Qatar Son 333 September 1st, 2007, 12:54 PM Qatar MotoGP race to be held at night next year
misano, Italy • Qatar’s 2008 MotoGP race will be staged at night, organisers said here yesterday in what is believed to be the biggest lighting project in the world for any sporting event, guaranteeing complete visibility in the race which will move to a Sunday evening slot.
The forthcoming 2008 Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar will be held on March 9 in an unprecedented addition to the MotoGP World Championship, officials announced at a press conference here yesterday.
Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Musco Lighting’s President Joe Crookham and Vice-President Jeff Rogers were joined by Nasser bin Khalifa Al Attiyah from the QMMF (Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation) and FIM President Vito Ippolito to make the news official, during which the reasons for the move were explained.
Making the announcement, Ezpeleta said: “Changing the Qatar race to a night time schedule allows for a better synchronisation with European television schedules, where the race can be made available in the primetime Sunday slot. This is obviously a big boost for the broadcasters, and a landmark moment for MotoGP.”
On behalf of the QMMF, Nasser bin Khalifa said: “This is obviously a major project for Qatar and we are proud to be able to say we will hold the first Grand Prix event under lights. Whilst this is great for the country’s image as a whole, it also means our track can be used in the hot summer months and we hope this opens up more opportunities for other motor sports events in the future.”
Experts in providing lighting services for racetracks and all kinds of sporting venues, Musco President Crookham described the complex system as: “The biggest lighting project in the world for any sporting event.” He added: “The system will incorporate over 3,700 separate light sources across every section of the circuit, which will eliminate shadowing on the track and in the run-off areas. The quality of the light is the same as any premium lighting system at any other major sporting venue. Based on our experience in other motor sports events, the riders will be able to see as well as during daytime and may even come to prefer it.”
FIM President Ippolito was proud to be able to announce the first night Grand Prix. “I would like to express my thanks to the QMMF and Dorna for the hard work which has seen this project move forward. Before it was just something to talk about, but now it is very real and it is great to see MotoGP changing for the better. It is positive news for motorcycling as a whole.” A night race at the Losail International Circuit was first investigated at last year’s Grand Prix, when MotoGP Safety Commission members Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi and Kenny Roberts Jr rode the track on street bikes.
Massilia September 22nd, 2007, 11:48 PM India to host Asian TT championship
Beijing, Sept 19: India won the right to host the 2009 Asian table tennis championship amid an angry walkout by rival Qatar from a meeting held today in Yangzhou, China.
New Delhi, which has not hosted a major international table tennis event for the past 15 years, will hold the 2009 Asian championships.
The Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) denied the only other bidder Doha, enraging Qatari representatives, who stormed out of the meeting, Xinhua news agency reported.
ATTU president Li Furong said most of the voters were in support of New Delhi, which hosted the Asian championships last time in 1992.
Li did not disclose the result of ballot, the report said.
"Qatar has held a lot of major sports events including the 2004 World Table Tennis championships and the 2006 Asian Games, while India has been away from major table tennis events for 15 years," Li added. (Agencies)

Massilia November 24th, 2007, 08:30 PM Qatar to host World Indoor Athletics Championship 2010
Monaco, November 25, 2007 –- Qatar won the honor of hosting world indoor athletics championship 2012 after the meeting of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) held in Monaco from November 22 to 24, 2007.
Turkey was the only rival of Qatar on hosting this international championship but IAAF elected Qatar host it.
The delegation of Qatar Association of Athletics Federation (QAAF) under the leadership of Mr. Dahlan Al Hamad, QAAF President and IAAF Vice president, left to Monaco to present Qatari Bid documents of host world international championship 2010.
On other hand, a committee from IAAF included Hanze George, President of European Association of Athletics Federations and Mr. Perwees, IAAF Secretary General, visited Doha on November 6, 2007 to view and examine the Qatari preparations to host the championship.

