The only country in the world who can (apparently) afford this is the Netherlands. Other countries use it too, but only on minimal percentages of their network, or large sections of toll roads (like in France or Japan).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but U.S. doesn't even have this type of asphalt yet. I'm not a specialist by any means, but I don't think I've ever seen anything like this here (especially on Interstate network).

Nice ring road (!), but way to many billboards on the sides, they do not make their surroundings look good.

Nice video, free-flow traffic on Jižní spojka, that's just luck during workdays :)

Yep, the first time I drove Jižní spojka there was a huge traffic jam eastbound. I recorded it around 1900 - 1930 hrs.

Traffic flows quite nice on the western section of Jižní spojka, where there is a truck ban in place. The eastern section is loaded with trucks, the R1 extension is needed badly. After R1 is completed, they should completely overhaul Jižní spojka, because pavement is pretty deformed (you can see this in the video too). The right lane frequently has pretty bad track formation (I've seen this elsewhere in the region too).

By the way, why are there so many gas stations along Jižní spojka? It's like 3 or 4 per direction over less than 20 kilometers. I also noted a huge amount of gas stations on I/7 between Chomutov and the German border. It's also surprising how many service stations (manned) there are in the Czech Republic. If you're in Denmark, it's really searching for non-automated gas stations once you're off the motorway.

After 1989 people started to do bussines and the trend was to regulate it as little as possible. You can see that on D1 Praha - Brno as well, gas station almost every 10 kms. Since approx. 2000 more strict regulations occured, so you won't find gas stations on motorways and expressways so often and the new rest areas are completely state owned (excl. gas station buildings itself).

Another specific fact of Jižní spojka is that this road is owned by the city of Prague - a typical example of urban expressway where the execution of ownership and administrative decisions are made by the same institution - the magistrate. So these city-owned expressways are not as much regulated as the state ones. But I don't wanna start OT about our politicians again ;)

To reply to your last sentence, you can hardly find any automated gas station without service in the Czech Republic. I personally use one of them, but this is really exceptional.

reagrding gas stations on Jižní spojka - i think it is kinda normal ans usual for some vital city suburbian roads, especially those which are used to enter/exit the city. here in Zagreb at eastern entrance to the city on that city fast road there is something like cca 8 stations on 8 km. at some places they are one beside another. it's just that all the gas operators want to have their station at crucial places.

An comprehensive statistical and overview yearbook 2011 of Czech motorways and higways can be found on the page of RSD. It is available in pdf in czech, english and german mutation. Information spanning from traffic amounts, accident rates, maintanance costs to toll rate and construction financing are presented also with historica perspective. Basically all the facts you want to know about czech motorways, very nice publication indeed.

Some data that I find really interesting. The modal share trend of passanger transportation changed its direction over the last two years. Automobile share went from 72.99 % in 2008 to 72.56 % in 2009 and to 69.26 % in 2010. Whereas both bus, air and rail respective numbers went up in the last year.

jaar 2008 2009 2010
Rail % 6.86 6.53 7.18
Bus % 9.29 9.53 11.78
Air % 10.84 11.37 11.77
Individual automobile % 72.99 72.56 69.26

R1 Pražský okruh - Ring Prague

This is my first of many sets that document the Czech highways.

Great, you have to let me know next time you are going to the CZ, Zwolle is really not far away from Wolvega. Perhaps you wouldnt mind to get a company for the trip? ;):). But I guess it will not happen any time soon again :). Have a nice holliday on european roads anyway.

I'm already back in the Netherlands :)

By the way, I noticed those figures too. Is 11 % of the Czech passenger kilometers domestic air travel? Sounds like a whole lot for such a small country. Usually air travel is not taken into account when comparing modalities. The sudden jump in bus usage is also remarkable for 2010.

If you don't take air travel into account it'll be:

2009:
Car: 81,9%
Bus: 10,8%
Rail: 7,4%

2010:
Car: 78,5%
Bus: 13,4%
Rail: 8,1%

Car usage in the Czech Republic is below the EU average of 86%.

In the Netherlands, it's:

2007:
Car: 79,7%
Bus: 3,3%
Rail: 8,9%
Bicycle: 8,1%

Without bicycle (for comparison with CZ):

Car: 86,7%
Bus: 3,6%
Rail: 9,8%

D8 Petrovice - Řehlovice

This photo set documents the northern segment of D8, from the German border near Petrovice to the R63 near Řehlovice, bypassing the industrial city of Ústí nad Labem (known as Aussig in German, but this exonym seems to be rarely used outside Germany).

It could not be just domestic air travel. That would be just too much. I made an mind experiment and think the figures could be right for the total flown kms with destination or start point in CZ, in the Czech airspace but perhaps bit overstreched.

In the document they report 10.80 bln ppl km. The Ruzyne airport has yearly almost 12 mln passangers. Other airports could together make around 2 mln passangers. If the passangers on average fly around 400 km in czech airspace we get no higher than 6 bln ppl km.

R63 Řehlovice - Teplice

The R63 is a short spur off D8 that runs to the city of Teplice. It's older than D8, it opened to traffic in 1985. There is a sharp turn where D8 becomes R63. An interchange will be constructed here, however, no construction has commenced as of August 2011. Considering it takes 2.5 years to build something like this, the interchange will be there no sooner than late 2013 or early 2014.

Chris, can you pronounce "ř"? :D

I think it's similar to the Polish Rz, which in turn, is similar to "j" in French "journal".

Polish "Rz" is basically the same as Czech/Slovak/Croatian/Slovenian "Ž" or even "j" in French "journal" but I think you would find "Ř" just in Czech. It is impossible to pronouce if you are not Czech. :)

Widening of Jižní spojka near Hostivař was finally put into operation, improving the so called "tobogan" section with two narrow lanes and 60 km/h limit. Video:

Today opened 1,2 km long easbound section (new eastbound carriageway) on "Jizni Spojka", part of the southern part inner city ring. This section enlarges and adds hard shoulder to the current road and prepares for intersection with the eastern part of the inner city ring in the future. Further works on the westbound carriageway are expected.

I wonder, is it similar to hungarian "zs", if it is near the french "j"?:)

Yeah I was doing a little over the limit. After reading the Dutch government got only 50 fines to be collected from offenses by Dutch drivers in foreign countries, most of them from Austria, I don't worry too much :) The 50 km/h section is absolutely ridiculous, it should've been 80 at least.

