but it took too long (+3 days per render?!?!). So gave up. I render each view as a multipass file, with shadow, luminosity, diffuse layers etc. The most important thing though is to have a radiosity layer. I use a radiosity filter called stochastic, which gives the lighting a realistic feel - bounces light about well. Then its just a question of bringing all the layers into Photoshop to tweak them into the final image.

Cinema 4D is considered one of the easiest professional 3D applications on the market. However saying that its very, very in depth. I don't even do or know half the stuff it does, I stick to the 3D modelling, rendering side, but it also has a powerful animation aspect as well. Try and get a freebie version, from magazines/website/mate first if you can. thats what i did, and then just play around, see if it suits you.

Chrisheem booming.

The council have confirmed that Chrisheem has officially the highest concentration of new construction and proposed projects outside of Dubai!
There are currently 11 projects under construction in the city with towers above 200m and 3 projects commencing with towers over 300m.

Downtown, has seen a slow down recently with the completion of the main Harbour Avenue area. However new buildings are already rising that will overtake this zone including the Harbour City Complex where reclaimed land from the harbour has already been formed. Rumours are suggesting there will be a 400m + tower here, which would easily surpass Chrisheems current tallest -Ocean Heights 1 at 319m.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb117/chrisjewiss/Image178.jpg
/\ Downtowns Harbour Avenue cluster with the land reclaimation in foreground for proposed Harbour City Complex - Chrisheems tallest??

Midtown, which has been stagnant since the completion of Chirsheems second tallest the Dancorp World Tower - will also see a rash of new buildings, from architects all around the globe:)

The largest concentration of new projects however will be in the Al Hamed area to the north. With the recent completion of Dancorp Vita at 210m this area already has 7 projects which will be taller including the 380m SCA tower, which would officially become Chrisheems tallest.

Well the Downtown area is developing nicely. After completion of the landfill area in the harbour, Harbour City Phase I Tower A is beginning to rise. The exact height remains a mystery. It is planned to become the tallest building in Chrisheem on completion, although there are other projects, visions & proposals that would be taller.

Chrisheems gets a new tallest building.

Today the SCA Towers short-lived record as tallest building in Chrisheem was broken. The HarbourCity Tower A has now reached 391m overtaking the observation tower. It also means the focus has gone back on Downtown, which has been a little overshadowed recently by the rise of Al Hamed. The towers final height is still a secret, however undiclosed reports from the enginnerring company are putting it around the 410m mark.

Yeah, give us a closer look! I like how it sits there right at the forefront of the skyline. Reminds me of the way the IFC towers over the port of Hong Kong.

Xlchris, Trilogy has always been the third highest of what's going up currently. Zee's is 550m I think? Mine is 535 (I think I should add on a 50m spire, damn you Zee!), then Trilogy at 480.

I still think Pingyao is designing the crown jewel of his empire in secret and we're going to see a post for "Burj Chrisheem" or something that is going to be like 1000m+ and make all our towers look like little kids. Of course that is why this is all fun to watch :)

300m Towers now dominate Chrisheem

That was the headlines for the Chrisheem Daily Press (Expat English Newspaper). The Cities skyline is on crack! Well not quite, its not Dubai yet! A month ago there were just two 300m plus buildings. Now there are seven! Including the newly completed 2nd and 3rd tallest, both in Al Hamed, which along with the SCA Tower are all in the mid to late 300s. With the completion of the first plus 400m tower in Downtown not far off, the next spate of construction could well be a series of 400m towers.

Thanks for the comments. Skyhi71 - I think thats Telecentre Tower 5, you can see, rather than Dancorp World. It looks similiar, not as high. Incedently there is currently a communcation mast being erected on the top of this building, which would make it the second tallestin Chrisheem, although masts are always controversial, plus is what never part of the original design.

The Gulf Steel building was erectred in record time (I got bored, and wanted it done)!

The fog is mainly pollution, although Chrisheem can be windy due to its coastal location, which helps disperse the smog.