Massilia November 29th, 2007, 10:22 PM Qatar set to host million-dollar race
QATAR could soon be on the world map of horse racing as the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) is planning a million-dollar international race next season. Michael Fenton, an immediately recognisable figure in world racing and Qatar in particular — he worked here between 1999-2004 — has returned to the QREC following a short break.
http://www.gulf-times.com/mritems/images/2007/11/28/2_187238_1_248.jpg
FENTON...crucial role
Fenton, who is now the chief executive at QREC has the responsibility to make racing in Qatar truly world-class.
"The QREC has plans to host a Thoroughbred million-dollar international race, perhaps, during the Dubai World Cup, next season. The time would be ideal as we would be able to attract more international horses. The prize money would also be a sufficient incentive for big owners to participate. For an event of this magnitude, we need to start work at least a year in advance. We are certain that this will happen and Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh al-Thani and Sami Jassim al-Boenain are working to bring these plans to fruition," Fenton told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.
Fenton believes racing in the country has improved manifold since he was last here.
"I am very impressed with the development of the sport. There has been a huge improvement in the way the horses are looked after. The horses not only look better now, they also seem to be healthier.
"The locals are quickly learning the art of maintaining horses. In the past, the standard of veterinary treatment was low, but that too has changed now. Overall, racing has become far more organised and professional. That is quite pleasing. The most remarkable change, however, has been the increase in the number of Thoroughbreds," Fenton said.
Explaining the point, Fenton said: "The objective here is to improve the profile of racing in the country. The only way to do that is to increase Thoroughbred racing. Arab racing is limited and is not very high profile. But, it is a part of the culture in this part of the world, so it is not something that is going to disappear. However, if Qatar wants to be prominent on the international scene, the focus should be on Thoroughbreds.
"Dubai is a classic model. We could easily have international races here just as they have in Dubai. If the prize money is increased, it would entice owners to buy better horses from outside," Fenton explained. Another initiative taken this season has been to kindle the interest among Qataris to take up riding as a profession.
"The QREC have earmarked QR600,000 for a race only open to Qatari jockeys. Plans are also afoot to send six of them to Europe on a learn-train mission to improve riding skills. It is all aimed at having more local jockeys and to reduce the number of expatriate jockeys," he said.
QREC is headed in the right direction and it will not be long before Qatar becomes a regular stop on the international calendar.

QATAR will be bidding for the 2013 World Fencing Championship next year.
This was announced by Qatar Fencing Federation president Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani during a press briefing of the fifth Qatar Fencing Grand Prix, that gets underway at the Aspire today.
"Qatar is capable of hosting any event at this point of time as we have all the infrastructure in place. We want to use sports as a tool to promote Qatar globally as a tourist destination," said Sheikh Saoud.
The fifth edition of the Qatar Grand Prix will see world's 54 best players out of the top 60 vie for the top honours. An astonishing 163 fencers from 41 countries have already arrived for the event that will begin today and conclude on January 20.
"We have taken giant strides in the last five years and Qatar Grand Prix is now one of the best tournaments in the world. That doesn't mean that there is no room for improvement. We are going to keep improving and will make sure that this tournament will be one tournament that the fencers will look forward too in the coming years," asserted Sheikh Saoud.
Sheikh Saoud has meanwhile promised a raft of financial surprises on top of the already increased prize money for this year. The combined purse is worth over US$31,000. The Federation also has moved a step forward this year and have added an additional surprise gold sword award for the most deserving fencer.

Qatar Son 333 February 10th, 2008, 08:48 AM Asian Indoor Athletics in Doha
DOHA • It will be another first for Doha, the region’s sports hub. Next week, the Qatari capital will become the first city in the Middle East to stage the 3rd Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.
In December 2006, Doha became the first city in the gulf to stage the Asian Games, the second largest sports spectacle after the Olympics.
Iranian capital Tehran hosted the continent’s first Athletics Indoor Championships in 2004 whereas Thai coastal region of Pattaya staged the second edition in 2006.
More than 300 athletes are expected to participate in the Doha edition, which will be held from February 14 to 16.
This was disclosed by Dahlan Al Hamad, President of Qatar Amateur Athletics Federation (QAAF), at a press conference yesterday.
A total of 31 countries will be represented at the three-day meet to be held at the state-of-the-art Aspire Academy. Qatar will be represented by 16 male and four female athletes at the event.