To all who wonder about the pronounciation of "ř".

wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%98

Pronounciation example. Word "Řeka" which means "River" in czech.

Cheaper than noise barriers.

D3 Tábor

Only a short section near Tábor is currently in operations as D3. The bypass of Tábor itself is not even of motorway classification, but it does have 2x2 lanes. The D3 is in good condition, except for the Tábor bypass, which has severe track formation.

D3 Tábor

Only a short section near Tábor is currently in operations as D3. The bypass of Tábor itself is not even of motorway classification, but it does have 2x2 lanes. The D3 is in good condition, except for the Tábor bypass, which has severe track formation.

The upgrade of Tábor bypass section to motorway standards is actually progressing. Only some last administrative procedures need to be done. It is coordinated with the new section south of Tábor. At the end of 2012 all sections on D3 will hopefully be in good shape ;)

As for further construction (Prague - Mezno and Veselí - Č.Budejovice - Austria) only god knows when those work will commence...

I got done once in Czech years ago, on the old road from Prague to Chemnitz. I was supposed to do 90, did about 140. Fine: 15 euros on the spot. I laughed all the way into Germany until I had to drive through that horrible shithole Chemnitz.

Great pictures Chris!

On Saturday we passed D2 and a part of D1 from Brno to Vyškov during the night, pity I couldn't take any photos. :(

R6 Cheb - Karlovy Vary

This set documents the R6 eastbound from the German border at Pomezí (near Cheb) to Karlovy Vary. Nearly the entire route is of expressway standard, though not all sections actually have this status. They are currently working on the final sections near Sokolov, it looked almost finished, just some bridge works and paving here and there.

Chris, has that route tolls, or is it free?
Also, can you please explain me the color code of Czech roads (green/blue/etc)?
Thanks, and sorry if it was already explained.

Nearly all R/D roads are toll roads, a vignette is required. A 10-day vignette costs € 10. Some short sections near cities are toll-free, which is indicated by this sign (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6210/6103290822_4e8b8927c0_b.jpg).

Green signs are for motorways and expressways. It's somewhat confusing because expressways have the exact same road number shields as national roads, they don't use a prefix in CZ.

R6 is free for cars (< 3,5 t) and tolled for trucks and buses (> 3,5 t).

Colour code:
Sign background: green on motorways and expressways, blue for others
Text background: green for Mway/Eway destinations, blue for non-M/E destinations, white for city districits and other local directions, brown for touristic ones.

IMO too much patching on our signs...

CZ expressways have really high standards. sirection signes are also one of the best in Europe imo there, but unfortunately, there is that mess with R numbers.

It is similar in Romania as I know, green motorway.
Only that we call our national roads with DNxxx, regional roads DJxxx, also more color coverage to distinguish them red-national/express, blue-regional, yellow-comunal,

So the best thing to do, when in CZ, buy vignette, whatever road you will choose? :)

Do you drive car under 3,5 t? If you know you will use motorway or expressway, buy a vignette. If you are sure that you will use only first class roads and sections of motorways or expressways that dont require vignette, dont buy it.

You can find motorway or expressway sections that dont require vignette (sticker) here:

It needs urgent repair. very bumpy, especially the right lane. The shoulder is outright unsafe to access, large holes. It reminded me of R7 which is also in poor condition.

D2 and D1 from Brno to Vyškov also are poor quality, it's very unpleasant to drive on those 'betonka' sections.

R6 Nové Strašecí - Praha

This is the eastern leg of the R6, one of the longest R-roads in the Czech Republic. It runs from the town of Nové Strašecí to the R1 near Praha (Prague) for about 35 kilometers. It opened in various phases, the first section opened already in 1985, the last (near Praha) not until 2008.

Hej Guys!

In 2005 was the last time I took the trip between Praha-Dresden. (Székesfehérvár(HU)-Rostock(D))The motorway was under constraction, you could see that further away from the "hills" near the german border. My question is! Can you take the motorway from Praha to Dresden without any interruption, or is it still under construction?

The final decission that European Commission will not pay out 11 Mld CZK (around 450 Mln Euro) on some Czech infastructure projects that were already started in past years (since 2007).

The system works normally like this. Finances are assigned, but project is financed from own sources, during the completition the funding comes from EU as well as screening.

However, in this case screening proved severe problems with tenders, either in the sence of formal problems in the projects, or in the sence of suspicion of their purpose, or possible unjustified enrichment during the projects when price had rissen without just reasoning and clear tendering.

The main bulk 8 Mld CZK was meant for D8 motorway. These fundings have to be now paid fully from national sources. Reasoning is that the national authorities did not considered a variant of this motorway section to the current project that goes through the protected nature area of České středohoří. I think that followers of Czech motorways know already how is this project delayed and what kind of problems it has due to the enviromental groups and juridical ingorance of czech authorities in this case.

One of the projects that also lost the funding from EU was project of railway bridge over Labe (Elbe) that could lift itself about two meters. It was around 800 Mln CZK (37 Mln EUR). The whole tender was made to suit only one contender. The bridge is finished, but even now it is not really clear if it will ever use its function.

Simply put, this decission means that in future years there will be 0,5 Bln Euro less money for future projects because the re funds of past spent money will not come. This is e.g. half the price for reconstruction of D1 from Prague to Brno, or some possible 20 km of motorways that will not be build.

When I read something like this then I am allways sorry that the EU could not also lock up these corrupt politicians and bureucrats, because they really dont care about this, since they are all long gone anyway.

R4 is extended into the city of Prague as the Strakonicá, also known as the Chuchelská Radiála, a 2x2 city boulevard without traffic lights. It ends at the MO. Some signs are really old.

The oldest part was built in 1963.

I would correct that, the first short stretch was opened in 1953. Probably the first dual carriage road almost completely grade separated in Czechoslovakia. It was the stretch from Smíchov to Malá Chuchle.
But the oldest signs would probably from 1985 or 1988, when Jižní spojka was opened.

Only local works regarding most damaged concrete plates :(
I'd say most plates are in terrible condition and I remember it not being so bad just a few years ago, so it's deteriorating. At this pace it'll be undrivable in a couple of years...

Last I checked start of construction of the missing section of D1 between Hulín and Lipník nad Bečvou was planned for next year. Is that still the plan, or was it delayed?