First Megatall?

A newspaper today printed a short article about a possible megatall for Chrisheem...

Chrisheem District Council yesterday announced a visionary proposal for a skyscraper development in the Al Hamed commercial District of the city. A spokesman outlined the plans for a commercial development known only as 'The Pinnacle'. He explained the tower would be in the region of 6-700m's and would be by far the tallest proposal that the city had seen. He added that the proposal was at this stage only a vision and was currently being examined to see whether it was viable, both economically and practically. Detractors have suggested Chrisheem could be over-developing and could see an economic slump if the current world climate remains wobbly. However developers have expressed recent optimism and a need for additional commercial and residential space due to the cities particular local economic success. It remains to be seen if the council will opt for such a dramatic and expensive solution, although some involved in planning have discussed the possible benefits of a landmark building, pointing at Dubai's promotional success with the still to be completed Burj Dubai.

Make of that what you will.......

HarbourCity Tower A has been completed. The total height from street level entrance to the tip of the structure is 412m. The building has a total of 92 floors. It has offically become the 7th tallest building in the world in between Citic Plaza (391m) and 2 International Finance Centre (415m). Commentators have been struck by the similarity between its form and location to that of 2 International Finance Centre in Hong Kong. However Chrisheem's council have said it is a sleeker tower and unique to their city, its design came out of the location on a small reclaimed portion of land and the need by developers to achieve the required office space.

By the way... is that beach in your city panorama within Chrisheem's borders? I'm working on a hotel and that'd be a killer view, not to mention the killer surf!

Well the beach is actually one of my photos, however the location on the model from where that view was taken does exist (it is modelled), its way out of the city though and surrounded by not much at all really.

Downtown gets new land

The largest single construction project in the cities history is underway in Downtowns harbour. A massive land reclaimation scheme is taking place forming a significant new portion of land in the bay. The project comprises 80,000 square metres of reclaimed ground between the cargoport facility and HarbourCity Tower A. The cities council are expected to announce plans for a marina/residential complex and additional office space, with a possible hotel and cruiseship terminal. No plans have yet been submitted, but with land space at a premium in Downtown this is sure to be an exciting development.

Mystery Site

A large plot of ground has been excavated in the Al Hamed area immediatelly south of the Capital Centres twin towers and Dancorp Vita. There are rumours that this could be the site of the proposed megatall tower known only as the Pinnacle. An official announcment is expected next week regarding this project.

City unveils concept for 'The Pinnacle' along with a proposed height of 680m. So far these are the only details. However judging by the sketch, the dimensions are about 85m in width. The design is rather 'retro', the city wanted a more traditional approach for a supertall. Some critics have said its a little unimaginative, however the council preferred a more classic look. The overal effect will probably be less Crysler building in reality, due to its sheer size.

May I offer a suggestion for the Pinnacle concept? Though I like the overall shape of it, and agree with the retro aspect I think it can use some flair.

Perhaps each one of those arched pieces at the top of the tower could be peeled back from the building, kinda like a flower blooming. Here is a picture to let you know the idea, based off your original concept...
http://inlinethumb58.webshots.com/31289/2893201550100707270S500x500Q85.jpg

But then again this design feature would probably reduce the area of floor space, so maybe it isn't such a great idea.
However, this is your design and it's up to the council to ultimately decide what is built.

Pinyao, due to the fact that i have not enough time, i cant render and i do not have a scanner to design the park, shopping/residential complex... I sujest that somebody designs the park and the shopping center + Hotel and residential tower on my plots. And if I agree with the design. I will propose it to the city council.

In fact im just searching an architect for my firts project.

So I just want to develop projects in the city with my company. Do you agree Pingyao?
If there is someone who would like to be the architects of my new developement projects... Just PM me! Thanks.

Mo Rush - I still havent received ure first proposal. Im sorry that i havent designed something yet... Maybe the architects im searching can help us ;)!