According to the QAAF president, the Doha event will be the last serious outing for most of the Asian athletes aiming to strike it rich at the World Indoor Athletics Championships to be held in Valencia, Spain, next month.
“We are expecting the best in Asia to take part in our event. I cannot disclose the names (of the athletes) at this point of time as the list keeps changing,” Al Hamad said.
“From our point of view, this event is very important for us as Doha looks at some high profile athletics events in the future,” he said.
Doha will stage the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2010.
“This is our biggest athletics event after the Asian Games. It is a challenge for us. More than that, the event will help us in understanding how to stage indoor athletics events,” the QAAF boss added. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to stage what will be the largest indoor athletics championships in Asia. The past two editions hosted much lesser number of athletes and officials. This time, we are expecting the number of athletes and officials to be around 450,” Khalid Al Meer, Vice-President of QAAF, said.
Male athletes will compete in 11 events whereas female track and field specialists will be seen in in action in seven categories.
Al Hamad said QAAF has engaged a number of schools in Doha to help youngsters watch the action at Aspire Academy.
When asked about the likely tally of medals that could be won by the local athletes at the forthcoming event, Al Hamad said: “We are not looking at a great deal of medals. What we are looking at is how to improve on our past performance indoors.”
At the second edition held in Thailand two years ago, Qatar bagged four medals — three gold and one silver — to finish in fourth spot overall. Powerhouse China, Kazakhstan and Japan grabbed the first three places on the medals table in Pattaya.

Fossati: Qatar can do it!
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/06mB68p9QQ4CV/340x.jpg
Keen to prove themselves one of the footballing giants of Asia, despite being one of the smallest Gulf states in terms of both population and area, Qatar are hoping to finally make a serious impression on the football world at large by qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
The country has invested heavily in the "All-Star" Qatari league, making it one of the most desirable destinations for football stars at the twilight of their careers. But this is not enough for the Qataris, who dream of seeing their flag flying in South Africa two years from now at the sport's ultimate showpiece.
To this end, the Qataris have entrusted the national team reins to Uruguayan Jorge Fossati, who cemented his reputation in the rich Gulf state after a very successful stint with local club Al Sadd. Fossati led the club to an unprecedented domestic quadruple in his first season at the helm.
We have to collect all 12 points from our home matches, and then try to snatch the best results possible in the away games Qatar coach Jorge Fossati outlines his strategy for the final Asian qualifying group
Sure enough, Fossati was also able to turn around the fortunes of the national team, and led them to the final stage of qualifying despite their being underdogs in a tough third round group, which included new Asian giants Australia, reigning Asian champions Iraq, and China.
Qatar were not to be overawed in such exalted company, and their stunning Matchday 4 success away in China spread a breeze of confidence amongst the fans, who flocked to nearby Dubai to support the team in their last, decisive match against Iraq. The Qataris duly won to book their place in the final round.
"Our fans were spectacular...although we were playing in Dubai, it felt as if we were in Doha," a grateful Fossati said afterwards.
No fear
Their final group, which includes, Japan, Australia, Uzbekistan and Gulf rivals Bahrain, does not seem to worry the Uruguayan tactician. He thinks that his team has achieved a milestone by beating Iraq and China in the previous round, and that it can't possibly get any tougher.
"I am not concerned with my group," he said. "We should not fear any Asian team at this stage."
Fossati, who received the result of the final round draw in Montevideo while his daughter was giving birth, wasted no time after returning to Doha. He has planned a busy schedule for his boys, as they prepare for their first group match in September.
The team will fly to Spain for a training camp this week, and will play a warm-up game against Espanyol of Barcelona on 5 August, before they fly to Tehran to face Iran and Palestine in the West Asian championship. They will then return to Doha and host North Korea, followed by a final friendly against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh.
"It is crucial that we complete this preparation program before we host Uzbekistan and Bahrain in September," stressed Fossati, who knows that both games are must-wins. He explained that his strategy for the group depended on his players' ability to win all their four home games.