Is there any plans of recontruction of D1 Section Brno-Vyskov ? (194-230km). The conrete, especially on right lane is very worn out.
D1 between Praha and Brno is also in bad state:ohno:

Truck tolls in the Czech Republic were increased 20% this year. Any chance of this additional revenue means more renovations of the aforementioned road sections?

mapman:cz
October 8th, 2011, 12:34 PM
Though tariffs were increased, the total real income from tolls is not significantly higher, because of differencies in numbers of trucks among tariff groups.

But as written here before, the Praha - Brno stretch will be "modernised" in next years.

OT: There's not enough money for roads in 2012 and one of the backstage reasons is that the Ministry of Transport is lead by a small coalition party which is somehow new in politics and our financial minister doesn't want them to steal big amounts of money. And because of the lack of funds, there are not any new tenders, so it works ;) Eastern europe .... Shame we don't have any guarantee for public road financing in mid term ...

When will they fix D1 near Ostrava? There is a 1000-1500 m long section with 80 km/h limit and uneven surface.

Now it is not such a big problem, but with Polish section open in 2012 traffic will increase rapidly.

Say again? It's only some 5 - 6 years old with low traffic volumes. All these new motorways are great, but it appears some better quality control wouldn't hurt.

They wont fix it ever...

Now seriously. There was used wrong type of slag during the construction as the underlying layer (Slag was/is used in the region as construction material due to the proximity of the steel industry). This slag acts like a sponge and sucks water. In reaction the surface rises up creating wawes. Not bad for four years old motorway, right ;). I could not find any deadline for all repairs and I guess there is none. The current limitations should end on 21. 10. 2011.

It looks like this:

http://forum.ceskedalnice.cz/download/file.php?id=3049

These problems showed up right few months after opening. Indeed replacing the surface could have not possibly hepled. Now they have Eurovia to repair it, still in the guarantee. They want to add polystyren in the underlying layer to compensate. Let me laugh here. I would guess that the only help would be complete excavation and replacement. But yeah it will never happen. My guess, in time the problem will fizzle out.

BTW great photos of D1 border section!!! Cant wait for this section to open.

The same situation is with A2 Hemus motorway in Bulgaria. In the 80th when the first kilometers of that motorway were built, slag from the neighbouring
factory Kremitovtzi was usind for the underlying layers. The result can be still seen nowadays, 25-30 years later, at the first appr. 30 km of the A2 even, after rehabilitation of the asphalt contruction some years ago.

Yeah, R7 is pretty much substandard and won't fit to any motorway standards. The worst on this route is that it lacks proper accelaration and deccelaration lanes at junctions...

As for the Bohumín bypass, it really is is a huge relief for Bohumín town, because the current (since today former) route is not suitable for trucks at all.

No and No.

They opened in fact only bridge over the railway. The local setup next to the motorway is opened already some time. In use is following.

The EU commision brought up new proposal for the core axis in the TEN-T planning (TEN-T revision). See http://ec.europa.eu/transport/infrastructure/connecting/revision-t_en.htm

As for CZ there are quite some changes. E.g. the D3 connecting CZ and Austria is not anymore marked in the core network but in the comprehensive only. On the other side the D11 heading to the north connecting CZ and PL is now in the core cathegory (I guess former priority axis).

Some local polititians from south CZ said that the EU commission doesnt alocate any money for the D3 sections in the 2014 framework. Above that, when I compared the commission maps from may 2010, the revision proposal, and the actuall state, there is mess in it. The dates when roads should be operational dont match, E.g. D8 is marked as completed already before 2008, D5 as being under construction in 2010 etc.

Who is responsible for this mess? Czech authorities? Commisison authorities? How is it possible that in ohter countries is it possible to plan construct and finance without such chaos?

D1 Praha - Brno

I've read they are going to start the full reconstruction of D1 between Praha and Brno in the next few years. I've also read they want to operate a 3-0 system (2+1 lanes on one carriageway) which will cause major disruption of traffic. They want to divide the work in 25 phases. The works will take a whole decade.

I wonder what the best approach for roadworks on such scale is. I'm not sure if they meant 25 sections or 25 phases. If it's the first, this means the average section is only about 7 kilometers long. If they double that to 15 kilometers, they can shave off much more time. I'm personally a fan of the quick-and-heavy approach, rather than the long-and-somewhat-less-heavy approach.

The main cause for traffic disruption will not be the single lane section, but rather the point where it narrows from 2 to 1 lane. I rather drive 5 years on 15 km one-lane sections than drive 10 years on 7 km one-lane sections.

I think it's technically doable to execute the works in 3 years (on and off sections) but it would be expensive and the traffic disruption would be extreme (delays of several hours over the entire Praha - Brno route)

Nothing is sure at this moment, they are still considering a 2+2 (4-0) variant during the works. This might be enabled by paving additonal 0,5 to 1 m along the carriegway, but there is not enough space on some section and they fear that it won't bear the load of trucks... We'll see in next months what will be chosen.

R6, úsek Nové Sedlo – Sokolov (7,5 km), 11/2011

Is there already an exact opening date known? In August works were pretty advanced, just 2 or 3 bridges they were working on.

Full profile opening is to be expected in April 2012.

Nah, traffic volumes drop below 40 000 after Mirošovice and only increase over 40 000 until you reach close to Brno.

I believe there are some plans to widen the D1 near Brno though.

in HR we had similar thing: A3 was reconstructed in lenght of 190 continuous kilometers. on 3/4 of that route both upper and lower layers were removed and made again, and on 1/4 only upper layer was changed. the principle was attacking the route on more places at once on lenghts up to 10 km. averagely traveling from Zagreb to east you had to pass 8-10 large construction sites. it lasted for cca 3 years (replacment of overpasses at exits not included, just as few bridges, which were reconstructed later).
personally i prefer that way instead of closing whole half at once.

The problem with D1 however, is that it carries twice as much traffic as Croatian A3, and probably also more truck traffic. A work zone is not the worst problem, the main cause of congestion will be due to the 3-0 work zone configuration.

In the Netherlands we have a wide shoulder so a 4-0 90 km/h (sometimes even 100 km/h) can be operated.

that's right. but those narrow 2+2 things (or 4-0)... khm, i doubt how would they work. you can have them in NL with really wide shoulders, but with usual shoulders 2,5 m wide it is useless.

Well Dutch motorways are very busy. 80 000 vehicles per day on 2x2 is very common. We can't afford to have capacity-reducing road works like 3-0 / 2-0 or 60 km/h 4-0 like in Germany.

mapman:cz
November 14th, 2011, 09:27 PM
Our new motorways are being built with 11,5 m wide paved carriageway to accomodate 4-0 setup, but D1 was built with 10,75 wide carriageways that do not fit for 4-0 setup. So we either need to survive the 3-0 setup unless at least one new wider carriageway is built, or we need to invest to additional paved strip etc. BTW today many news articles were published stating that the police refused to support the 3-0 setup and they demand 4-0.

Another issue that the foundation of the shoulders were not always built to handle long-term truck traffic (like months in a row). Sometimes they need to rebuild the shoulder first before a 4-0 system can be put into operation. I know this happened in Germany and some older motorways in the Netherlands (those pre-dating the mid 1960's).

i'm not sure, but i think i'ver seen something like that on A1 in Austria between Linz and Voralpenkreuz few years ago when it was under major reconstruction.

The police are demanding 4-0 in 10.75 metres? Yikes! With Jersey barriers like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jersey_barrier_2.png

... that leaves at most about 2.5 metres per lane. What would be a safe speed under such conditions? 80 km/h?

This is common for a 4-0 setup. Not only for renovation, but also for a road widening.

1. Phase I: widening / reinforcing outside shoulders.

2. Phase II: widening the inside shoulder. (phase I and II can be swapped)

3. Phase III: 4-0 setup, widening / rebuilding the other carriageway.

Definitely not. A truck alone is 2.55 m wide, and that is excluding mirrors. Additionally, you need a margin of error (sinus track of a vehicle).

It is possible to have a 2 m left lane and 3 m right lane, but experience shows that the left lane becomes underused and is prone to accidents and congestion.

I drove this setup on the A23 in Vienna earlier this year. Nearly everyone was scared to use the 2.0 metre left lane. I used it, but it demanded intense concentration. It was signed for 60 km/h.

Thanks for the schematic. It's easy to understand.

Yeah, those images show what most likely will be executed on D1 as well (hopefully!)

4-0 setup, that the police demand, is not possible on 10,75 m, they expect the shoulders to be widened, no matter if the inner or outer ones.

The RSD wants to issue complaint to Eurovia on the construction of the D1 in Ostrava. They have found inapropriate materials in the underlying layers, such as constructions waste, scrap and junk, even a tree log.

No wonder the motorway created bumps and wawes shortly after opening.

The RSD is rather strong in its statements and they demand full repair even if it means rebuilding the motorway. I am curious about how this will go on.

It should connect the Prague inner and outer ring in the future, at the moment it starts at R1 (Pražský okruh) x R10 interchange and ends at Kbelská (The continuation towards the city center to the future eastern part of the city inner ring is planned).

At the moment it should mainly serve North - East and perhaps North - South transit, together with Kbelska, being a substitude for the missing north east part of the Pražsky okruh (therefore the board with Pražsky okruh in the video). Also the Kbelska x Veselska x D8 interchange is being upgraded to free flowing, creating free flowing connection between D8 and R1 and R10 in the north of Prague. map (http://www.mapy.cz/s/2zVi)

Some photos I took of R7 between Praha and Slaný. This is expressway is in a rather poor condition. There is also a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights at the airport, I believe they are the only traffic lights between Praha and Chomutov (maybe even the German border).

There are chances that you would see the expressway maybe finished someday in the 20s. When you go to the RSD page planned construction (http://www.rsd.cz/Stavime-pro-vas/Stavby-planovane) there is an interactive map with the list of all planned constructions going on. The R6 seems rather prepared with most of the paperwork done. If you zoom the map, you can find flyers about the sections, with construction timing on the last page (I wouldnt depend on these numbers, but they are informative). The lack of funds will probably move this project into the future every year. If something we might see the bypasses being under construction around 2014.

BTW, similar map for the sites under construction undergoing construction (http://www.rsd.cz/Stavime-pro-vas/Stavby-ve-vystavbe)

Something else now. Just read this article about the risky roads in CZ. Couldn't resist to not post the map. More dark means deadlier.

http://i.idnes.cz/11/112/org/FDV3f3f20_rapjpg.JPG

The map represents roads of first class or higher and around 30 % of all accidents with serious consequences. The police noticed, that in around every third accident the bad state of the road or traffic signs play a role.

Did you have some "threathening" experiences?

Not that much. There was one instance where there was a tractor 20 km/h on a 2+1 road road which narrowed to one lane where a small truck almost crashed into (he avoided the tractor by driving through the berm, I was sure it was going to tip over, but it didn't).

They do drive faster outside urban areas in CZ than in the Netherlands, but in NL this is barely possible due to heavy traffic. 90 - 110 km/h on I-roads outside urban areas is not uncommon in CZ. And they pass somewhat dangerously close sometimes, but then again, passing is banned on nearly all two-lane roads in the Netherlands, so we're just not used to anything that's more dangerous than going 5 km/h over the limit :D

Because I drove more kms behind the wheel in NL then CZ I strugle with the same thing when back in CZ :). Also when I am a passanger then :D.

Chris, as I see, you traveled almost all bohemian D and R roads, therefore I'd like to ask one thing. Do you think, that czech R roads might be signed with "motorway" sign? If so, are there any exemptions that don't fit that (I'd stress out R7, R46, R63, R35 near Liberec)? We have some idea of "re-signing" being discussed over here that would help us to use a "motorroad" sign on regular grade-separated highways as in Germany or other EU countries, where the non-motorized traffic is not sutiable ...

From what I've seen, most expressways are designed with high standards. A lot of them even have the same speed limit as motorways. I don't think a normal citizen will see a lot of difference between an D- and R-road. For example, I think R1, R4, R6 and R10 can just as well be motorways. R7 could be too, if the pedestrian crossing is removed, that small section is modernized and the entire route repaved. The alignment of the road suits 130 km/h.

R35 I think, is unsuitable for motorway classification. It is curvy and has lot of sections with a speed limit of 90 or 110.

Shoulder width is important for roadworks, breakdowns and general safety, but I don't think a more narrow shoulder should make an R-road ineligible for motorway status. A lot of countries in Europe have motorways with narrow or no shoulders (Switzerland, Italy, Sweden and Norway come to mind).

Thanks for that, many people that matter now think this way too, so it's really possible to make this change real during the next year, hopefully.

^^I've been watching this thread for some time and was always trying to find some explanation why R-roads are marked as expressways, while they have (or almost have) motorway standards. It would be really great to re-sign them as motorways :)

And one question: why does R6 have green signage like motorways?