"Playing the first two games at home is a big advantage, and it will be a huge boost if we win both. But it can also turn into a disaster if we
drop any points from them."
"We have to collect all 12 points from our home matches, and then try to snatch the best results possible in the away games. This is my strategy, and this is how we could reach our goal."
He has made a huge list of demands, including a change of structure for the Qatari league, and forcing local clubs to compete in the domestic competition without their international players. Despite the requests not having been approved yet, Fossati has urged football authorities to accept his conditions.
"To reach our target, the clubs have to sacrifice, and everyone must work solely in favor of the national team. I see that as the only way for Qatar to stand any chance of reaching the World Cup finals."
nihad July 29th, 2008, 10:47 PM i hope we get thru.. qatar is in a tough group.. it will be hard..
Qatar Son 333 July 30th, 2008, 12:19 PM Insha'allah e get through :D cuz uzbakistan would be kind of easy (like china) and Bahrain probably like iraq.....
And about the iraq thing.... for some reason, we always won over Iraq... in the asian games and every match in a distance so far..... how did they won 2007 afc ? dont ask i am puzzled...
Ginger Brew August 3rd, 2008, 07:19 PM I'm a fan of hard-hitting volleyball action and I don't see a lot of game schedules on the Net. Or is it just because it's off-season right now? Can anyone post any info please? I hope to be part of a certain club (amateur one) as well. I'm dreaming of becoming a libero. :)
By the way, Doha Stadium is great! For 2 Riyals it's got a lot of juicy info. Well, save for few grammatical errors before (I saw a major editorial boo-boo back in December). Nevertheless it's still a great reliable source. :)

Ginger Brew August 4th, 2008, 07:13 PM what doha stadium ?
Or rather, Doha Stadium Plus.
Here's a link for more info: http://dohastadiumplus.com/
The paper is very nice to touch.
Massilia August 4th, 2008, 09:57 PM The good thing about that newspaper is that it caters to a generalist, english-speaking audience and it was really lacking apparently... It covers all sports in the country and thus gives a good overview on what's happening.
The bad part is, it's not insightful at all, more like a compilation of articles published here and there. So this is not comparable to a sports daily or weekly you would find in other countries. If you already follow sports, you will be able to point out things they have missed...lol. If you just wanna keep in touch with what's going on, it's still a good paper, especially at 2 riyals.
- There is a volleyball championship with an Emir Cup and everything, but during the summer, like in most sports leagues, there is a break before the various championships resume (most probably in september or october).
Ginger Brew August 5th, 2008, 03:51 PM ^ Yeah, you're right on the point that it lacks the insight that we normally expect from a sports mag. Not that it doesn't have any, but generally it's just a run down of stuff. Good thing that it's got a little of everything, so it's a handy review especially for busy people who don't have time to visit numerous sites on the web.
Personally, I find it useful and informative in a sense that I'm getting a better picture of Qatari sports. Getting to know the scene, so to speak.
Not that I'm complaining, but I find it weird that they post all [correct me if I'm wrong] their contents on the web. People might not buy the actual paper anymore and just rely on its Internet version.
- There is a volleyball championship with an Emir Cup and everything, but during the summer, like in most sports leagues, there is a break before the various championships resume (most probably in september or october).
Ah, yeah, right. Thanks. I think I had read somewhere before that they skip summer because of the heat or something.
fairul September 30th, 2008, 07:46 PM The event will be on the 4th November - 9th November 2008 at Tennis Khalifa Stadium. The world's Top 8 players and Top 4 double teams in the world will compete in the ladies tennis most prestigious event in terms of prize money.
This year, Doha will stage the finale of the WTA tennis event. Currently the world top 5 players have qualified namely: Serena William, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva.
The IT girl of tennis, Maria Sharapova will miss this years event due to shoulder injury.
There wont be any free tickets for the event, according to the organiser. However, the ticket price starts from QR10 onwards and will increase as the tournament progress.
Tickets will be on sale starting 12th October at the Corniche post Office, City Center and Villagio.
So, tennis fans, don't miss this once in the lifetime ( for me it is! ) opportunity.
Will update here with more infos later!