Expressways have green signage. The difference in signage is that motrways have the number in red field, whereas expresways in blue field.
In fact all roads "for motor vehicles" have green signange.

Roads for motor vehicles are singned at the start with this, the name expressway fits this cathegory:
http://www.dalnice.com/pojmy/zac_sil.gif

Motorways are narrower cathegory and are signed with this:

Aha, that was confusing me the whole time. So both motorways and expressways have green signage, but the difference is in the color of the number field. Much clearer now, thanks:cheers:
I was confused because I saw some pictures with blue signs, for example this one from Chris:

That road is not an expressway at that point (though it really should be, they should build a pedestrian bridge there).

So blue signs are for normal roads? Like yellow is used in some countries (HR, SLO...)

yep

Everything outside Motorway or Road for Motor Vehicles (expressway) cathegory is signed with blue boards.

The destinations are signed with appropriate cathegories. Therefore the green field inside, you can get to Chomutov, Kladno etc. via expressway if you go onward.

There are also white directional boards, for local destinations... :D

The problem of the stretch with the pedestrian crossing is that it's one of our ubiquitous "temporary" solutions. Routing should be changed along with the construction of northern part of Prague's motorway ring. Therefore much effort to fix the current state is not to be expected. Despite that the historical experience (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_occupation_of_Czechoslovakia) teaches us that temporary equals roughly to 23 years (deployment of troops was also described as temporary...).

Today opened 3,5 km long section (2x2) of the first class road I-37 from Pardubice towards the R35. This road is considered to be the first with 100 km/h speed limit in the firs class roads cathegory. For now the speed limit stays at 90 km/h.

Yes, 80 km/h.

Yes, 80 km/h.

That's illegal. It's a violation of Article 22 of European Regulation 562/2006. If you have a photo of the 80 km/h sign, you could email it to the European Commission and complain. The EU can force the member states to eliminate illegal reduced speed limits at internal Schengen border crossings. Feel free to pm me for details.

EU law (see above) requires that they be removed if they impede the safe flow of traffic at the prevailing speed.

Really?

I thought there was still a 70 km/h limit approaching Luxembourg from Belgium, and it's only a year or two since the 20 then 10 chicane was at last removed leaving Belgium near Tournai

It's not illegal, the stretch right at the former border crossing does not have proper setup to enable more than 80 km/h according to our laws. A complete removal of border crossing booths is due to begin next year, after that the speed can be raised to 130 km/h.

Yes, really. Member states have been slow in complying with the law. The EU Commission has, in at least one case that I'm aware of because I filed the formal complaint, been reminding the member states of their legal obligations.

It is illegal. Member states are obligated by international law to comply with their treaty obligations, which in this case includes complying with all valid EU law because the member states have conferred competency in these areas to the EU. Any member state violating European Regulation 562/2006 is violating the law and may be fined by the European Court of Justice.

If the EU Commission were to sue the Czech Republic over this illegal 80 km/h speed limit, the ECJ would certainly order the Czech Republic to comply with the law and, if the Czech Republic were to continue to violate Article 22, then the ECJ would impose of fine (Greece was fined 20,000 euro per day) until the Czech Republic comply.

The time to come into compliance was between the promulgation of European Regulation 562/2006 and the date the law went into effect. Member states that didn't remove the obstructions during that time are simply disrespectful of the law and disrespectful of the right of EU citizens to cross internal Schengen borders without hinderance.

Ok, you may have your own view of the term hinderance, on the other hand, there are no police checks nor artificial constructions, that tend to hinder those who want to cross the border. In fact, it would be illegal according to czech law to impose 130 km/h limit there, because the road there does not comply with motorway standards. As soon as the reconstruction works to the new 130 km/h standard is ready, the speed limit can be raised. There is no other way to make it legal nowadays ... You know very well that this 80 km/h limit is just nothing compared to those 20/30 km/h limits on many other western borders.

The aforementioned article 22 itself states:
Member States shall remove all obstacles to fluid traffic flow at road crossing-points at internal borders, in particular any speed limits not exclusively based on road-safety considerations.

The Czech Republic is obligated by the EU law I cited above to make that reconstruction. The Czech Republic is in violation of the law because they are years late in fulfilling their obligation to remove obstacles to fluid traffic flow. That reconstruction should (by EU law) have been completed years ago.

60km/h at Walserberg (Salzburg). In my opinion there's no safety reason for this, exactly like on the Passau-border.

There are lots of these all around the Schengen Zone and they're all illegal. The member states have been slow in complying with their legal obligations to remove these because the EU Commission haven't been putting much pressure on the member states to comply because few citizens have been complaining to the EU about this violation of their right to the free movement of persons. If a handful of people would take photos of these illegal speed limits at border crossings and complain to the Commission, the EU would come down harder on the member states and the free flow of traffic would come about a lot sooner.

mcarling, given that EU treaties prohibit the bailing out of member states, it's clear that EU law is more guidelines than hard and fast rules - even the law makers themselves are happy to break their own laws in the legislature.

Trying to bring about frivolous lawsuits to make it so that people's journeys are improved by 10 seconds seems very petty to me.

I have read somewhere on Polish forum that motorway D1 from Ostrava to the Polish border is going to be toll free (no need for vignette).
Is it true?
If yes that is an excellent news as I also read somewhere that Polish road authority is going to keep our A1 from the border to Gliwice toll free.

I was always hoping for such situation as it will help integration of our border regions. Especially Ostrava with Rybnik region. For example if I was occasionally driving to shop in Ostrava I wouldn't buy annual vignette. I would choose local roads or avoid such trips altogether. Free motorways will encourage trips like this.

I see a lot of similarities with French - Belgian border around Lille. There are no tolls on motorways there even if most of French motorways are tolled.

mapman:cz
November 29th, 2011, 07:40 AM
Yep, from 1st January 2012 a new decree of the Transport Ministry becomes effective regarding list of tolled section and the section Ostrava, Rudná - state border is not in the list, thus it's toll free. It is a decision based on mutual agreement between Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Environment, because Ostrava region suffers from excessive levels of harmful particles in the air, therefore as a compensation the two-year-toll-free-motorway-trial has been agreed. It may sound silly but it's true ...

Are there any recent developments regarding D8 Lovosice – Řehlovice?

They should be opening some 3 km perhaps already this week. But it is not so clear if they would. It is about section Lovosice - Bílinka. Map: http://www.mapy.cz/s/2HvI, which actually does solve only bypassing of some roundabouts and interchanges.

http://i.idnes.cz/11/121/sp5/OKS3fa5dc_www.JPG

The other development is that EU commision will not pay substantial amount (nothing) of the promised funds because of the not clear pricing, awarding of contract, processing etc.

Furthermore there are still building permissions pending to be given as well as the revoked area plan decision. This whole lays on the speed of czech bureaucrats and speed of czech courts decisions, where organisation Children of the Earth takes a part.

There were some roadworks around km 21 (notable improvement) and some microlayer repairs closer to Prague (on the picture, not that good). Rest of the "stairs" left untouched.

Maybe we can make an inventory of bad motorway sections in the Czech Republic.

From what I've driven;

D3: good quality, except Tabor bypass (track formation but not bumpy)
D5: good quality
D8: good quality
D11: good quality, except for the last 20 or so km to Praha
R1: good quality, some sections are noisy
R4: good quality
R6: good quality
R7: poor quality, bumpy
R10: good quality
R35: good quality

I've only driven D1 as far as I/3, but I've read most of the road to Brno is mediocre to poor quality. I've also read D1 around Vyskov is very poor quality.

I also drove the D1 from Vyškov to Brno about 18 months ago, on my way from Katowice to Bratislava. I don't remember anything bad about that section, perhaps, after the non-motorway experience from Stanowice to Ostrava, a bad motorway seemed wonderful.

D1 Brno - Vyškov is terrible quality 1+1 road (nicknamed the Stairway, or the Left lane). One cannot even think of using the right lane at all. I always drive like >180 since flying over the holes and "stairs" is the only way to survive. Definitely the worst stretch in CZ.

The scope of the aforementioned project contains only section between km 21 and 182 (Praha - Brno). Brno bypass is planned to be rebuilt as 3+3 in late 2010'/early 2020's. Brno - Vyškov section is subject to some local fixes only, no complex plan yet.

Isn't there a possibility to widen some sections to 3 lanes? They did this on A7 and A45 in Germany, where certain sections have 3 lanes.

mapman:cz
December 21st, 2011, 10:31 PM
There are already tens of kms where climbing lanes occur, those lanes will be kept. The main aim of this reconstruction is to widen the carriageway to 11,75/12 meters to allow 2+2 traffic on one carriageway during roadworks and this must all be done within the current land annexation so there is no need of land purchase or expropriation. Our law is a real pain in the ass or let's just say mess when it comes to planning and building new roads...

At first, projects made it possible to extend the carriageway to standard 3+3 layout but this possibility was left out in further stages.

There were several managers from RSD arrested today because of corruption and losss to the state organisation. One of them is former director of the RSD (higways and motorway directorate - in charge of the higways and motorways, investor, etc.).

The charges are based on the fact that instead of renting the rest areas (year 2006 around D1 and D5) directly to the final firms. Those were rented through middleman companies, with estimated loss to the state in 10nths million euro.

According to the daily press, police caught the middleman handing a kickback to one of the managers. The middleman also faces charges.

Good work!! Just hope we will see more of the police work in recent years, investigating past cases and that villains will get scared to behave in this way.

That 3.5 km long section of D8 at Lovosice - Bílinka althoug finished still not open due to the anti noise glass roof over a bridge at Vchinice which doesnt correspond with the project and needs supplementary building permit (video video link (http://video.idnes.cz/?idvideo=V111220_161131_tv-zpravy_sha)) . It could take another half year they say to issue it.

On the other side. Authorities finally issued new territory decision together with all building permits for the rest of the half built motorway section. Nice that they finally issed all the permits at the same time.

(the old ones were abolished due to the many courts with green organisation). Now there is 30 days deadline for appeals going.

I drove there this month, high traffic in a dark late afternoon, 2°C, rain mixed with snow... horrible experience. There were a couple of roadworks, but only on short scretches.

And btw, there are some 2+2 sections between Novy Jicin and Frydek Mystek without emergency lanes and median strip, are they going to rebuild them in future?

Regarding those 4-lane sections on I/48: R48 is very well prepared, many sections have building permits but it has no priority in the official road budget, so I think only some safety measures will be executed in following years...

Well when you construct the road over the border, you try to time it properly with the other side. It doesnt make sence to have it finished but heading into a field or something. And it so happened, that the czech part was not rushed into being completed because of that.

I suppose it would be possible to open the D1 to the border if Poland would open the first 2 kilometers of the A1 from the border to first exit (I don't know the name of the road) connecting Łaziska to Gorzyce. However, I don't think that would be very useful until the rest of the A1 opens to Świerklany. Painting the D1 months before it will open just means that it will need to be repainted that much sooner.

Hmmm ... Don't forget the future D11 won't be connected to the future S5 in Poland (section Hradec Kralové - Legnica) for a long time ... So I agree with you in one sense: it would be ideal to synchronize better works on both sides, but the case I just mentioned shows unfortunately it's not always possible ...

It could be a very, very long time. I guess the D11 will probably connect to the S3 before the S5. As far as I know, there are no plans to ever connect the D11 to the S5, though it's an easy mistake to make because the DK5 now runs from Bolków to the CZ border.

I hope you did not feel offended becasue that was not the intention. There is difference between last stretch of a higway leading nowhere just to the border, with no exits, and an entire route that can be used anyway, whether there route on the other side. Thats also the reason why D1 is serving Bohumin already few yers, but the border section will come to operation just next year.

From what I remember works on Czech side slowed down because of lack of funds and it was before problems with Polish section, and thus new opening schedule, appeared.

To be honest I don't even understand why I should feel offended  You wrote nothing wrong ! :) I was just skeptical about what you wrote, that's all :D

Anyway, I can't wait to try this first motorway connection between CZ and PL

Yes, you remember right. It came to them handy that there was delay on the Polish side and it came in handy on the polish side, that czechs had postponed it. I think it came into mutual happines of the authorities. But I guess, the funds would not be a problem if they did see that the polish part is becoming real very fast.

Ultimately, the best is to have it finished fast and at the same time on both sides.

December 26th, 2011, 08:47 PM
The Czech decision to slow down works on the border stretch to save some funds came indeed before the delay on the polish side was officially announced, but it was made with the looming problems on the polish section in mind. In other words the Czech motorway directorate knew it could not realistically expect the polish section would be complete on schedule, so they, imho reasonably, halted the works until Poles re-shedule their section and diverted money elsewhere in the mean time.

There is really no reason to worry about completion of the Czech part as there is very little remaining work left. The opening date still depends on the same thing as before: completion of that troubled bridge on the Polish section.

As for D11/S3 connection date, it's a bit premature to speculate on any delays on either side of the border, I'm afraid, given how (little) advanced the border sections planning process is in both countries.

NB: I strongly suggest to take the occassional alarmist "opening of section XY endangered by the lack of money" articles in Czech media with a grain of salt as these are too often part of the interministerial fight for state budget funds, especially fierce in the time of state budget preparation. In that time there are many of them; along with imminent threat of collapse of the health, educational, security etc. systems if the budget of the respective ministry is not increased as demanded or - god forbid - reduced.

Why won't the D1 take a more direct route between Němčice nad Hanou and Přerov?

mapman:cz
December 27th, 2011, 09:01 PM
That's a veeeeeeery loooong story ....

Actually, it has something to do with the evolution of D1 plan itself. First D1 was supposed to connect Prague - Brno - Trenčín - Žilina - Košice - UA, near Brno a D47 branch to Ostrava was supposed to start.
Then in 1990's plans changed, D1 was planned to go along Zlin and then to SK, D47 was again a branch to Ostrava. Short after that the Hulín - Lipník part was added to D1 plan. And in late 2000's the rest of D47 has been renamed to D1.

There are some other factors as well that favor this layout -the flood plains of Morava and Bečva rivers - R55+D1 concurrency - R49 branch etc...

The vignettes for vehicles under 3,5 tonn, using the highways or expressways, will be around 25 % more expensive in the next year.

Year vignette will cost 1500 CZK = 60 Euro
10 days vignette 310 CZK = 12,50 Euro
Month vignette 440 CZK = 18 Euro

This should bring additional 750 mil CZK into the budget (30 mil Euro).

Yes to the first question, only few kms. But I guess, it will be swallowed by the maintanance.

To the second question. I dont know how they came to this number. But I guess the demand for vignets is pretty price inelastic. I dont know however.

Mobility is less price elastic than is sometimes assumed. It's not a product where demand goes up and down according to price. Of course, there is some elasticitiy if you go into extremes, like paying € 0.50 per kilometer (managed toll lanes) or gasoline that costs € 0.03 per liter (Venezuela), but in normal circumstances, mobility is a fixed need, much like a house or education, and and it goes up and down according to spatial changes and socio-economic developments.

I read accounts here in Highways & Autobahns about people who drive on old 2x1 roads rather than new 2x2 roads because they aren't willing to pay for a vignette. I don't know how prevalent that is or to what extent it depends on the price of vignettes.

There is not much alternative on a longer routes to the motorway in CZ, on shorter routes, that could be a case. But I think that the vignettes could be of some sort jump elasticity nature and rather bounded to the transportation in general. E.g. that people would buy them even if there is significant increase in their prirce. However when there would be substantial drop in their living standards (e.g. income drop, or overall rapid increase in the living costs) people would stop to use a vehicle in general, thus stopping using the vignettes in the process. (in economic terms, bigger income then price effect)

The situation in Eurovia versus RSD, aka waves on D1 in Ostrava (3 years old motorway) is getting really funny.

Eurovia sets campaing against the RSD in the media, and threathening with court... I really dont know what do they want to come with.

The story is like this. Eurovia says, yes we have used wrong material (they already sued a subcontractor), but it is not our fault and we have no responsibility, because your officials surveiling the construction have signed this document (showing to the cameras), that everything had been done according to the project.

RSD: Yes our construction surveilence signed all your papers and everything you did was approved by them. However, the construction was not according to the project. You used different materials, and whether our officials did not see this or did not want to see this, is not of any importance. Yours was the responsibility to deliver according to the project, and you did not. (and thats proved, becasue different materials then the ones approved in the project were found in the underlying layers - used steel mill slag instead of the blast furnance slag)

Really interesting where this is going to...

What is really funny? The officials conducting the surveilence during the construction were not officials from RSD, they were subcontracted by RSD. And guess who paid them as well as surveilence on the site? Yes, Eurovia.

LOL

Give us the money, and dont ask us what we did. If you ask. You will pay our friends that work for us, and they will testify that everythings ok.

Yet, if this wouldnt be enough. Eurovia goes for another one. They say, that at the time, no one could forsee the behaviour of slag as construction material and that they have similar problems in Belgium and the Netherlands. What problems? Bribery?

R10 Praha - Turnov

A photolog of the R10 expressway, northeast from Praha to Turnov. It connects northern CZ with the capital. While traffic is not very heavy, it's not empty either. It's a good drive, pavement is generally good, some nice views of what appears like a Parisian tree-lined boulevard but is actually an expressway, and some mountains appear in the distance further north. The speed limit is a comfortable 130 km/h.

Germany built their part (178N) very nearly to the Polish border. Poland was working on their part a few years ago. At least toward Liberec, the Czech part seems to be under construction. I'm not aware of any work on a bridge over the river dividing Germany and Poland though.

Skanska is building bridge over Nysa Łużycka - to be completed by 2013-05

The plans were reduced to build only a single carriageway until the traffic load warrants a full frills expressway. In Czech republic some 8 km long new section of I35 is being built between the current end of the dual carriageway in Bílý Kostel and the already finished single carriageway next to the border in Hrádek nad Nisou. This section should open this june. Part of the construction site is already visible on this photomap (http://www.mapy.cz/#x=14.884893&y=50.844543&z=12&l=15). As I understand it the missing link is the border bridge between DE and PL here:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O4aKhmkmnqI/TyBz_ANvEgI/AAAAAAAAAV0/wZK7PHKul3k/s719/Untitled.png

There is a gallery from this summer available starting at the view from PL into the CZ, further pictures from the polish section, ending at the PL/DE border, here (http://jiri0123.rajce.idnes.cz/I-35_CR_-_PL_-_GER_9._7._2011/#DSCN4415.jpg)

Currently, the I/35 between Bílý Kostel (where I/13 (continuing the I/35 from LIberec) ends as 2x2) and Hrádek nad Nisou, is under construction 1x1 in a new route with reserve for 2x2.

Should be like that.

Below is excerpt from CZ-DE-PL agreement from 2004 on that subject:

CZ gave 2.5MEUR, DE 13MEUR for construction of road in Poland.

Indeed for Poland this road is not important at all. Even more - If I remember correctly, it was discussion some time ago in Poland about strategic importance of this road as competition to Polish S3. This was in the context of access from south of Europe to Baltic ports (Polish or German).
But now, I do not hear any public discussions on that subject, and I hope this road finally will be completed.

Just to add to the R10 description by ChrissZwolle. The traffic is low between Turnov and Mladá Boleslav. Between Mladá Boleslav and Praha, there is heavy traffic on Friday afternoon outward. And slow moving flow on Sundays during the winter season as weekend skiers are returning to the city. This weekend rush can be seen also on D1. Other highways leaving the city aren't that full on weekends.

The Czech Republic does not have money for all these projects, it is just a vision - a load of possible projects to pick up from :) But there might be some financial injection by EU - CEF, Cohesion funds etc. that might help to construct 1/3 of those project by 2025.

Well, that's what we get for unreasonably strict noise regulations - sometimes it's just impossible not to exceed the norms unless the road is fully covered.

ChrisZwolle
March 19th, 2012, 05:47 PM
I wonder what the noise limits are, because full road coverages in the Netherlands because of noise are never necessary, despite much higher traffic volumes. They do construct covers from time to time to reduce the "barriers" between two areas, but it's not necessary according to our laws. I thought these things were harmonized within the EU. I also noticed eastern European countries have much more excessive noise screens in relatively low populated areas.

outdoor noise day (6:00 to 10:00 p.m.) night (10:00 p.m. to 6:00)
other than the traffic...........50 db 40 db
for road transport................55 db 45 db
Noise from rail transport........55 db 50 db
for noise from major roads.....60 db 50 db
rail inside reserved zone........60 db 55 db
old noise pollution................70 db 60 db
old railway tracks.................70 db 65 db

By old we mean made before 2000.
There are some exceptions for airports, medical, construction etc.

Inside noise levels

internal noise day (6:00 to 10:00 p.m.) night (10:00 p.m. to 6:00)
fundamental limit.....................40 db 30 db
for road transport (Except for buildings completed after 1.6.2006,
them at a base level)................45 db 35 db
Noise from music,
singing and speech...................35 db 25 db

First. There are quite some strong interest groups that can take the noise limits as a hostage and block construction.

Second. There are substantial profits made on the anti noise instalation.

Thirt: The municipalities may play this card in order to show off on the local level politics and in order to develop certain areas.

and adding in general:
a) From no influence on the construction during the communism, the society moved to the point where everyone wants to have a say in everything.

b) The space is not so limited as e.g. in the NL and people are used to quiet neighbourhood, especially in smaller cities and villages, where traffic is low. The proximity of traffic noise changes the attractivness of the house rapidly. People are more picky about the place they will live in. People dont move often. Most people stay in one house for their whole life. Most people have strong relations to the place they have house in. This creates more pressure on the new construction.

Oh yeah, and I forgot the asphalt they used in NL reduces the sound quite well on its own.

The Netherlands has a "preferred value" of 48 dB for road and 55 dB for rail, but exemptions are easily possible up to over 60 dB if mitigation is only possible at an unacceptable cost (there is a special calculation formula for this). The Netherlands uses the Lden value (weighed average of the day, evening and night period).

Unfortunately noise limits are always politically motivated and not based on objective measurements, I mean why is it acceptable that railways can produce higher noise levels expressed in an objective value? 7 dB difference is quite significant, because a 1.5 dB difference is already considered critical for taking measures (for example at a road widening project). And you won't believe the "outrage" by NIMBY's over the 130 km/h speed limit in the Netherlands (which would raise noise levels by 0.2 - 0.7 dB).

There is similar formulation in the Czech law about too high cost. But I am not sure if there is a formula specified for it. Thus that leaves lots of room for appealing, court decissions and in general delaying the construction and being pain in the ass.

Current end of D8, it becomes R63 there. There is supposed to be interchange D8xR63, D8 goes from left and will continue in the middle of the picture to the horizon to Prague. R63 goes to the right.

Thats also the reason why finishing D8 would take at least 2 years after the papers are again in order... because of that interchange.

Surel: Thanks for the "noise limits" summary.
I have to say, czech regulations are a bit outdated in this particular field. Fortunately, Ministry of Health is working on a new Noise Act, that is supposed to abolish measuring actual values before and after construction everywhere and using noise maps and zones instead. Let's just hope they'll prepare it fast and solid ...

Appeals happen everywhere, at virtually every project that affects people in some way. The key to success is not to hope nobody will appeal, but by solid decisions and lawmaking.

In the Netherlands such an appeal would be easy; someone appeals, judge points out the legal formula, appeal rejected, case closed. It's important such legal stuff is not open to interpretation and implemented the way it should, then you won't have to worry about NIMBY's appealing.

Delays caused by NIMBY's are the result of sloppy work by the authorities, not the existence and appeals of the NIMBY's.

Interesting evolvement in the case RSD versus Eurovia about the waves on D1 in Ostrava.

RSD came with a expert opinion they found in the files of another court proceedings of Eurovia. That opinion was made for eurovia in 2009 because Eurovia went to court with one of its suppliers. The expert opinion that Eurovia ordered stated that the material supplied to Eurovia doesnt comply with the project documentation and Eurovia demanded compensation from the supplier.

Funny. Eurovia denies, that the problems with the motorways are its responsibility to the RSD, and says that the material used was the correct and approved one. In the same time Eurovia suits one of its suppliers on the reasons that the supplied material was not correct and approved.

I wouldnt let Eurovia build any meter of a road in the CZ again.

It's not really about Eurovia, more of a "everyone vs GDDKiA" kind of fight :)
Surface cracks appeared on many motorways under construction, including A2 built by Eurovia. All companies involved claim, that the technology chosen by GDDKiA is at fault, which sort of makes sense, considering cracks appeared pretty much everywhere - on A1, A2, A4... Eurovia claimed that they informed GDDKiA last year that this problem could occur. GDDKiA claims the technology is not to blame (and looks like they have data to back this up, but I'm not an expert), instead they have proof that cracks are a result of errors made by the contractors. If this thing goes to court, it's gonna be an endless battle of expert witnesses.

As for situation on D1 - it's not really that big of a surprise, large companies always do everything in their power to hide stuff like that. It's kind of foolish though, that they went through with demanding compensation from the supplier. All of that shows, that the most important thing when building roads is having reliable and independent quality audits.
